“I am announcing today a special economic package with a new resolution. This economic package will serve as an important link in the ‘AtmaNirbhar Bharat Abhiyan” (Self-Reliant India Campaign). If added, comes to around Rs. 20 lakh crores. This package is about 10 percent of India’s GDP.” : Narendra Modi

Shifting paradigm to Village from Mega Cities!

R

ecently Narendra Modi, Prime Minister-India interacted with Bill Gates and suggested that the Gates Foundation could take the lead in analysing the necessary changes in lifestyles, economic organisation, social behaviour, modes of disseminating education and healthcare that would emerge in the post-Covid-19 world and the associated technological challenges that would need to be addressed. He said that India would be happy to contribute to such an analytical exercise based on its own experiences. This is to understand amid Covid-19 lockdown. What PM India is thinking for the post Covid-19 era? Where the direction and wind is blowing! De facto this is the critical time for every government and policymakers that to lead their nation in very precise manner. There is no room for policy mistake amid, lower charting trade & geopolitical tensions! I think direction India is very clear and precise, here I will focus on two, 1: Rajiv Mehta, Director-Dimexon Diamonds & 2: Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Minister of Finance. 1: Psycho-Cybernetics book of Dr. Maxwell Maltz was cited by Rajiv, “...it requires 21 days for an old mental image to dissolve and a new one to gel”. This could be once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, to dissolve all our old images and set up new ones! I mean, this is the time to reset India with a fresh-nfair! And in the row, I would refer the direction of Union Government India, a clarion call for or Self-Reliant India Movement. Here government is focussing on ve points, 1: Economy, 2: Infrastructure, 3: System, 4: Vibrant Demography and 5: Demand. This aim to promote a culture of entrepreneurship among India’s youth and inspire them to set-up their own enterprises and create employment opportunities for others! 2: Now a day, Nirmala Sitharaman is announcing huge big Economic Package of Rs20trillion! About 10% of GDP India, package is a clear and concise with the precision of direction that New India is raising in town & villages of India! This is the road to make every village Self-Reliant, every town a Self-Reliant with its’ own economic power & growth! One village one skill theory is opening though FM has cited one product one state so far! I think whole of the centralised economy India around the fewer cities is shifting and de centralising to nd every town & villages!

Bottom Line: We have learnt enough during the coronavirus lockdown through trade centric various Webinar & reading. It is true that, 1: sanitation and customer care with hygiene would be the important with the hygiene & sanitation of staff. 2: Adopt and stay abreast digitisation and 3: manage a wider supply line! Because, the impact of coronavirus is likely to lasts for ve years!

Uddhav Thackeray allows GJ export operations

M

aharashtra State Chief Minister Shri Uddhav Thackeray yesterday in his meeting with the cabinet ministers approved an important appeal made by the gems and jewellery exports fraternity to start operations in Mumbai. The State CM approved operations of designated gems and jewellery export units at Bharat Diamond Bourse and SEEPZ, which are India’s largest and world’s renowned jewellery export zones. The government however allowed the operations of these jewellery export units with only 10 percent of workforce for fulfilling of import and export obligations during the lockdown period. Also the State government have given instructions to arrange for safe and hygienic work environment for the workforce, including their safe travel to and fro from their house to their workshop’s or manufacturing units. This landmark decision by the government of Maharashtra has brought relief to thousands of diamond, gems and jewellery exporters in BDB and SEEPZ in Mumbai. This will be a significant move for the gems and jewellery export operations to commence in Mumbai as the city houses Bharat Diamond Bourse and SEEPZ, two of India’s largest jewellery export designated zones. Also, it is believed that Bharat Diamond Bourse have received export interest applications from the members worth $550Mn from 1673 consignment parcels and SEEPZ is expected to export $10Mn worth of diamond from 50 units. The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council of India (GJEPC), Chairman, Mr Pramod Agrawal, expressed gratitude towards the Chief Minister of Maharashtra and said, “GJEPC and the entire gems and jewellery export community in Mumbai and across the country, are extremely grateful for this to the 20-LEAD RESUMPTION

Landmark decisions for Export Trade breathe a sigh of relief

Permitted operations in Mumbai with 10 percent workforce during lockdown1 Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Uddhav Thackeray ji, for listening to our appeal and taking proactive step towards his pro-business continuity initiative for continuation of gems and jewellery exports from Mumbai. Due to COVID-19 lockdown, the industry was on a standstill for over 5-6 weeks and the export orders worth $1Bn are pending. This limited but extremely crucial operations permission will help us not only to clear the backlogs but will also prevent the business losing to neighbouring countries like China, Taiwan and Malaysia who are fully functional now. I also thank the Ministry of Commerce; The Ministry of Finance and Customs department for working relentlessly to gear-up G&J exports amidst COVID-19 lockdown.” Mr Colin Shah, Vice Chairman, GJEPC, said, “The CM of Maharashtra Uddhav ji understands the need of the hour and this initiative will bring cheer not just to the export houses, but also to the labours and craftsman who are the backbone of the industry. Priority

will be given to deliver pending export orders and this will bring liquidity to the overall ecosystem. “ Anoop Mehta, President Bharat Diamond Bourse said, “ This is a significant move for the diamond trade at BDB as the units can commence operations post almost 50 days of lockdown. I extend my sincere thanks to the Hon’ble CM of Maharashtra for considering our plea and allowing trade to commence at Bharat Diamond Bourse.” Mr Pramod Agrawal further added, “Will take this opportunity to thank Russell Bhai Mehta, Kirit Bhai Bhansali and the entire team of GJEPC who have worked towards a common goal of getting the business back on track and were constantly pursuing with the CM’s office and Govt of Maharashtra State to allow partial operations in the gems and jewellery export units in Mumbai. It is expected that the Indian gem and jewellery industry will be gaining back its momentum slowly by strictly adhering to the Covid-19 safety guidelines set up by government. JNI-MAY-JUNE’2020

On the other hand, Surat Diamond Bourse and Jaipur resumed work after a gap of almost 5-6 weeks. These centres are operational by adhering to the Covid-19 safety guidelines set up by Govt. India halts rough Diamond import for a month!

Halt from May 15, 2020: Recently diamond industry urged to all members to cease voluntarily import of Rough Diamonds for one month from May 15, 2020. In a jointly sign appeal to diamond fraternity India key signatories are Anoop Mehta, PresidentBharat Diamond Bourse, Pramod Kumar Agrawal, Chairman-GJEPC, Babubhai Kathiriya Chhodvdi, President-Surat Diamond Association, Mahendra V. Gandhi, President-The Mumbai Diamond Merchants Association and Vallabhbhai Patel, President-Surat Diamond Bourse. The join appeal said, as you are aware, the Covid-19 pandemic situation is having 28-LEAD RESUMPTION

an unprecedented impact on the global economy. Various countries across the world have declared lockdowns, and, by and large these countries have temporarily closed their economies. In order to ght this pandemic situation, India has initially declared a lockdown for 21 days, which has been extended for another 19 days. Various countries and different departments/ authorities of the Government of India have recognized and declared Covid-19 pandemic as a ‘Force Majeure’ event. With these lockdowns, and various administrative actions including travel bans, etc. imports and exports of various products have been tremendously impacted. The Covid-19 pandemic is also

having a huge impact on our industry, and, there has been a serious strain on the companies throughout the diamond value chain. In the process of monitoring the situation & on responding to the plea from the members the GJEPC, we had several meetings of the top member exporters and local members of Committee of Administration of the GJEPC to discuss the current market scenario and possible steps that can be taken by the Members in consequence of the unprecedented issues arising from the Covid-19 pandemic, for strengthening the diamond industry.

Review in June: Subsequently Vice Chairman and Convener (DPC) on behalf of GJEPC and BDB, SDB, SDA & MDMA have done consultation meetings with prominent members of trade in India and the world. Based on the opinion received from such consultation and the decision taken after that in the Diamond Panel Committee of GJEPC and the four diamond associations, GJEPC has written a note to the Hon’ble Commerce Minister, Commerce Secretary, Economic Advisor and other Government ofcials and apprised them of JNI-MAY-JUNE’2020

the precarious state of the Indian gems and Jewellery industry currently due to this

COVID 19 crisis which has called for urgent measures so that the industry may survive during this critical period. In order to protect the interest of the industry at large during this current crisis, the need for urgent measures to be taken was discussed in the meeting and it was suggested that the individual members may consider the option of curtailing their import of rough Diamonds from 15th May 2020 at least for the next 30 days. It was assessed that such import stoppage will help the industry face the challenge that has arisen out of turmoil in the global gems and jewellery market. On one hand this move will send a signal to the banking system that the diamond industry will not increase its indebtedness at the time when our downstream colleagues continue to meet consumer demand so that the bankers feel reassured & do not reduce the credit exposure to the industry. On the other hand this move will basically cause fewer roughs to enter the diamond pipeline and the producer companies will thus face lesser strain and indirectly share in the nancing burden and JNI-MAY-JUNE’2020

contribute to a faster restoration of normalcy in an otherwise healthy business. Based on these inputs and consideration , the Chairman of the Council, President of BDB, Chairman of SDB, Chairman of SDA and Chairman of MDMA urges its members as well as non-members to consider their commercial and contractual

position individually, and, consider ceasing their imports of rough diamonds voluntarily for a month of 1 month from May 15, 2020. It may be noted that this is merely a suggestion by GJEPC and the four prominent diamond trade bodies of India to their members and non-members in the industry, issued in the overall interest of the industry and the related stakeholders. The members and nonmembers may take their respective decisions independently and voluntarily.

WFDB launches YDs website!

T

he World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB) is excited to announce the launch of its Young Diamantaires (YDs) website www.ydts.org. The organization has worked for the past four years with young members of the diamond community all over the world to create a platform through which they can express their thoughts, opinions and views in a safe and constructive manner. The website itself was physically built by the members for the members. It is in its rst iteration and there are plans to expand its functionality. Rami Baron, Chairman of the Promotion Committee of the WFDB and founder of the Young Diamantaires describes the four pillars as the foundation from which the group will grow: 1. To provide a platform where discussion can take place which is relevant to our industry, respectful and without judgment of others. 2. To provide an ability to expand one’s networks, participate in events and share with like-minded people ways to improve each other’s businesses. 3. To cultivate leadership roles for the future of the WFDB and foster the opportunity for women to play an equally prominent role in our industry. 4. Become a focal point for sponsoring and contributing to those who are less fortunate, in ways which have a positive impact on their lives and that of our industry.

DPA directing small and Large business amid Covid-19 Recently Richa Singh, Managing Director-India, DPA replied our JNI questions by Nayan Jani, Editor amid Covid-19. She is focusing mitigating the disruption of Covid-19 & also directing small & large players of our Industry & Trade. Let’s move to Q & A: 1. What role has DPA performed during this pandemic Covid-19? In order to show our support to the trade community we have introduced campaigns in various markets worldwide. These initiatives will be focused on skill building, keeping the trade engaged and encouraging consumers to support local jewellers. Its goal is to minimise the damage and disruption caused by Covid-19 by directing small and large business owners to relevant resources, the focus being on elearning resources and tradespecic opportunities. This is the ideal time for our trade partners and their employees to invest in up skilling and we have our online training platforms to support this. 2. What is the lesson for diamond business from Covid-19? With the world juggling the current Covid pandemic, times are tough for the industry. It’s difcult at this time to have consumers thinking of jewellery. But as consumers stay in isolation, what we can do is remind them of better times to come. Our attempt is to stay relevant by creating content with the right mix of emotion and education. The digital medium is the most powerful tool we have at our disposal today. When people are stuck within the connes of their homes, they are turning more and more to technology to keep themselves abreast of the happenings around the world connect with their loved ones and keep their minds engaged. We are leveraging our social media platforms to keep alive the interest and desire for natural diamonds. 52- PRIME SUPPORT

3. being a marketing player, tell readers, How to re-start business post Covid-19? Our consumers are getting time to reconnect with their loved ones and appreciate nature like never before, and this will denitely create a greater respect for all things natural. And as consumers begin socializing and wanting to symbolise their affection for each other, we hope that they gravitate towards natural diamonds: 1: So the focus, as always, should be on consumers. We have to closely monitor how consumers make purchase decisions and what their new needs and wants are going to be. We predict that there will be a drastic shift going forward. Hence keeping a constant track of these trends is critical to increase demand in the sector. 2: Consumer behaviour is going to change and we need to adapt to it. We need to be open to adopting new ways of doing business and evolve to start using digital channels to connect with consumers. That is the only way we can stay relevant in this new world. 3: Upgrading our skill set is vital to the everchanging environment. We need to spend time reading up, increasing our knowledge base and investing in e-learning to keep up with the changing time. At present it is important that organizations take this time to invest in training and up skilling their employees. 4: Trade and business managers need to learn exibility and become innovative in order to match consumer expectations and we need to keep both our product and communication relevant in the current scenario. lobal gold demand held rm at 1,083.8t in Q1 2020, a rise of 1% on the same period last year, according to the World Gold Council’s latest Gold Demand Trends report. The global Covid-19 pandemic fuelled safe-haven investment demand for gold with gold-backed ETFs and it is attracting huge inows (+298t) to push global holdings in these products to a record high of 3,185t.

slower pace. Amid heightened volatility and uncertainty, global gold reserves grew by 145t in Q1. Russia announced it would suspend its long-term buying programme, signalling a slowdown in global net buying for Q2 and beyond. Total Q1 supply fell 4% as coronavirus lockdowns disrupted mine production and gold recycling.

Conversely, consumerfocused sectors of the market weakened sharply. Jewellery demand was hit hard by the effects of the outbreak and quarterly demand dropped 39% to a record low of 325.8t. Q1 inows into gold-backed ETFs saw a seven-fold year-on-year increase amid global uncertainty and nancial market volatility. Holdings of gold-backed ETFs reached a record high of 3,185t by the end of Q1. Sharp investment inows helped push the US dollar gold price to an eight-year high. Consequently, demand in value terms reached US$55bn – the highest since Q2 2013. The gold price reached a new record high in Indian rupees and Turkish lira, among others. The pandemic slashed jewellery demand as global governments imposed lockdown measures. Demand fell to previously unseen lows, led by a 65% decline in China – the largest jewellery consumer and the rst market to succumb to the outbreak. Operations were halted at many projects in an attempt to stem the spread of the virus and recycling ground to a near standstill towards the end of the quarter as consumers were conned to their homes. The modest strength in the rst quarter was due to investment demand, fuelled by huge inows into gold-backed ETFs.

In contrast, consumer-focused sectors of the market have suffered drastically. With governments across the world implementing lockdowns to stop the spread of the virus, jewellery demand has plummeted, led by a 65% decline in China. Gold demand will continue to feel the effects of COVID-19 for the rest of 2020. In particular, the divergence between investment in goldbacked ETFs and consumers via jewellery will likely continue until there is greater economic and market certainty.” The key ndings included in the Gold Demand Trends Q1 2020 report are as, 1: Overall demand grew in Q1 by 1% year-on-year to 1,083.8t, 2: Total investment demand increased by 80% year-onyear to 539.6t, 2: Total consumer demand decreased by 28% from 791t in Q1 2019 to 567.4t in Q1, 4: Global jewellery demand fell by 39% to a record low of 325.8t. 5: Central banks net buying fell by 8% year-on-year to 145t, 6: Bar demand weakened to 150.4t, a year-on-year decline of 19%. 7: Demand in the technology sector fell 8% to a new low of 73.4t & 8: Total supply dropped by 4% year-onyear. Gold demand India tumbles 36%! Q1 gold demand drops to 20% YoY!

W

orld Gold Council (WGC) released, India Demand Statistics for Q1 2020- for the period of January to March 2020. Highlight of the report says for Gold demand full year that, 1: Demand for gold in India for Q1 2020 was at 101.9 tonnes down by 36% as compared to overall Q1 demand for 2019 (159 tonnes). 2: India’s Q1 2020 gold demand value was Rs 37,580 crores, a drop of 20% in comparison with Q1 2019

Director, India, WGC said, “Indian gold demand in Q1, 2020 dropped 36% to 101.9 tonnes due to a combination of factors such as high and volatile prices, economic uncertainties and towards end of the quarter, severe logistical freeze following lockdown. Investment demand, though lower by 17% at 28.1 tonnes, was relatively better as sentiments towards equities turned negative and investors

(Rs 47,000 crores), 3: Total Jewellery demand in India for Q1 2020 was down by 41% at 73.9 tonnes as compared to Q1 2019 (125.4 tonnes). 3: The value of Jewellery demand was Rs 27,230 crores, a drop of 27% from Q1 2019 (Rs. 37,070 crore) 4: Total Investment demand for Q1 2020 was down by 17% at 28.1 tonnes in comparison with Q1 2019 (33.6 tonnes), In value terms, gold Investment demand was Rs. 10,350 crores, a rise of 4% from Q1 2019 (Rs. 9,940 crores) & 5: Total gold recycled in India in Q1 2020 was 18.5 tonnes, as compared to 16.1 tonnes in Q1 2019, a rise of 16% compared to Q1 2019. turned to gold’s liquidity and safe haven status. Wedding demand during the rst few weeks of the quarter did appear to bring in some seasonal cheer. However, later developments, more particularly since beginning of March, disrupted the market and consumer condence, resulting in a sharp drop in jewellery demand by 41% to 73.9 tonnes. Life-time high prices of gold expectedly increased recycling by 16%. Recycling and

collateralised loans against gold may be expected to grow exponentially in the next few quarters as the immediate economic impact of the lockdown becomes evident and hopefully, fundamental reforms follow, easing business sentiment. In that scenario, it is possible that gold becomes a tool for revival of many SME businesses and household fortunes. This perhaps presents an opportunity that could revive GMS (Gold Monetisation Scheme) in a consumer- friendly manner. Consumer sentiment could receive a boost with the arrival of a normal monsoon as predicted by IMD. Issues of integrity of gold and right price will receive greater consumer attention as gold prices test affordability. A digital transformation of the industry could be a positive outcome of the current crisis, as social distancing, contactless payments and other behavioural necessities challenge earlier forms of consumer engagement. We are unable to quantify the impact on full year demand as we do not have sight of several critical factors at play under current circumstances.”

Zambian emeralds as birthstone of May

meralds have been a beacon of hope across the world since time immemorial. coincidence that emeralds have always been associated with these calming and rejuvenating properties. Wearing an emerald connects us with the earth, reminding us that there is hope in the air.”

Emeralds from around the world have always had an opulent allure and an aura of healing about them. Twenty times rarer than colourless diamonds, they were rst discovered some 5,000 years ago. In that time, they have been credited with everything from curing snakebites to easing childbirth, divining truth and seeing the future. Emeralds are believed to symbolise hope, growth and fresh starts – particularly apt in the challenging days we currently face.

And after what has been a particularly challenging start to 2020, it is fair to assume that the green shoots of spring will be more welcome than ever this year, and so too the gemstones that so perfectly encapsulate the spirit of this season as thoughts turn to jewellery, and the increasing popularity of birthstone gifting (a top trend

Fittingly, emeralds are the birthstone for May, that freshest and most verdant of months, when thawed land springs into new life and buds with ower. Joanna Hardy, a ne jewellery specialist and author of the book Emerald, sums up the special connection between these precious green gems and this time of year: “Once again, our parklands, woodlands and gardens are bursting with renewed life; there is nothing quite like the haze of green as new leaves burst forth. with vivid colour saturation, the shade varying with the country of origin. East African emeralds are amongst the oldest of all, deriving their intense colour from a rare combination of minerals. The world’s leading supplier of responsibly sourced coloured gemstones, Gemelds has been mining emeralds at its Kagem mine in Zambia since acquiring the mine in 2008 in partnership with the Zambian government. Zambian emeralds are believed to be over 500 million years old and, due to their high iron content, more robust than others. They are known for their rich colour and are some of the largest and most exceptional emeralds found anywhere in the world. The ‘Lion Emerald’, discovered by Gemelds at Kagem in 2018, is, at 5,655 carats, one of very few exceptional gemstones to have merited its own name, displaying rare colour and clarity characteristics in addition to its signicant weight. When shopping for emeralds, Joanna Hardy suggests looking for, above all, transparency on origins and treatments; each emerald of note should come with a report from a recognised gemmological laboratory. You should also look for evenness of colour and good saturation; the cut matters too, and it is important to remember that natural inclusions are part of the gem’s DNA and should be welcomed: these are what makes each and every emerald unique. We Prefer Platinum Wedding Bands:

Tacori Y

ou have many choices to make when you’re selecting your engagement ring and wedding bands, and your decision about which metal to wear is one of the most important. At Tacori, we prefer platinum as our premium white metal and here are four reasons why, 1: It’s more pure at a .950 Platinum alloy. 2: Platinum is naturally hypoallergenic. 3: Platinum is a naturally white metal & 4: platinum retains its metal density across years of wear. If you scroll below, we’ve highlighted each of the four reasons we prefer platinum and some information to help you make your decision about your engagement ring and wedding band metal. And here’s a quick info graphic that helps illustrate why we think our engagement rings and wedding bands look better in platinum. Of course, if you’re choosing to celebrate in color with rose gold or yellow gold, there are pros and cons to every metal option, including personal preference and pricing. And no matter which metal you select, we know that you want to make an informed decision about the best metal for you. JNI-MAY-JUNE’2020

If you’re debating between white gold and Platinum, here a few of the reasons why Platinum is the premium choice for Tacori engagement rings and wedding bands. To start, Platinum’s naturally white color won’t fade or change color over time. This means, no maintenance is required to maintain a white hue over the lifetime of the ring.

After the white gold alloy is created, the initial white color of a white gold ring does often fade over time, and requires maintenance over the life of the ring to restore the white color to a showroom nish. This is different from a Platinum ring, which will not require maintenance to maintain its white hue.

Compared to a white gold ring, it’s important to note that gold itself is naturally occurring in

Additionally, the metal purity of Platinum is approximately 95% pure Platinum, compared to a white gold alloy, which is approximately 75% gold for an 18K gold alloy ring. This purity makes a Platinum ring not only more dense with this precious metal (as it’s 95% pure Platinum), but it is also naturally hypoallergenic and ideal for those with sensitive skin.

4 Reasons to prefer platinum wedding bands nature as a soft yellow metal. In order to change the color from yellow to create a white gold ring, the natural yellow gold must be mixed with other white metals – also known as an “alloy” – to lessen the yellow appearance and strengthen the gold into a formula that can be used for jewelry purposes.

This is different from white gold, which is known to contain other metals in its alloy which may trigger an allergic reaction. Additionally, this natural density and weight of Platinum – as Platinum is 25% heavier than gold – are characteristics that make it more durable than other jewelry metals. Platinum does not wear away and holds precious stones rmly and securely. In short, Platinum prongs are better protection for TRENDING JEWELLERY-73

Platinum is so pliable, that just one gram of the metal can be drawn to produce a ne wire over one mile (almost 2 km) long. Those were the years in which fashion was telling stories about the world and faraway places using fabric; why couldn’t jewelry do the same using gold? This was the challenge that Roberto Coin decided to accept. Since then, Roberto Coin can often be seen at the door of his atelier, just back from one of his trips, carrying sketches of the animals that inspired him the most: from familiar barnyard animals to exotic beasts. Each animal in the collection is considered a guardian of the earth, a tribute to the respect for nature to be celebrated both with beauty and with the responsible ethics that are reected in the choice of the precious stones and gold that make up every piece. The rest of Animalier’s history is made of painstaking anatomical research, of the skills of the

Over time, Animalier has followed the company’s evolution and after almost 30 years, this collection is still considered an open chapter in Roberto Coin’s creative universe, a chapter that becomes richer, year after year. The collection is populated by animals from the real world as well as by imaginary beings inspired by oriental legends or cartoons. ith Mother’s Day coming in just a few days, it is still not too late to get mom that unforgettable gift that will remain memorable and last forever!

Alexandra Mor said, we live in such vulnerable times, which certainly affect our usual plans to spend Mother’s Day close to our mother. While the best gift we can give her is our company, Covid-19 and social distancing will force us to be separate on this special day. So how can we show mom that we love and appreciate her without being able to be with her? We are excited to share with you our newly launched virtual experience that we hope will help provide you with all you need for your search of the perfect last minute Mother’s Day gift, or for any other special occasion now, and in the future. Designer said to explore the links below and choose between a gift certicate, or schedule a personal one on one schedule a virtual appointment with me, or simply click to choose from select pieces from our signature collections. With deepest appreciation to all the mothers around the world who are holding space for each of us while we’re paddling through this journey called life. 86-FESTIVE JEWELLERY
