HUMBER ROYAL PUTS CUSTOMERS FIRST AND IS AWARDED WORLDHOST® STATUS A Grimsby hotel has become the latest organisation in the UK to gain national recognition for its commitment to customer service, after being awarded WorldHost Recognised Business status. With over 20% of its staff trained to WorldHost standards, the 4-star Humber Royal Hotel has officially become a WorldHost Recognised Business and signed a commitment to delivering excellent customer service. On receiving the recognition, Teresa Penistone, General Manager said: “We are passionate about service standards and are incredibly proud to have achieved WorldHost Recognised Business status. “When our customers see the WorldHost logo displayed in our business, they’ll know that we have made a commitment to delivering an exceptional experience for them. Not only does this generate a positive buzz about the service we offer, but it helps to promote North East Lincolnshire as a friendly and welcoming tourist destination. ” The WorldHost programmes are being rolled out across the UK by performance and talent management expert, People 1st, to help businesses gain a competitive edge and position the nation as a worldclass tourist destination.
SLEEP EASY Businesses joined the local community in fundraising for young, homeless people by sleeping rough for YMCA Humber. The charity, which provides support, training and accommodation for young people facing homelessness, have announced an incredible total of around £18,000 which was raised during their annual Sleep Easy event, beating last year’s total by £11,000. Leanne Kennedy, Events and Marketing Assistant said: “The purpose of the event is to sleep rough for one night so others don’t have to. Those taking part come to Freshney Place Shopping Centre to fundraise, sleeping in cardboard and sleeping bags along with 90 other people through the night until 6am. Following connections made at the Business Hive’s networking, two North East Lincolnshire businesses, Ultimate Packaging and Humber Resource Training, participated in the event by ‘sleeping rough’ on what is, statistically, the coldest day of the year. Combined, they raised over £1200. Ian and Zak, of Humber Resource Training, said: “We’re passionate about our local community and what happens within it, and YMCA Humber are doing terrific work with raising awareness to this issue supporting those that are less fortunate to ourselves.” Jeremy Hodson from Ultimate Packaging said: “The event wasn’t supposed to put ourselves in the same situation as someone living rough, but after the lights went out, listening to the Friday night noise outside it gave me a little insight of how cold, scared and isolated people may feel when living rough this time of year. “That in itself inspired me to raise even more money for the event and to vow to myself that I would arrange a bigger team from Ultimate Packaging for the event next year, and raise even more money for YMCA Humber.” The money raised during Sleep Easy goes towards hygiene packs, counselling, like skills training and other services that the charity provides. John Manton, Contracts Manager said: “It was a fantastic event, really good turnout. It’s about raising awareness, thinking about the situation and about raising funds so we can continue the work we do, otherwise these people will be homeless.” Going forward, John wants to continue to create partnerships with businesses: “ We recognise the benefits of working in partnership with other organisations such as The Business Hive and how that can impact our services in the future, so it’s the start of something for us in terms of developing relationships. It’s great to have the Business Hive’s support.”

MARVELLOUS MCHALE WINS MAJOR ACCOLADE A BUSINESS coach who has seen his client’s businesses flourish with great results, has won a major accolade. John McHale, from Scawby, scooped the award for ActionCOACH UK Growth Awards 2018 Yorkshire and Lincolnshire Best Client Results at a ceremony in London after the businesses he coaches all wrote glowing testimonials. The award is testament to his hard work and means his clients’ results were the best in the region, as all have continued to grow over the last 12 months – many with record turnovers and record profits for their businesses.
The results are astronomical, as one Cleethorpes business, Tilletts Clothing has expanded rapidly due to John’s coaching and expertise, while another Urban Feather Design Agency, Scunthorpe, saw the owner, Kate Kerr, take three family holidays last year for the first time, because the business allowed her to do so.

BRIAN STONES, WEAVER WROOT What was your first job? My first ‘proper’ job was on a six month Youth Opportunity Program (showing my age) at a small firm of accountants called G.F. Trevor & Co. I was paid the princely sum of £25 per week and ended up staying 18 years. How long have you been in the accounting sector? By July of this year I will have been in the profession for 36 years. Do you have a favourite business book? ‘Thinking, Fast and Slow’ by Daniel Kahneman. It is not principally a ‘business’ book as such but makes you really think about everything you do, why you do it and how to try and use the ideas to improve your life, business and personal.

What’s the one piece of advice you would offer to someone starting in business? Know your aims and objectives from the very start and always keep them in mind. TARA FOULKES, ALLOQUOR What inspired you to start your own business? I realised that I no longer fit into a particular ‘employee box’ so I decided to combine all my skills and experience to make my own. I love that I work with others to teach them how to get the best out of their brain to reduce stress, lead a calmer life and reach their potential. And who inspires you in business? I recently attended an event where Chris Pointon from the #hellomynameis campaign. The work that they have achieved on their campaign through adversity is truly inspirational. When you were a child, what was your dream job? When I left school, I wanted to be a reporter for the National Geographic!
JONATHAN STONES, JOHN BARKERS SOLICITORS How long have you been in the legal sector? I joined John Barkers Solicitors in 2000. Which area of law do you practice in? John Barkers Solicitors offers legal support in most legal areas, both personal and business. I specialise in Property and Company work running the team that deals with this work. When you were a child, what was your dream job? I had a period when I wanted to be an architect, but for a number of years I wanted to be a doctor. I am pretty lucky in that I do my dream job now as a Commercial Solicitor.
What’s the one piece of advice you would offer to anyone starting in What’s the one thing you couldn’t live without? business? I suppose like a lot of people I find my I-phone invaluable to Everything takes so much longer than you expect it to take, but to me in both my business life and personal life. keep at it and you will get there. Keep your focus on what you want to achieve, as times can get hard, but to keep that focus in your mind as it will get you through. Plus, join an organisation like the Business Hive, the ongoing networking and support is brilliant and if you work alone you need that, it makes a huge difference.

DOWN TO BUSINESS FOR WHEN YOU WISH The team at When you Wish Upon A Star are getting ready for big events in their fundraising calendar with the support of the North East Lincolnshire business community. The Lincolnshire & Yorkshire branch of the charity, which makes the wishes of children living with life threatening illnesses come true, has been working with companies across the borough to host events, provide materials and fundraise. Joanne Wright, Regional Manager, said: “For several years now, for example, Sign of the Times have provided the name badges for our Santa Express trip and Pattesons Glass sponsored some small jars for favours at a fundraising Ball. We’ve been supported by Quizzes run by Handelsbanken and Forrester Boyd, and many Hive members are always very supportive of attending our events. “We are always grateful to those hospitality venues too like Waltham Kitchen, with whom we have run a few pop up events and to Masala Masters who are very supportive. Driver Hire are organising a Golf Day this year with the intention of raising enough money to sponsor 25 seats on board the Santa Express trip, and through them, some other Hive members have come forward to offer sponsorship.”
‘ELF ‘N’ SAFETY’ by Mary Vickers, Chaplain for North East Lincolnshire “Elf ‘n’ safety” at work is often joked about. We all scoff at situations like the University that stopped graduates throwing their hats in the air; and the Council that banned binmen from wearing Santa hats - but taking care of workers’ welfare and safety is important. Exact figures are hard to work out but if, in addition to workplace accidents, we add those who die from cancer and other diseases caused by exposure to things like asbestos, it’s thought that globally around 50,000 people die each year at or as a result of their work. If serious injuries, and work-related road accidents are added the figure rises to over 2 million.
We’re all familiar with Remembrance Day for those who died in combat, but relatively few people know about Workers’ Memorial Day. Services have been held in Currently, When You Wish Upon A Star is North East Lincolnshire for 16 years but looking for volunteers for a tandem 15,000ft some still see it as a new thing. Treating skydive in October, as well as fundraising partners for the annual Santa Express trip, which workers properly and fairly isn’t new. It’s very longstanding - God came up with the takes very-deserving children to see Father Christmas. idea first - so you could say that it’s not just a good idea but also a God idea! Joanne said: “The support we receive form the Business Community is vital – and there are many ways in which people can help – from taking part in a sponsored event, to donating a prize, to holding an event for us or to volunteering. We are an exceptionally small paid staff of two, and it’s only with such support that we can maximise every opportunity offered to us, allowing us to truly make a difference to those deserving children and families.”
Verses on the topic are quite common in the Bible. Similarly, the Qur’an teaches about it. But if you’re not into faith, here’s a quote from Cicero, a famous 1st century Roman lawyer: “The safety of the people shall be the highest law”. So, as they say, there’s nothing new under the sun! MENTAL HEALTH – A RISKY BUSINESS By Alexis Powell-Howard, Fortis Therapy & Training. In 2016/17 stress, depression or anxiety accounted for 40% of all work-related ill health cases and 49% of all working days lost due to ill health, with the total number of working days lost being 12.5 million days. Only 4 in 10 employees disclosed to their employer feelings or symptoms of stress or mental health difficulties - over 50% sought help outside of work. The main work factors cited in the research as causing work-related stress, depression or anxiety were workload pressures, including tight deadlines, too much responsibility and a lack of managerial support. And what about presenteeism? When a member of staff attends work when they are unwell, how is this affecting your business? Presenteeism could account for as much, if not more of a loss in productivity, than sickness absence. Personal money troubles, work-related stress and perceived pressure from managers are all contributing factors, added to this are worries about re-structures and subsequent job losses and relationships at home. If we then take in to account the culture of the organisation and the expectations of high working hours, late night emails, working on days off, missed lunch breaks, disciplinaries and a perception that employees need to be visible to be effective, it is easy to see why people breakdown over a period of time. Increasingly businesses are beginning to focus on their staff wellbeing, recognising that a workforce that feels valued and engaged increases productivity, engagement, goodwill and reduces absenteeism and presenteeism. Whether you are a self-employed entrepreneur or a national or international company, there are many ‘quick wins’, strategies, wellbeing projects and training programmes that can be implemented within your business to support people to be more effective and happier at work. Recognising the symptoms of mental health difficulties and being approachable and open to having conversations is key to providing early intervention – and also leading by example in terms of how you look after yourself!

IAN’S DRIVE TO SUCCEED WINS HIM AWARD A Grimsby agency has awarded one of its most deserving candidates by presenting its first annual Driver of the Year Award. Driver Hire Grimsby & Scunthorpe, recruitment specialists within the transport and logistics sector, has established the brand new award to celebrate the achievements and excellence of their drivers. Ian Gordon, who has been working with the agency for one year, was named the winner by Directors, Michael and Jayne O’Flynn. His prize included a personalised award plaque and a cheque for £500, along with a gift certificate for Dinner, Bed and Breakfast at the Ashbourne Hotel, North Killingholme. Jayne said: “It is a real pleasure to present Ian with our first Driver of the Year Award. Ian has worked for Driver Hire for some time now, and has excelled in meeting all aspects of our demanding criteria. It was wonderful to receive such positive feedback from our clients about Ian. We are very proud of him and the service he gives to our clients.” In order to be considered for the award, the drivers had to meet various criteria, which were set by Jayne and Michael to ensure they continue to deliver a quality, safe service. Michael added: “The criteria to win the Driver of the Year Award were purposely designed so that our drivers had to deliver high performance in ten different categories. From this, they would be scored and the person who had accumulated the highest points in all ten categories would be named the winner. On being named Driver of the Year, Ian said: “I was surprised. You never really know how well you’re doing so when I got the phone call on a Monday morning I was completely shocked when Jayne and Michael told me I’d won.”

BLOOMING SUCCESS FOR LINCOLNSHIRE BOUTIQUES The team behind Tilletts are celebrating a successful first quarter of the year thanks to the opening of a brand new HQ, award wins and a fashion brunch with TV personality Gok Wan. The womenswear clothing business, which launched in 2006, is reporting their best month for sales to date alongside reaching a milestone of 50,000 Likes on their ever-popular Facebook Page. This follows the launch of their latest Linen collection and two prestigious award wins. Tilletts was recently named Best Retailer at the Business Excellence Forum and Awards in Liverpool, beating tough competition from businesses across Europe. February saw the team celebrate their first award win of the year as Tilletts took home the top prize in the Retailer of the Year category in the Lincolnshire Media Tourism Awards. The year began by giving both of their Cleethorpes and Louth stores a complete makeover,

and by opening a custom-built office, photography studio and warehouse in Cleethorpes, known as Tilletts HQ. This new premises is a dedicated space for stock operations for the business’ increasing online customer base. Then, in March, the team was invited to showcase their clothing at the Fashion Brunch Club, a Mother’s Day event hosted by fashion expert and TV presenter, Gok Wan. Fashion retailers from across Lincolnshire were invited to
take part, offering fashion shows and style advice to the many women in attendance. Sheryl Gibson-Hill, Head of Customer Experience at Tilletts, said: “We are only five months in to 2018 and we have had such a fantastic start already, it’s difficult to imagine it getting even better but we know it will. We are surrounded by committed, hard-working individuals across the stores,
ARE YOU STRUGGLING WITH THE MARKETING OF YOUR BUSINESS? “I have no idea what I should be doing!” “How do I know if I am doing the right thing?” “I am overwhelmed by the choices and how much I need to do” These are the cries I hear over and over again from the small business owners, startups or employees who are responsible for the marketing for their business. They often don’t have the budgets to outsource to a marketing agency and, although they may have attended events or training on specific marketing tools, they are lacking the wider experience and knowledge to pull it all together. Marketing becomes a drag and the thing that stays at the bottom of their ‘things to do list’, which is never a good thing for their business. My lightbulb moment I have been working with small businesses since I set up Kinetic Marketing and Design in 2007. Over the years I have come across the same issues from small business owners, not knowing what marketing they should be doing but lacking the budget to outsource it to a marketing agency. They needed to be able to do their marketing themselves … and the idea behind the Mosquito Marketing Club started to form. I started to think about a way I could impart my knowledge and experience in a way owners could apply to their businesses. Something that was ongoing and more than one-off training sessions and could be coupled with practical 1-2-1 advice.
GOTTA LOVE THE INTERNET
By Gavin Boden - Retail Expert
Back in a computer lab on January 1st, 1983, Arpanet adopted the TCP/IP. From there, researchers began to assemble the network of networks that became the modern internet. The online world then took a more recognisable form in 1990, when computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web. From there, Yahoo was created in 1994. Amazon sold its first product online in 1995, and eBay held its first online auction. Google was founded in 1998, eBay acquired PayPal in 2002, blah blah blah … All this information is irrelevant – all you need to know is that your customers are buying from the internet, in huge volumes, right now. I’ve been in the Retail Industry since I left school (about a million years), so I know that it has always been a very traditional sector, usually behind the times and overall ignoring how technology can improve it. The internet was thought of by most as a way of buying “specialised products” (if you know what I mean). “Customers like the experience of coming into shops and having a day out”, retailers used to say.
Introducing the Mosquito Marketing Club • Monthly workshops – so you get to learn great stuff • Support of other business – it can be lonely out there so swapping ideas with other business owners can be really helpful • Lots of free stuff – such as guides, templates and videos • 1-2-1 sessions – giving you in-depth support • Closed Facebook Group – regular blogs and videos and the chance to ask questions any time • Affordable monthly fee – so you can budget and spread the cost Oh, and if you are wondering what a Mosquito has to do with all of this … it came from this quote “If you think you are too small to make a difference, spend a night in a room with a mosquito” For more information go to kineticadvertising.co.uk/ mosquito or email info@ kineticadvertising.co.uk
Back in the late Nineties the predictions for online business was being mainly ignored by most retailers. But a small proportion of the few who had computers were starting to employ web developers to build them basic websites – mainly as a display window for anyone who was searching online. Inevitably, ecommerce website software became much cheaper and much more affordable, which led to everyone being able to develop their own site without much investment. So, in the early 2000’s we saw a huge growth in Spare Room Salesmen, who built their website for pennies, sold anything and everything for ridiculously low margins and paid the manufacturer/wholesaler to deliver the product direct. This not only devalued the products, but also alienated the retailer, discouraging them from selling the same product on their shop floors. Thank goodness this has slowed down now, and there are more and more suppliers refusing to deal with retailers who don’t have a showroom or real business premises. As the more prominent internet companies were born, retailers started to take notice – but by the time they could develop their own ecommerce sites, the bigger players already had their roots well and truly planted. Now it’s commonplace for bricks-and-mortar retailers to have slick, warm and inviting ecommerce websites, from which their customers can purchase furniture from the comfort of their own homes. But let’s be serious – suppliers cannot afford to ignore companies who only deal online. The internet is here, and it isn’t going anywhere, so they need to embrace it, be clever and find a way to deal with both online and bricks-and-mortar retailers. Any suppliers who have a no-internet policy will surely fall behind and eventually disappear. I personally remember the time before mobile phones, online sales, Just Eat and Amazon, and I will confess that I loved it. I remember going out as a rep, selling furniture, coming home and faxing my orders off. Never did I then have to deal with complaints, late orders or service problems – retailers always called the office. But these days, no matter how much we hate change, we must work with online businesses, not against them. I am good friends with several very successful internet companies. Yes, they have a small showroom, but 80% of their business comes from the web. These retailers have found a niche which suits them, and they do it very well. And let’s face it, any company who wants to be serious on the internet must do it properly or face the wrath of Trustpilot or Facebook. If you start your internet business with poor feedback, you may as well put Jack back in the box and leave him there – the public are not a forgiving bunch, and bad reviews can ruin an online business overnight. In summary, get a professional to look at your business from the outside, make the changes necessary to deal with both bricks-and-mortar and ecommerce retailers, and, most of all,

ISH FISH... Two friends are set to make waves as they get ready to launch a brand new business. Joel Creasy, who owns a Fish Merchants on Grimsby Docks, and Garry Bainbridge, a business owner and a Yacht Racer, have teamed up to establish Ish Fish, a way for consumers to purchase fresh seafood online. Garry said: “We’re both a part of Grimsby’s seafood industry with our own businesses, and it’s while we were away working in Vietnam that we started talking about new ideas. We realised that buying fish online, in easy to use portion sizes with practical, re-usable boxes, isn’t as easy as it could be.” Ish Fish will offer a subscription service and sales of individual boxes, which are filled with a variety of fish sourced from businesses based on Grimsby Docks. Joel added: “We’re making it as easy as possible. You’ll be able order an individual box or place a subscription and we’ll work with trusted Merchants to select the freshest fish of the day. Our boxes are recyclable and use natural, re-usable insulated wool, and we’re working with as many local businesses as possible.” The Ish Fish website will launch on 1st June, with a database of potential customers, or ‘Ishermen’, and collaborations with local business already underway. Joel said: “We’ve had a lot of support from E-Factor, especially at the Enterprise Village where we’re based. They’ve been introducing us to other businesses and we have some exciting partnerships lined up.” Garry added: “We’re pushing our social media presence, particularly Instagram, and have received a lot of support from followers. So far the response has been great.”
JOE AND ALAN WILL BE AVAILABLE AT THE HIVE FOR ‘DROP IN ADVICE SURGERIES’ ON THE FOLLOWING DATES: 21st June 30th July 16th August Between 10am – 4pm where they will offer 30 minutes free advice on insurance requirements or questions you may have. P11
CELEBRATING A DECADE OF TALENT As East Coast Pictures heads towards its tenth anniversary, its founder is celebrating the diverse talent that has come through its doors. The video production company, based in North East Lincolnshire, was set up by Julia Thompson when she returned to the area having worked in an illustrious TV career, which has seen her work with Syco – Simon Cowell’s production company. One of those that has benefitted from the experience offered by ECP is Liam Tulloch of Grimsby who, on leaving the area, worked for Syco Entertainment before joining HRG as a Digital Production Executive. He’ll be working on productions for national brands such as Hendricks, Shell, and Aqua Fresh. He said: “I would recommend anyone who wants to get a foot in the door to start with East Coast Pictures. “It’s a great team to work with and they cover a vast range of clients to build up your technical skills on camera, editing and production.” Another ‘graduate’ is Leasha Waddingham who now works as a researcher at the Leeds based company Daisybeck Studios, where she produces events, and creates new shows for major channels. She added: ”ECP gave me the confidence to go out into the industry with a wealth of knowledge that came from the great team that let me get stuck straight in from day one.”
at East Coast Pictures, I’ve worked my way through local BBC radio and TV, spent some time with BBC Sport and am currently presenting the weather on BBC Look North as well as occasionally popping up on CBBC’s Newsround. “I have to pinch myself regularly as I’m literally living my dream and I couldn’t have done any of it without the help of Julia and my experience at East Coast Pictures.” Another ex-ECP team member is Andy Harris who has been working on Geordie Shore and two MTV shows amongst many others. Last year saw him working on Davina McCall’s The 100k Drop for Channel 4, and a successful second series of Judge Rinder’s Crime Stories for ITV where he was not only a researcher, but also Assistant Producer and Edit Producer. In the next few months Andy will be casting on a new Channel 4 series called My Embarrassing Pet, where people get help with their bad pet habits. Julia Thompson, Director of East Coast Pictures said: “ECP has grown over the years and we’ve been that springboard for local talent.
Of course one of the many talents that has passed through East Coast Pictures fold is BBC weather presenter Abbie Dewhurst.
“It’s fabulous that we’ve helped so many youngsters from the region to get jobs in the TV industry.”
Abbie said: “Since my time
Assisting Julia
with many of the productions is RTS award winner Jane Cullen, who has brought in students from York St John to gain experience and give them opportunities not normally gained. Jane is currently working on a docu-drama about Grimsby’s 1st World War minesweepers and the part they played in keeping the east coast clear of mines. The heritage lottery funded project is part of the Grimsby Lost Ships and it will be shown at an exhibition at the town’s Fishing Heritage Centre and on a prime network channel. For East Coast Pictures the future is looking bright and Julia and the team hope there’ll be other opportunities for those looking to gain hands-on experience in television.
