the Fall and Winter Season Staff writer: Joe Stormin’ Norman There are times when we feel invincible when we are on our motorcycles, but nothing could be further from the truth, you know it and I know it. This is particularly true during the winter, when dangers increase exponentially. Icy roads and cold hands can slow your reaction time in hazardous situations, but there are some great, easy tips that you can use to keep safe and warm during the upcoming months. 1. Avoid riding over or stopping on painted areas, especially when it is raining. Painted areas become very slick when wet. Try not to ride too near the center lines of the road during rain or snow, as this area has the added danger of collecting dirt and fuel deposits from cars and trucks. This goes for man-hole covers, sewer drains, metal bridges and tar joints. 2. A puddle is not always just a puddle. While it might look like a just a shallow puddle, looks can be deceiving – until you ride over it and it turns out to be deeper than you thought. It’s a good idea to safely avoid riding over puddles altogether. Save your rims and your tail bone! 3. Roads collect fuel and oil deposits all summer long. When the season’s first rains fall, it makes for an extremely slippery surface that gives much less grip than a dry road does. Even if you’re familiar with a road, it could have a layer of oil that creates a dangerous slippery surface. Additioanlly be aware when passing car washes. The road conditions can be very slippery due to the soaps and conditioners that run off into the street (this tip applies all year round).

4. Oil isn’t the only thing that can cause a slippery film on the road. Trees produce more sap during the summer – overhanging trees will drop sap on the road and mixed with rain will create a slick surface. Also, watch out for areas that could have leaves on the ground in the fall (I’ve personally fallen victim to this road risk). 5. Rain is distracting, not only to pedestrians but to drivers of vehicles as well. Pedestrians try to run through the rain and across the road to keep from getting wet, hunching their shoulders and keep their heads down against the rain. Drivers are distracted by technology to begin with and the road conditions only up the ante on the chances that they won’t see you. This means that you’ll need to keep your head up and stay aware. 6. Watch your speed. This seems like an obvious one, but not everyone follows it. Don’t accelerate too quickly or brake too sharply. Watch your speed when heading into a bend; the centrifugal force paired with high speed could take you out before you realize what is happening. Also be sure not to down shift too quickly – combined with a wet road, this may cause your back tire to lock up. 7. Be sure to keep yourself warm. Cold hands and feet don’t react quickly enough to avoid dangerous situations. Staying alert is most important if your cold and uncomfortable you will be distracted and not focusing on your riding skills and the road. A good hand grip warmer kit can keep your hands warm or heated gear available for hands, feet and your core is a worthwhile investment that will keep you safe and comfortable. (A personal note my hand grip warmers keeps my circulation warm) 8. If you’re not going to store your bikes for the winter take good care of your bike. Road dirt and salt can cause oxidization and ultimately corrosion. Put a bit of Vaseline in places that should stay dry and wax the bike with a good, hard wax. Well, it’s that time of year again! Soon the snow will be falling and the motorcycles will be tucked away for the winter. And each spring our shops phone will ring off the wall with customers who did not store the ol’ bike properly and now wonder why it won’t run. Some preparation now will ensure that you are out riding in the spring instead of waiting in the shops lineup. 1. Location…Where are you going to put it? - One solution may be to ask your bike shop if he offers a storage program. This is ideal because he will often prep, store, and have the bike ready to ride when you are ready again. If you decide to store it yourself, you will need a place that is dry and out of harm’s way. When possible, choose a location away from windows. The sunlight can fade paint and plastic parts. Direct sunlight can raise the ambient temperature of the storage area which will promote condensation when the sun goes down, so cover plain glass with some sort of shade. Also, cover your bike with a specially designed bike cover not a sheet or a tarp. Why? Because a sheet absorbs moisture and hold it against metal surfaces and then rust forms. Also, damp fabric will breed mildew and this may attack the seat material. A tarp prevents moisture from getting in but it also prevents it from getting out. Moisture trapped will condense on the bike and then the rust monster is back! Motorcycle covers are made of a mildew resistant material. The material is slightly porous, so it can breathe. 2. Change The Oil - Even if the oil is not due for a change, by-products of combustion produce acids in the oil which will harm the inner metal surfaces. Warm the engine to its normal operating temperature, as warm oil drains much faster and more completely. While you are at it, why not change the filter too? Add fresh motorcycle grade oil. 3. Fuel Stabilizer - Fill the tank with fresh fuel, but do not overfill. The correct level is when the fuel just touches the bottom of the filler neck. This gives enough room for the fuel to expand without overflowing the tank when temperature rises. But remember to leave room for the fuel stabilizer. Add winterizing fuel conditioner to prevent the fuel from going stale, and help prevent moisture accumulation. Stale fuel occurs when aromatics (the lighter additives) evaporate leaving a thicker, sour smelling liquid. If left long enough, it will turn into a gum, plugging the jets and passages inside your carbs! 10

4. Battery Storage - The battery must be removed from the motorcycle when it is in storage. Motorcycles often have a small current drain even when the ignition is switched off (dark current), and a discharged battery will sulfate and no longer be able to sustain a charge. A conventional battery should be checked for electrolyte level. Add distilled water to any of the cells that are low and then charge the battery. Battery charging should be performed at least every two weeks, use a small trickle charger like 2amps anything higher charge will cause the battery to overheat. Charge the battery away from open flame or sparks as the gas given off a battery can be explosive. Elevate the battery and keep it from freezing. 5. Surface Preparation - Waxing and polishing the motorcycle might seem like a waste of time since you are putting it away and no one will see it. But applying wax is a very important part of storing a motorcycle. Wax will act as a barrier against rust and moisture. Don’t forget to spray any other metal surfaces (such as the frame or engine) will a very light spray of WD-40. This will keep these areas shiny and protect from corrosion as well. It’s no big deal when you take it out in the spring just wash it right off. You’ll be surprised how nice it works on black wrinkle finishes.

6. Exhaust and Mufflers - Exhausts/Mufflers are known to rust fast when they are not used. So making sure they are properly stored for the winter on your bike will save them from an early rusty death. Spray a light viscosity oil (such as WD40) into the muffler ends and drain holes. Lightly stick a plastic bag (shopping bag is fine) into the end of each muffler hole to keep moisture out as well as little critters like mice. 7. Tires - Check both front and rear tires with your air pressure gauge. Make sure each tire is properly inflated to the maximum recommend pressure. As it gets colder, air condenses in your tires, so it’s important to pump them up to keep your tires healthy. Rubber is a flexible material and does not like to freeze (it cracks when it freezes). Placing 1/4”-1/2” piece of cardboard or wood board under each tire will help keep the rubber raised up from a freezing floor. DO NOT use a tire dressing on tires (such as Armor-All or tire cleaning foam) as this will make the tires hard and slippery. 8. Service all fluids - If the brake or clutch fluids haven’t been changed in the last year or 10,000 miles), do it now. The fluids used in these systems are “hygroscopic” which means that they absorb moisture. The contaminated fluid will cause corrosion inside the systems which may give problems when the motorcycle is used next spring. Be sure to use the correct fluids and note the warnings and instructions in the service manual. If you don’t have the experience to service these systems, contact your local bike shop, they will be happy to assist you. If your motorcycle is liquid cooled, the coolant requires changing every two years or 15,000 miles. Make sure that the engine is cool enough to rest your hand on it before draining the system. Coolant/antifreeze is available from your dealer and has been developed to provide the correct protection for your motorcycle engine. Mixed 12

Cover it - Now you can cover the bike with the cycle cover and look forward to the first warm day of spring. Back On The Road - Before you head out onto the highway, there are a couple of things to do. First, remove the cover and put it where you can find it again. Talking of finding things, locate the (charged) battery and reinstall it connecting the positive (+) cable (red) before the (-) negative. Recheck all fluid levels and turn on the fuel. Check for anything wrong on the motorcycle (cracked tires, broken parts/plastic, leaking oil). Set the tire pressures back to riding specs and you are ready to fire up. As you don your riding gear, remember that you’re riding skills will be a little rusty and the road surfaces will have changed a bit since the last ride, so go carefully. Remember we’re in the great white north ,sand/salt that weren’t on the road in the fall are sure to be left over from the long cold winter especially at corners and curves and may be hazardous. If this all seems to be a big hassle and a drag then you should have someone do it for you, because it will save you money in the long run. And for all of you that don’t store your bike, RIGHT ON! , just ride safe and watch for the sand and black ice and I’ll be seeing you on the road. Winters here are too long not to ride, LMFAO!! See ya on the road!!

or spectator so-to speak. And this year I did a lot of events that I’ve never done before or have wanted to do but the timing never worked out right. That’s what happens when you have a job, so this year I got to do a lot of riding. Arizona Bike Week rocked! The Slimey Crud run was a blast with my sista Jennifer… a flippin windy cold day it was but what a blast it turned out to be! I got up to Harley-Davidson’s New Models unveiling at the Museum which was packed! So naturally I got to see and speak with a lot of peeps. The Iron Horse Hotel followed by running into many old friends and more talking late into the evening. The Knuckle Shuffle in Viola-sponsored by S&S brought in bikes from all over the country and many that were mainly old vintage iron! Anyone who knows me knows I love the antiques most! Flatheads, Knuckleheads, Panheads, Shovels, Vincents, Indians…if it’s old – I’m down with it! Getting OFF HIATUS is what I’m talkin about! I’m blessed with being able to spread my enthusiasm, passion and the knowledge that I have of the motorcycle world, most of which I’ve learned over the years by hosting ORR. I enjoy riding in the fall because of the change in colors in scenery along with excellent weather and temperatures. I also enjoy looking at the different motorcycles out on the road and their different personalities – very much like the riders themselves. It is interesting to see how many individuals overdo their rides with accessories, paint and all sorts of things. It’s like, whoa Nelly ease up on the bling, way more than enough already. When is enough, enough? Nothing stirs my heart as when I see a bike that shows personality without being overdone. It has its own identity without any hint of being overdone. Even something as subtle as an exhaust system, it is amazing how many will purchase on name only. riding? Do you know precisely what type of riding you enjoy and do? And, most importantly how long you can ride before you need to stop and rest? Make it a point to know. I enjoy 7-10 day rides that run 3k to 4k in length. I absolutely enjoy these the most and consider them as a long trip. Next, the overnight 2-3 day rides. Then of course the all day ride. These are what I strive for and do. Nothing stirs my heart like a ride that I can drink in and ride through back roads out in the country and enjoy every facet of God’s creativity. I work diligently at not letting things get in the way of my rides that bring about tremendous joy and satisfaction. I have been able to cover a little over 64 thousand miles in 2.5 seasons including this year. I also know precisely what I like and don’t like in a ride when it comes to length, pace, comfort, safety, and overall enjoyment. And what is very important is to know when enough is enough and it is time to rest. It can be the difference of returning home or not. I had the opportunity this summer to do a long distance challenge ride that covered roughly 8k miles in 14 days - Key West Florida to Homer Alaska - the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge – all done on secondary roads. I went through some of the most beautiful scenery you could hope for. I did not make it to Homer, Alaska. I fell asleep while riding in Yukon, Canada and crashed just short of crossing into Alaska – roughly 6.2k miles into the run. You ask how could I possibly do this? Which brings me to the point, when is enough, enough? Fatigue and being tired are very deceiving and are two very key areas to be aware of when you are riding. Rest is a critical factor in riding safely. I had been riding day after day long hours and daylight lasts all the way to midnight in Canada. I had been riding for 9 hours straight with an average 45 degree temp and raining steady. After, drying out all the wet clothes, I ate a large cheeseburger and fries and then started up the ride again. The meal kicked in and I began to nod. I should have stopped and rested but kept going thinking that it would go away. I didn’t and I took a final deep nod and the rest is history. My riding season was cut short but I am very thankful to be here to write this article. No matter what type of riding you do – know when enough is enough. If you are feeling tired, fatigued then pull over, rest, take a nap. It will make a huge difference in your reaction time. An hour or two of rest can make a huge difference in your safety, comfort, and enjoyment of your ride. Never, ever take rest for granted. Again, know precisely when enough is enough. Feature: Living to Ride... Riding to Eat
By: Joe Stormin’ Norman Hello fellow carnivores! Hope everyone had a good summer… Barbeques and Fish Frys and every kind of food festival known to man we’ve experienced this summer. So now we’re preparing for the fall season and the holidays feasts, so before we worry about that. Let’s talk about some of the places we’ve experience while traveling around the Midwest. The first place is down town and since moving here from New York City I find myself drawn toward the city skyline, even though the rustic roads have such beautiful sites the cities have much to offer. So I left Lake County down 41 south to Lake Shore Drive on a beautiful sunny day and found myself downtown. And after cruising around town I found myself below a familiar site… a giant Weber Grill on the corner of State Street and Grand Ave. Let me start by saying “The food was off the charts!” Everything on the menu is cooked on a charcoal grill, even the desert! So I started with an appetizer, which I highly recommend, the meat starter sampler (which is also available in a fish option), it included rib fingers, beer can chicken tenders, teriyaki steak and barbeque shrimp. This place has tremendous salads. Then the main course I chose their Wisconsin Kettle Burger with apple wood smoked bacon, cedar cheese and here’s the kicker, a pretzel bun! For desert I had a lemon pound cake with fruit, nuts, carmel and ice-cream and yes it was prepared on the barbeque!!! It was amazing and I can’t wait to go back and try their breakfast menu… It looks “Mint”! The Weber Grill Restaurant is located at 539 North State Street, Chicago, IL. A little closer to home but notable and worth the ride from outside of Lake County is a New business diner called “Jerry’s Rock n’ Roll DriveIn”, it has a great burgers, chili fries and a gravy bread side order which is an Italian roll with crushed red pepper soaked in Italian beef juice and should be served in a bowl… we enjoyed the gravy bread so much we hardly had room for the ½ lb cheese burger called the “Big Baby” and chili fries… Additionally on the menu you will find, Italian 24

beef, hot dogs including my favorite the New York Sauerkraut Dog and “The Elvis Presley” which is, you guessed it, a peanut butter and banana grilled sandwich and being a huge Elvis fan I ordered one to go and it was good. You can order wings in orders of 6, 12, 18, 24 and a ½ pan. And for desert ice cream and funnel cakes. They don’t have a liquor license so coffee, hot chocolate and fountain sodas have free refills. Jerry is a great character who is very friendly and eager to meet his customers. During the warmer weather he hosts a classic car night on Thursday evenings and he is looking forward to having a bike night in 2012. If you find yourself up in Antioch, stop in at ‘Jerry’s Rock n’ Roll Dive-In” on the corner of Rte. 83 and Rte 173 on the south east corner. There is plenty of parking and it’s a nice meal at a great price. Being new to the area I was impressed with the New Glarus area, a beautiful ride through the countryside worked up our appetite and when we arrived in New Glarus we found ourselves at Tofflers Pub & Grill. They have a daily specials menu on the days they are open and on this particular Saturday I enjoyed the Jambalaya which was loaded with chicken and sausage and shrimp and served with hushpuppies. Others in our party enjoyed the Chicken Po’Boy, the New Glarus Brat (straight from a local meat market in New Glarus) and served with kraut. I’m looking forward to a fall ride to try their homemade soups and their chili which is available seasonally. They offer live music on Thursday nights and have a Chili Cook-off planned on their outdoor patio for October 9th to benefit an organization called Green Haven and will have the Packers Pre-Game on the outdoor projector screen (I’m a Jets fan so for me it’s about the food but hey the Packer’s wear green too so that’s cool… Go Green!) Tofflers Pub & Grill is at 200 5th Avenue (on the corner of 5th Ave and 2nd Street), New Glarus, WI. The atmosphere is always very laid back and friendly and it’s a great destination. Check out their Fish Fry with homemade lobster bisque or clam chowder.
