Museum Musings Loads of interesting old agriculture equipment is on display at the Tennessee Museum of Early Farm Life. The museum is located behind Rippavilla Mansion in Spring Hill, and the hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. ThursdaySaturday. The 500 artifacts are on display inside two salvaged barns, one of which is made of American chestnut wood that is rare these days. Meanwhile, Mount Pleasant is home to the Mount Pleasant/Maury Museum of Local History. It houses Civil War relics, phosphate history, fossils and special monthly exhibits.
Spelunkers Welcome One of the largest caves in Tennessee is in Culleoka. The Southport Saltpeter Cave has kept its wild reputation over the years, and anyone wanting to explore it should be physically fit. It features unusual formations and large caverns that date back an estimated 300,000 years. Today it is open only by appointment for guided and unguided tours. During the Civil War, the cave was mined for nitrate – used to make gunpowder – and it also housed Confederate troops in hiding.

Not Just for Bathtubs Little rubber ducks by the thousands can be found in the Duck River in the fall. The Great Duck River Duck Race is an annual fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club of Maury County. Participants “adopt” a yellow rubber duck for $5, and more than 7,000 of the plastic toys are dumped into the Duck River. They float to the finish line at Riverside Bridge‚ and prizes are awarded to people who adopt the top 25 finishing ducks. The 2008 event will be a highlight of the Southern Fried Festival, planned for September.

Girls learning calculus in the 1800s? It was unheard of back then, except at the Columbia Athenaeum that flourished from 1852 to 1904. The girls-only school taught young women everything that welleducated young men would have learned at that time, including world history, physics, calculus and English literature. The rectory at the Athenaeum is all that stands of the campus today, and the building is admired for its Moorish Gothic architecture. The site hosts an annual week where young girls dress in 1861 period costumes and take classes that would have been offered when the Athenaeum was in full operation.
Plenty of Clanging Here comes the train – at 5 mph. The Mid-South Live Steamers chug into Columbia at least twice each year at Maury County Park. The park has a track for the scaleddown trains to travel, with the engines powered by either steam or diesel gasoline. The small trains are comfortable to ride and can pull one to 50 passengers, depending on engine size. The engines weigh anywhere from 100 to 2,000 pounds, and Maury County Park has a ramp where trains can be unloaded from pickup trucks or small trailers.
Fast Facts Q Columbia, Mount Pleasant and Spring Hill are the main cities, but other communities in Maury County include Culleoka, Hampshire, Santa Fe, Theta, Water Valley and Williamsport. Q Mule Day has been a springtime tradition in Columbia since 1934, celebrating the area’s agricultural roots. Q In 2008, Spring Hill welcomed a huge shopping plaza called Crossings of Spring Hill, complete with a SuperTarget, Kohl’s, Cracker Barrel and Logan’s Roadhouse.
Mounting Success Maury Magic Riders was organized in February 1998 to provide a horsebackriding program for children and young adults with disabilities. A 26-acre remote tract of land on Lofton Road is where people with physical, emotional and/or mental disabilities can enjoy the outdoors. The site has a trailer for its caretaker, three open pastures, a three-sided barn for horses and hay storage, a tack room and an arena. Four horses currently reside at the Lofton Road site.
Q Dan Uggla, current starting second baseman for the Florida Marlins, is a 1998 graduate of Columbia Central High School. Q Maury County and county seat Columbia celebrated their 200th anniversaries in 2007, having both been established in 1807.

he three cities of Maury County have distinct personalities, but also share a common bond: a commitment to maintaining a sense of community. Columbia, the county seat and largest city, has a vibrant downtown with boutique shops and wonderful restaurants. Spring Hill is among the fastest-growing cities in the nation, with shopping and housing springing up rapidly. Much smaller, Mount Pleasant is cozy and filled with natural beauty. “We still have a small-town flavor,” says Columbia native and downtown resident Harvey Church. “This is a great place for people to live and work, and call home.” Historic sites such as the Athenaeum and the home of 11th U.S. President James K. Polk lend a sense of history to the downtown area. The region’s major event, Mule Day, also has a historical tie. Each April, the population swells by thousands as the community hosts the festival, with roots dating back to the 1800s. But Columbia is also looking forward. Named a Preserve America Community, this National Main Street City’s downtown has recently undergone streetscape improvements through the Garden Street Project. Church, a third-generation Columbian who walks from his downtown home to his job as Maury County president of First Farmers and Merchants Bank, is – like many residents – involved in several community groups and projects, including the Boys and Girls Club, Maury Regional Hospital Advisory Board and Columbia Main Street. “It’s a labor of

love,” Church says of citizens who serve the community. “It’s easy to be involved in a community like this one.” Spring Hill, the nation’s 14th fastestgrowing city and home of the General Motors plant, was founded in the early 1800s and in 1940 had a population of just 543. But when General Motors opened its new Spring Hill automotive facility in 1990, things rapidly began to change. Today, the population has topped 25,000 with more than 8,600 homes. Business Friendly City in 2007, Spring Hill straddles the Maury and Williamson county lines, meaning that it falls within the jurisdiction of two very progressive county governments. “This is a very energetic community,” says five-year Spring Hill resident Stacy Neisler, who opened her own law firm in Spring Hill in 2007. “We have lots of young families and young professionals who want to see the city grow and thrive. We take a lot of pride and interest in our community.” Neisler is excited about the diversity of the area, which she credits to the GM plant and the influx of other professionals moving to the area because of the Nissan headquarters in Williamson County. “With the number of young families, there is a lot of interest in parks and recreation and schools. The quality of life is very good here,” says Neisler. “This community has a great feel. It is a positive place to live.” Mount Pleasant, incorporated in 1824, is the smallest of the three, with just 5,000 residents.

“I like the small-town approach,” says resident Derek Church, a Maury County native who returned to his roots with his wife Robin after college. “We’re glad we can both be back with our families,” he says. As 2007 president of the Mount Pleasant Area Alliance (a division of the Maury County Alliance), Church is enthusiastic about his community. “It’s just like Mayberry R.F.D., with personal touch service. Everyone is trying to help their neighbor.” The Mount Pleasant Community Foundation supports education and cultural projects benefiting the community. The Kids on Stage Foundation sponsors cultural programs for the city’s young people. Walking trails and Stillhouse Hollow Falls are among the natural amenities within Mount Pleasant, which enjoyed decades as the nation’s phosphate capital. While that industry has all but disappeared, visitors can learn more about it by visiting the Mount Pleasant Phosphate Museum.
Downtown Mount Pleasant is warm and inviting, with historic buildings and quaint shops. Left: Spring Hill is one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation. Major retailers such as The Home Depot are locating here, and new housing developments such as The Laurels are attracting young families.

resh-baked bread with apple butter, and a tropical fruit salad with homemade pimento cheese sandwiches on the side. To top off the quick meal, some piping hot cherry pie for dessert. This is only a brief sampling of the menu items available to hungry customers each day at Christy’s 6th Street Restaurant & Café in downtown Columbia. The interesting eatery near the courthouse square opened in November 2006 to serve lunch every weekday, plus a Sunday brunch that occurs from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
“I have been cooking all my life – my parents had a café with Greek and Italian food influences, so I like to say that I now serve international cuisine with Southern comfort food here at Christy’s,” says owner Christy Castro. “My restaurant is a place where people can stop in after a busy weekday morning, take a break and relax for a half hour or 45 minutes with a good meal, then return to their busy schedules in the afternoon.” The restaurant can seat 120, features jazz background music and is situated in a historic building on East 6th Street.
“For the past 10 years, I have also owned and operated a thriving catering business called Heavenly Creations,” Castro says. “I love the food game.” Also in downtown Columbia are several other restaurants for diners to enjoy, including Lucille’s and Square Market & Café. Square Market offers lunch items such as panini club sandwiches, homemade tomato artichoke soup and baked salmon salad. Meanwhile, the city of Mount Pleasant is home to several existing restaurants, while a brand new one – Mount Pleasant Grill – recently opened. In Spring Hill, a

number of eateries grace the city’s landscape, including the popular Jeffrey’s Grill and The Post & Beam. “My place is kind of unusual because it is only open Friday nights and Saturday nights, as well as a Sunday brunch,” says Ray Whitlock, owner and chef at The Post & Beam. “I refer to my cooking as upscale country cuisine, with dinner menu items such as pork loin, mesquite chicken, steak, country green beans, mashed potatoes and desserts. It is a buffet-style restaurant.” Whitlock says seating at The Post & Beam is by reservation only, since there is room for only about 75 diners. “My policy is that if a customer reserves a table, that table is theirs for

They can take all the time they want.” Whitlock schedules theme dinners every other Saturday night. “We have 700 people on our e-mail list, so I send out advance e-mails asking folks if they would be interested in attending certain theme dinners,” he says. “For example, one night I featured a New Orleans dinner, one Saturday I had a French bistro dinner, while another time I scheduled a ‘last meal of the Titanic’ dinner. Those Saturday night themes always draw big crowds.”

hey may go back a couple of centuries, but there’s plenty that’s new to be found at Rippavilla Plantation and the James K. Polk Ancestral Home. The two stately properties provide an inside look at life in Maury County’s earliest days. And with the county celebrating its bicentennial throughout 2008, each is offering unique programming. If your tastes run more to the outdoors, check out the Spring Hill Battlefield, the site of a major Civil War campaign. Historians credit the Battle of Spring Hill as a major fight for control over transportation resources in Tennessee, and one that affected the war’s progress in this area. At the Polk home, which was built by the president’s father in 1816, work has begun on a newly acquired 1882 church building adjacent to the property. When finished, the building will be a much-needed new home for temporary exhibits and educational programs, says Director John Holtzapple. “In the late 1980s, we realized we needed more space for programming and exhibits,” Holtzapple says. “This church had been an office, then a business college and finally a

storage facility for a printing company. We worked out a deal, and the property came to the home in 2006. Since then, we’ve been doing basic structural work on it and raising money for a major restoration project.” The $1 million project will see the church restored to its original appearance, and has already garnered interest from the Tennessee State Museum, the White House Historical Association and the Smithsonian Institution. “When we get the building in proper museum shape, we’ll be able to host some wonderful traveling exhibits. It’s our major bicentennial project, and with this being an election year we’re also focusing on our presidential history.” Adjacent to the Polk House is the Sisters’ House, which features exhibits of Mrs. Polk’s ball gowns, jewels and other historic items from the Polk presidency. Over at Rippavilla, which was completed in 1855 by Nathaniel Cheairs, new programs for Black History Month and traveling exhibits keep things fresh. The home features many original period antiques, as well as a museum room
with items owned by the Cheairs family and a collection of Civil War artifacts. “We’re constantly working on the house itself, and then we have several events throughout the year,” says Pam Perdue, executive director. “We’ve been doing some research, increasing our knowledge about the slaves at Rippavilla, so we’re working on some tours regarding that for February [2009], which is Black History Month. We’ve found from Nathaniel Cheairs’ letters that he had a close, personal relationship with many of the slaves, and it wasn’t what some people see as the masterslave relationship. We’re trying to expand on that, as it’s an important part of the overall interpretation of the family and their life here.” Rippavilla may be best known for its corn maze, which attracts around 20,000 people every fall, but with constant research unearthing interesting information about the home and its occupants, visitors always find something new. “We interpret history every day, so every day is special to us here,” Perdue says.

A Southern Fried Festival TWO-DAY EVENT BRINGS LIVE MUSIC, GREAT FOOD AND FAMILY FUN TO COLUMBIA
I
n 1995, Columbia’s business community launched the Fall Festival, an event designed to bring people – and their pocketbooks – to downtown. After more than a decade of success, the festival’s organizers decided to shake things up a bit, starting with the name. Now known as the Southern Fried Festival, the two-day event brings in top recording talent such as The Drifters, and attendance is pushing toward 10,000 people per year. In addition to well-known entertainers, the festival also offers a recipe/ cook-off contest, dessert sampling, carnival, antique tractor show and antique trunk sale. Its reach has
expanded beyond the borders of Columbia and Maury County, with attendees from all over Middle Tennessee and beyond. As has always been the case, and as the name implies, food continues to be the big draw. For the 2008 event, set for Sept. 27-28, vendors will offer up everything from fried chicken to fried green tomatoes and fried Twinkies. Add to that the People’s Table Dessert Tasting Alley and the First United Methodist Church’s pancake breakfast, and you can see why it’s best to diet a bit before attending. After enjoying the food, take part in the new scarecrow contest, or enjoy
various Red Hat Society members as they vie for the coveted best-hat prize and participate in a kazoo parade around the square. New for the 2008 festival will be a duck race benefiting the Boys and Girls Club, says Rick Alexander, owner of Alexander’s Mattress World and chairman of the event. “We’re going over into Riverfront Park this year and expect our attendance to go up by another 2,000 or so,” Alexander says. “And with the antique show, we’re drawing in even more people. It’s really a popular festival.” For more about the festival, visit www.southernfriedfest.com.
Live music is a highlight, but food is the star of the Southern Fried Festival, which includes a popular cook-off.

Portfolio in these circumstances can be heartwrenching, but the 33 people who are working with CASA log long hours with no complaint. “The caliber of people who have stepped up to do this work is amazing,” she says. “It’s very intense, and not your typical volunteer position. We ask for 15 to 20 hours a month, and most give more than that. One couple that worked together put in 149 hours on one case, which meant that one child had that much support.” As of late 2007, CASA of Maury County had served 79 children, making recommendations ranging from returning the child to the home once the parents made some adjustments to be better caregivers, to removing the child and terminating parental rights. “Those are hard decisions, but we’ve made tremendous progress,” Boren says. “Our goal is to learn as much about the case as we can, then write recommendations to the courts based on what’s in the child’s best interest. We also make sure that when the child is in state custody, the level of services required to address his or her special needs is provided.”

The 300-acre park is a year-round beehive of activity, featuring recreational areas, walking and bike trails, mountain bike trails, campsites, a boat ramp with access to the Duck River, the Derryberry Log Cabin, picnic shelters and restrooms. Local Eagle Scouts have installed signs identifying parts of the 7.75-mile trail, which has several entry and exit points so riders can pick and choose the segments they wish to ride. Maps of the course, compliments of the Columbia Cycling Club, are located at its parking field. Less strenuous pursuits also are the order of the day at the park, which soon will feature a full-scale children’s play-
ground, says Sonjalyn Rine, recreation specialist for the county’s parks and recreation department. “The county really doesn’t have a public playground, and since this park serves that whole side of the county, it’s something we wanted to do,” Rine says. “There are many natural areas for children to play in, but we wanted to add a real play area.” Another new feature set for a 2008 opening is a remote-control auto track, which will capitalize on the plane field’s success. Ongoing maintenance of the trails, as well as the cabin, ensures that the park’s users find a friendly, welltended facility, Rine says. “The cabin just stays full in the warm weather, and we’re working on winterizing it,” she says. “We have lots of weddings and bridal showers there, and it’s also home to the Duck River Tellers, a storytelling group here in Maury County.”

ity the poor mule. An also-ran in the looks department, never the focus of showy events like the Kentucky Derby, always relegated to hard work and little fanfare. But this noble animal isn’t without its admirers, and Columbia, the “Mule Capital of the World,” honors this sturdy beast on Mule Day each spring. Begun in the early 1800s, it developed from an annual livestock show and was supplemented in 1934 with the Mule Day Parade. The annual Mule Day celebration now stretches over four days in April and draws around 300,000 visitors to the city. In addition to the parade, there’s traditional Southern food, dancing, entertainment and crafts. Like all successful events, Mule Day has drawn its share of imitators: Benson, N.C., Calvary, Ga., Ider and Winfield, Ala., and Bishop, Calif., now have their own events. In 2006, the government got in on the act, listing the Mule Day Parade in the National Asset Database, a Department of Homeland Security list of terrorism targets. (So far, to anyone’s knowledge, no mulerelated plots have been discovered.) The almost weeklong event hasn’t forgotten its namesake, with events honoring everything from working mules to best of breed, plus other livestock displays and contests recalling the event’s livestock-show foundation. The event’s popularity is good news for Columbia and Maury County merchants as well. Current estimates indicate that the event brings some $15 million in festival-related spending to the county’s coffers. And with Maury County celebrating its bicentennial in 2008, both the history of the event and the area itself will be the focus of much celebration. Information about the annual Mule Day event is available at the festival’s Web site, www.muleday.com.
Mule Day has been a springtime tradition in Columbia since 1840.

By that time he and his wife had begun a family, so he got involved in a host of school- and community-related activities. “I was involved with the Highland Park Elementary School PTA, and then got involved in Big Brothers Big Sisters, helped form the Knights of Columbus at St. Catherine Catholic Church, joined the Rotary Club and have been involved with the Harvest Share Food Pantry,” he says.
Add to that list the March of Dimes, American Red Cross and a list of other community organizations, and it’s easy to see why Konz is as well known, and as well liked, as he is. For his part, he says he just wants to give back. “This has been a great place to be for us,” he says after returning from donating his 183rd pint of blood to the American Red Cross. “I like the job I have now and tell people that if you’re going to be a tax collector, you might as well do it with a smile.” – Stories by Joe Morris

o there you are, sitting at a Rotary Club luncheon or other civic event, and a beaming man heads toward you with an envelope in his hand. It’s not the most orthodox way of delivering tax bills, but it’s worked for Steve Konz, Maury County trustee since 1990. Konz, who is serving his fifth term as trustee, takes a personal, and friendly, approach to a job that most people would identify as being somewhere between politician and undertaker on the popularity scale. The Minnesota native, who also served as a county commissioner in the 1980s and has called Middle Tennessee home since the early 1970s, says that good service and a positive attitude make the job less, well, taxing. “I’d like to give everybody a discount, but then we’d have to raise their taxes when they weren’t looking,” he says. “But people know it’s coming, so I try to make it as enjoyable as I can.” After a stint in the U.S. Air Force, which took him to the Philippines, Konz decided he liked warm weather and headed for Tennessee. Retooled SPRING HILL’S GM PLANT EMPLOYEES RETURN TO PRODUCE CHEVROLET TRAVERSE
STORY BY BETSY WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIAN McCORD
A
s General Motors marks a century of operations in September 2008, adding to the celebration will be the launch of the new Chevrolet Traverse, now being manufactured at the company’s Spring Hill facility. That’s good news for Maury County. The company announced a 2007 layoff of approximately 2,400 of Spring Hill’s 3,981 employees for plant retooling so the processes could move from the plastics-based Saturn vehicles to the heavy metal required for the new crossover Traverse. During that period, the laid-off employees continued to collect more than 80 percent of their salary. “The construction and downtime at the plant was necessary to sustain our long-term viability in Spring Hill,” says Harvey Thomas, site manager for GM Spring Hill Manufacturing. “I truly appreciate the support of the local community throughout our conversion period. We’re excited to have our employees return to work at GM Spring Hill Manufacturing during the first quarter of 2008. There’s a lot of training and hard work yet to come as we prepare for the newest addition to the GM portfolio – the Chevrolet Traverse – due out in late 2008, but I’m confident our team will deliver a fantastic product.” Thomas’ confidence in his Spring Hill team is well deserved. During the past five years, the plant has earned numerous awards, including the 2007 Harbour Report Most Productive Engine Plant and the 2007 Chairman’s Honors Award.
The retooling also means that the Spring Hill plant features one of the most flexible manufacturing processes in the industry, able to produce practically any GM car, truck or SUV, depending upon the market. During the course of the facility’s decommissioning project, more than 22,000 tons of scrap metal were recycled. “We continue to maintain wildlife habitat certification, as well as Tennessee Pollution Prevention Partnership Performer status,” says GM communications specialist Kate Neary. The plant has not been idle during the conversion period, as the powertrain facility has remained operational, employing 400 workers and producing the 2.4 L and 2.0 L Turbo Ecotec engines. These engines are supplied to five GM plants. In addition, the service parts warehouse has continued regular operations, supplying parts to more than 400 Saturn retailers. With a $450 million annual payroll, the plant obviously has a huge economic impact on Maury County. According to Neary, almost 50 percent of the current employee base resides in the county. The Spring Hill facility features four plants and covers 6.86 million square feet, which includes the latest addition of a new ecoat-phosphate area in the paint shop. It sits on 2,450 acres, 1,200 of which were farmed in 2007 to produce corn, winter wheat and soybeans. Since it began operations on July 30, 1990, Spring Hill employees have built almost 3.8 million vehicles.

MARKETING MUSIC CITY Kevin Kilburn moved his printing, marketing and graphic design business, Printertainment, to Maury County in order to be close to the city while maintaining the pace and close relationships available in a small town. “We love Maury County,” Kilburn says. “We love Mount Pleasant. It is such a charming place. The people are amazing, and we’ve all found out how great it is to live in a small town that gives you all the best things about a big city, too.” Printertainment specializes in compact disc duplicating and design work. “I was heavily involved in the music industry and saw the need for more upscale design,” Kilburn says. “So, we do work for Nashville labels.” The firm’s primary client is Community Concert Association, a national concert series promoter. 30

“We design and print everything from their tickets to brochures and programs,” Kilburn says. Printertainment recently installed a four-color press with hopes of securing more local business. FULL-SERVICE DESIGN Next time you stop for a free sample in a major retail chain, take a look at the display kiosk. Chances are a Maury County company made it. SoftSpace South, a family-owned business that began as Jade Industries in Portland, Ore., in 1998, came to Maury County in 2006. The company is located in a 20,000-square-foot facility in the Maury County Industrial Park. “We manufacture custom trade show booths, counters and kiosks,” says owner Gloria Clark. SoftSpace is a full-service design and fabrication company servicing the trade-
show, event marketing, retail and architectural industries. As a wholesaler, SoftSpace supplies display houses that, in turn, sell to the end user. The decision to move to Maury County was an easy one. “Our top five clients are located from North Carolina south, so this was a logical move for us.” SoftSpace also caters to local clients with their exterior sign business. They have the only CNC Roll Bender used to roll steel or aluminum in Tennessee. FLYING HIGH, SAFELY Experimental Design and Analysis Solutions, a software and analysis company in Spring Hill, shares responsibility for keeping us all safer when we fly. “We provide tools and services to streamline the process for testing turbine engines for high-cycle fatigue,” says Kurt Nichol, president and CEO. “Our customers are companies that M AU R Y C O U N T Y
make jet engines, and also government testing facilities.” Nichol and his partner met at Arnold Air Force Base in Tullahoma, Tenn., and the EDAS was founded in 2000 in Brentwood. However, the firm quickly outgrew that space and began looking for a new location. “We expanded our search radius to include Spring Hill and found exactly what we were looking for here,” says Nichol. “We really like this area.” In April 2008, EDAS relocated to Spring Hill. LEADERS IN THEIR FIELD Diabetics and others with blood sugar issues are likely familiar with studies in recent years regarding the positive effects of water-soluble cinnamon extract on blood sugar levels. A Maury County company is at the forefront of that research and much more in terms of health-related products. Integrity Nutraceuticals International is a raw material supplier of bulk nutraceuticals, importing the finest materials from China and India. The company stocks amino acids, Cinnulin PF®, joint and health care items and more. “The mission of Integrity is to honor God and serve others while providing innovative, science-based, quality-tested nutraceutical ingredients that enhance health and well-being,” says Tim Romero, company president. Located in Spring Hill, Integrity was founded in 2000 and has grown to 30 employees, with most of the growth occurring in the last three years. “We moved into our 39,000-squarefoot facility in Spring Hill in September 2007 and anticipate filling the remaining 55,000 square feet within the next 10 years,” says Romero. “We’re excited to be in Maury County, and we look forward to contributing to the growth of the area.” NEW SPACE, NEW SERVICES Middle Tennessee Bone and Joint Clinic in Columbia was founded more than 30 years ago and today employs eight physicians specializing in orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation. “I believe it’s harder to be a good doctor in a small town rather than a city,” says CEO Randy Wilmore. “These guys are all involved in their community. They go to church, coach ball teams, and M AU R Y C O U N T Y
their patients are also their neighbors. It’s a challenge and an opportunity.” In January 2008, the physicians group doubled its space to 30,000 square feet by moving to a new facility on James Campbell Boulevard. They also enhanced their services. “We changed to digital radiology, which lowers the dose of radiation patients receive,” says Wilmore. “We are the only ortho practice to own an eightchannel MRI in the state of Tennessee.” MTBJ offers a therapy pool with a built-in treadmill, allowing some patients to transition to better health much earlier. – Stories by Nancy McCrary

Pulling Everything Together ALLIANCE WORKS TO KEEP MULTIPLE PARTNERS’ EYES ON COMMON GOALS
W
hen it was formed in 1999, the Maury Alliance had one major goal: Get all of the county’s major players on the same page. Eight years later, it’s done that – and more. “It was really the marrying of our economic development function and our chamber of commerce function, and we also brought in local government, education and the private sector under one umbrella to work through issues and take a leadership role in the community,” says Brian Williams, chairman of the alliance’s board of directors and senior executive of commercial banking at First Farmers and Merchants Bank in Columbia. With everyone at the same table, the thinking went, it would be simpler to focus on major issues of importance to the county: new job creation, quality-of-life issues, good schools, workforce development and business retention. “We’re able to facilitate discussions among all these parties, and that’s helped us in everything from public affairs to economic development,” Williams says. “Maury County is changing, and it’s been changing for 20 years. We’re seeing huge development coming this way, along with huge potential. We’re working now on putting things into place to attract that growth, but also ensuring that the quality of life that has always attracted individuals to Maury County, to raise families here and retire here, to remain.” Whether it’s following state or national legislation, working

on school improvements or putting together an incentives package for a potential new business, the alliance’s ability to speak for the county and its municipalities has been instrumental in its growth, adds Frank Tamberrino, president. “We’ve been able to bring the public and private sectors together monthly, or even more frequently, to look at the economic base and economic outlook of the county,” Tamberrino says. “In 1999 there were two chambers, an economic development commission and other groups, and when you’re talking about a county with 75,000 people it makes a lot more sense to have everybody pool their resources and talents.” Going forward, Tamberrino says the alliance will be tackling a series of goals, both external and internal, that are designed to help it continue to act as the chief marketer and recruiter for Maury County. “We have to work from that perspective, to get our name out,” he says. “That may be in the Nashville community, or beyond to the state and working with our partners there. The expectation is for us to be a leader in setting some of the county’s economic agenda, and that may be recruiting new business and industry, working with our existing ones, supporting the workforce development coalition or addressing business climate issues in the cities and county. There’s a whole range of activities that we’re involved in specifically geared toward making Maury County as competitive as we can.” – Joe Morris M AU R Y C O U N T Y

The bronze is a quarter-inch thick and weighs approximately 100 pounds. “This was a rush job because Columbia
State wanted to unveil the sculpture Dec. 9, 2007, and I actually picked it up from bronzing foundry on Dec. 6,” Grisham says. “I’ve been sculpting for about 35 years and took classes at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Vanderbilt University. t was March 15, 1967, when Claudia “Lady Bird” Johnson traveled to Columbia, Tenn., to officially open Columbia State Community College. Lady Bird was the wife of Lyndon B. Johnson, who was U.S. president at the time. She was invited to cut the ribbon in Columbia to open Tennessee’s firstever community college, and the event became even more exciting when the president himself surprised everyone by showing up for the occasion. Lady Bird was thanked often that day for being in attendance, and that appreciation has now been extended more than 40 years later. In December 2007, a bronze bust of Lady Bird Johnson was unveiled on campus to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Columbia State’s existence. The statue depicts the former first lady as she looked on that noteworthy day in March 1967, and it is proudly displayed inside the Pryor Administration Building. The bronze sculpture is the work of Columbia resident and former Columbia State student Jennifer Grisham. “I had done some sculptures in the past for a woman named Pat Selle, who is a friend of Columbia State,” says Grisham. “Pat talked with (then) Columbia State President Rebecca Hawkins, and they both approached me about the project. We signed a contract soon after that initial discussion.” Grisham says she immediately started collecting photographs of Lady Bird Johnson from the Internet, as well as from the library archives at Columbia State. “There also happened to be a TV special at that time on Lady Bird with some real good footage of her entire life, so I taped it and watched it about seven times to get a real feel for her facial features,” she says. Grisham began building a lightweight core of the sculpture, then molded oil-based clay over it. After the clay artwork was to her satisfaction, she transported it to a bronzing foundry near Atlanta called Inferno Art Foundry. “Bronzing is a whole separate art,” she says. “The foundry made a rubber

A Game Well Worth the Wait COLUMBIA BASEBALL TEAM WINS AMERICAN LEGION WORLD SERIES TITLE
C
olumbia Post 19 has been playing American Legion baseball since 1948, but had never won a world series title. However, that all changed in 2007. The team of young men ages 18-19 became the best American Legion baseball squad in the nation when they captured the 2007 American Legion World Series in Bartlesville, Okla. The Columbia squad defeated Eden Prairie, Minn., by the score of 11-4 in the championship game to capture their first-ever title. “Columbia Post 19 celebrates its 60th year in 2008, but we will always remember our 59th year,” says Mickey McKeel, Columbia’s head coach. “It was a thrill of a lifetime to all of the guys, and especially for a longtime coach such as myself.” The Columbia team had mild tastes of success in recent years, making it to the southeast regional tournament during each of the past five seasons. But other than in 1995, the ballclub had never made it to the World Series until it finally happened in 2007. “To qualify for the world series, we had to win the 2007 southeast tournament in Albany, Ga., and we went there really ready to play,” McKeel says. “We ultimately defeated a team from Puerto Rico in the final game, allowing us to advance to the world series.” The American Legion World Series annually features the top eight teams in the nation battling for the title. Being a final-eight team is impressive since there are approximately
M AU R Y C O U N T Y
5,700 teams who play American Legion baseball each year in the United States. “Our first world series game saw us defeat Rockport, Ind., with a walk-off home run in extra innings,” McKeel says. “The next game also found us winning with a walk-off homer against a team from Bridgeport, Conn. Two walk-off home runs in two games was an exciting way to start the tournament.” Columbia Post 19 then defeated a team from Boyertown, Penn., before losing a game to Eden Prairie. The doubleelimination tournament featured a final game between Columbia and Eden Prairie, with Post 19 bringing home the coveted trophy. Players on the Columbia title team were Scott Beasley, Chase Birdwell, Steven Dodson, Matt Fiser, Brock Glass, Wes Gobble, Chris Hale, Cory Hale, Matt Hartsfield, Jon Ivey, Holden Killen, Mark Lamm, Chris Lovett, Cody Pomeroy, Peyton Pratt and David Spare. Assisting McKeel on the coaching staff were Eddie Allred and Chris Ivey. “The winning American Legion team always gets invited to the Major League World Series, so we all attended Game 1 of the 2007 World Series between Boston and Colorado at Fenway Park,” McKeel says. “We were brought onto the field before the game, and our pictures were displayed on the scoreboard. It was really exciting stuff for a baseball team from Columbia, Tenn.” – Kevin Litwin I M AG E S M AU R Y. C O M

High-Tech, Soft Touch MAURY REGIONAL COMBINES STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY WITH COMPASSION
P
roviding the best possible care in the most compassionate manner is the hallmark of Maury Regional Hospital. “As health-care providers, the physicians and staff at Maury Regional Hospital touch the lives of families in countless ways every single day,” says hospital CEO Robert Otwell. In operation since 1953, this county-operated hospital continues to grow and add the latest in health-care technology and specialties. In 2007, the hospital expanded its diagnostic services to include a new, state-of-the-art, 64-slice Volume Computed Tomography system. The LightSpeed® VCT is the world’s first system of its kind. The hospital now offers an innovative way for its physicians to obtain the information they need to diagnose diseases and life-threatening illnesses, including cardiovascular disease, stroke and chest pain. Physicians are able to capture images of a beating heart in five heartbeats and of an organ in one second, much faster than conventional, multi-slice CT scanners. This sophisticated technology complements the hospital’s existing magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, mammography, nuclear medicine and X-ray diagnostic imaging tools. “The new VCT is just our latest advancement in the area of heart care,” Otwell says. Maury Regional’s heart center has expanded its cardiovascular labs and centralized diagnostic testing and rehabilitation, and received the national 2007 Volunteer Hospital Association Leadership Award for Clinical Excellence in Cardiac Care. A partnership with Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville has allowed the hospital to expand its cardiothoracic surgical services. “Our partnership with Vanderbilt to provide heart surgery, teamed with skilled medical and interventional cardiologists M AU R Y C O U N T Y
and state-of-the-art technology, have resulted in Maury Regional Hospital offering the residents of southern Middle Tennessee outstanding care through our heart center,” Otwell says. The process of becoming an accredited chest pain center is under way, he says, and 2008 will see the renovation of the hospital’s surgery department as well as the opening of a wound care center. The hospital completed a $10.5 million expansion of its emergency room in 2007, tripling its size and creating 32 individual treatment rooms. With more than 44,000 ER visits annually, registration procedures have been streamlined with the implementation of bedside registration technology. Of note is the hospital’s orthopedics department, which was recognized by HealthGrades in 2007 with a five-star rating – the highest possible – for hip fracture repair. The department offers a wide array of orthopedic services, from outpatient procedures to total joint replacement. The team of board-certified orthopedic surgeons on the medical staff has more than 100 years of combined experience performing orthopedic procedures. More than 1,600 babies were delivered at MRH in 2007, and new mothers could rest easy knowing that the hospital’s new eight-bed neonatal intensive care unit was well supplied and staffed in the event of an emergency. Maury Regional Hospital is a 275-bed facility with 177 physicians representing 35 specialties, employing more than 2,000 people, with a market area serving 275,000 residents. – Betsy Williams

J
anet F. Smith was born in Tennessee, attended Austin Peay State University in Clarksville for her bachelor’s and master’s degrees, then earned her doctorate from George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville. However, since that time she has spent 18 years working outside the Volunteer State – until now. Smith became the fourth president in the 42-year history of Columbia State Community College when she began serving in February 2008. She succeeded Dr. O. Rebecca Hawkins, who is now enjoying retirement. “I was born in Houston County, Tenn., and my family has wanted me to come back to Tennessee for a number of years,” Smith says. “The Columbia State position allowed me to finally return home.” Smith has worked in the community college system for almost all of her adult life. After college, her career began as an instructor of health and physical

education at Isothermal Community College in North Carolina, and she was there throughout the 1970s. Later, she returned to her home state to enroll at George Peabody to earn her doctorate in higher education administration. “After my time in Nashville, I went to work at Dyersburg State Community College in northwest Tennessee as director of extension services,” Smith says. “That was from 1983-1990, and it was a wonderful experience because it allowed me to work with several aspects of community college life that I had never experienced before. That included working with businesses to show how a community college can help with economic development.” Following eight years at Dyersburg State, Smith accepted a position as dean of academic affairs at Hopkinsville Community College in Kentucky, where she stayed from 1990-2000. Then in 2000, she became president at Rich
Mountain Community College in Arkansas, where she remained through 2007 until accepting the presidency at Columbia State. “Throughout my career, after every seven to 10 years I begin looking for new challenges,” she says. “Just about the time when I was ready for a change from Rich Mountain, the Columbia State opportunity arose with Dr. Hawkins retiring. It was perfect timing for me to try something new again.” Smith says she was familiar with Columbia State even prior to applying for the position as president. “My dissertation for my doctorate at George Peabody was on the history of Tennessee community colleges, so I’ve known about Columbia State for a long time,” she says. “I just hope that I can do as good a job in the role as president as Dr. Hawkins achieved during her time here.” – Kevin Litwin M AU R Y C O U N T Y

Save Money. Smell the Flowers. Looking for ways to save money on gas and help the environment? The EPA wants to share some smart driving tips that could give you more miles per gallon of gas and reduce air pollution. Tips like making sure your tires are properly inflated and replacing your air filter regularly. And where possible, accelerate and brake slowly. Be aware of your speed ... did you know that for every 5 miles you go over 65 mph, you’re spending about 20 cents more per gallon of gas? If you’re shopping for a new car, choose the cleanest, most efficient vehicle that meets your needs. If we each adopt just one of these tips, we’d get more miles for our money and it would be a little easier to smell the flowers. For more tips and to compare cleaner, more efficient vehicles, visit
www.epa.gov/greenvehicles.
