MEASURE

We begin by identifying and analyzing the existing research base that supports the priorities of a specific initiative.

Research findings are then translated into practical design solutions that are tailored to multiple public and private sector audiences.

We champion successful projects to advance systemic change and inform others who may replicate the process.

We create resources and offer implementation support that ranges from expert content advice to specific technical assistance, depending on the needs of the project.

Project outcomes are measured to determine the benefit and impact of specific interventions.

HIGHLIGHTS The design of where we live, work, and play has a measurable impact on our physical, social, and mental health. We use design and development as indispensable tools to address existing disparities within HOUSING, WORKPLACES, and NEIGHBORHOODS. Our ADVOCACY work ensures widespread use of Active Design, so that its benefits may be realized across all communities.

RESEARCH    TRANSLATE     IMPLEMENT    MEASURE    RECOGNIZE

Shaping Healthy and Engaged Communities With funding from the Knight Foundation, CfAD is developing a first-ofits-kind publication that offers cities, civic leaders, and designers with a comprehensive set of design strategies that invite participation in civic life. To date, over 380 studies and 50 experts have informed its development. Over the past year, CfAD served as the expert content advisor and co-author for the Urban Land Institute’s, Building Healthy Places Toolkit: Strategies for Enhancing the Built Environment. CfAD translated the evidence base into 21 design recommendations that impact physical health and social engagement.

WORKPLACE

RESEARCH    TRANSLATE     IMPLEMENT    MEASURE    RECOGNIZE

Advancing Healthy Workplace Design In the U.S., an estimated 1.2 million employees spend 8.1 hours a day at work, with the majority of that time spent being sedentary. To promote more active workplaces, CfAD is leading pioneering research to investigate the impact of adjustable workstations on employee health and wellbeing. This research is being conducted with funding from the American Society of Interior Designers Foundation, and in partnership with Steelcase, Perkins+Will, and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, CfAD. Study results are anticipated to be published in 2017. 2016 Impact Report

Championing Children’s Health To make a measurable difference where it’s needed most, CfAD joined with the Partnership for a Healthier America to launch Active Design Verified—an initiative promoting implementation of low and no cost Active Design strategies in affordable housing. Developers who commit to joining the program receive training and technical assistance, verification of implementation, and public recognition of success. Commitments made to date will affect over 4,250 units of housing, impacting the lives of thousands of children and families across the U.S.
