Yield of Dreams How ironic – Barren County is full of fertile fields. It is the No. 1 producer of milk‚ burley tobacco‚ hay and cattle in the state‚ according to the USDA’s January 2006 agriculture statistics report. In fact, Barren County has more cattle than any other county east of the Mississippi River. Agriculture experts point out that the county features great land for cattle because there are plenty of forages. Also, the soil produces bountiful and nutritious grasses.

Way To Go, Trevor Everyone could take a lesson in life from Trevor Baise. The young Barren County resident made news – and a difference – when he invited 27 friends to attend his 13th birthday party, but told them that he didn’t want any gifts for himself. Instead, Trevor asked all of his guests to contribute to someone else. As a result of his generosity, $300 in cash and gift cards was ultimately donated to the Estes family of Barren County. In late 2007, the Estes family moved to Texas to begin full-time faith-based missionary work in Reynosa, Mexico.

If you see a 40-foot tyrannosaurus rex on the side of Interstate 65, you are nearing Dinosaur World in Cave City. The outdoor attraction is filled with more than 100 life-sized dinosaurs, including a huge triceratops that now guards the entrance. One of the more popular park attractions is a Fossil Dig where kids can sift through sand in search of authentic fossils to take home. Dinosaur World also has an indoor Prehistoric Museum, Movie Cave, picnic areas and a large playground.

Fast Facts Proud of Its Patriots Barren County is proud to honor those who have served our country. Cave City, Freedom, Hiseville and Park City all have outdoor memorials that pay tribute to Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s veterans. All four cities also host Veterans Day events every Nov. 11, with 21-gun salutes being part of the ceremonies. Interesting sites in the county include a Revolutionary War cemetery at the intersection of Front and Franklin streets in Glasgow, and Fort Williams that dates back to Civil War days.

The Big 5-0 Lots and Lots of Stuff For sale: Just about anything at the annual Highway 68/80 Yard Sale. The event will be held June 6-8, 2008, stretching 400 miles from Maysville in northeast Kentucky to Paducah. Included in the huge sale is a section of U.S. Hwy. 80 from Bowling Green west to Columbus, Ky. The 22nd annual Roller Coaster Fair Yard Sale will occur Oct. 2-4, 2008. It spans along U.S. Highway 63 from Cave City, across Barren County, south to Tennessee around Dale Hollow Lake and back.

The Practical Nursing School turned 50 in 2007 at Bowling Green Technical College, Glasgow (Health) Campus. The school was established in 1957 by T.J. Samson Hospital, the State Tuberculosis Hospital and Western State Psychiatric Hospital to help meet demand for more qualified nurses. During its 50 years, the school has graduated more than 2,000 students who have gone on to become registered nurses and licensed practical nurses. Interestingly enough, only two directors have guided the Practical Nursing School during its half-century of service. Rebecca Forrest headed the program for 44 years, and Dr. Jimmy Isenberg has been director since 2002.

Q The Glasgow Highland Games celebrate the Scottish and Irish heritage of Glasgow each year during the weekend following Memorial Day. Q Television journalist Diane Sawyer was born in Glasgow on Dec. 22, 1945. Q Legendary outlaw Jesse James once rode through Barren County holding up stagecoaches. Q Glasgow has more than 40 clubs, organizations and community groups, including Little League, Lions, Rotary, Kiwanis and a YMCA. All About Academics Whether you want to earn a bachelor’s degree or learn to weld, Glasgow’s South Regional Postsecondary Education Center provides it all. Hosting classes and programs from nearby Western Kentucky University and BG Technical College of the Kentucky Community & Technical College System, the center encompasses an array of educational opportunities, from associate’s degrees to master’slevel courses as well as certified courses in industry-related skills. See If It Floats Glasgow has one of the largest evening Christmas parades in Kentucky. Thousands of residents watch the chamber-hosted event that always occurs on the first Saturday in December. Nearly 200 entrants sign up for the parade that stretches through the downtown streets of Glasgow. MURAL PROJECT TO TRANSFORM EMPTY SPACES DOWNTOWN

lank walls will soon be a thing of the past in downtown Glasgow, at least if Linda Wells has her way. The Glasgow City Council member has long been a fan of outdoor murals, and has wanted to see more go up downtown. Now, through the efforts of Wells, the GlasgowBarren County Chamber of Commerce’s Arts Committee and the South Central Kentucky Cultural Center, bricks and mortar are becoming blank canvases. “I’ve always looked at the backs of those buildings across from the Plaza Theatre and thought that we needed something there to attract attention,” says Wells, who also serves on the SCKCC’s board of directors. “So after I was reelected in 2006 I went to the property owners and asked them if they’d be interested, and the majority said they were.” At the same time, the SCKCC itself had a mural project in the works, thanks to an out-of-town visitor with Glasgow roots. Jane Westmoreland traveled from her home in Lubbock, Texas, a few years ago to see where her grandfather, Henry

The downtown mural project is supported by the Glasgow-Barren Chamber of Commerce’s Arts Committee and promises to dress up the downtown area with art that promotes the community and its quality of life.

Raubold, lived and worked. Raubold, whose business interests included the Raubold Restaurant and Glasgow Ice Plant, was a well-known local figure and SCKCC officials had plenty of information to share. So much so, in fact, that Westmoreland donated $5,000 to the center in appreciation for all the hospitality she and her family were shown. Those funds are being used for what everyone involved hopes is the first of many murals showcasing the community. The 25-by-40-foot mural is going up on the Leech building, and will depict a newspaper’s front page, and incorporate both directions to the center and an advertisement for Raubold’s confectionery. Local artist David Jones has been tapped to create the work, which he says should be completed in late spring or early summer. “[SCKCC officials] wanted something that pointed out where to turn to get to the center, so we looked at several ideas that could do that,” Jones says. “The article and pictures in the mural are images from the cultural center, and ‘open year round’ is the headline.” Jones’ artwork is already on public display. He has painted murals on the exterior of Weis Jewelry and other buildings, 10

but this is the first public initiative to plan murals in the downtown area. Jones says he is excited to be adding something to the downtown visual landscape. “I’ve been doing sketches for the buildings across from the Plaza,” he says. “I’m playing with the architectural element for those – dressing it up, adding more ornamentation to the windows and cornices. I want to add accents, make it look like the front rather than the back of a building, paint over the bricked-up windows so they look like actual windows again.” Over at the chamber, the mural conversation initially centered on locations near South Green Street and West Main Street, the two primary arteries for traffic coming into town. With the advent of the SCKCC mural, those conversations quickly turned into planning sessions. “We’re so excited, and to have a local artist doing the work means so much to us,” says Betty Brogan, arts committee chair. “We want to showcase what we have downtown, and the first mural is going to give a vivid impression of what lies ahead at the cultural center. We have a lot of buildings that are in need of facelifts, and this will liven them up a little and add some pizzazz.” G L A SGOW

hen it comes to tourism, Mammoth Cave is the crown jewel of what south-central Kentucky offers. The national park hosts more than 5,000 visitors on a summer day, with most taking a cave tour. Frozen Niagara, Drapery Room, Giant’s Coffin, Star Chamber – the names lure visitors underground to view the formations that trickling water continues to carve in limestone. “Upon entering Mammoth Cave National Park from any direction, visitors are greeted with a feeling of peace and quiet as they travel roads lined with thousands of trees. The busy pace of life simply slows down. It is wonderful,” says Ann Stewart, executive director of the Glasgow-Barren County Tourist and Convention Commission. “The roads lead to the Visitor Center, the ferry, to hiking trails and overlooks, campgrounds and picnic areas. now, I have a calm feeling simply trying to describe what a wonderful place the park is.” Guides lead a variety of tours, tailored to diverse interests. Children ages 8-12 don hardhats and headlamps to explore off-the-beaten-paths on the Trog Tour. Photography buffs tote their tripods on an evening tour. Adventurous tourists wear knee pads to crawl through incredibly narrow slots and scale cave walls on the Wild Cave Tour. Above ground, visitors can enjoy the park’s rolling hills and hollows with a leisurely drive, pausing for a picnic, and hiking or riding a horse along a leafy trail. Those with a yen to be near the water can canoe or kayak the Green and Nolin rivers, fish for bass and blue gill, pitch a tent on an island or catch a ride on an old-time ferry. Local residents and returning visitors to this area know there is a lot more G L A SGOW

outdoors beyond the park’s boundaries. For starters, there were more than 20,000 acres of public lands created when the Army Corps of Engineers dammed the Barren River to create a reservoir. Glasgow Daily Times retired editor and outdoor writer Joel Wilson finds the reservoir good for large and smallmouth bass and crappie, “my personal favorite.” Fisherfolk from other states are drawn to the lake to fish for striped bass, a hybrid in the 20-lb. class that Wilson says are “fairly easy to catch.” Boaters can put in at eight boat ramps and stock up on bait, beverages and fuel at three marinas. Visitors flock year-round to the Barren River Lake State Resort Park, where they can stay in one of the 22 cottages or at the lodge overlooking the lake. RVs and campers fill up the campground popular with those who want to relax closer to nature. The lodge has an outdoor pool, and the

beach attracts locals and tourists alike in the summer. In addition to hiking or biking park trails, visitors can climb on horses for a guided trail ride. Outside the park, Webb-Taylor Horseback Riding & Boarding provides a gentle ride for children and hosts cookouts for groups. Wilson, who likes to hunt and fish, says plentiful deer and wild turkey attract out-of-towners to Barren County. “There’s also a good abundance of small game here – squirrels, quail and rabbits,” he says. For more leisurely activity, the Brigadoon State Nature Preserve is a quiet location to spot many kinds of birds and view spring wildflowers. Stewart recommends driving the back roads. “Travelers will find country stores, craftsmen, antique shops and unique little towns that take you back in time,” she says. I M AG E S G L A S G O W. hen it comes to business growth, downtown renovation, tourism and other core economicdevelopment issues, Glasgow officials have many agendas but very similar goals. And their ability to work together continues to pay major dividends. “One of the beauties of our community is the cooperative spirit throughout the city and county,” says Ann Stewart, marketing and tourism director for the Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce. “All of us work well together; issues are identified and taken care of through a cooperative effort. I don’t see that in a lot of other communities I visit.” Positive efforts are getting noticed in a big way. Last year, The Progressive Farmer magazine named Barren County the “No. 1 Best Place to Live in Rural America,” an award Stewart says literally took her breath away. “They called me and said we were going to be ranked, but didn’t know much else,” she says. “Their writer and photographer

came and talked to us about cost of living, quality of life, cultural issues, and our agricultural and industrial economic base. When the ranking news came, well, talk about proud!” Glasgow’s downtown figures prominently into its quality of life, and Cayce Harlow, the newly hired director of Renaissance/Main Street Glasgow says her organization benefits greatly from input and suggestions from the community. “Everyone wants to help and offer their services to us,” Harlow says. “People are really excited about what’s been done, and what we’re going to do. And with everybody cooperating we can get a lot more done.” Quality of life issues directly relate to the county’s employment picture, and with several industrial parks and strong recruitment efforts always going on, the GlasgowBarren County Industrial Development Economic Authority, or IDEA, keeps the area on a lot of radar screens. IDEA continues to lure employers into the Highland Glen Industrial Park and its other sites, has established a work ethic certification program in the county’s high schools and also partners with local colleges to offer industries training and education programs for their employees. “We have limited resources, so we try to spend our money wisely,” notes Carole Smith, chair of the Glasgow-Barren County Tourist Commission. “When everybody is working on some aspect of the same thing, we’re able to get the most we can out of our dollars. Each program supports the others – we work very hard to do that here.”

A Wee Bit o’ Celtic Fun UP TO 15,000 VISITORS ATTEND THE ANNUAL GLASGOW HIGHLAND GAMES

ilts, bagpipes, Irish rock bands and tugs-of-war share the spotlight annually during the four-day Glasgow Highland Games at the Barren River Lake State Resort Park. The 2008 event, scheduled for May 29 through June 1, marks the 23rd consecutive games. A celebration of Celtic heritage, the Glasgow Highland Games lure 12,000 to 15,000 revelers annually, and Maureen Hendrick, executive secretary since 1993, believes she knows why. “For the out-of-town people, I think what entices them is how extraordinarily friendly everyone is at our games. From the moment they step out on the field, they are home. For the local people,

it’s pride in their heritage. Glasgow was founded by a Scotsman,” she says. Each year, the head of a Celtic family is Chief of the Games. Hendrick says that “99 percent of the chiefs we bring in live in Scotland, so having a chief at your games is a big novelty. Everyone wants to meet their clan chief.” The 2008 Chief of the Games is David Charles Irvine, the 26th baron of Drum Castle in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Popular events at the games include lunch with the chief, the clachneart (stone) toss, sheepdog demonstrations, balladeer concerts and the parade of tartans. Hendrick’s favorite event is the Alice Wallace Young Children’s Tug-of-

War, when adults of the Wallace clan take on the bairns at the festival and then feign surprise when they lose. “Miraculously, year after year, the children beat the adults. Watching the look on their faces when they actually win is amazing,” she says, adding that the adults “play it to the hilt.” The children are organized by Mad Max McDougald, a big bear of a man who’s a gadfly of highland games across the Southeast. Commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel, Mad Max is a permanent fixture at the Glasgow event. “He’s the Scottish pied piper,” Hendrick says. “He takes a group of children and completely mesmerizes them.”

die Bell may be a retired science and reading teacher, but that doesn’t mean she stopped teaching. On the 13 acres that Bell and her husband, Bob, own on Bristletown Road, 20 butterfly gardens, two vegetable gardens and an orchard thrive amid natural woods and a babbling creek. It’s Bell’s outdoor classroom, and hundreds of Glasgow youngsters have been willing and enthusiastic students tromping through this little bit of heaven. Because fourth graders face a state competency exam in science, Bell makes it a point to host students in that grade. “We go through the woods and look at habitats. Our property line runs right through the middle of a creek, and the kids learn about weathering and erosion and decomposing,” Bell explains. “We take logs apart, and I give them a little digging tool and a magnifying glass so they can look at the tree turning to dirt.” In 2007, she hosted about 60 preschoolers from Highland Elementary and introduced them to butterflies. Her expertise on the subject has earned her the moniker “The Butterfly Lady.” Bell cultivates specific trees, bushes and plants to attract an assortment of butterflies, and carefully watches for butterfly eggs on host plants. “The birds and the frogs like to eat them, so I bring them in the house,” she says. She does the same for occasional caterpillars, plucking them up and gently plopping them in a cage before they reach the pupa stage. “I found a pupa here the other day on the floor,” she says. “The caterpillar had gotten out of the cage and attached underneath the couch or this end table. There’s one hanging in the dining room window right now hibernating, and I’ve just left it.” G L A SGOW

Center Hosts Smithsonian Treat O

n Oct. 11, 2008, the Smithsonian Institution comes to Barren County for six weeks in the form of a five-kiosk traveling exhibit designed specifically for rural audiences and small museums. Called “Between Fences,” the display examines the role of property boundaries in America’s history and landscape. “It’s not just farm fences, although that’s included. It includes a wide scope of boundaries that people set for themselves and set for others,” explains Kay Harbison, vice president of the Barren County Historical Foundation. Harbison oversees the exhibits and collections of the South Central Kentucky Cultural Center, the Glasgow museum where the Smithsonian exhibit will be housed. Local historians, including Harbison, are compiling an exhibit to complement the Smithsonian display that will feature early maps of the area. Also known as the Museum of the Barrens, the South Central Kentucky Cultural Center honors the history and heritage of the Barrens – Barren, Metcalf, Hart, Allen and Monroe counties. In 2001, the museum moved to its fourth location, the old Kentucky Pants factory in downtown Glasgow. Today, two of

the three floors are packed with displays depicting life in the region beginning with the Paleo-Indians 12,000 years ago. Other displays include “Let Me Entertain You,” a look at musical instruments, toys and other artifacts of fun from 1850 to 1929; a one-room schoolhouse; a military exhibit from the Civil War through Desert Storm; and a Victorian parlor and bedroom. Harbison’s favorite exhibit is a 1940sera general store. “It was an interesting one to do – and kind of reminiscent of

my childhood, remembering some of the stores in the area before you had Wal-Marts and the big department stores,” she says. “At the time, I guess, when I’m working on them, all of them are my favorites, but that one I just really like.” Open by the end of 2008 will be a new exhibit on the mourning practices and death customs of the area. “A lot of people think that is kind of morbid,” Harbison says, “and yet it is part of our culture.”

The Cattle Call Continues

ot even a fire can stop Lyon Hutcherson, owner of the Farmers Livestock Market on U.S. Route 68 in Glasgow. The work of an arsonist, fire destroyed Hutcherson’s business in August 2006. On June 28, 2007, sales resumed in a new steel building of nearly 80,000 square feet. Why didn’t Hutcherson simply retire after his business went up in the smoke? “If I go out, I want to go out on my own. I don’t want somebody burning me out,” he says. Hutcherson has spent his life in the livestock business. His father launched a livestock market in Glasgow in 1929, and after Hutcherson finished school, he returned to Glasgow in 1960 and opened his own market. In 1969, he bought out his father and built the wooden structure in 1974 that burned 32 years later. “When I bought him out, we were running somewhere around 600 to 700 head, mainly hogs and veal calves at that time,” Hutcherson recalls. “We don’t have any hogs now.” Today, the market moves more than 1,600 beef cattle at the once-a-week sale. “A lot of our cattle go west to the feed lots,” he says. While the new building was under construction, Hutcherson continued cattle sales at the Mammoth Cave Dairy Sales facility. Yet his customers were glad to get back to the Glasgow site, and the long line of farmers’ trucks pulling trailers attested to that fact on the day sales restarted. “The community has been great. They have supported me wholeheartedly,” Hutcherson says. “After the fire, people came in and volunteered. In fact, the Amish even came in and cleaned up the place.” 22

Memories of a Glasgow Great W

hen Charles Hunter graduated from Glasgow’s Ralph Bunche High School in 1962, the Division 1 basketball scholarship offers had been rolling in. “I had several offers including Cincinnati, Kansas, Bradley University. The University of Louisville was one of the top offers I received, and I was the first African-American to be recruited to play basketball at U of L,” Hunter recalls. Yet it was Oklahoma City University that nabbed Ralph Bunche’s all-time leading scorer. It was a decision he never regretted. Hunter scored 1,319 points and pulled down 584 rebounds during his college basketball career, and the team went to the NCAA Tournament all four years that he played. Hunter was recruited by the Boston Celtics, but an ankle injury suffered during his last college semester eventually ended his professional career. Armed with his bachelor’s degree in education, Hunter took a job as a teacher and basketball coach at the Atterbury Job Corps Center in Edinburgh, Ind. Hunter’s rich career has included

about 18 years in education and another 18 in industrial human resources. Breaking down segregation barriers has been another pursuit. Hunter was one of the first black players on the Oklahoma City squad, and he remembers “some heckling and name calling” when the team played schools that weren’t integrated. Yet one of his top college memories is when his team faced Texas Western, which started five black players, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 1966. “We were the two

top independents in the nation that year,” Hunter says. Oklahoma City lost the game, and Texas Western went on to win the national championship, beating an all-white University of Kentucky team 72-65. Texas Western’s exploits are featured in the 2006 Disney motion picture Glory Road. Considering Charles Hunter’s athletic, academic and professional successes, you could say he has enjoyed a glory road of his own. – Stories by Sharon H. Fitzgerald

Co., launched in 1891 by J.B. Hatcher in what is today Park City. The company is still owned and operated by Hatcher’s descendants. “It started as a general store,” explains President Bill Bucher, husband of Hatcher’s great-granddaughter, Jane Arterburn, who is also active in the management of the business. “Over the years, they started selling hardware and building materials here at Park City, and then a store was added at Cave City in the 1930s. After World War II, my father-in-law returned from service as a fighter pilot, and the store was opened in Horse Cave. Then we built the store in Glasgow in 1994.” With the four locations, Square Deal specializes in building materials, hardware, windows, doors and paint. In Glasgow, a custom millwork shop specializes in cabinetry and has carved a niche as a designer and custom builder of courthouse interiors, from jury boxes to judges benches. “Kentucky went on a binge of building justice centers, to separate the county court systems from the county administration,” Bucher says. For Bucher’s business, that’s been a square deal.

The history of the railroad in Glasgow dates back to 1856.

FREIGHT RIDES THE RAILS Robert A. Lessenberry is a walking encyclopedia of railroad history in Barren County. As president of the Glasgow Railway Company Inc. since 1965, he’s also the head of the county’s only rail business. “The history dates back to 1856, when the first charter was issued for a railroad from Glasgow to what is now called Park City, about the time the L&N was being built from Nashville to Louisville,” Lessenberry explains. The Glasgow to Park City short line was built to intercept the L&N, thus creating an economic corridor that still serves the county well today. Passenger travel was 24

eventually phased out, leaving one train traversing between the two cities on weekdays hauling wood, paper, fertilizer, building materials and other freight. The former L&N line now is operated by CSX Transportation. Lessenberry says the 1856 rail line was a source of contention in those early days. In fact, a decision by Barren County leaders to raise taxes to complete the line resulted in an eastern portion of the county seceding and eventually becoming part of Metcalfe County. A RICH HERITAGE Carrying on an ol’ family tradition is the business of Square Deal Lumber

A TROPHY CAREER Like most young boys who grew up hunting in south central Kentucky, Ed Rigdon read Outdoor Life magazine. One of the advertisements changed his life. “When I was a kid, I would see those ads for taxidermy school,” he recalls, “and I answered one of them.” That was 1963, and the teenager first enjoyed taxidermy just as a hobby. In the early 1970s, he decided to make it a career. Today, Rigdon Taxidermy in Cave City features a showroom with examples of Rigdon’s art. “I like taking something that’s lifeless and making it look like it’s alive again. Waterfowl is my specialty,” he says. That didn’t prevent him from once preserving an Angus bull that, when it was alive, fetched $375,000. Gun season keeps him busy. “I’m here seven days a week, from 8 in the morning until 10 at night,” he says. While Rigdon enjoys a brisk business, he reluctantly acknowledges that taxidermy is a dying art. “When I die and the doors are closed here, all the knowledge that I have acquired is gone,” he says. EXTENDING EDUCATION In Barren County, cows are king. Just ask Gary Tilghman, the county extension agent for agriculture and natural resources for Barren County Cooperative Extension. “Barren County is the largest dairy county in Kentucky and largest cattle county and largest beef county,” says Tilghman, who’s been an agent for about 30 years. A partnership of the University of Kentucky and Kentucky State University, Cooperative Extension offers education outreach programs on a wealth of topics from farming to consumerism. For example, Barren County Cooperative Extension partners with the Chamber of Commerce and other community organizations to sponsor and organize Dairy Day, held each June “to promote the dairy industry, salute the dairy farmers, make the community aware of all they do and enjoy the products that they make,” Tilghman says. Events include a milk balloon toss and cheese sampling. “Folks come from all over the place,” he says. “I remember a lady participated in our ice-cream eating contest a few years back, and she was from Minnesota. any people do a lot of business at the bank, but it’s not often that a chamber of commerce actually does its business in one. That’s the case for the GlasgowBarren County Chamber of Commerce, however. After several years in a “little, bitty shoebox of a building,” as Ann Stewart, marketing and tourism director describes it, the organization took over the former Farmers National Bank. “The bank wanted the property we were on, which was owned by the board of our local library, to build a new branch,” Stewart says. “So we left that building, which we had completely outgrown, and moved into the upstairs of the building we have now.” When the bank relocated the chamber moved downstairs and set about the process of integrating its operations into the bank space. Given that the building dates back to the early 1900s, there was a lot to work with. 26

“There’s marble, granite, cherry paneling … it’s beautiful,” Stewart says. “We built in a board meeting room where the teller cages used to be, and we have replaced the letters that had been on the building’s exterior and placed a historic plaque on the front. We also kept the three safes, and use them as storage. There’s a lot of history associated with this building, so we’re in the process of gathering pictures of it over the years so we can create a display for one wall.” The renovations didn’t come cheap, but the chamber benefited from a great deal of community support. “A group, Friends of the Chamber, was formed, and they contacted business owners and long-term chamber members to help raise money to pay off the construction loan,” Stewart says. “We were able to pay the note off last October, and even set aside a little money for capital improvements.”

Those funds will likely be used to further renovate the now-empty upstairs space as well as the basement, so the chamber may soon be looking for tenants. “There’s been some discussion with other organizations about moving in here, and that’s something we hope will happen,” Stewart says. “ We have lots of room in here for expansion, or for someone else to use.” In the meantime, the chamber’s full roster of programs and events is keeping the building alive with activity, which is exactly what the organization wants. “It’s very important to us to be a focus for the community,” she continues. “Every town is usually centered around a bank, and that’s been the case here. There are a lot of families who have ties to this building, so we work to keep it in good shape so people can come in and see what it once was, and what we’re doing with it today.” – Joe Morris G L A SGOW

Success Breeds Success GLASGOW SCHOOLS GIVE STUDENTS A SECOND CHANCE WITH NEW PROGRAM

he phrase “back to school” has taken on a significant meaning for some students in Glasgow. On Jan. 3, 2008, the school door opened for five students joining the Glasgow Independent Schools newest program, the Success Academy. The five were starting anew after taking time out from school. “They are good kids, smart kids, who have had a tough time,” says director Bob Reece of the first students to enroll in the program. Reece returned to the Glasgow system himself after retiring from an administrative position. “Throughout my career I’ve seen the frustration on the faces of kids as they drop out,” he says. “Having this tool and having seen that it has worked elsewhere inspired me to apply.” A local businessman who admired similar programs approached the school system with an offer to bankroll it. Board and staff checked out the concept and added the Success Academy to the alternative learning options. To qualify, students must be at least

16 years old and have accumulated 10 credits before leaving school. They take courses that meet Kentucky’s diploma requirements and some electives, selected from Novel/Star, a Web-based curriculum. The learning is self-paced and fits in nicely with the academy’s job coop program. Students who opt for a co-op job attend school three hours a day and work three hours, receiving credit for time on the job. “They’re learning job skills and life skills – punctuality, responsibility,” Reece says. “Community support is a big part,” he says, “and I’m just getting started building partnerships.” Students work at the hospital, in restaurants and in child care centers. If they do not have a job, they attend school all day. Reece says the Success Academy’s goal is to reduce the dropout rate to near zero by 2012. Superintendent William Ritter calls the academy “one more opportunity” to reach children who have difficulty with learning for a variety of reasons. “We

received a series of grants to follow children from sixth grade on to ensure success,” he says. Students referred to the alternative program by their principals gain supplemental advice and inspiration from system counselors and speakers from the community. The students participate in service learning as well, performing minor chores and beautification activities on the grounds of the school that they attend. The commitment to meeting the needs of all students is part of the reason Glasgow Independent Schools has been ranked ninth in quality among 176 school districts in Kentucky. Ritter says the students’ high scores on state assessment tests are “a well respected achievement” in light of the fact that almost half the 2,000-plus students are considered economically deprived. The Glasgow Independent School System’s excellence was a major factor in The Progressive Farmer magazine selecting Barren County as the best place to live in rural America in 2007. – Gretchen Monti G L A SGOW

arren County schools are known for innovative approaches to educating children. In 2004 Barren County took advantage of the state’s Internet-based high school curriculum to create BAVEL, the Barren Academy for Virtual Enhanced Learning. The program allows students to go online for all course work needed to earn a diploma. Fifty-eight students, about half from the Barren County Schools system, were enrolled in January 2008. “The students come from all walks of life, with some at the top of the class and some not,” BAVEL director Amanda Wright says. Among them are youth who are disabled, home-schooled, teen parents and those who want to enhance their learning or make up credits. The schools benefit from virtual learning by being able to offer an expanded curriculum in a time of teacher shortages and limited capital budgets. The curriculum has plenty of Advanced Placement subjects; core courses required for graduation; specialized science, such as oceanography; and several foreign languages, including Mandarin Chinese. Certified personnel from all over Kentucky teach the courses, draw up tests and grade the students’ work. They keep in touch with individual students by e-mail and telephone. Wright is the local contact who guides students’ program of study and monitors their progress. “I love working with kids and helping them achieve success,” she says. – Gretchen Monti

From the Far Off Broadway Players to student theater, The Plaza brings the performing arts downtown.

verything old is new again at the Plaza Theatre, which is enjoying a successful renaissance since reopening in 2001. The historic theater in downtown Glasgow first opened its doors in 1934, and like many theaters of its day spent the next several decades being adapted and revamped to cater to new film technology and changing audience tastes. Over time the movie projectors stopped, and the Plaza fell dark in the 1990s. Enter city officials, particularly then-Mayor Charlie Honeycutt, who saw the theater as a golden opportunity for the city. After purchasing it for $200,000 in 2001, the city spent the next four years renovating and upgrading the space using a combination of city funds, grant money and private donations. Finally, the refurbished Plaza opened to the public again in April 2005 – and the results have exceeded all expectations. “It’s been a great success,” says Steve Jones, executive director. “The city is very pleased with how things have turned out. And every year we bring in groups and acts that nobody ever thought would come to Glasgow, which is exactly what we set out to do.” The theater rarely shows movies these days, but instead offers a steady stream of concerts, local productions and touring shows. The Plaza Performance Series presents five or six events a year, and the venue is in constant demand for local groups and events. In fact, the 1,064-seat theater often draws a crowd not only from Glasgow, but also from cities as far away as St. Louis, Nashville and even Chicago.

“We’ve only got 14,000 people here in town, so we do have to reach to other places with our marketing,” Jones says. “But we have a good turnout for our season subscription shows, and we pull from a four- and five-state area for big events.” For some, having a fully operational theater in town has meant being able to do things on a grand scale. “We’ve been doing shows in there since it reopened, and it’s wonderful to have it,” says Todd Woodward, who teaches art at Highland Elementary School and directs high school drama and choral productions. “It’s definitely an improvement from the high-school gym,” Woodward says. “It seats so many people and has a beautiful stage area. We still need to do a few things in there, such as add the ability to use backdrops that will raise and lower, but it really is a wonderful place.” Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella will be the students’ spring production and is scheduled for April 18-20. In addition to ongoing maintenance and planned renovations – a historically restored marquee is high on the wish list – the theater’s staff is working on its new office space next door. The former Bowle’s Print and Gift Shop is being renovated to administrative and support space, something the Plaza desperately needed. “I’m working out of the concession stand now, and our technical director has a folding table on the stage, so this is definitely something that we’ve been looking to do,” Jones says. – Joe Morris I M AG E S G L A S G O W. sleep. It’s difficult to do that when you’re in a hospital environment. So we made sure we took extra steps.” Those amenities include queen-size beds, private baths, blow dryers on the wall and toiletries by the sink. “Sometimes our patients report that they sleep better here, even with the electrodes in place. That just lets us know that we’ve done a good job with our environment,” she adds. Word is spreading. In 2005, the center conducted 704 sleep studies, 810 in 2006 and 895 in 2007. “We’re at full capacity,” Aidala says. Studies are conducted six nights a week on patients as young as 6 years old. “We are seeing more and more children with obesity that is linked to sleep apnea, but a lot of our children are of average size and have enlarged tonsils. So it’s actually the tonsils that are obstructing the airway,” Aidala says. Thus, “the first line of defense” is a tonsillectomy, and further treatment usually isn’t required, she says. Since the center opened, Aidala says she’s seen a change in the patients. “Patients are becoming more savvy and Internetfriendly. They’re finding their symptoms and figuring them out. They’re talking on chat rooms to other patients who have the same disorders,” she says. “The patients are more knowledgeable when they come to us now.” Maybe that helps them rest a little easier. – Sharon H. or some people, catching 40 winks is as simple as lying down. For others, restful slumber is a dream. That’s where the Sleep Disorders Center at T.J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow comes in. Since August 2004, the center has been treating patients with a host of sleep problems, from insomnia to sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, periodic limb movement disorder and even narcolepsy, a neurological condition that causes its sufferers to nod off in the blink of an eye. “We have seen our fair share of narcolepsy patients. It’s a rare condition, but it is definitely prevalent here,” says Gwynne Aidala, sleep center coordinator. Most of the center’s patients suffer sleep apnea, which is characterized by breathing pauses during sleep. With obstructive sleep apnea, the soft tissue of the throat collapses, blocking the airway. The center’s bread and butter is conducting overnight sleep studies to monitor a patient’s brain waves, muscle tension, eye movements, respiration, oxygen level and other indicators during sleep. The center has four suites where patients spend the night with numerous electrodes taped to their body. “When we built the sleep labs, there were none like them in the area. Very few, actually, even in the neighboring states,” Aidala recalls. “We made it less of a hospital atmosphere and more of a hotel atmosphere, because the goal here is to get

ith a name celebrating its Scottish heritage, it’s probably par for the course that Glasgow boasts numerous courses on which to play that most Scottish of games – golf. While Glasgow Country Club was established in 1962, its front nine was built in the 1930s, a testament to golf’s long-time appeal in the area. On Dec. 1, 2007, the private club, with about 360 members today, opened the doors to a new clubhouse. “It turned out to be just a fabulous building. It’s really excellent,” says Bobby Lee Hurt, club manager. The walls of the

1970s-era clubhouse were left standing and used in the construction of the new facility. The basement level features the pro shop, cart storage, locker rooms and a recreation room. The first floor’s dining room seats 200, with a smaller room that seats 26 and a lounge that can accommodate about 40. Members may also dine or enjoy a drink on the new deck. Professional golfer Kenny Perry, who lives about 20 miles away, just might be seen enjoying that deck. “I remember the last time he played he said the greens here were faster than PGA Tour greens,” Hurt recalls. Perry is

a former champion of The Follis Invitational, played annually at Glasgow Country Club since 1971. While memberships are available, Fox Hollow Golf Club in Glasgow is open to the public. Nestled in gently rolling hills, the scenic course features wooded areas and meandering streams, both capable of nabbing an errant shot. The club’s first nine opened in 1989, and the second nine in 1996. Other chioces for area play include two courses at Cedar Point Golf Course in Park City, Caveland Golf Course in Horse Cave, Kentucky Hills Golf Course in Summer Shade, the course at Barren River Lake State Resort Park and Diamond Caverns Resort and Golf Club in Park City at the entrance to Mammoth Cave National Park. Tony Vanover, Diamond Caverns course superintendent and manager, says the course enjoys a brisk business from tourists and averages between 30,000 and 40,000 rounds annually. Diamond Caverns features condominiums and a campground with a pool, hot tub, exercise room, spa and miniature golf. You just never know who might drop by for 18 holes, Vanover adds. The Kentucky Headhunters, a country rock group, have played the course, as well as Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show, the band famous for its hit single “Cover of the Rolling Stone.” “After Dr. Hook played their round, they were up in the pro shop playing music,” Vanover recalls. “My wife went crazy because I didn’t call her.” – Sharon H. ANNUAL EVENTS Glasgow Highland Games Glasgow is host to one of the premier Scottish Highland Games in the world. The Highland Games are the weekend after Memorial Day. Global Fest in the Barrens Each year on the first Saturday in September, the diversity of our community is celebrated around the public square with foreign food, dances and demonstrations. Industry Appreciation Week Barren County industries are honored the first week of September with events like a golf tournament, prizes for area workers and the announcement of the Industry of the Year. Trashmaster’s Classic In September, people gather to help clean up one of our area’s most treasured sites, Barren River Lake. After the shores are cleaned, fun and food follow.

Arts and Crafts on the Square On the fourth Saturday of September, the Glasgow Square comes alive with arts and crafts displays, booths, vendors and food. Roller Coaster Fair The twisting and winding Cordell Hull Highway, with sections of Kentucky 70, 90 and 63 in Barren County, is crowded on the first weekend of October with yard sales, food and events all along the route (www.rollercoasterfair. com).
