Mumbai Seepz to be home to gems and jewellery industry’s common facilitation centre

Seepz to be home to gems’ common facilitation centre (CFC) in Seepz, MIDC, on the lines of such units in Bangkok and in Turkey where small and medium enterprises have access to resources, machinery and research.

The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) has set a target of pushing exports from SEZs from $7 billion to $15 billion in the next three years. In its first SEZ gem and jewellery conclave held on Tuesday, the industry said centres like the CFC would allow for sharing of technology, promote collaboration for cutting-edge research and would encourage hosting of seminars and training programmes, said Colin Shah, chairman, GJEPC.

Hailing the gem and jewellery industry as the champion sector, Shyam Jagannathan, zonal development commissioner, Seepz, Mumbai, said that the industry had the potential to reach $100 billion in next two years.

“The DESH Act, presently going through the consultation phases of the parliamentary committee, will be critical to the SEZ ecosystem. The Act will also address the issue of domestic tariff areas, ensure global competitiveness by reducing the cost inputs in terms of manufacturing, and leverage the ease of doing business in a closer conjunct with state government entities. This conclave is timely because the distilled inputs from this platform will surely ensure that it will be a game-changer for the industry,” Jagannathan said.

CPS Chauhan, joint development commissioner, Seepz, said it’s estimated that the Indian gem and jewellery segment’s untapped potential is $30 billion. He added that India needed to move up the value chain and concentrate on cutting and polishing high-value diamonds instead of just focusing on volumes.

Trends @ IIJS

Fancy-cut and fancy colour diamonds are the flavour of the season; illusion-setting diamonds that create the look of a solitaire are in vogue. Modular bridal chokers add more bang to the buck. Rose gold diamond jewellery is still popular.

Large bridal bibs and chokers in 22-karat gold with antique finish and yellow gold are in demand.

Layered bridal jewellery with long pendant necklaces paired with chokers are popular.

What Visitors Had To Say:

“IIJS gives a fantastic overview of the Indian jewellery market in its multitudes of facets and layers of techniques and materials used. We found lot of innovation in even the tiniest details such as stone settings. With everyone striving for differentiation and for fun approach, ceramic enamel seems to become a big hit.”

In pret gold, feather-light collections made either solely by hand or teamed with 3D and laser technology were top picks at the show.

Shapes that are more geometric and symmetrical in nature are catching up fast, thus lending a contemporary twist to collections.

In studded jewellery, emerald demand has skyrocketed, but other gemstones are not far behind. Corals, lapis lazuli, morganite, tanzanite, multi colour sapphires, opals are favoured, too. Custom cut gemstones are largely being used these days based on the design dictates.

“On behalf of Siroya Jewellers Dubai and all the attendees, I would like to congratulate the IIJS organising team at GJEPC for a putting up a very successful show . Exhibitors as well as visitors, I spoke to or visited were very happy with the business done. I do believe that this mammoth show must have taken a lot of planning and preparation and I am so happy that the team efforts resulted in a very vibrant and busy show. Looking forward to more rewarding business experiences and visiting India.”

“I have been attending IIJS since the early 80s when it was held at the World Trade Centre in Cuffe Parade. Over the years, I have seen IIJS transforming into a truly international show. This year was probably the biggest IIJS that I have seen and very honestly I was expecting some glitches. But to my pleasant surprise I found the arrangements to be exceptionally good. The coming into the show, the security check and the exit was seamless. The buggy arrangements for taking visitors to different halls made it so much convenient and faster. All in all, it was a nice and fruitful experience.

What the Exhibitors had to Say:

“We were pleased with the response at the show. Our handcrafted antique jewellery weighing between 50 gm and 100 gm has been the most soughtafter. The show has kept us busy all day long. For our clients from USA, Singapore, and Dubai, we specially make Kolkata jewellery.”

“IIJS is the place where we get to meet new buyers. It’s been an amazing show and we got clients from Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. We also got a fabulous response for our new collection Aamulyaa-The Priceless. Heavy bridal jewellery with focus on design is trending. We have smaller retailers looking for Temple jewellery between 10 gm and 15 gm, and others booking sets between 200 gm and 600 gm.”

“The show has been remarkable. We have seen a 50% rise in new buyers this time, who are booking heavy and light antique gold jewellery. Metal weight is not a consideration for our customers, from Dubai, USA, Maharashtra and Chennai.”

Rishabh Gandhi, Partner, Angel Jewels LLP

“We are very happy with the show and the consumer too is very happy with our new collections. This year we have witnessed never-seen-be fore walk-ins, this year we have seen most number of people at tending the show and making pur chases. The market sentiment is really good, trend in demand will continue in the next 4 to 5 months.

All wholesalers are here under one roof and that is convenient for our business. Similar booths and uni formity is a good idea as it is giv ing a very nice and rich feel to the show like international events.”

“From the very first day the walk-ins are good. The show has a lavish feel, the stall designs are giving an international look to the entire event. Uniformity is a welcome change that the industry needed. Customers walk slowly and don’t rush past the stalls like they used to do earlier. All products are examined with detail and newer customers are generated.

We have launched a watch collection with coloured stones at the IIJS. The IIJS consumer has evolved and they are not focused on prices any more. They want to have unique luxury items. For them we have designed and launched a luxu ry watch collection in the range of 1 to 1.5 lakhs. The response is unbelievable and most welcome.”

“This time we have also introduced diamond-centric lines highlighted with Australian opals and fine enamelling. Of course, our heavier sets in diamonds were in demand due to the upcoming festive and bridal seasons, but our lightweight diamond lines are rocking!”

“The show has been phenomenal for us. High quality buyers not only from pan India but overseas have met us. The best part this year is that from big chain stores to small independent stores everyone was there and looking for exclusive collections, which every manufacturer had showcased. In the past, visitors used to spend the first two days at the show in the Gold section, but this time since Day 1, we saw similar large crowds in the Diamond section too.”

“The response is very good and meeting positive people and looking forward for good business as we have gained a lot of new and big names and clients. The venue is approachable and convenient compared to BKC, however the numbering of stalls is a very difficult exercise for all. We loved the infrastructure but we need more branding outside to attract more clients.”

“The show is superb. We have new customers and forged many new relationships this time. The advantage of a new space is that we get fresh new walk-ins. IIJS is the best platform and we find the dull shades aesthetically pleasing as it contrasts with the glamorous products we have. Customers not only look at the name of the brand, they check out the jewellery and then enter the space. That gives chance to those jewellers who may not have a big brand name, yet their work stands out. So, this uniformity is a commendable step towards achieving unbiased business opportunities. We have launched Vadhu, Virasat, Ahalya and Sionaah collections here specifically at IIJS. Sionaah is a collection of jewellery that is inspired from waterfalls.”

“The response to the IIJS has been phenomenal. Inspite of the rising prices there is a demand, people have a hunger for variety. My brand is young and has a progressive outlook, thus we have launched collections in the trending open setting polki and diamond jewellery with consumer specific tastes, especially for IIJS.

IIJS is so special for the entire nation and the world, as I know not only us, but the whole world waits for this event to showcase their best. We have designed our stall from the insides would really appreciate and need more display space outside the booth. I feel that if stalls could be segregated into different halls there would be less

“We have been participating since 8 to 9 years and always had a stall in Hall 1. We didn’t participate in Bangaluru. We have a stall here now in Hall 6, as we/ have no choice. Though customers took too long to reach here and find us, business from the second day onwards was amazing.

Uniformity is a well thought out plan and it is working wonderfully. We have received good footfalls. However I would like to suggest that with the world class convention centre at JIO Garden available, parking also available one can avoid the chaos that is being experienced here.”

IIJS Premiere has established a benchmark in the industry and enables us to showcase our products and understand the market better. It’s a platform where we interact with customers. We participants from the 1st Edition of IIJS & everytime we get better response. IIJS Premiere helps us communicate with a huge number of buyers and provides an international platform to distributed our periodicals. The show gives a boost to the Indian market as it also popularises Indian traditional jewellery trends in international markets. We strongly believe the show is going to help us more in future and will give an opportunity to take business to a new level.

WGC Suggests ‘An SRO for India’s Gold Industry’

providing certification for members who adopt these codes, engaging

The World Gold Council has launched a report titled SRO for India’s Gold Industry. In the foreword to the report, Somasundaram PR, Regional CEO, India, WGC noting the size of India’s market as one of the largest in the world adds that it is rich in heritage, tradition and a central part of our culture and customs. The gold industry serving the market includes thousands of participants, from manufacturers to retailers, from assayers to refiners and from hallmarkers to bullion traders. Many industry participants observe high standards, care about customers, act responsibly and follow industry best practice. “However,” adds Somasundaram that their “efforts are neither standardised nor codified. As such, these efforts are not recognised and they do not deliver the value that they should. The World Gold Council believes that this must change. We have already developed a set of Retail Gold Investment Principles, to build trust across the industry and drive demand for gold as a safe and rewarding retail investment.”

Somasundaram PR, Regional CEO, India, WGC further said, “India’s gold market is now ready for the next stage for evolution, with the establishment of professionally run self-regulatory organisation (SRO). The organisation will build on the work of the Swarna Adarsh Abhiyan initiative – devising a code of conduct for every industry vertical,

with stakeholders across the gold value chain and advocating for best practice. The organisation would serve as the conscience keeper of the industry. The first steps have already been taken in this process; multiple stakeholders have been consulted and further consultations are underway. We believe that the time is right for the Indian gold industry to have its own SRO –an organisation that will allow members to demonstrate their credentials, attract customers, grow their businesses and drive trust across the gold market.”

The report features an overview the Indian gold industry which addresses pertinent issues like lack of trust, the unorganized sector, over reliance on international market for gold imports and the lack of infrastructure and financial support. Topics like tackling frequent changes in the industry and taxation issues, presence of multi industry bodies in the gold sector and limited influence in the global market are addressed. The second section deals with the pertinent question, why India’s gold market needs an SRO. 7 key principles are listed in the report that elaborate on the advantages of SRO. The third section has a plan of action that suggests how to best structure an SRO for India’s gold market.

a -1.3% decrease.

FCRF Board member Ishaia Gol explained: “It is evident that the increase in prices is driven by two market forces that haven’t occurred simultaneously in quite some time: That is, high demand for fancy colour diamonds on the retail side, and fierce competition on rough in tenders.”

Gold jewellery demand likely to contract in second and third quarters of FY23: ICRA

Gold jewellery demand in India is likely to decline in the second and third quarters of this fiscal due to hike in import duty, high volatility in prices and inflationary pressure, according to a report.

While demand is likely to contract by 8 per cent year-on-year in the second quarter of FY23, the decline is expected to be higher at 15 per cent in the third quarter due to the exceptionally high base in the same period of FY22, Icra said in a report.

According to the report, the exceptional third quarter performance in FY22 was due to the post-Covid reopening of the economy and the substantially high demand in the wedding and festive seasons.

Nonetheless, overall industry is expected to grow by a moderate 10 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) in FY23 on the back of strong performance in the first quarter of FY23 and steady demand in wedding and festive season in the current fiscal.

The organised jewellery retail industry’s revenue is likely to grow at a higher pace of 14 per cent y-o-y in FY23, driven by continued store expansions, the report added.

“In addition, an increase in other discretionary spending on things like travel due to lower restrictions and a likely reduction in the share of jewellery purchases in overall wedding expenditure, which was higher last year due to restrictions around gatherings, are also factors that can affect demand. Rural demand for gold is also likely to be impacted by uncertain monsoons in

the current year and higher interest rates on agricultural loans which could dent disposable incomes,” Icra Senior Vice President and Group Head Jayanta Roy said.

The jewellery retail sector is estimated to have grown by a robust 88 per cent y-on-y in the first quarter of FY23, driven by strong demand during the Akshaya Tritiya season and continued momentum in wedding purchases, the report further stated.

This strong growth comes on a relatively low base of the first quarter of FY22, it added.

Meanwhile, the report revealed that the industry consumption surpassed pre-pandemic levels in the April-June quarter of FY23, given the sharp recovery after the pandemic-induced disruptions witnessed during the first quarter of the last two fiscals.

Demand in FY23 is likely to be 30

per cent higher than the pre-Covid levels seen in FY20, banking on the robust growth during the first quarter.

The Icra report further stated that the estimated revenue growth for organised players is expected to be healthy at 14 per cent y-o-y in FY23, driven primarily by anticipated store expansions and a gradual shift from the unorganised segment to the organised players.

Post the healthy levels of operating profitability seen in FY21 and FY22 on the back of inventory gains, profitability in FY23 is estimated to witness some moderation because of an increase in operating costs, it said.

Nevertheless, margins of organised retailers are likely to remain higher than the average levels seen over the last decade and are expected to stabilise at around 7-7.5 per cent over the medium term.

Aisshpra Gems and Jewels, and SL Shet Diamond house celebrate Independence Day with special activities

The gems and jewellery industry rose up to the occasion of Independence Day. Different brands played with the numerals of India’s 75th year of Independence to provide attractive discounts and excite the trade. Few took the opportunity to celebrate the occasion with memorable activities. Aisshpra Gems and Jewels, and SL Shet Diamond House were two such brands.

“The entire family of Aisshpra, including 500-600 staff of the jewellery and real estate wings of the company, began their activity from their flagship Gorakhpur store around 8:30 am on 15th August,” said Vaibhav Saraf, Director, Aisshpra

hand mangalsutras

Mangalsutras have been facing some evolutions of late. Gone are the days when a bride from the urban markets would be happy with a traditional gold and beads design. It’s time to add some fashion in the traditional Hindu jewellery, and Navrathan Jewellers has come up with their rendition of studded hand mangalsutras.

When asked about the market need that promoted creation of such jewellery, a spokesperson from the digital marketing team of the brand said that the market has always been rooting for lightweight variables of traditional jewellery such as mangalsutras. “People want lightweight, multi-purpose jewellery these days. That pushed us to design mangalsutras that look trendy and

come at an affordable price point,” he said.

The retailer has enhanced the appeal of this traditional ornament by adding oodles of style to it. The hand mangalsutras can be fashionably worn on all occasions as the beads are intelligently added to the bottom part of the bracelet while diamonds sit pretty on top.

What steals the show is the studded diamonds and colour gemstones in the hand mangalsutras. They also double up as hand bracelets and has inarguably become the perfect launch for the upcoming Teej. This is a great example of having the youth stay connected to traditional customs and assets by stylising them according to current preferences and thus increasing acceptance.

BC Sen Jewellers creates brilliant commercial for occasion-less gifting

Occasion-less gifting isn’t common in jewellery. When the product is luxurious, it’s a natural tendency for its target audience to seek occasions for gifting. Nevertheless, when emotional attachment is strong, one doesn’t need occasions to thank a loved

one for his/her contributions. This rakshabandhan, BC Sen Jewellers delivered a masterstroke of a Bengali commercial with their latest video.

The video shows a young man relishing childhood memories of his elder sister who’s going to be

married. Reminiscing about her utterly confused character, he gets cold feet about letting her leave her family to embark on a marital journey. Trade buyers ready to do business at JGW Singapore

International buyers are ready to hop onto planes to attend Jewellery & Gem WORLD (JGW), which is returning fully in-person for the first time since 2019 in Singapore. The fair will present the newest products of around 1,000 exhibitors from 30+ countries and regions from 27 to 30 September at the Singapore EXPO.

The iconic B2B jewellery show –previously known as the September Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair – is temporarily relocating from its Hong Kong home base to the Lion City, a destination currently more accessible to overseas buyers and exhibitors. Unlike Hong Kong, which still subjects travellers to a seven-day mandatory quarantine in a designated hotel among others, Singapore welcomes fully vaccinated visitors with a seamless quarantinefree and test-free travel experience.

Prior to the Singapore buying event, Informa Markets Jewellery will organise a special-edition fair in Hong Kong catering mainly to domestic trade and jewellery lovers from 16 to 19 September.

Product sourcing opportunities

Buyers will discover a wealth of resources at JGW, which will be segmented into 20+ pavilions for easy navigation. The impressive list includes pavilions representing the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC), Colombia, Germany, Hong Kong, International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA), India, Israel Diamond Institute (IDI), Italy, Japan, Korea, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkey and the US, among others. Also a must-see for retailers, brands and high-net worth buyers are the Premier Pavilion, a space that brings together some of the top names in luxury jewellery and gemstone manufacturing, and product pavilions featuring extensive displays of loose diamonds, pearls, coloured

gemstones, fine jewellery, antique and vintage collections, jadeite jade, pre-owned jewellery, silver creations, lab-grown diamonds and packaging and technology solutions to name a few.

“JGW gives us the opportunity to discover the latest products and innovations that our industry peers have worked on in the past several months, meet some new faces from far-off places and reconnect with friends and colleagues we have lost touch with or have only seen through endless Zoom calls for close to three years,” said David Bondi, Senior Vice President of Informa Markets in Asia. “It’s time we get together and energise our market. I am calling on our industry partners to join us in Singapore this September and return home with fresh ideas and inspiration for their business.”

JGW aims to bring global buyers and sellers together in the most efficient, productive and secure way possible, added Celine Lau, Director of Jewellery Fairs at Informa Markets Jewellery. “Our mission is to deliver an engaging sourcing experience where relationships are strengthened and new partnerships are forged,” Lau said. “Through our platform, we want to help everyone to better their business, be it through product discovery, networking or education.”

Also new to Informa Markets Jewellery this year is Jewellery & Gem ASEAN Bangkok (JGAB), which is debuting from 2 to 5 November at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC). JGAB is a B2B cash-and-carry event that allows buyers from Southeast Asia and beyond to instantly replenish their stocks for the busy Christmas and New Year selling season. The Bangkok fair is positioned as the

industry’s last wholesale buying fair of the year.

Meanwhile, in Hong Kong, preparations are in full swing for JGW Hong Kong Special Edition, which will be held from 16 to 19 September at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). Customised to adapt to Hong Kong’s restrictions on international arrivals and crossborder travel, the sourcing event aims to generate cross-market opportunities and onsite sales for suppliers by opening its doors to jewellery lovers, in addition to its core trade audience comprising wholesalers, retailers and brands.

Asia’s much-awaited fair of the year to feature 20+ pavilions powered by nearly 1,000 exhibitors from 30 countries and regions; Thrill of in-person B2B sourcing experience, quarantine-free travel to Lion City among September show’s main draws
