Road and Food Living to Ride... Riding to Eat

By Robin “Rockin Robin” Bartucci

Chao fellow riders and foodies, I can’t believe as I write my latest review that the summer is winding down...Guess it’s true when they say, the older you get, the faster the time goes. (Not that I’m admitting to getting older) When I mentioned to friends that my next quest would be to find the Best Fish Tacos outside of my kitchen, I discovered that you’re either a lover or a skeptic. So I dragged some of those skeptics along on my journey. My personal favorites are those with blackened tilapia or grouper, served on corn tortillas (traditional) with shredded cabbage, fresh Pico de gallo and a citrus or spicy mayo drizzle. I came to discover there’s a wide interpretation of fish tacos. I managed to squeeze in 8 spots from Wheaton, IL to Lauderdale Lakes, WI in my quest for the Best Fish Tacos is the NE IL, SE WI area…. knowing too, there were many more, just not enough time to get to them all. Thanks to all of you that sent me suggestions. Hands down, maybe not the best fish tacos, but definitely the best ride to find them was Lauderdale Landing in Lauderdale Lakes, WI. Rustic Road riding to the shores of Lauderdale Lake, they served up two varieties; Panko breaded Cod or Battered Shrimp on flour tortillas with Pico de gallo and spicy chipotle slaw. Very good, but my journey continued. Next up Bull Dogs Grill in Wauconda, IL, a retro style diner. Their version consisted of chili-lime marinated tilapia with sweet & sour cabbage and mango-papaya salsa, served with black beans and rice. Funny family diner atmosphere with great garlic Parmesan fries…..kickstands up, we ride on…. A co-worker recommended a visit to Arrachera Grill, hidden in a strip mall on Butterfield Rd. in Vernon Hills, IL. An authentic Mexican restaurant, that surprised me with the skill of presentation given to their dishes. Diners are welcomed with 3 different homemade salsas and warm tortilla chips. The fish tacos of seasoned tilapia topped with diced onion, tomato, cilantro and avocado were mouth watering. I felt close to finding the prize. Sazzy B in old town Kenosha was another pleasant surprise. Blackened tilapia with roasted red pepper, avocado and shredded red cabbage on a grilled flour tortilla,

served with the best side dish of any of my stops; an exotic grain mixture with fire roasted vegetable blend. They offer ½ price starters on Tuesdays and open mike night. Heading south, out of my hood, to Front Street Cantina in old town Wheaton, IL. Relaxing patio dining and the best appetizer, Ceviche Tostadas. Marinated Newfoundland Turbot with cilantro, onion and tomato…The Tacos on the Beach offered a choice of sautéed Turbot or shrimp with a tangy guacamole sauce or Corona Battered Cod with creamy chili sauce. I had one of each, of course in the name of research, and as much as I try to steer away from fried foods, I must admit the Corona battered Cod took top honors here. Motor Bar and Restaurant at the Harley Davidson Museum also serves up a mean Baja Fish Taco with cilantro-lime slaw and guacamole dressing. And of course, for any motorcycle enthusiast, you can’t beat the setting. The Horny Goat Brewing Co. on 1st Street in Milwaukee offers a unique variation. The crispy corn tortillas are filled with spicy grilled fish, roasted peppers and cilantro and are served with a cucumber salsa and tortilla chips that won rave reviews from my fellow diners. Drum roll please…who would have thought that my FAVORITE, hands down, fish tacos would be found at a BBQ joint. Yes, Main Street Smokehouse in Libertyville, IL has me drooling as I reminisce of my experience there. Just the way I dreamed I’d find them…. blackened tilapia with Mexican slaw, chipotle mayo, cilantro cream on corn tortillas and a bonus of sweet potato fries on the side. Their award winning smoked on premise meats and 5 homemade BBQ sauces are tempting as well. Next up: Breakfast spots, particularly those serving Biscuits and Gravy….send me your suggestions please, and a personal trainer so that I can continue on my eating journey. “It is good to have an end to journey towards; but it is the journey that matters in the end” - Rockin Robin

Pandemonium: I Hear You Knocking, but You Can’t Come In Hupy and Abraham, S.C.

By Tony “Pan” Sanfelipo Founder, ABATE of Wisconsin Sturgis Freedom Fighter Hall of Fame, 2002 After the attack on the World Trade Center in New York in 2001, the Department of Homeland Security has tightened rules and procedures regarding alien admission into our country. Actually, the State Department began expanding the scope of ineligibility of people attempting entry into the United States in 1965, when known membership in the Mafia was sufficient basis to declare a person ineligible to enter the U.S. In 1992, the ineligible list expanded to include members of the Triad. In the years to follow, organized crime groups operating in the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, Salvadoran street gangs including the MS13 and others were included on the ever expanding list. In 2011, by agreement with the Department of Homeland Security, the list grew again including members of the Yakuza, and the organized “biker gangs” Hells Angels, Outlaws, Bandidos, and Mongols. The basis for this determination was these groups operated as permanent organized criminal societies, and that a visit to the United States by a member could result in a violation of U.S. law. Therefore, it was reasoned further that blanket ineligibility would apply to every member applying for entry into our country. Fast forward to 2012: continued complaints by club members being denied entry into the United States has brought attention to the interpretation and enforcement practices under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). We’ve heard stories of bikers being denied visas and others who actually flew to this country, only to be turned around and sent back. We’ve also heard of one club member who attempted to vacation in Mexico but was arrested and sent back to Germany based on information Mexico received from our State Department. That person committed no crime and the reason for being cast out of Mexico was based solely on membership in one of the listed “biker gangs”.

Attorney Michael Hupy of Hupy and Abraham, S.C. had a conversation with a Homeland Security officer recently in which he indicated that people from all over the world would be visiting Milwaukee for Harley-Davidson’s 110th Anniversary in 2013. The security officer indicated that members of certain groups would not be allowed to enter the U.S. and would be turned around and sent back to their home country. From the conversation, it was apparent that the officer was not talking strictly about the 110th Anniversary but anytime a member of these groups attempted entry. In August, 2012, the Hells Angels filed a law suit in the United States District

Court for the District of Columbia. It names as defendants, Janet Napolitano, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Secretary of State and Alejandro Mayorkas, Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The suit alleges that designating their club as a known criminal organization is unwarranted; the INA interpretation of Congressional intent is flawed and not in accordance with law and denying visas based solely on membership in the club is a violation of the First and Fifth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Did Congress intend to allow a blanket denial of visa requests to all members of the Hells Angels? The U.S. Code and U.S. Department of State Foreign Affairs Manual (FAM) require that the Consular must know or suspect that an alien intends to engage solely, principally or incidentally in: 1.

acts relating to espionage or sabotage

2.

illegal export of goods, technology or sensitive information

3.

other unlawful activity

4.

activity to oppose, control or overthrow the U.S. Government

Points 1 through 3 hardly seem to fit the definition or character of members of a motorcycle club planning on attending a rally or similar event. Number 3 is the government “catch all” which presumes membership will naturally result in some unlawful activity. The language in the Foreign Affairs Manual is vague and overly broad according to the law suit. It remains to be seen if the Hells Angels are successful in this action but success would be a benefit to the other three clubs named in the INA ineligibility list. It’s important to note that motorcycle clubs and some rights organizations have voiced concerns over the assumption that all members of a club are guilty by association if some members have committed crimes. It denies members the right of association and free speech. Another disturbing claim is that certain clubs have been listed as “terrorist” organizations. There have been some discussions with members of congress by rights groups with regard to some of the anti-gang legislation being considered. Australia has some of the strictest regulations on club membership and association and we see some of those tactics appearing in the United States.

What Are You Doing About Your Stress?\ By Michelle Tate and Lisa Tomoleoni Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine,

www.aommchenry.com

Let’s face it, life today is stressful. Did you know that 80% of people in hospitals are there because their stress has manifested as a chronic health problem that now has to be treated more drastically? Your body’s stress mechanisms were designed to support you during stressful times, like in an emergency, but not during the constant stress to which we are often exposed. For most of us, stress manifests in physical conditions such as:

•Pain • Headaches • Hypertension • Insomnia • Anxiety • Addictions • Depression • Fatigue

When you “put up” with symptoms like irritability, insomnia, anxiety, depression, fatigue, headaches or tight neck & shoulders, the problem will only get worse. Even if the stressor is no longer present, the body continues to keep the stress response active which results in the depletion of our nervous system, lymphatic organs, kidneys & adrenal glands. Medical studies have shown that with increased & consistent stress our white blood cells (which defend our body against viruses) actually decrease. This decrease results in lower immune resistance, ultimately leading to physical disease & emotional instability.

What Can you do to Reduce your Stress? There are many things you can do to reduce stress. Here are some suggestions. • Acupuncture is a natural treatment for stress relief as it causes the body to relax and rebalance the body and mind. - Acupuncture can relieve feelings of anxiety and depression as well. - Acupuncture also encourages relaxation by loosening tight muscles. • Chinese herbal formulas can help support and rebalance the body, and help to relieve stress and anxiety without the unwanted side effects of western drugs • Daily exercise for at least 30 minutes a day such as walking, bike riding, or martial arts training can help relieve stress • Eating nutritious foods, such as fruits and veggies, reducing your intake of sugars, and fast foods can improve health • Spending time with family and close friends doing enjoyable activities can be very relaxing and rejuvenating

Is it Safe?

When performed by a properly trained and licensed practitioner, acupuncture is safe and effective, free from adverse or addictive side effects. Regular acupuncture treatments can help strengthen your body so you’re better able to deal with the day-to-day stresses of life and improve the body’s immunity to defend against potential illnesses.

How Does it Work?

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine have been shown to be one of the most effective ways to reduce the devastation of stress and activate the relaxation response. Acupuncture causes your body to release endorphins, chemicals responsible for relieving pain and distress. It also encourages improved circulation of blood which moves stress hormones and other waste products through and out of the body. As acupuncture relaxes the mind and body, the heart rate lowers, blood pressure decreases, and the muscles release their tension, all of which promote a calmer, healthier, and happier state of body and mind.

How Can We Help You?

At Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine we can make an immense difference in how you deal with stress, and relieve the symptoms associated with stress. One way that stress affects the body is by causing a depletion or blockage of “Qi”, which is the energy or the power that animates and supports the functions of the body. Through our acupuncture treatments and our herbal formulas, we can restore the Qi and thereby promote a return of health, vitality, and well-being. Many people, after just one session feel both relaxed and energized. We also use a variety of body work treatments, including Tui Na massage, cupping and moxibustion to help relax the body and mind, and restore harmony to your whole being.

ABATE of Illinois:

Kneez in the Breeze By Judy “Chooch” Kaenel

President DuKane Chapter A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois Inc.

I have a tattoo well actually 6 tattoos. Sweet Mother, I do! Since according to Leviticus, I could get smited, cursed or stoned to death for all kinds of infractions including this one, I am pretty brazen in my attitude towards an uncomfortable situation that could affect my well-being. On a side note, I prefer to be smited for this is a much cooler word than plain old stoned to death with pea rock. I stand by my tattoos. There I said it. I am neither ashamed nor am I worried that some people would think lower of me. Although, a really super duper scary threat made by someone unnamed, who is close to me in a “familial” way vowed to kick my butt if I got a tattoo – which by the way Brother Joey, (oops! Named Ya) concerned me for about 20 seconds, I see nothing wrong with getting a tattoo. But some of the more annoying perfect people “discriminate” against those of us that have tattoos. And discrimination is not just reserved for the tattoo world. It is oh so prevalent in the biker world as well. And it is not as blatant as refusing entry into an event or establishment for wearing your club’s colors, it is more insidious. Bikers discriminating against bikers. Hard to fathom, hard to understand but it happens day after day on social network sites, comments in newspapers and on and on. The most vitriolic spewing of hatred towards each other happened during the aftermath of Michigan repealing their Helmet Law. Post after post had helmet wearers calling non-helmet wearing bikers anything thing from stupid to road kill. Some of the posters echoed the moronic ramblings from Michael F. Dabbs, President of the Michigan Brain Injury Association who stated “Maybe we ought to save some of the costs when police or emergency responders go to the scene of a crash and the person is not wearing a helmet. Perhaps they ought to be left there like road kill.” Nice. It’s bad enough that non-riding, NHTSA loving twits mouth off and call us road kill but do bikers have to do it to each other? Knock it off! A.B.A.T.E. is about choice. We know every time we throw a leg over, we are taking our life into our hands; Our Choice, not NHTSA’s, not Dabbs-y Do Nut or any other Nanny Organization out there.

A.B.A.T.E. is NOT “against” helmet use. We are against government mandates telling us how or where to ride. There it is. The basics of our work with repealing helmet laws. We are not telling you to take your helmet off if you do not want to; we are just making it possible for you, the rider, to make the best choices for YOU. We are against lawmakers that have this desire to make everything safe and wrap us in cotton. Especially lawmakers or agencies that have never in their lives experienced what we do every day. I have a fight steaming and smoldering inside of me. Every time I read in the newspapers about another biker getting clocked by a cage, I see that these news agencies will NOT report that the biker was wearing a helmet and died but they so gleefully report when the dead were not wearing helmets. Those inconsistencies also stoke the fires of discriminating bikers who post “well if he was just wearing a helmet” As to assume the only reason our brother or sister died was because of not wearing one. Oh Please! Start researching, Car-Truck vs. Bike – Car-Truck wins. ALWAYS! And to assume that a lid would have saved all of them is terrible. Stop wagging your discriminating finger in the faces of the grieving families. So, when you read about another helmet law being repealed, have a moment to be thankful that this and other government mandates are being attacked and changed to preserve YOUR CHOICES! When you read about yet another biker down due to a stupid move on the part of the cage or his/her own fault; pray for their loved ones instead of demonizing the victim. Stop using the words “stupid, moron, organ donor, road kill” or any other nasty rhetoric you use against your brothers and sisters that do not see you eye to eye. Stop discriminating against your fellow biker. Comment instead that we need to get cages out there to see us; to avoid the accident instead of making a cleaner, nicer, tidier accident.

THIS IS MOTORCYCLING...

the 2012 AMA International Women in Motorcycling Conference

By Gina Woods President, Open Road Radio

The AMA International Women & Motorcycling Conference is the ultimate event for those women who love to ride, laugh, and network! This years’ event took place July 26-29 in Carson City, Nev., The conference combined speakers, seminars, demo rides from major manufacturers, product showcases, opportunities to meet new friends, reconnect with old ones and learn about various aspects of motorcycling as well as unlimited inspirational stories, some fabulous roads in the countryside, a motorcycle parade and a few good parties to attend! I was thrilled to have the opportunity to represent Dealernews. com at this year’s AMA International Women in Motorcycling Conference! Women rode in from all over The United States and Canada—some rode solo, some rode in groups, some rode with their male counterparts to a scenic Carson City in Nevada, close to beautiful Lake Tahoe with the Sierra Nevada Mountains as a breathtaking backdrop! International women riders were in attendance too, the FIM Commission for Women in Motorcycling was represented by riders from France, Poland & Switzerland. The AMA International Women & Motorcycling Conference included a long list of seminar topics designed to appeal to all types of women riders. Conference attendees were encouraged to sign up for the many offered seminars by key spokespersons and leading industry representatives that in many ways were the heart and soul of the event! Vicki SanFelipo and I taught the Accident Scene Management class over a two day period. The class was very popular with the AMA WIM participants and greatly appreciated! It is always great to hear people praise the skills we teach that builds a new confidence for them! The AMA WIM had a Virginia City Street

Celebration planned for us!! We experienced breathtaking scenery and giddy camaraderie in this old western style town! Saturday night attendees enjoyed a dinner celebration at the Pony Express Pavilion honoring many women in the Industry. A special guest of the conference Mary MaGee spoke to the crowd, this 75 year old racer - yep she still races (and wins) in vintage competition! Not only was her story phenomenal - how she had to pursue creative ways to get into “registration” at racetracks around the country - at a time when it was unheard of women on the track, but her talks of perseverance and passion were incredible! Thanks to all the gals on the Executive Council that put a lot of time into the planning of this event: Maggie McNally, Sarah Schilke, Liz Jansen and of course Tigra Tsujikawa - Great job ladies! And to ALL the people that helped and spoke and conducted seminars, classes, demos...so many were involved as well as all the gals (and some guys too! ) from around the country, including several other countries thanks to the ladies of Commission Femmes et Motocyclisme - FIM

12.4 percent.

The number of women riders in America is growing daily, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council. In 2003, an estimated 9.6 percent of the motorcycle owners in America were women. For 2008, that percentage was estimated at

There are more women in motorcycling than ever before. But every woman, from the very first who slid onto the seat of a motorcycle has made a contribution to the world of motorcycling. This is an event in which you make friends for life…

Riding in the “Ozarks”

Bill Gade www.tourontwo.com bill.gade@tourontwo.net

Reprinted from Article pubished on Allstate Rider News at www.allstateridernews.com

Everyone has heard of the area called “the Ozarks” but until you experience for yourself its rugged, natural beauty -- the stunning views of sparkling mountain rivers, clear-water lakes and mountainous roads that simply beg to be ridden -- you can’t understand why I say here is some of the best riding in the country. The Ozark Mountains commonly referred to as the “Ozarks”, cover nearly 47,000 square miles over Southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas. Consisting of 4 different geological regions, this is where you will find some of the best and most overlooked riding in the country. While I have ridden extensively throughout this area, most of my riding has been in the Arkansas part of the Ozarks. Probably the most famous (and yet hidden) road is Arkansas State Highway 7 -- also known as “Scenic 7” -- a 290-mile stretch that starts at Hot Springs near the Louisiana border and runs north to Harrison, close to Missouri. While there’s gorgeous scenery throughout the road, approximately 60 miles of the highway, passing by the Ozark and Ouachita National Forests have been designated as part of the National Forest Scenic Byways system. Like the “Tail of the Dragon,” Scenic Route 7 is one road you need to ride at least once. Personally, I prefer to ride Scenic 7 in the spring or fall, when the kids are in school, vacation traffic is reduced, and the weather is cooler. Since this is part of the national Forest Scenic Byway system, the road surface is usually well maintained BUT it is also well patrolled -- so a word to the wise: Watch your speed. In addition to the spectacular natural beauty, an integral part of the Ozark riding experience includes discovering the small mountain towns and villages, where you will get a unique

look into history and, at the same time, enjoy the opportunity to experience the relaxed, rustic lifestyle of the friendly people who live there. And why shouldn’t they be friendly? I would be, too, if I lived in paradise! The Arkansas Tourism Board wisely recognizes the economic value of riders taking motorcycle vacations in their state. They have published a free riding guide that can be downloaded here. You can also pick up one of the riding guides from one of their many tourism centers located around the state. This riding guide has 9 different planned routes for riding the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas. I believe that you should spend at least a week of riding on great roads in the Ozark Mountains. The towns of Russellville, Harrison, Eureka Spring and Mountain View are very rider friendly and have their own rider guides for their regions. Contact their chambers of commerce for more information. I only scratched the surface on riding the Ozarks. There are so many riding opportunities in the Ozarks you need to plan a week to ride there. Have fun, and experience some great roads in a region that is perfect for motorcycle riding! Ride Safe. Bill Gade is co-owner and host at Tour on Two, specializing in weekend, 5-day, 8-day and “Ship, Fly and Ride” motorcycle tours around the country.

We are on the move... And nothing says how much fun we are having better, than this picture taken by our very own Ellen Lovell Rains, of Illinois riders Bub & Cindy Miller from DeKalb, IL. In addition to helping us connect with the wonderful advertisers that continue to make this guide possible, Ellie has hosted a Bub & Cindy Miller, DeKalb, IL group page on Facebook for Midwest Women Riders. It’s a great group of women riders in the community and we thought worthy of mentioning in addition to the clubs and organizations we have listed both here in the guide and online. Wether you ride solo, with a group or a club, the community is strong and we’re proud and happy to provide more information, resources and tools to our fellow riders, brothers and sisters. Keep riding, having fun and keep smiling. If you haven’t had a chance check out our new web site and blog at www.mc-rag.com and subscribe to the blog and membership for updated Road and FoodTM posts and you will also receive the monthly E-Newsletter from theroadhawgs.com with great product reviews and articles from the road. The Road and Food feature Living to Ride... Riding to Eat has been keeping us busy and putting on our winter weight (thank you leathers), but RockinRobin and Joe Stormin’ Norman have some great reviews for you and they will both be hitting the road soon so expect updated posts on the new site for the roads and food they will be reporting and blog-ing on. As we move we are Expanding! And there are some beautiful roads outside of Wisconsin and Illinois and this time of the year is the perfect time to find them, especially south! Your comments are always welcomed so please join us online and send us your Runs and Events, suggestions, and comments. And look forward to even more fun developments in the new year! Ride safe hard and smart, and never ride hungry! ... Irish and Stormin’
