MIND Chunghan Huang Architecture Por tfolio
For the application to the Master of Architecture program
Prologue How can architecture mentally enrich people's lives? Rapid modernization and capitalism cause mental issues globally, and as a young generation, we are in a most prosperous and tenuous time. From this perspective, my projects mainly concentrate on mitigating or healing these intangible mental disorders. In the portfolio, the five selected projects address these issues with a distinctive interventionist philosophy. "Daily Mental Relief " creates remedial spaces for office workers by capturing the genius loci from drawings and poems. The works contain the emotions of depression and relief in my experience. As art and texts provide the global mental resonance, I have transformed my messages into space and hope that the office workers could mentally find a portion of my relief. "Take Back the Peace" creates the modern dormitory by integrating with the school's aura of peace. As students always stare at their phones, they often ignore the school's percious atmosphere. In my dormitory proposal, I maximally push the students to immerse themselves in the surroundings through an axial skywalk and a spreading-housing plan. "Weaving" creates innovative spatially constructional methods to build people's connections. As a biological system is often highly accurately developed, I studied the spider's silk-forming process, seeking to create a new method to link space and people with organicismal space. "Time museum" influences visitors' minds by making them notice a time lag. People will walk through a maze-like landscape with orderly arranged exhibits and will only realize the whole journey is an exhibit when they look back from the museum's main building. "The hidden river" restores citizenship by revealing the covered river. Due to a lack of maintenance, the government covered the river full of collective memories. I designed a city activity center with a waterfront-like urban public space, hoping that citizens would find their memories, and even better, build a new one. However, individual projects deal with local issues within regional boundaries. I expect the global impact they can have on people and ultimately bring attention to the importance of the sentimental perception to our society and the world.

01. Da i l y Me n ta l Re l i e f After a busy day, we get back home, lie on the soft sofa, and ask ourselves. ”Why am I so exhausted?”
“What am I working hard for?“
I have no idea what is pushing me and why I should keep going forward. Immersed in tasks, overwhelm, and stress. How do modern people find relief ?
We live in a stable system with definite orders. Capitalism evaluated everything's value with its expense, no matter a person, memory, or sentiment . Efficiency first , the cost-performance ratio and KPI are eliminating humanity. Overwhelmed information irresistibly occupied our little attention and times. People are mechanized and homogenized, making them more helpless and insecure. We could only submit to the system and become a cog in the vast society. Ultimately, we lose our soul and sentimental perception. It is a stable but stifled world.

To relieve, people have to examine and adjust the balance between EGO and SUPEREGO routinely. We construct the community as the community builds us. Reach reconcili ation between a person and society is the only solution. To draw out the boundary, removing either of the blacks will devastate the concept . They live for each other, and the blurry line will only reveal when we identify them as one. Co-existing without changing the core is the principle.

02. Ta ke B a c k th e Pe a ce Tunghai University is a masterpiece of revolutionizing the traditional Chinese garden and architecture with a uniquely western perspective. Also, it is a classic planning project and was designed by I.M. Pei and Chen Chi-Kwan. The campus exudes an aura of peace and poetry while masterly balancing the school's intense activities. However, as the student enrollment increases rapidly, the school hungers for a new dormitory. The new building has to fuse into the unique atmosphere. Moreover, it should present the future of student dorms. Neverthe less, what kind of dorm life do the nowadays students need? As cell-phones and all kinds of digital products occupying our attention, modern students have lost the capability to perceive the surroundings. It is a vast pity, especially for Tunghai University's students. School should not only instruct knowledge but also mature students' minds by mak ing them reflect from their surroundings. Therefore, as classrooms offer space to absorb, dormitories play a vital role in providing space to reflect . The project is a group of dormitories that focus on letting students put down their phones and immerses into Tunghai University's inspiring surrounding. Hopefully, they will self-reflect and take back the peace.

Social context: Modern students often lack of self-awareness Nowadays, we wrapped everything. We spend a lot of time shopping for clothes, not improve our selves. We invent numerous decorating strategies for architecture and spend less time optimizing spatial quality. The kids that grow up in this generation tend to cover themselves. What is worse, they did it so subtly that they seldom notice. Shut down people when they question. Ignore the surroundings. Difficult to empathize with others. Express the wrong emotions. Modern students spend less time reflecting and evaluat ing thoughts. For this reason, they often blindly follow others. To exemplify, a student believes that he needs to take the expensive courses due to his idol’s strong recommendation without thinking about value and gain personally.

“To know thyself is the beginning of wisdom.” To instruct students comprehensively, the schools should provide spaces to reflect . The campus should have places guiding students to put down their phones and start thinking about what they have learned, the meaningful goal, and how they will pursue it . Therefore, they could significantly build their own identity from the time they spend with themselves.

03 . We a v in g Organicismal space could free the restriction of people's minds. Also, it subverts the hierarchy of form and concept . Traditionally, western philosophy emphasizes logocentrism and phonocentrism. Its excludability and uniqueness restrict the freedom of thinking. For example, we often prefer direct talking instea d of indirect writing, which is often regarded as incomplete representation. In other words, we usually choose the design concepts rather than the forms, which are often considered as a tool for presenting the ideas. At the end of the twentieth century, deconstruction criticizes western philosophy's fundamental conceptual distinction by challenging modern architecture's functionalist aesthetic. For instance, Frank Gehry used radical geometries, irregular forms, and complex, dynamic constructions. Based on the experience and the advancement of technology, this project develops a new de sign strategy through the computation and the observation of spider silk's molecular. Hopefully, we could subvert the tradition and search for the leap of people's minds.

04. T i me Mu se u m Art is an abstraction. Architecture is an art . Architecture is an abstraction. (Milton Stricker, 2010) Many relationships between abstraction and architecture have always been through nature. The abstraction process gives a way to see nature and how to build a connection to architecture. The process is based on the spirit of nature. The complex power of natural phenomena can be stripped down through abstrac tion, simplified, studied, and shifted into dynamic design possibilities. In this project , my architectural design concept was transformed from the concept model, which captured the time's instant and permanence. To be more specific, I let the tree branch burn in a mold while pouring polyeste r resin to cast . By doing so, I could layer the moments by collecting the ashes that were converted at different times. At the same time, the polyester resin froze the burning branch. Eventually, I designed a museum using the concept as a visit ing route. This project also integrated the landscape design and the urban design to empower the visiting experience- notice the time.

Repeated from step 2-pour the next round of polyester- until the fire went out . 6. Ashes were layered in the polyester and marked the particular moments.

05. T he H id d e n Riv e r Central District is an urban district in Taichung City, the western of Central Taiwan. Although it locates at the heart of the city, it has declined in recent years, and the collective memory has seen removal. In the Japanese era, the area saw mass development . The government adopted a grid plan at a human scale and built the central train station. Also, recreational activities were available at the riverside. The riverbank was framed in trees that brighten up the natural landscape, and the citizen enjoyed night walk and boat tours. However, under the Republic of China, the roads are too tight to accommodate for modern growth. Therefore, new districts to the west proliferated, and the Central District has declined. In 2010, Taichung City Hall moved away from the Central District to the West District . The river in the Central District was lack of maintenance and even caused an unpleasant odor. Additionally, the government constructed roads above the stinky river to avoid the issue. What was worse, they hid the precious river and eliminate d the urban public spaces at the riverside. The project is a community activity center, located at the intersection of the city main road and the hidde n river. The project reveals the hidden river and creates various kinds of urban river landscapes to reconstruct its collective memory. Hopefully, the citizen could find their childhood memory here and build the new one.
