Congratulations
Jr./Sr. High Religious Education
Our seminarian intern Derek Ducote was ordained a deacon this Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Alexandria. As a transitional deacon (he will be ordained a priest next year) rather than a permanent Deacon (one who remains a Deacon permanently) Derek’s official title is now Rev. Mr. In conversation he should be addressed as Deacon Derek, Deacon Ducote, or simply Deacon. He will be preaching all Masses here this weekend and next. Please offer Deacon Derek your congratulations and continued prayers as he prepares for priestly ordination.
This fall, grades 7-10 .will meet on Sunday evenings in the Youth Center following the 5:30PM Mass. While it is our intention that the students attend the 5:30PM Mass, it is not a requirement should they choose to attend Mass at an alternate time. These weekly gatherings will be a combination of religious education and youth ministry, ending at 8:00PM. This change from Wednesday evenings is to avoid, as much as possible, the conflicts that periodically happen on Wednesday evenings. It is also an opportunity for this age group to meet exclusively with teachers Matt and Katie in a more relaxed, multi -educational experience where issues of current events and religion can be addressed and discussed. Registration and an orientation meeting for parents and students will be announced soon.

Today’s Gospel turns our attention to one of Jesus’ most familiar stories, the Parable of the Good Samaritan. It is about living how God intended us to live: to acknowledge God’s divine love and compassion lavished upon us, and to extend that love and compassion upon others without reservation. We can find a lot of reasons for not stopping to help someone. We can talk ourselves out of being Good Samaritans. Strangers are not our responsibility, or are they? Good stewards understand that God’s mercy is a gift that must be shared, and that doing the right thing, acting as Jesus would act toward others, is the only course of action for one who lives according to the demands of the Gospel. How might you be a Good Samaritan this week?
