D&AD Collaborative The D&AD Asos brief, was based around creating a mobile app for an age range or 2028 year olds who have a passion for fashion and technology. The aim for the breif was to re-design and create a concept that would enable it’s users to find the next thing bigger than street style. With this in mind, myself and my collaborative partner created an app with a multitude of features that speaks to this audience including, current trend pages for people to look at and follow, events and reccomended outfits, personal stylists and many more. Our app was called Asos Mode - the mode depicting fashion and a

way or manner in which something occurs or is experienced, expressed, or done. The apps concept was based around a personalised shopping experied tailored to the consumers needs, wants and individual style. The D&AD Asos brief has been a really fun and interesting brief. Over the course of working with my collaborative partner I have acquired new skills in how to use software and experimented with things I have not felt confident in before, which has helped me grow and develop as a designer. In doing this brief I think I took on a more art direction role with the organisation of the photo shoot, looks and cross course collaboration

which is something I am more confident in now than before. I think that in doing this I have gained a lot of new contacts that want to work again with me in future which is really beneficiaL In doing this brief it has sparked an even bigger interest for me to work in a art directive role in the future, and was the main reason I joint a graphic design course. Putting these roles into play has made me realise what I want to achieve in the future.

Noir clothing online fashion store

Noir clothing is an online fashion store that sells celebrity style clothing at affordable prices. The brand is elegant and sophisticated and aimed at women aged 18-28.

I also went above and beyond for what the client initially asked me to do by creating other branding items that they can work with for future development of the company.

for the brand. I would definitely like to continue working with businesses and helping them develop through their visual identity.

The Noir clothing brief has been a really enjoyable process, being able to see a design from some initial sketches that has transformed into a working identity for the client is something I am really happy and pleased with.

In doing this I have created a good relationship with client and will be working with them again for other projects and the development of the brand.

“This is amazing thank you so much! Design wise, this is perfect, simple and elegant just how I like it.

The process of creating the brand identity and other paraphernalia was something I found came quite naturally to me as a designer as branding and identity is something I really enjoy in graphic design. I was intially asked just to create a logo for the company, but

The designs were all made digitally which enabled me to carry on with other work and not worry about the production of such items. The brief was also based around fashion and as an individual I think I have a lot of knowledge of this subject and knew what would be appropriate

ycn oasis The YCN Oasis brief set the challenge to create a set of creative messages from a pre-dertmined list, the brief was very open in regards to how it was designed, however it was more focused on what the messages said and where they could be distributed in-store. The brief was quite a challenge in regards to finding a focused concept as it was very open. At points in the brief I felt I focused more on the crafting element rather than were it can be distributed which was a main point in the brief which I should have took a closer look at.

to be displayed instore from print, online and instalations in-store. I’m glad that I attempted to work out of the digital realm and took on a more hands on approach which challenged myself as a designer. I think I did make a few unrealistic time sheets and idea’s in regards to the brief, but I have learnt form this and will be sure to make more time for me to finish certain aspects of designs or choose specific ways to execute designs.

messages I created were fun, girly and spoke to the Oasis customer which the brief asked for. The challenge I had in the brief was evidently the printing processes and not only have I gained a new skill in beading but I have learnt about little things in order to make sure I don’t make the same mistakes again.

If I have learnt anything from this brief it was to think before you plan, and the reality of time scale with what else I have going on. But I am proud In regards to identifying of the work I have created the problem for the and feel confident and brief I think I did this knowledgable for when successfully, a strong skill I enter future competition However I felt I did of mine apart from design briefs. produced a wide scope is writing creatively so I felt of possible outcomes and this was the perfect brief ranges I could propose for me and I felt that the

The development of the magazine has been quite a long process due to changes in how my partner wanted the magazine to look and the cost to produce the magazine. I think collaborating with someone who doesn’t have knowledge in graphic design has been a good challenge, as I was able to help make concious decisions in the development of the magazine. Overall I am really pleased with the project so far on what we have created and proposed. I am also excited about having my designs stocked and sold in a store, and seeing people interact with my work.

acoustic avenue Unit One presents Acoustic Avenue, an acoustic night with a chilled atmosphere and live music. Acoustic Avenue is also a chairty event that is related to the Teenage Cancer Trust, rasing money and bringing awareness for those in need.

The colour choice of blue was to connote a chilled atmospher which was explained in the project background and the grey and white work together with the design and images.

The brief was a very quick brief with under a week to complete. The brief was to create Working again for events an A6 flyer design to and music is something I advertise and promote the am really interested in, in event, using the theme of my personal practice. an a acoustic style. 20

I also felt I challenged myself by doing an acoustic night / chairty event as I haven’t designed for anything like this before and was an good experinece. With the brief being so small I was able to balance the rest of my work whislt doing it and only had to make a few alterations for the client before the final design. _Client Feedback: “Thank you, this is something we wouldn’t have thought of doing and looks great”

Lorde

secret"7 lorde

Secret7” is an annual competition wereby an artist’s record sleeve cannot be named or made official. The competition is a great opportunity for your work to be exhibited and all the proceeds go to a good cause. What drawn me to the brief was the ability to be completley conceptual in how you could intepret the song and also to see how different people would intepret it.

I also really enjoyed the process of creating this vinyl cover due to liking the artist Lorde and her style. The song I had to interpret was her new single ‘Team”. I chose to focus of the theme of surrealism and fluidity which is heavily portrayed in Lorde’s music video and song.

The brief was very quick and gave me the opportunity to balance the rest of my workload which I think was a wise decision and the reason I chose it.

The sleeve was not selected for the exhibition. On reflection I could have made more developments and experiments, but I found my concept very quickly a decided to run I created my sleeve using with it due to the volume a hand made textures and of work I had going on at altering it in Photoshop the time. Overall I really to represent the fluidty. secret"7 black sabbath

After enjoying the brief with my first submission and with it’s quick turn around I decided to do another design for the competition. For my 2nd submission I thought I would step outside my comfort zone and challenge myself to pick an artist that I wouldn’t necessarily listen to ‘Black Sabbath’. In doing this I think I achieved the brief in reflecting the bands style but incorporating my own design taste into it. The brief took me a few hours to complete and although I could have done some more initial developments with the time given I had to produce the work in time for the deadline.

For this brief I wanted to create a vinyl cover based upon the world fallen apart and themes of darkness. I chose to go down this route due to the lyrics in the Black Sabbath songs that talk about the world falling apart and can’t be saved. From my research into the Hashima deserted islands I decided I could create some handmade textures to replicate the ruins of the island. I used black ink, acrylic paint, newspaper cuttings and bubble wrap to create a distressed feel. Again my design was not selected for the exhibition and I did feel slightly disheartened by this.

24

However on reflection I have learnt a lot about myself as a designer and that I could have pushed myself further in regards to concepts and further research into more artist’s and related material. Overall designing for Secret”7 is always an enjoyable task and I will look forward to developing my skills further when it comes to designing for music.

dialogue exhibiton yoke leeds

The brief was introduced by two third year graphic design students - Eve Warren and Nathan Bolton, who have curated their own exhibition based on dialogue and the representation of that through screen printed designs. The aim of the brief is to create a A3 design that represents dialogue / communication through vector , type or image based design in black and white.

have my work featured in an exhibition which would be a great opportunity, and in the presentation that Eve and Nathan did they also mention that people form Village books and other design related companies would be attending the exhibition which is also another beneficial thing for me to experience for future work.

The process of creating this poster was very quick, I think that by choosing this brief it created a small turn around which Since completing my is beneficial to my current design for print module it workload and was had sparked an interest suitable to what I like to do in my personal practice in my practice. The fact for me to do screen that the design was digital printing and other design and the guidelines of processes like this, so I keeping the design black was happy to be involved. and white was also helpful The benefits of this brief is in me making design the possible opportunity to decisions.

26

Overall seeing the third year students curating their own exhibition based on what they like in there personal practice and getting other creatives involved is very influential for future projects that I may have to do in my next year and will keep this in mind.

Typographic Poetry

27

typographic poetry The typographic poetry brief was created through Michelle Van de Blair who saw some of my work on my online portfolio and wanted me to create 4 typographic posters based on a poem that she had written called ‘Shelly’s Vision’. The poem is based around how society portrays beauty and the struggle for women to accept themselves.

The brief has been a new challenge for myself as I haven’t collaborated with anyone I haven’t met before. It was also quite refreshing that someone wanted to work with be based on what they have seen from my online portfolio.

with them digitally which has developed my skills within this. I would hope to continue to execute my digital skills and crafting skills even more throughout this module and will experiment with more ways in how I can do this.

The process of creating the posters was didn’t require a lot of development due to me always communicating I felt that this was project with client and making would be something sure what they needed interesting to take on before proceeding with because it’s something designing. This constant I haven’t really communication saved a experimented in and lot of time and I think we would be a new challenge both benefitted from this. for myself. The project would be a small turn I think from this brief and around as initially it was previous one’s I have got only digital posters that into hand crafting patterns were being created. and working

Editorial and layout is also an aspect of design that I feel confident within and was a good brief to challange myself on the content I had to reflect.

“"The respon has been a b experience fo only as a desig as an ind

nsive module big learning or myself not gner but also dividual."

Module Evaluation

The responsive module has been a new and challenging experience, as a designer I have been able to challenge myself by working in a multitude of graphic design areas that has helped me expand my skills and knowledge. Working with clients and keeping up with deadlines has been a challenging but successful process throughout the module and I felt that it has allowed me to grow as designer. Entering international competitions has been a really exciting prospect as this is something I have never done before and getting work out to people outside of university.

The responsive module has given me a glimpse into what life could possibly be like after graduation and also has built my awareness on the importance of reading briefs and meeting their requirements. Throughout the module I have identified my areas of strength which are based around branding and identity and editorial and layout. From the people I have worked with and my final design outcomes the majority of work I have done has been based within these fields of design. I also think I have developed my crafting skills in this module and found other strengths that I can capitalise on in the future such as packaging and promotion and digital design such as apps and blogs.

35

Module Evaluation

Something I have also realised during the course of this module is the selection of briefs I have chosen, which are down to what my personal interests are, who I am as a person and what inspires me. I have chosen a lot of music and fashion based briefs which are industries I would like to work in, in the future and hopefully work my way up to an art direction role. In this module I think I have really excelled in regards to collaborating with other creatives. I have worked with people on my course, in other courses, universities and other professional fields such as make up artists, business owners, poets, musicians, events management companies, models and videographers.

36

In doing this I think it has broadened my brief outcomes and has really benefited me as a designer in making future contacts to work with. I have also really enjoyed working with a multitude of different creatives because they have a different perspective on things compared to myself and have opened my eyes to new ways of design or have taught me some invaluable skills. In doing these briefs I have also been able to identify the areas I need to work on for improvement, some of the briefs I have done, I felt I could have done more in-depth research into more contemporary design and target audience information.

Module Evaluation

However the majority of work that I had received from clients, they had already proposed what they wanted specifically. I think by me not doing this some of my design work could have been pushed further. I also think another area of improvement for me is to make sure I am meeting the briefs requirements, in regards to the secret 7 briefs I felt that I definitely could have pushed my concepts further and made stronger designs for the exhibition, but with balancing all of my other work I found my concepts very quickly and ran with them. On the other hand with the Oasis brief I really pushed my concepts and wanted to create something that was quite challenging and different to what anyone else would think of creating.

I think in both of these briefs I have learnt not to over work myself but also not to under work myself, and this is something that I am learning as a designer and trying to find a good balance between the two. With these areas of improvement now brought to my attention I think this will definitely help me develop as a designer when it comes to concepts and time management and this will be an on-going investigation during my time on this course. Overall the responsive module has been a big learning experience for myself not only as a designer but also as an individual. I have learnt about the importance of being weary on who you work with because they can’t always be reliable.

37

Module Evaluation

I’ve learnt that you can’t always design things that you like and that there has to be a balance between yourself and your client. I have also learnt that you should only take on projects that you can handle and make sure you design them to the best of your ability, and most of all I have learnt that I need to be more positive about myself as a designer. I felt that I have achieved a lot of things and learnt a lot of lessons in these 9 briefs I have chosen and will continue to keep up my hard work.
