Juan Cabot Mascaró, architect. Curriculum Vitae D.O.B. 14th March 1984 ARB Registration Number: 080321I 75 Mount Pleasant Lane, Flat 2 London E5 9EW Tel: +44(0)7928071395 Email: jcmascaro@gmail.com
Profile / personal statement: I graduated as an architect at the ‘Escola Tecnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona’ (etsaB, UPC) where I participated in the Erasmus Exchange Program moving to Lund, Sweden. After a three month internship in 2009 in Geneva I moved to London on a Leonardo Scholarship. Once I had acquired enough knowledge of UK’s contruction industry, I sought a change and joined Inglis Badrashi Loddo architects. After delivering the shortlisted AJ Retrofit Awards 2017 mixed-used Jeddo Road project to practical completion, I left the practice to join Lisa Shell architects where I have expanded on my leading architect role and gained substantial experience in detailing and delivering carefully crafted projects for our clients. With a strong believe in maintaining coherence throughout the project stages I have engaged and successfully shaped the projects I’ve been involved in: from feasibility studies to completion with good knowledge of the planning system trhough all stages. I have also been involved in buildings within conservation areas and listed buildings. Over the past 8 years of working experience in UK I have been involved in many projects in different RIBA stages, acquired solid on-site experience and developed my role as project architect and contract administrator. I am currently seeking for a open-minded practice where to continue delivering good and carefully designed buildings and potentially bringing in and developing my own personal commissions. Skills: Strong design initiative, very good space vision and hand drawing skills. Highly proficient in AutoCAD, Microstation and Vectorworks; efficient Sketchup, Photoshop, Illustrator and the Adobe Creative Suite user; as well as Microsoft Office software. I have some experience with NBS specification software, and otherwise Microsoft Word specification sheets. I am also experienced in Bentley AECOsim Building Designer and Revit (BIM), and other 3D software such as Rhinoceros and Vray rendering plug-in. Good skills for physical modelling too. Overall, there are three sense oflight massindustrial and materialityand to thedwelling flat different blocks each one with its very own character, structure typology. The fully refurbished terrace interiors. house flats and roof extension; the preserved brick arcade faรงade of the industrial building with newly formed RC frame and rooftop setback on top; and at the back, two mews houses with basement level lightwells, generous balcony to the main courtyard and rooftop terraces. All these blocks are conceived as a single project with a common access strategy stablished around the central communal courtyard. 10 Highbury Terrace Mews, London N1, 2016-18. New build 3-bedroom 3 storey dwelling - Project architect Stages from planning submission to construction
This page, top to bottom, left to right: Rear elevation view from backyard, roof volume during consruction, axonometric view of he house.
Following a client request, I started working in this project with the brief of adding a third storey to an already approved scheme for a 2 storey house. This third floor was conceived as sort of a ‘hat’ for the existing building, a black bowler hat made of black zinc with the rest of the building being ipe timber cladding. The clients own the terrace house at the other end of the plot and bought the mews house from its neighours. They wanted a smaller well-organised house to move into or perhaps to leave to their son. As such, the house is well organised with open plan at ground floor; master bedroom with en-suite, studio and shower room at first floor; and upper studio and terraces at second floor. The roof was particularly challenging to build/ set out with a mansard pitch to front, a regular 35 degree roof pitch to rear, a side pitch to respect the neighbours party wall (from which the clients bought the plot) as much as possible and various notches, slots and punch holes for terraces, balcony and rooflight. Project designed and built at Lisa Shell architects.

Desafios Urbanos 12, Guimaraes, Portugal, 2012. Competition, Refurbishment of an old industrial factory into a Cultural Centre and Business Hub Personal venture in collaboration with Lucia Cerrada
We took part in a competition in Guimaraes to refurbish and transform an old industrial textile factory set in the Ave valley into a Cultural Centre & Business Hub. The urban strategy relied on understanding the building’s critical position in one of the main axis departing from the city centre towards the train station and, creating two open spaces at each end of the old industrial factory. A public viewing platform which would act as a welcoming feature for the train arrivals and a cloister-type space for the centre’s entrance hall. The viewing platform was defined with a small towering residential block extension with its main façade facing the public space. A long corridor arcade would serve as link between both ends, allowing a pleasent walkway with views both to the small nearby forest and to the artists’ ateliers and galleries. Circulation and other ancillary spaces where rationally located within the building and at its lowest level. This page top to bottom: Axonometric view; Existing and proposed massing studies; View of main street façade.

Artamis Eco-Quarter Housing, Geneva, Switzerland. 2009 Competition for new eco quarter housing and school - Architectural assisstant Stages from inception to competition submission
During a summer internship in Geneva at Daniela Liengme, we entered a competition to develop a scheme for a new eco-quarter in the former alternative arts and crafts community hub, known as Artamis. Three different urban housing blocks of some 60-80 dwellings each were to be allocated plus a public educational facility. In an attempt to keep the artistic activity to the area, a central passage was envisaged to gather all shop and atelier frontages, link the two main streets at either end and structure the urban blocks at each side of this new axis. From this central corridor, open spaces were designed in different levels, ranging from the most public, followed by communal inner gardens and private terraces and rooftops. This page, top to bottom, left to right: Central passage visualisation; housing block first floor plan. Project designed and worked on at Daniella Liengme architectes.

The project aims to provide a mixed used scheme for elderly/ young people to the borough located at the very limit of the historic centre of Palma de Mallorca. Special attention was put in facade materials, volume massing with parapet wall levels to match the traditional surroundings and a rhythm in openings driven by the traditional window whilst still bringing a contemporary quality to it. The massing studies concluded with a towering corner that responds to its border and corner condition, very present and visible from the main boulevard and holding all communal spaces. It was developed under the tuition of Jordi Garcés, principal at Garcés de Seta Bonet Arquitectos studio. This page, top to bottom and left to right: Physical model; Second Floor Plan; hand-sketched massing studies. Project designed and developed as student at University of Catalunya, Barcelona. 2009-2010.

O2 Roofwalk, London, 2012. Work Experience at bblur architecture Architectural Assistant Following Sir Richard Roger´s concept for a suspended walkway above the O2 arena, bblur was commissioned to develop the project from stage D to completion. My involvement was key in drawing and detailing the central and access platforms, balustrades and the two pavilions on each side of roof walk. Worked in collaboration with Buro Happold.
Mixirica House; Galicia, Spain, 2012. Personal ventures - Direct commission, in collaboration with Lucia Cerrada A series of studies (use, orientation, views, access,...) were developed and led to the final and most optimal layout within the challenging squared plan. All interiors were designed and a fully glazed ‘L’ shaped extension was proposed facing south and the main garden at the back. This element was envisaged as a flexible element between the garden and the house, blurring the limits of internal and external spaces. Ceuta Harbour Masterplan, Spain, 2007. Academic education - UPC, Barcelona. Barcelona university was comissioned to study Cetuta’s city and infrastructures and come up with strategies to open up the city to the coast. We focused on a hybrid model for the harbour area where some of the habour’s heavy activity was kept behind a ‘curtain’ of city housing and civic buidlings facing the old container plateaus. The public realm was conceived as an articulated sequence of spaces between the new harbour and the old city walls. Juan Cabot CV 2018
