CSAV Journal 2022 10th of January 2022
Upcycling & Climate Change Possible future solutions inspired by vernacular architecture lessons
Journal edition no. XIII Editor: Sergiu NISTOR Coordinator: Ioana ZACHARIAS VULTUR
The 2022 edition of CSAV Journal invites the authors to try to respond to the contemporary and future challenges of the rural settlements and their environment, by learning from vernacular architecture’s essential definition: adaptation to human needs and environment. The two keywords of the topic are interdependent: upcycling and climate change. By definition, upcycling means a creative reuse process of “discarded objects or material in such a way as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original” (Oxford English Dictionary). Therefore, how can we apply this method in rural architecture & design for a more sustainable, ecofriendly approach ? The context is the contemporary challenge of climate change. It is high time to take action and find solutions, as the effects are here and visible through a wide range of hazards: floods due to heavy rainfall and snow or the overflowing of rivers, droughts, heavy winds (and even cyclones on Romanian territory), etc. as well as problems created by human behaviour. Indeed, the contrast between the idyllic Romanian rural settlements and the way communities and newcomers behave can be a subject of debate and a problem to solve, where architecture and urban planning professionals can have an essential educational role.

In addressing this contemporary topic, ecohistorians can demonstrate us how vernacular architecture (around the world) was always adapted to new living conditions, which is what we need to do again. Contemporary urban planners and heritage professionals seek for solutions in the very lessons of the vernacular architecture: https:// www.oxfordurbanists.com/oxford-urbanists-monthly/2020/1/5/vernacular-architectureand-climate-change. Vernacular architecture is therefore once more a valuable resource for contemporary approaches. The contributors are invited to go into depth, beyond clichés and globally used keywords, to appeal to human knowledge and their own professional formation. Critical thinking as well as problem-solving approaches are essential. The invitation is open to a rich variety of contributors in the flexibility of this edition’s topic: from interior designers, to architects, urban planners, landscape architects, anthropologists, sociologists, ecologists, ecohistorians, educators, students and PhD candidates, as well as other scientific researchers. Written and drawn contributions are welcome for the various chapters of CSAV Journal: Dossier: Design studio projects: Diploma project & dissertation: PhD Research: Profile: Reviews:
