KAREN HOE OBE A Force for Positive Change in the UK Disability Sector Karen Hoe, Business Hive member and a freelance specialist consultant in the UK disability sector, is the type of person who meets challenges head-on. Through her work with charities such as Sky Badger, Muscular Dystrophy UK, National Network of Parent Carer Forums and Contact, she provides valuable support and guidance, delivers various workshops, and advocates for young people and special needs families. She’s also the voice of help and advice when families are in need and helps them to come to terms with the frustrations and limitations of the system to find the right solutions.

disabilities, special educational needs and mental health problems. I do sixty hours per month on their help desk and handle various cases in the evenings.

Karen was recognised for her hard work and outstanding contribution to the care sector when she was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in June 2018 for her services to Children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

Additionally, I run the Yorkshire and Humberside branch of the charity Contact, a family charity which focuses on supporting those with Special Educational Needs. I spend a lot of time delivering workshops. I also work on the Parent-Carer Forum reporting into the Department of Education and NHS England.

We sat down with Karen to find out how she juggles the complex needs of her family and working life, how it felt to be presented an OBE by HRH Duke of Cambridge, what is the most challenging aspect of her job and much more. Your work with special needs families, carers, charities and organisations in the care sector must keep you super-busy. How do you juggle it all? As a freelance self-employed consultant, I can manage my own time and work projects around the needs of my family and the needs of the various charities that I work with.

I also work three days per week working with Muscular Dystrophy UK. I split my time between working from home and travelling to London. My main focus at the moment is on the Changing Places Project which provides adult changing rooms for people with complex health needs. There aren’t many of these in the UK.

I also have two children who keep me very busy. One of my children, Max is a permanent wheelchair user and has complex health needs including autism. Max is part of the reason I became involved with all these charities in the first place, experiencing first-hand the frustrations a parent can go through to get the care that is needed.

I manage my own diary so I really do have to be on the ball. However, I couldn’t do any of this without the support and carers I have for My work is very varied, and no two days are the Max. I am indebted to them. same, which certainly keeps me on my toes! “I was notified in May 2018 about the OBE but I couldn’t tell anyone about it for six weeks until the announcements came out on 9th June. It was a relief to finally tell people. “

It’s always difficult when it comes to meeting parents in crisis, working to reassure them and help them with their frustrations to find solutions. We arm them with the skills they need to navigate the bureaucracy and overcome the various hurdles to help their children receive the help they need. What gives you the greatest satisfaction in your work? Getting the right results for the child and the parents is what gives me the greatest satisfaction. It’s also rewarding to see how empowered the parents feel, to hear their success stories and to be able to be their mentor throughout their journey. How did you feel when you were told that you were going to receive an OBE for your outstanding contribution? I was totally shocked and of course, delighted. I couldn’t believe it, and to tell you the truth, it still hasn’t sunk in. I was notified in May 2018 about the OBE but I couldn’t tell anyone about it for six weeks until the announcements came out on 9th June. It was a relief to finally tell people.

I’d been suffering with various health issues last year and I was at a particularly low ebb, still recovering from surgery when the postman delivered the Royal letter from the palace. The

postman was a bit nonplussed about seeing all the Royal emblems on the letter and then seeing the state I was in, but it certainly gave me a boost despite my complete bewilderment. I still don’t know who nominated me, but I suspect certain parties. I’m certainly humbled by the time they’ve taken to put me forward for the award. What was it like being at Buckingham Palace and meeting HRH Duke of Cambridge? Are you able to divulge what you spoke about? It was an amazing experience. There’s a lot of ceremony and pomp and circumstance to the whole day and understandably, you’re trained on what to do when you’re in the palace. There’s actually quite a lot of humour that takes place behind the scenes, especially with the beefeaters training you on how to bow and curtsy, what to expect and how you should behave! The protocol is that you’re not allowed to speak to royalty unless they speak to you first, so it does become a bit nerve racking. Whilst we were waiting, I was embarrassed to see that some feathers had fallen off my dress. I was told to put them into a particular vase that was full of the various items that have fallen off people’s garments over the years, so I’ve been able to add to a bit of history! It was when the medal was finally pinned on

that I had the chance to talk to HRH Duke of Cambridge. We spoke for about five or ten minutes about what I do and parenting. The Duke divulged that parenting is one of the hardest things that he has ever done with things being total bedlam at times. I can certainly relate to that. After the event, the beefeaters present score cards on how well you did your bow or curtsy and there are various photos taken in the courtyard afterwards to commemorate the day.

sector, and it was a pleasure to speak to her about her work, hopes for the future and the experience of receiving her OBE. We look forward to seeing what her upcoming projects bring and catching-up with her at future Business Hive events. Karen Hoe - To contact Karen, email karen. hoe@outlook.com

I was there with my friends and family but ironically, my son, Max couldn’t attend because of the lack of changing room facilities at the palace. This is a point that I’m now working on addressing. We understand that disability access at the palace is not what it should be and that you may be getting involved in helping to remedy this. What can you tell us? Whilst there are disabled toilets at the palace, there are no changing rooms for adults or children for very complex health care needs who require such facilities. This was part of the conversation I had with the Duke of Cambridge and it’s something that I’m now working with the various officials at the palace to make happen. We're very proud to have you as a Business Hive member. How long have you been in the Hive and how do you feel that you've benefited? The Business Hive is a fantastic resource to run workshops, connect with businesses and organisations and build an online community. I’ve been a member for five years and I’ve found the support to be exceptional and I couldn’t have got to where I am today if it wasn’t for this platform. I’ve built many wonderful relationships and work partnerships through the Hive; I use their facilities and rooms for delivering workshops and I love networking over food and wine at First Tuesday events. What's next for you, Karen? Projects tend to find me because of my notoriety. I mean this in a good way! My latest role is as National Development Manager for the Changing Places Project. I’m helping to develop a national campaign for better public-accessible toilets for the thousands of people whole can’t access a toilet when they go out. I look forward to seeing changes across the country and in Buckingham Palace too. Karen is an inspirational figure in the UK charity

questio Rachel Linstead Firecracker - UK Limited

How long have you been a part of the nutrition industry, and how did you get involved?

What was your dream job as a child?

I’ve been a fully qualified nutritionist for over 10 years however I’ve been involved in the food industry for over 20 years. I’ve always been fascinated by the human body. When I worked in the food industry, I started to see how food affected health and wellbeing so this was the trigger I needed to study nutrition.

To be a professional footballer with Newcastle United.

Who inspires you in business? Too many to name, I tend to be inspired by people who have fought against the odds to achieve success be this in the business world or other walks of life such as explorers to sports people. As well as people who don’t follow the ‘normal’ path of life, the rule breakers and game changers! When you were a child, what was your dream job? I wanted to be a zoologist - in fact I still do! What is your go-to meal when you need to be focused and motivated, and why?

7

Richard Smith Lincolnshire Aquapark

It tends to be a salad with lots of different colour vegetables (mixed peppers, beetroot, carrot, tomato, radish, cucumber & rocket/ watercress & baby spinach leaves), some oily fish such as smoked mackerel/salmon or fresh tuna for protein and a couple of oat cakes as carbohydrates. I make my own dressing of Lincolnshire rapeseed oil, lemon juice & seasoning and would usually sprinkle some mixed toasted seeds on top too for some more crunch! I choose this go-to meal as it’s filling yet not too heavy! The protein keeps me fuller for longer and with it being an oily fish it aids brain function, the rainbow of vegetables gives me vitamins, minerals and antioxidants which helps all the other elements of the meal to do their jobs effectively in the body.

What’s the one piece of advice you would offer to anyone starting up in business? Be very careful who you take advice from and don’t go it alone thinking you know best. Certain seasoned campaigners in business will know you’re green, offer you all kinds of great deals and try to exploit any naivety to get your business. Speak to the Business Hive for suppliers, best practice, business plans, etc. Do you have a favourite business book? ‘Winners and How They Succeed’ by Alistair Campbell. Or ‘Winning’ by Alex Ferguson is great for management physiology techniques both relevant at small businesses level! If you could invite anyone to your Aquapark, who would it be and why? Either Donald Trump or Mike Ashley so I could let them use my special lead lifejacket!

ons with... Samantha White My Credit Controllers

What inspired you to start your own business? After working in various sectors as a Financial Controller I realised that not many companies, especially the smaller ones, were doing credit control, and this was having an impact on their cashflow.

Melanie Smith CIP Hamilton Mayday

Who inspires you in business? I have always been very individualist and don’t have one person that I use as a role model. I am always inspired by those that create their own success stories and push themselves to be the best of what they can be.

I decided to set up a business helping people do something that I really like doing and am passionate about.

When you were a child, what was your dream job?

What was your first job?

As a young child I wanted to be a PA for a big company, I guess I had images of wearing heels getting dressed up and calling it work.

YTS trainee for Mothercare! Do you have a favourite business book? The E Myth Revisited by Michael E Gerber What’s the one thing you couldn’t live without? My French bulldog puppy, Wilson

Unfortunately, I was refused the subjects I required at options and never went to college. And what was your first job? I started my first job employed at a factory packing bacon aged 16 and within 2 years was promoted to a QA. What’s your one key piece of advice for business people looking to recruit new staff? Don’t interview as a tick box exercise, so many skills are transferrable. Product knowledge, systems and processes can be trained.

Why all businesses need a copywriter Ever thought about working with a copywriter?

First, let me tell you what a copywriter does. It has Image - Spencer Slater nothing to do with registering stuff with the patent office. That’s copyright – it’s amazing how many times I gest asked about copyright law and I always smile and explain that’s not really what I do! A copywriter creates text, called “copy,” for ads, websites, direct mail, sales brochures, blogs and so on. Almost every piece of advertising or sales material you see on television or read in a magazine or newspaper was written by a professional copywriter. OK, so a copywriter writes the copy for ads and sales brochures … why can’t I do that? Before you or your company dive in to writing your own marketing material, think about these

reasons you probably should hire a professional: • You don’t have time • If you’re good at what you do, do it, and let someone who’s good at copywriting do that for you. You’ve got enough to do with your own job, and you’ll be more productive and effective if you focus on that. • Copywriting isn’t just writing • Copywriting isn’t just having a command of the English language and putting grammatical sentences together. Copywriting is drafting compelling copy that gets people’s attention, distilling product features into benefits people care about, and knowing your audience and company well enough to create the tone, voice and message that achieves your goals. Which leads me to … • Copywriting is a studied skill • Copywriters keep up on industry and advertising trends, new technology, and changes in the customer base to

keep writing effective, sales-driving copy. They continually hone their writing skills so they can write copy that will make you money. Like playing an instrument, writing effective pieces takes practice and effort. • Good copy can increase your returns A good copywriter offers an outside perspective. You know your product/ service better than anyone else, but a copywriter will look at your product/ service with no prior knowledge. That’s a good thing. One of the most common mistakes I see in marketing is when the people tasked with doing the writing are too close to the product. When that happens, the copy often doesn’t communicate the real benefit to the customer because it has been written from the point of view of the seller, not the buyer. A copywriter can take that internal jargon and translate it into real benefits to your customers. The bottom line is that good copywriters are experts in using words to get you more business!

Every business has a story to tell. Let me tell yours...

Why home boarding?

Our team are here to give your dog the same holiday experience you would expect yourself. Knowing you were about to have a holiday of a lifetime!

Think about when on holiday, your relaxing, most likely sun bathing, strolling along the beach drinking sangria? You wouldn’t enjoy the thought of your dog being locked in a kennel? This is why we offer a warm cosy house, a safe welcoming garden, endless walks and a huge number of cuddles. This allows your dog to have a holiday just like you, giving you a peace of mind knowing they are having just as much fun as you.

How did we start the franchise? And why? We started out being carers through Holidays4dogs ourselves, having done this for four years we realised that we wanted to get further involved with the company. A few months down the line we started growing our team in the Doncaster/Rotherham area and before we knew it we had 13 carers. It’s very rewarding seeing how people’s lives are made complete through caring for dogs.

Contact us here for your local area or call us on 0800 2300 266 (free from any landline or mobile) or 01430 860552

Who would be an ideal carer? When we look for our carers, we look for people who are in ore of being in the company of dogs, we strive to find carers who would give that dog the same love, attention and affection dogs really deserve. It could be someone that has had their own dog in the past but cannot deal with losing them again. It may be someone who has their own dog and feels that another dog would be great company to have or simply just someone who loves caring for dogs in their own house.

Your business bubble By Gavin Boden - Retail Expert

Have you been in your business for more than a year, five years or 30 years??? Isn’t it time you stepped outside and have a look at what your clients can see? You have been running your business now for sometime, making great business decisions, employing the right staff, growth has been steady and you go home every night with a deserving warm feeling in your stomach. Have you ever thought of stepping outside your “bubble” however big or small it is to see what other people can see, your staff, your clients or your suppliers? Sometimes when you are so focussed with the everyday running of the business, you can miss the things that are staring you in the face. I have a customer who I have been visiting for over 10 years and I remember the first time I went noticing an empty bucket just inside the doorway, the weather was good and there was no real reason why it was there. Of course I never mentioned it, and every time I visited in the next 2 years I noticed the bucket. By this time I had built a relationship with him and asked him to come down to the front of the shop with me, we went out of the store turned round and I said to him “why the bucket?”. He replied “what bucket?”, he honestly couldn’t see it until I pointed it out to him. He explained that about 4 years ago they had a leak and it took the roofer a few days to come out and fix it, but nobody had moved the bucket. After a few more days it became invisible to him and had sat there for 4 years. I asked him how many “buckets” did he have, I said as an outsider I would have a look around his offices, his warehouse, his store and have a look into his business from an outsiders point of view to see what had become bad habits within it. I found a multitude of sins, which after implementing the changes saved him thousands of pounds and improved his turnover. This included 30,000 worth of stock in the warehouse which had been just sat there and an advert in the local press which was more than 3 years old, and desperately needed updating. Sometimes its good to step outside your bubble and look inside to see what you can see. What will you find? To contact Gavin, email gavboden@gmail.com

Who do you surround yourself with? Column by Alexis PowellHoward, MD at Fortis Therapy & Training

Surrounding yourself with the ‘right’ people is important, not just in business but in life too. As social animals who need relationships, we learn about ourselves, and can be conditioned by our interactions with family, friends, colleagues and peers and by the organisations we work in. Considering how each of us is shaped by our relationships and the experiences we have, if applied to the workplace, can enable us to understand the culture of the organisation and the dynamics there. If you are leading a team or an organisation, or you are a sole trader, having the right support network around you, both personally and professionally can make all the difference in supporting you on your mission, helping you to be better at what you do and thereby improving you and the business you are developing. Reviewing your relationships, as you would your business, can help you to understand their influences on you – who can you help? who do you feel obligated to spend time with? who helps you to be better? who detracts from you and tires you? who helps you to feel motivated and creative? who could you spend less time with and who would you like to spend more time with? who do you learn from? what do you offer in those relationships? who helps you to take calculated risks? And finally, what changes would you like to make and who else you would like in your support network?

He has been volunteering for 2 years at YMCA Humber mainly as a member of the charity’s Community Orchard Team; he has also been happy to lend a hand in painting and decorating accommodation rooms with the maintenance staff. Conor is extremely happy to have received the award, being presented it at an official ceremony by The Mayor of North East Lincolnshire. Conor Said: “I was beside myself, absolutely ecstatic. It was such a surreal feeling to finish it, I still can’t believe it, it still feels like there must be more to do.” Alan Burley, YMCA Humber’s Volunteer Coordinator said: “I was delighted to support Conor on his special night, we are all delighted that he was able to complete the voluntary elements of his award with us.” Conor still volunteers with YMCA Humber to this day, here is an interview with him about his volunteering experience on the the charity’s environmental projects. 5 things KnapChat has taught us about building better relationships Since the turn of the year, we’ve been speaking to fascinating people doing extraordinary things over on our KnapChat blog. From a charity founder with a poignant story to an award-winning stand-up comedian, our weekly interviews are centred on one thing: building relationships. Here are five common themes we’ve found across them all... Be Authentic Whether it’s sports marketer James Gordon explaining how minority sports engage fans through validity and transparency or The Raw Mum, aka Sabha Comerford, accounting her popular Instagram brand to her natural, genuinely honest content, authenticity is a common theme throughout the KnapChat series. Perseverance Success doesn’t happen overnight. We all know this and our chat with Grimsby’s very own Garry Bainbridge firmly underlines it. The yachtsman and Managing Director of Ish Fish talks about his attitude being the difference, how he’s always believed in “discipline equals freedom”, and the importance of consistency to drive things forward. Inspire One of our most powerful pieces is with Rhian Mannings, who founded bereavement support charity 2 Wish Upon A Star after losing her 1-yearold son George and husband Paul in five tragic days in February 2012 . Speaking to people like Rhian is the reason why we started the series: it’s truly inspiring the way in which she has fought back from those dark

days to a to create something that helps so many others. Building Your Audience/Advocates Another Grimbarian among our interviewees, Richard Askam is an expert in building relationships, having started the rise of personalisation for brands. Spearheading Coca-Cola’s Share a Coke campaign, Richard was able to come up with a unique idea that became a global sensation. Trust International netball umpire Louise Travis told us that “strong relationships are built on mutual respect and honesty.” Meanwhile, United Nations Resource & Partnerships Advisor Louisa Dann pinpointed sincerity and finding shared objectives as crucial ingredients for building relationships. This, of course, all revolves around trust. Join us every Tuesday as we continue our journey through these incredible stories, talking with remarkable people and learning about relationship building.

Our favourite fish

Salmon has been voted the most favourite fish to eat in the UK with almost half of people eating seafood the recommended twice a week, a survey has found.

fresh, quality fish sourced from trusted, responsible merchants to be delivered to the home in recyclable and reusable packaging.

Ish Fish, online retailers of fresh fish shipped directly from the Port of Grimsby to your door, wanted to find out more about the fish-eating habits of seafood lovers, and joined forces with digital marketing agency Knapton Wright to conduct a nationwide Facebook survey.

Garry Bainbridge, Director of Ish Fish, said: “We may still be a young business but we’re always looking to grow and expand our knowledge, so we wanted to take our top two questions and go straight to our online community for the answers. We were blown away by just how many people answered our questions, so a big thanks to everyone who took part.

Over 3,000 people took part, finding that 24% of participants loved to eat Salmon, with Sea Bass and Haddock swimming closely behind with 21% and 20%, respectively. When asked how often they ate fish, a huge 45% said they enjoyed two portions a week – the recommended amount. 36% of people surveyed eat fish once a week, with 18% eating fish three or more times. Joel Creasey, Director of Ish Fish, said: “Salmon is always a favourite fish, and Haddock and Cod are always popular, but there are a lot of people out there who love Sea Bass. Our mission at Ish Fish is to get more people eating fish, a bigger variety of fish and more portions per week, so to find that almost half of the people surveyed are eating fish twice a week is brilliant.” Last month, Grimsby-based Ish Fish celebrated its first birthday, which launched on National Fish & Chip Day 2018. Chaplaincy chatter Article by - Rev Mary Vickers, Workplace Chaplaincy Spontaneity… Live for the moment! Don’t worry about the future! Act as though it’s your last day on earth! So many people seem to encourage us to live like this. Some appear reluctant to make concrete arrangements, especially for social events, simply saying “text me” rather than fixing a time in advance. It’s almost as if ‘seizing the moment’ is the best way to act and that planning is for losers.

when they called her “A flibbertijibbet! A will-o’-the wisp! A clown!” So why is the dream of spontaneity so attractive? Why do we seem to praise ‘random acts of kindness’ more than planned acts? Is it because most of our lives are so timetabled, and we feel a bit fenced-in by automated diaries telling us where we should be, and by websites that seem to know us better than we know ourselves? Reacting to this, we dream of being able to be spontaneous – thinking that it is the epitome for freedom…. But then it gets scary, because as Jean-Paul Sartre noted, freedom is terrifying. Spontaneity seems to be a virtue that we sorely wish we lived by but, when it comes to it, we don’t actually want to act out rigorously. Perhaps Oscar Wilde was right when he said “Spontaneity is a meticulously prepared art”? I like this quote: “Spontaneity is being present in the present” (Wei Wu Wei)

But is this right? Truly embracing the culture of spontaneity would surely lead us to being unable to keep, or even to make, promises. No-one, not even ourselves, would ever know where Contact Mary on - 07730 972403 we were or were going to be – just like the accusation mary@faithatwork.info the nuns made about Maria in the ‘Sound of Music’

Grimbarians - By Dan Clarke The team behind a motivational photodocumentary project are preparing for the launch of their first exhibition. Grimbarians, a series of black-and-white portraits telling the stories of the great, fascinating, and inspirational people in and around Grimsby, will begin a three-month exhibition at the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre on 14th July 2019, entitled Grimsby Really Is More. Dan Clarke, Founder and Photographer of Grimbarians, launched the project on Facebook, Instagram and at grimbarians.co.uk in January 2018. He said: “Grimbarians was created to show all of the great things that people are doing in the area, and the feedback we’ve received has been so positive. In November, Docks Beers supported us with our first preview evenings, and now we’re excited to be working with Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre on our exhibition.” Over the past 18 months, 40 people from the area have been featured for their positive contributions to their communities in their own way, including Business Hive members Charlotte Hay of Healing Manor Hotel, Charlotte Bowen of The Culture House, Garry Bainbridge of Ish Fish, and Business Hive Managing Director Mark Webb. Each portrait is accompanied by a profile written by freelance writer and Business Hive member, Lindsay Cowie. Now, Dan and Lindsay are looking for

sponsorships, which will help the project to fulfil its potential over the next few years. Lindsay said: “We’ve been completely overwhelmed by the support we’ve received so far not only from the online community who follow the project, but also from the business community. Already we’ve welcomed E-Factor, Docks Beers, Precious Times Childcare Services and Comley Cameras as portrait sponsors, who will see their company logos displayed wherever we exhibit and publish. “With our first exhibition approaching, we’d love to speak to any Business Hive members who would like to join us in promoting the Grimbarians movement and help spread the message about our town. Dan and I have big plans for more exhibitions, local and national, as well as published books and visits to schools in the local area. Dan added: “We’re always looking out for nominations for future Grimbarians, too. People who were born here or have relocated here to make Grimsby their home and are contributing to the town in some way.” Businesses who would like to be involved with Grimbarians through sponsorships should email Dan and Lindsay at info@grimbarians.co.uk. Grimsby Really Is More runs from 14th July to 20th October 2019 at Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre.

Magnificent seven! Seven members of Tukes, NAViGO’s employment and training scheme, will complete a horticulture qualification thanks to a grant from The Gardiner Hill Foundation and support from Grimsby Garden Centre. Community Learning in Partnership (CLIP), a Lincolnshire-based training provider, is delivering the 20week Level Two Certificate in Horticulture. Members will attend classroom sessions in Market Rasen, with weekly practical sessions also taking place at the NAViGO-run Grimsby Garden Centre. Tukes provides training, support and work experience in real working environments for individuals who struggle finding work due to their mental health. Since NAViGO took on Grimsby

Garden Centre in 2015, Tukes have seen an increase in their members’ interest in horticulture after working alongside experienced garden centre staff. Tukes have found that the therapeutic properties of working outdoors in a social setting, has benefited their members mental health and physical wellbeing as well as their employment prospects. “Tukes have always been able to support members to gain recognised meaningful qualifications in their chosen field of employment,” said Maureen Potter, Senior Support Worker at Tukes. “Qualifications in horticulture have been harder to find as they didn’t meet all of our members’ needs. “We now have the perfect opportunity to support them in gaining appropriate, recognised

qualifications in this field.” The course is aimed at developing a wide range of practical and theoretical skills in plant establishment, plant propagation and soil testing. “Attending this out of area course takes our members out of their comfort zone, supports their confidence and gives a realistic opportunity to improve on their employment prospects,” continued Maureen. The Gardiner Hill Foundation have agreed to cover the costs of transportation, site visits and placements for the group. As NAViGO’s charitable arm, it aims to enrich and enhance the lives of those with mental health conditions, accepting grant applications from people seeking to re-establish themselves within the community, education or training. You’re hired Apprentice success drives growth at Mason Baggott & Garton. Before working for North Lincolnshire law firm Mason Baggott and Garton, Practice Manager Tim Bartlett was an Apprenticeship Assessor. “It’s a safe and supportive way to get proper work experience, gain new skills and qualifications. It allows a person to grow in confidence too, all the while taking their first steps on the career ladder,” says Tim. Working with training provider McArthur Dean over recent years, the firm has seen a number of trainees and apprentices progress into permanent employment upon completing their training programmes. Currently, six members of staff have entered the business via apprenticeships. The firm has recently taken on former Caistor Grammar School student Pippa Bradley who is due to start a Solicitor Apprenticeship this September through The University of Law – a route that will enable her to qualify as a solicitor in six to seven years without incurring any student debt.

Pippa comments, “The opportunity to work in an established law firm is allowing me to grow and progress my career while studying towards my Law Degree. I see it as a fantastic prospect where I am able to interact with clients and work alongside respected practitioners whilst grasping an understanding of the law I would have otherwise missed.” Mason Baggott and Garton - Call us 01724 868611

Dave says: “I believe that within every individual inside an organisation lies an “intrapreneur” – an innate desire to make things better either directly for themselves, or indirectly by making their organisation better. Our main cultural challenge is how organisations not only create an environment that supports this, but equally how they learn to live with the occasional chaos that can come with it.”

While the report makes for some gloomy reading, Coplin himself already sees signs that businesses are thinking about what they are asking of their people in terms of constant connection and responding to the constant stream of data. The key, he believes, is for leaders to move away from “coping mechanisms” that are flawed and to instead confront the issue head-on. “We talk about having too much information like it’s a problem,” he says, adding that businesses should be thinking of how they can use that information better.” Roger Trapp, Forbes To register your attendance at Business Hive Live go to www.businesshive.live
