Welcome Welcome to Derby Remembers, a season of cultural events and activities to commemorate the First World War, allowing people of all ages to explore their own and the city’s connection to the conflict. Drawing on archive letters, literature and artefacts, the programme will open up hidden histories and personal accounts of how the war impacted on the lives of the men, women and children of Derby. These will sit alongside contemporary responses to themes of conflict and remembrance, using film, poetry, story, music and performance. Derby Remembers is timed to coincide with Poppies: Weeping Window at The Silk Mill, which provides a focal point for reflection within this diverse season. The Derby Cultural Education Partnership has also created a bespoke learning programme in order to encourage a deeper understanding of the First World War and which supports learning outcomes in art, history and literature. The Derby Remembers programme has been made possible through the commitment and support of a unique mix of partners that involves arts organisations, libraries, museums, university and schools from across the city.

Internationally renowned author Sebastian Faulks’ latest book Where My Heart Used to Beat returns to what have become recurring themes in his novels: war and love. Probably his best-loved novel, Birdsong vividly depicts a British soldier’s experience on the frontline during the First World War.

An evening Fire Trail will light a pathway from the Cathedral to The Silk Mill, creating a unique and reflective way for the public to interact with Poppies: Weeping Window.

Paul’s artistic work includes the creation of the installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London in 2014 with designer Tom Piper. Paul will discuss the research and process behind his creative works, as well as his career to date, inspiring the next generation of designers and makers. Take a seat at the Making History table to twist, fold and transform the newspaper headlines from 100 years ago and create a lasting memento of your visit to experience Poppies: Weeping Window.

This exhibition draws on personal stories of commemoration from the collections of Derby Museums, the 9th/12th Lancers Regimental Museum and the Midland Railway Study Centre to explore how we remember those who were lost in conflict over the last 100 years. Dave McKean Illustrator, comic artist, filmmaker and musician Dave McKean presents readings from his graphic novel Black Dog - The Dreams of Paul Nash in a multimedia performance with live musical accompaniment. The book explores one of the most important British artists of the twentieth century, whose paintings inspired by the First World War have a disturbing, lasting power. FEMALE TOMMIES: WOMEN IN UNIFORM IN WW1

Elisabeth Shipton 2017 marks the centenary of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps and the Women’s Royal Naval Service. The Women’s Royal Air Force followed a year later, by which time almost 200,000 women had seen active service with the British military. Elisabeth Shipton will examine the militarisation of women in the war zone during the First World War, specifically how the voluntary medical units paved the way for the auxiliary services. Dir: Esther Johnson Narrated by Kate Adie, Asunder tells the story of what happened to a quintessential British town during the First World War, with virtually all of its men fighting abroad and its women and children left behind. Co-commissioned by 14-18 NOW, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary, the film uses archive and contemporary footage and audio, the stories of people from Tyneside and Wearside are revealed, uncovering what life was like on the home front. COMMUNITY, IDENTITY AND COMMEMORATION: BRITAIN AND THE FIRST WORLD WAR The symposium will explore how the War impacted on Britain’s communities and the impact it has had on the evolution of a shared identity. THE SHERWOOD FORESTERS AT THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME

Brian Stone On 1st July 1916, 160,000 men climbed out of their trenches for the opening of the Battle of the Somme, with the 1/5 battalion of the Sherwood Foresters involved in some of the heaviest fighting. Alongside maps of the battlefield, this talk will examine the experience of the “Robin Hoods” in their own words taken from memoirs, journals and letters.

BENJAMIN BRITTEN’S WAR REQUIEM AND PETER ROBERTS’ STRANGE MEETING In his War Requiem, Britten used some of his most emotive music when setting Wilfred Owen’s poems. The concert offers a unique opportunity to hear these extracts in the resonant acoustics of Derby Cathedral. The evening opens with the world premiere of Strange Meeting, an emotionally charged play inspired by Owen’s poem, commissioned by Sinfonia Viva for The Lost Boys. This activity is an opportunity for families to discover the stories of war through the interpretation of postcards written during the First World War from the Museum’s collection. By designing and writing their own reflections, thoughts and stories in this form, visitors will be able to send postcards to the past.

Dr. Mike Galer This fascinating illustrated talk by Dr. Mike Galer, author of Derby: Remembering 1914-18, offers an intimate portrayal of Derby and its people, living in the shadow of the “War to End All Wars”. Copies of Dr. Galer’s book will be available to purchase on the night.

MAGIC LANTERN TALES

Ian McMillan and Ian Beesley Poet & broadcaster Ian McMillan and documentary photographer Ian Beesley tell a story of the First World War from the point of view of the men and women who survived it and lived on to old age. By using original magic lantern projectors, Ian and Ian recreate the atmosphere of the popular form of entertainment of the time as they present heartbreaking stories through poems and songs. REMINISCENCE AND WELLBEING PROGRAMME FOR EX-SERVICE PERSONNEL Derby County Community Trust has secured funding from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund and the Royal British Legion to deliver a 12 month programme for ex-armed service personnel and their families. DERBY THEATRE - CREATIVE LITERACY WORKSHOPS Animals in the First World War (KS2) A practical workshop exploring the roles of animals, using extracts from Michael Morpurgo’s War Horse. Tommy’s Tales - Life in the Trenches (KS3+) Exploring the life of a First World War soldier, through active approaches to unlock and help students to connect with the language and poetry of the First World War.
