India looks at Southeast Asian markets to boost polished diamond shipments

A

s the Chinese economy slows down, India’s diamond exporters are looking at Southeast Asian markets such as Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand, where Covid-19 restrictions are being eased, to increase shipments of polished diamonds. Diamond exports bounced back to pre-Covid level in the rst six months of this nancial year and traders are expanding their presence in Southeast Asian nations to maintain the momentum. “The diamonds that are exported to China from India are further exported to other nations from the country,” Sabyasachi Ray, executive director, Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), told ET. “Nearly 60-70% of the diamonds imported by China are exported and the rest 30-40% are used for domestic consumption. The Chinese economy’s slowdown is going to impact the domestic consumption of diamonds by the Chinese.” China’s economic growth is losing steam under pressure from a construction slowdown and power shortages, prompting warnings about a possible shock to its trading partners and global nancial markets. Vipul Shah, Managing Director of diamond exporting rm Asian Star, said: “Now that the other Southeast Asian markets are opening up, we can now export to these countries. Moreover, there is a supply constraint of rough diamonds and the stock in the pipeline is very less. The demand for polished diamonds is very robust in the global markets.” Exporters said prices of rough diamonds have shot up 7-8% due to supply constraints but prices of polished diamonds, which are exported, have remained stable and not shown any upward trend. Gross exports of cut and polished diamonds grew 21,91% year-on-year in September to $1,907.3 million and 22,04% in rupee terms to Rs 14,028.04 crore. During April-September, cut and polished diamond exports grew 26.98%, as compared to April-September 2019, to Rs 91,489.2 crore. In dollar terms, the growth was 20.24% to $12.4 billion, according to the GJEPC data. In a survey by the National Diamond Council (NDC), diamond jewellery topped the list of most attractive luxury goods as consumers remain loyal to natural diamond jewellery. As per preliminary estimates by the NDC, global diamond jewellery sales could exceed $90 billion in 2021, representing a 23% year-on-year increase. In the two largest jewellery markets, the US (which accounts for 45% of global sales) and China (20% of global sales), demand for jewellery has risen 50% and 10% respectively, compared to the 2019 levels.

GJEPC announces the Theme for

Artisan Awards 2022:

The Collectors After a successful edition of the Artisans Awards 2021, GJEPC announces their next at the IGJS 2021 in Dubai

G

JEPC launched the theme of the 5th edition of Artisans Awards - “The Collectors” at a networking evening on 12th October on the side-lines of the International Gem & Jewellery Show (IGJS) 2021 in Dubai. The announcement was made in the presence of Dr. Aman Puri, Consul General, Consulate General of India; Dr. Motaz Al Shueibi, Managing Director, Salem Al Shueibi Jewellery; Mr. Colin Shah, Chairman, GJEPC; Mr. Dilip Shah, Convener, International Exhibitions, GJEPC; Mr. Milan Chokshi, Convener, PM&BD, GJEPC; and Mr. Sabyasachi Ray, Executive Director, GJEPC amongst others. GJEPC conceptualized The Artisan Awards in 2014 with the sole purpose of motivating designers and artisans who are the backbone of this industry. The Awards provides a platform to jewellery designers to push their creativity and design aesthetics to showcase world-class pieces. Over the years, the prestigious Artisan Awards has attracted entries not just from India, but all parts of the world – thus establishing its leadership position in the jewellery industry. This season The Artisan Awards theme “The Collectors’ focuses on three iconic women – Elizabeth Taylor, Barbara Hutton and Wallis Simpson – who had individual styles, a punch-you-in-the-face attitude, led tumultuous lives, and, most importantly, had an insatiable hunger for collecting signature jewels that dened and enhanced their persona.

24

The Collectors’ theme is further divided into 3 categories: Elizabeth Taylor, Barbara Hutton and Wallis Simpson Speaking on the occasion, GJEPC Chairman Colin Shah said, “The Artisan Awards is an endeavour to provide a platform for aspiring professionals to maximise their individualistic and creative ideas in jewellery designing. The thematic contest held annually has always witnessed exclusive, never-seenbefore, unique jewels that highlight the levels of innovation this industry is capable of. With entries coming in from across the world, this competition has proven time and again that it can be global in its outlook, welcoming in its inclusivity and authoritative in its ability to propel careers forward. The Artisan is on its journey to becoming a hallmark for ground-breaking vision in the gem and jewellery space.”

Milan Chokshi, Convener, Promotions & Marketing, GJEPC elaborated: “Jewellery is a form of self-expression and how one carries oneself. The three iconic women chosen as sub-themes were known for their distinctive style. The theme is challenging as the pieces have to be singular and the designer must envision and create a piece that will bet the icon of his/her choice.” The participants will need to create a piece of jewellery that would embody the air of the collector chosen. They need to visualise these women as they would have been in their prime – the way they dressed then, their personal style, the kind of jewellery they wore, the attitude they projected.

500 kg of temple gold melted so far, TN tells Madras HC

I

n the wake of a chorus against the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department’s action to melt temple gold into bars and deposit them in banks, the Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday told the Madras High Court that such a gold monetisation scheme has existed for about 44 years. Representing the State government, Advocate General R Shanmugasundaram submitted that certain persons were creating a furore over the gold monetisation scheme without realising it has existed since 1977. “About 500 kg of gold has been melted into bars so far, and deposited at banks. This has earned Rs 11 crore through interest,” the AG told a division bench comprising Justices R Mahadevan and Abdul Quddhose, when two petitions challenging the melting of gold came up for hearing.

Refuting charges of a lack of transparency in the gold melting process, the A-G pointed out that a G.O. was issued on September 9, constituting a committee of a retired Supreme Court judge and two retired High Court judges to monitor the entire process. The panel would begin by inspecting the inventory. The government had proposed to melt 2,137 kg of gold jewellery at the government mint in Mumbai into bars, which would then be deposited at nationalised banks. Earlier, appearing for one of the petitioners, advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, said the devotees had no clue on the jewellery of the temples as no

High gold prices take lustre off festival purchases

I

ncreased prices of gold took the sheen off sales in Gujarat on Dussehra, on Friday. Even though the consumer sentiment has remained upbeat, a surge in prices over the past fortnight kept purchases under check. Estimates of the India Bullion and Jewellers’ Association (IBJA) suggest that some 200kg of gold was retailed in Gujarat in a single day on Dussehra which is considered auspicious for buying the precious metal. Gold price stood at Rs 49,250 per 10 gram on Friday. “Gold price rose by Rs 1,850 over the past fortnight, increasing from Rs 47,400 per 10 gram on September 30 to Rs 49,250 per 10 gram on the Dussehra day,” said Haresh Acharya, director, IBJA. “Backed by a marginal increase in international gold prices, coupled with

JNI@Nov-Dec.’2021

the devaluation of the Indian rupee against the US dollar, the yellow metal price increased.” Muhurat purchases fuel jewellery sales in Gujarat year after year. Estimates of Ahmedabad-based jewellers suggest that purchases were largely spurred by wedding jewellery, delivery of which was taken on the Dussehra muhurat. “Besides wedding jewellery, people came in for fresh purchases as well. We saw good demand for lightweight jewellery which people use for daily wear,” said Jigar Soni, president, Jewellers’ Association of Ahmedabad (JAA). “Demand for coins and bars was equally good, not just from regular investors but also from the younger generation, which has begun saving, in this pandemic era.”

register was properly maintained by the department, though the court had issued an earlier order regarding the same. Rule 11 of Jewels Rules says, the trustee is the only person who can decide on repairing or altering of jewels, and Rule 13 provides powers to the trustee to

melt jewels, he said. How can the trustee know which jewels were required for temples and which ones were 10 years old when there is no proper register being maintained for over 60 years, he asked. Petitioners wanted G.O. on temple gold monetisation quashed HR&CE Minister P Sekar Babu has stated there are about 38,000 temples that have 2,000 kg of gold worth Rs 10,000 crore. “That is going to be melted by a so-called secular State. When these jewellery and ornaments belong to temples, the State has no authority… to touch it,” the counsel argued. The petitions, led by M Saravanan and Gopalakrishnan, had sought to quash the September 9 G.O., and a circular dated September 22, citing that deprivation of precious temple property is a violation of the constitutional right to property under Article 300-A of Constitution. The petitions were posted to October 21. The government’s move to melt temple gold donated in the last 10 years has stirred up a controversy with right-wing outts crying foul over the State’s intentions and its hold over the administration of temples.

The new initiative includes an e-commerce fulllment program and drop-ship service to consumers, as well as quality control for all new merchandise. Effective immediately, the esteemed laboratory becomes a one stop hub for online purchases for its partner retailers, being the last stop before the consumer receives the goods, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and a strict level of quality control. Through the end of the year, GSI plans to offer the service in the U.S., with plans to expand to international markets early next year. “At GSI, we are always looking for solutions to better serve our retail partners. We created the new ASSURANCE by GSI service to protect both our retail clients and their customers,” says Debbie Azar, President and Co-Founder of GSI.

“The pandemic boosted online sales overnight and presented retailers with new logistics challenges. Adapting our service offerings to now include a quality control and drop-ship service helps the retailers to protect their prestigious reputations. It also increases customer satisfaction with quicker, more efcient delivery, and it will ultimately enhance consumer condence because every order is fully screened for both quality and accuracy before being shipped.” This innovative new service is a logical extension of services already provided by GSI, such as diamond and gemstone jewelry screening and testing of nished jewelry, as well as quality assurance. The lockdown-inspired boost in jewelry e-commerce presented leading U.S. retailers with a growing dilemma – ensuring that correct orders and fully vetted goods were dropshipped to their customers in a

With the new ASSURANCE by GSI, goods are submitted directly from the jewelry manufacturer to the GSI laboratory where they are inspected to make sure they meet all quality control requirements and to make sure all diamond jewelry represented as natural does not contain any undisclosed laboratory grown diamonds before shipping directly to the consumer in the retailer’s preferred packaging. Additionally, Assurance by GSI also provides Quality Control solutions and services to retailers. As a result of the increase in jewelry sales and a shortage of labor, retailers are faced with bottlenecks in their Quality Control departments for new incoming merchandise from their suppliers. Assurance by GSI solves the problem by offering complete quality control for all jewelry items before they are shipped to retail distribution centers or to store locations. GSI already analyzes and tests millions of jewelry items for its retail customers each year, screening for undisclosed lab grown diamonds. Now adding the quality control service will allow goods to reach the jewelry stores much faster, especially during the busiest time of the year, the holiday selling season.

IIJS’2021 pandemic’s effects on the sector and the economy at large.

I

n more ways than one, the 37th edition of IIJS Premiere 2021, the agship trade show held in Bengaluru by the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), revived the moribund economy, not just that of the gems and jewellery sector, but all the peripheral sectors associated with the organising of the show, including transport, hotels, retail, and restaurants. Thanks to the IIJS mega expo, many hotels in Bengaluru reported 100% occupancy around the show dates.

While everyone loves a success story, pulling off a trade show of this magnitude – the biggest gem and jewellery trade event of 2021, according to GJEPC estimates – required intense deliberations and micromanaging, to ensure full compliance with safety norms. A major hurdle was the relocation of IIJS Premiere. The show had to move out of its permanent base for almost 30 years, the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Mumbai, as the state reserved it as a Covid centre until early 2022.

IIJS Premiere has generated an estimated USD 6.75 Billion-worth of business. We are already witnessing a surge in exports and are condent that the industry will achieve the export target of $43.75 billion this year and contribute more than 10% of Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s target of achieving $400 billion in total merchandise exports. “IIJS would not have been possible without the unstinted support of the Karnataka State Government to help us organise this show successfully. An event of this size and scale needed a great venue, and we are glad that the BIEC stepped up to help us organise it.”

Trends The rising price of gold pushed manufacturers to rethink their product lines by marrying economics and aesthetics. Minimising the weight of gold was a priority. At

IIJS was also the world’s rst largest physical-only show held since Covid began, with the participation of 1,300+ exhibitors and over 21,000 visitors, including more than 300 international buyers. Although a couple of big international shows were held prior to IIJS, they were essentially hybrid online-ofine formats. India’s largest and Asia’s third largest show overturned all the initial scepticism surrounding the pandemic. The ve-day show, has generated an estimated business worth USD 6.75 Billion! The success of IIJS Premiere 2021 is a clear indication that the gem and jewellery industry has shrugged off the

The Council with the help of the Karnataka Government ensured that the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) was a biobubble. It was mandatory for every person attending the show to get at least one dose of vaccination with a negative RT-PCR test done at least 48 hours prior to entry. The venue had a Covid Testing Centre along with an ambulance, quarantine room, and a doctor on call. Colin Shah, Chairman, GJEPC, said, ”We are delighted that

The embellishments were in the form of varied metal textures – high polish, satin, matte, brushed, grainy, embossed, and hammered nishes. Business boomed and the long spell of demand drought nally ended. It opened the oodgates, as IIJS exhibitors were busy booking orders on the very rst day itself. Of the 21,000 visitors, IIJS received more than 300 international buyers from countries such as Bangladesh, the UK, USA, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, UAE, and Nepal, who placed orders across all jewellery categories. Consumer demand has been picking up in the domestic market. With over 80 crore Indians vaccinated with one dose, life is already returning to normalcy. With more disposable income on hand, buyers are investing in classic jewellery pieces for their intrinsic value.

Show Highlights The ve-day show was attended by several dignitaries like Ms. Anupriya Patel, Hon’ble Minister of State for Commerce & Industry, Ministry of Commerce & Industry (through video conference), who hailed the industry for being the world leader in diamond cutting and manufacturing, and one of the largest exporters of gems and jewellery. Mr. Murugesh Nirani, Hon’ble Minister of Large and Medium Industries, Govt. of Karnataka; Mr. Ramana Reddy, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Commerce & Industries, Govt. of Karnataka; Mr. S. Suresh Kumar, Joint Secretary, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, were also a part of the opening ceremony on the rst day. Expressing delight about the show being hosted in Karnataka, Mr. Nirani, elaborated on the opportunities that the state could offer to the gem and jewellery industry. Mr. Goyal said, “It is a pleasure to be at IIJS Premiere 2021 that has shown all the hard work and dedication put forth by multiple

retailers, exhibitors of the gems and jewellery sector in India. The current Government policies have been formulated keeping in mind all the concerns and aspirations while encouraging them to venture past the government initiatives at present. The creation of a ‘Credit Guarantee Fund’ could help manufacturers overcome nancing issues and facilitate smoother trade.” More than 100 leading manufacturers, retailers, exporters, trade associations, international buyers participating at IIJS shared new advancements, initiatives, and other industry-related issues directly with Mr. Piyush Goyal. At the event,

the Minister unveiled the Cluster Mapping Report by The National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) and GJEPC, which has enabled the industry to identify clusters for gem and jewellery manufacturing to boost exports.
