Profile: My name is Joshua Norbury, and I’m a second year Graphic & Communication Design Student at the University of Leeds and am currently looking for a position within a design agency for a ‘Year in Industry’. As part of our degree, the University offers students the chance to undertake a years worth of employment, work experience or work placements within the fields of art, design and advertising. In order to take part in this, students must find themselves at least nine months of work, be it at one or a number of agencies and the work must be related to their course. This is obviously what I hope you can help me with. Here is what I would like to offer you in return: I see myself as a creative, hard working and dependable person, always willing to learn in order to develop my talents and skills for a subject I am so passionate about. I believe that I can offer a real drive and level of enthusiasm and originality to anybody, whatever the task I am entrusted with. Even though I have little previous experience in the industry, I have tried to demonstrate my commitment and love for design in my portfolio, which consists of both real world and University set work, examples of which can be seen on my website at www.jnorbs.co.uk. I am simply looking for the opportunity to prove myself and demonstrate my abilities for the subject. __________________________________________________________________________________________

Design History: Education

Having studied Fine Art, Graphic Design and Media Studies at college, I began studying for my degree in Graphic & Communication Design at Leeds in September 2007. After completing two years of the course at a 2:1 level, my work has moved on considerably and I have been able to add a number of pieces to my portfolio that I am very proud of.

Personal Projects and Real Briefs Outside of University work, I have created promotional material for the Carex Healthy Habit Campaign, as well as storyboard new television advertisements aimed at parents and children. I recently submitted my response to a second year University brief for the D & AD 2009 Student Awards, and was awarded a place in the 2009 Online annual for my animation on Black Holes.

Employment History: Ted Baker ‘No Ordinary Designer Label Ltd’ –Manchester – November ’06 to August ‘07 Stockroom Assistant – full time Ted Baker ‘No Ordinary Designer Label Ltd’ – Leeds – May ‘08 to July ‘09 Sales Assistant – part time In 2006 I worked as a full time sales and stockroom assistant for the Ted Baker Designer Label in Manchester, as a way of raising funds for my following year in University. I was until recently working for them on a part time basis in Leeds. The experience has awarded me skills in time management, public relations and communication, teamwork and multi tasking due to the level of responsibilities I undertook. I have also done some free-lance design work for one of the company’s annual promotional events in 2007. __________________________________________________________________________________________

Skills and Interests: Thanks to my degree I am now an avid user of industry standard software such as Adobes Creative Suite and Premier, and am currently being trained in the use of Final Cut Pro and Adobe After Effects for use in multimedia production. In my previous year studying graphic design, I have worked a number of times with other students successfully completing work for a number of briefs. I also regularly work with a team of 15 people at my part time job at Ted Baker. I have a keen interest in advertising and graphic design publications outside of my degree, as well as film and television production. I regularly enjoy socializing with friends in and out of University, and like to maintain a good level of fitness and exercise by attending the gym on a regular basis. Last summer I organized and undertook a four-week trip around Europe with a friend of mine. I had to effectively plan routes and arrange accommodation under time restrictions on a regular basis, as well as effective budgeting. __________________________________________________________________________________________
