LENTEN NEWS

FROM THE PASTOR

LENTEN REGULATIONS

In every preface to the Eucharistic Prayer, immediately before the Sanctus (Holy, Holy), the final word prayed is “acclaim”. The Webster Dictionary defines acclaim as “to praise (someone or something) in a very strong and enthusiastic way.” It comes from the Latin acclamare, literally, to shout at. Each time we pray these words at Mass let us be sure to acclaim the holiness, might, and power of our God.

The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. The obligation to abstain from meat binds Catholics 14 years of age and older. It is obvious that abstaining from meat is meaningless for vegetarians, who must choose some other form of abstinence. It is equally obvious that replacing meat with a gourmet seafood meal is not in keeping with the spirit of Lent.

How can we ever thank God for a gift like that? God does not ask us to sacrifice our own precious firstborn, but He does ask that we be generous in making some sacrifices for Him.

2015 ANNUAL DIOCESAN APPEAL Our Goal: $11,050.00

If you are a victim or survivor - of sexual abuse by members of the Catholic clergy or representatives of the Catholic Church and you want to make a formal complaint of abuse to the diocese, arrange a personal meeting with the bishop or his representative, and/or to obtain support for the needs of the individual and families, call Ms Mary Girard, Victim Assistance Coordinator (318) 623-3804 or the Diocesan HOTLINE (318) 445-1427.

All that we have and all that we are comes from the Lord. “We are truly his handiwork,” says St. Paul in the second reading, “created in Christ Jesus to lead a life of good deeds which God prepared for us in advance.” Once a year, we are asked, as part of the Diocesan Church, to make a commitment to support the work of Diocesan programs and ministries that provide services that no one parish could provide on its own. Next weekend, in every parish throughout the Diocese of Alexandria, Catholics will be asked to support the 2015 Annual Diocesan Appeal if they have not done so already.

We would also like to include the names of any active duty military for whom you would like us to pray. If you know any nursing home residents for whom you would like us to pray, please inform Kathy of their names.
