Beauty, Inspiration, Magic, Spellbound, Enchantment, are some of the words that come to mind when thinking about the breathtaking view from the site pictures of Geiranger. The NorthernPromontory proposed acts as a place for serenity, silence, intimacy and amazement, as it also offers a viewing platform that establishes a bonding link between the village, the natural environment and the sky. The project embraces the experience of the location and nature as it prolongs itself towards the heart of the fjord bay. The concrete slab-like promontory generates a clear dialogue between nature and man, bringing them together. The design creates a series of prepositional relations that describe the unique and overwhelming spatiality of the site. As a promontory, the building acts as a prominent mass that overlooks the water and the fjord. The rock-like external concrete look and the minimal design of the facades give the project the look of a floating slab. This minimalistic design achieves a harmonious relationship with the surrounding environment without changing drastically the village overall image and landscape. Nevertheless the building clearly distinguishes itself from the existing reality.

Brickstamp intents to raise the importance of the Tampere city recognition of genesis between the new urban movement the city brings and the history that it tell. We aim a conjugation between the new design of contemporary forms and spaces that can, at the same time, accentuate the importance for the connection with the existing museum, and create links between space, materiality and design intentions. The main design idea initiated with the connection with the current facilities. Without interfering with its visible allocation, the new extension creates an passageway running from the underground level, which allows us to, not only connect, but also create a new space that wouldn’t interfere with the “breathing area” of the current museum space. Thus, we are able to create a gap between the two buildings without detaching but emphasizing their differences. This action bent the possibility to create the foyer and entrance access in the mid area between them, enabling to renovate and take the most advantage from an underground situation we were determined to exclude – the “basement” level. Therefore, the foyer and entrance area will absorb a whole level, highlighting it. With the connection created it was imperative to remember the relations from the street level we needed to produce. The patio arises as the connection between all the levels and its relation with the interior allow us to cover and close most of the walls from the main exhibition rooms, creating a circular path between all levels and rooms. It works as a crossing between the street level and the entrance level, and also creates an inside-out space that connects the urban with the museum facilities in a very intimate way. The building will have two main entrances and two side entrances, making it accessible from all sides and improving access to the main hall.

Bamiyan Cultural Center Bamiyan, Afghanistan 2016 Joana Ferreira ; David Monteiro; Helder Casal Ribeiro; Gonรงalo Carvalho; Fernando Miranda Design concept
The proposal for the Bamiyan Cultural Center aims to establish a direct relationship between the natural elements that characterize the site and the adjacent landscape, integrating topographical conditions and linking existing pedestrian routes. The proposal reinterprets the local landscape through a compact system, composed by distinctive spatial elements that regard Afghan urban patterns and its cultural heritage. The volumetric network pursues a delicate balance between architecture and nature, revealing itself to the city in a subtle rise from the high ground, overlooking the Bamiyan Valley and the Buddha Cliff. This proposal envisioned an extension of the Bamiyan traditions through architectural forms and was thought as a representation of a green and wild site - ecological forest concept - representing elements that are recognizable to the city´s context. The architectural idea envisions an open and lively public complex, an authentic cultural center, allowing visibility among the different spaces and diverse activities. The interaction between the different programs provides a dynamic, curatorial and educational programming promoting positive public environment and cross-cultural interface. This project pretends to contribute to the broader goals of reconciliation, peace-building development between the people of Afghanistan.
Puu, a (water) research center is located in a peninsula, at the lake Lounaja, in Suomussalmi, in Finland’s Middle East. In this location, the presence of large wood amount is meaningful part of this research work. In order to make the best use of local resources, the project is based on trying to combine function, structure and design. This adaptation to a local landscape allows us to have a sustainable use of energy and raw material, and the logistical problem of material transportation is already solved. The starting point was to create a space division between working and living, orienting itself according to sun position. Facing North, the living space is looking at the lake, with many tall and open windows. The working space, where are situated offices and the laboratory, is facing the forest in the south. The bedrooms are situated on the first level of the working area, and can be reached by a staircase situated in the middle of these two spaces, connecting both of them. This staircase can only be reached by the living area, so the work and living spaces can have different functions and times for who lives there.

Pispala is a unique location where the gradation of the land falls to frame lakes and woodlands around the base of the site. Few opportunities exist within Tampere where one can witness this perspective of the lay of the land and observe the discourse between city and nature. My intention was to use the familiar typology of a library to not only react to the surrounding context but create an interplay between exterior and interior. The austere tectonic of the concrete block gives little away to the inner arrangements nor to the unique juxtaposition of views that are created within. After entering the lobby, a warm timber lining envelopes the occupants and enhances the sense of enclosure. The ground floor divides the library from the social spaces and allows the two to work independently. Reading and study spaces receive ample of north light whilst the circulation and cafĂŠ make use of south light. The window is the focus of the rooms. It is the liminal element that ties together the landscape from the hearth and in so doing maintains the necessary tension of the two elements. Therefore the library, through the careful choreography of views and spaces, avoids grand gestural openings but rather enhances particular moments of the landscape to give the citizens of Pispala a renewed perspective of their home.
