When NE Portland favorite Hollywood Theatre moved a new neon lighted marquee into the Portland International Airport (PDX) this year, Concourse C solidified its place among the top terminals in the country. All travelers can catch a short film at the theater if they check in early enough, as all the movies are free of charge for ticketed passengers. The theater is a seventeenseat microcinema with a seasonal rotating schedule of films. The films run for about an hour, and are made by Oregon filmmakers.

Stripped down is the name of the game for Bos Taurus, a pocket-size, steakhouse that opened in boutique downtown Bend this summer. In the same vein as its name, which simply means “cow,” the menu is divided into steak and not steak. The atmosphere of Bos reads more “big city” than Central Oregon, but the restaurant fills a void in Bend’s fine dining scene. Bos is a passion project from the founders of 10 Barrel and three more steak lovers who wanted to create a chef-driven, high-end steakhouse downtown.

The long list of fans waiting to get season tickets to the Timbers, Portland’s Major League Soccer team, will get some reprieve with the recently announced expansion to Providence Park. The oft-cited waitlist has stretched into the tens of thousands, and every game has sold out since the first game for the MLS team in 2011. The expansion, designed by Allied Works Architecture, will add an additional 4,000 seats to the stadium in northwest Portland, which is also the home of the National Women’s Soccer team, the Portland Thorns. providenceparkpdx.com

rant about ten years ago, and there was this copper-toned brick ceiling dome that was probably, who knows, 400 years old,” said homeowner Shelley Finnigan. “It really caught my eye and became a focal point of the photos I’ve catalogued for inspiration over the years.” Architect Thomas Deatherage helped Shelley and her husband, David, incorporate that nostalgic visual and many more modern takes on old-world touches when he designed their custom Bend home in 2015. A dramatic, herringbone-patterned brick dome ceiling in their kitchen is one of many homages to old-Italian architecture in the Finnigan’s home. The project’s contractor team from SunWest Builders trimmed ambient lighting into a racetrack faceted around the oval dome using LED up-lighting, resulting in an ethereal glow. A nod to the couple’s secondary inspiration, the high desert landscape, is illuminated from underneath the large island below

the dome using more track lighting. The island, topped with “blue wow” granite, is patterned with swirls in reddish clay tones amid rich browns and tans. “It looks like the topography of Central Oregon,” said Shelley. “The crew at SunWest say they haven’t seen granite like that before or since.” This earth-tone color scheme was a good fit for the couple, who had fallen in love with high desert landscape during the fifteen years that they had been visiting David’s daughter and two grandchildren, who live in Bend. David, now 61, was planning to retire from his career in private equity, and southern Florida, where the couple lived for nine years, didn’t feel like the right fit for their retirement. “This place suits our lifestyle, especially since we were heading into retirement at a relatively young age,” said Shelley, 53, noting that they were destined to live in the Northwest because much of their family lives on the West Coast. “When thinking 

about retirement and our forever home, we kept coming back to this small town: the warm feeling, the activities—you know, all the reasons people move to Bend.” The livability of Central Oregon drew them in, but “David’s retirement only lasted a year,” she said, laughing about the quick turnaround. “He’s already taken a new job, but he’s primarily telecommuting, and when he does commute, it’s a convenient, direct flight to Denver so we can still call Bend home.” Years of moving around for David’s career and traveling the world together had solidified Shelley’s desire for an updated European aesthetic. They found their

dream property on three-and-a-half acres overlooking the Deschutes River, two miles south of Bend at the end of a quiet road. Choosing a build site that would take advantage of the views and cliffside privacy the large lot afforded, they set to work conceptualizing their dream home. A photographer, Shelley wanted to conjure architectural styles she had documented while traveling in Europe over the years. Traditional elements of Mediterranean design—particularly of Italy and Spain during the Baroque period—suited their taste. To keep the home feeling updated yet timeless, the Finnigans kept the palate light and neutral, incorporating European

materials with rustic elements in a design that would take advantage of natural light and the property’s scenery. “Kirsti [of Kirsti Wolfe Designs] was instrumental in helping me, especially since we were living in London during much of the design process,” said Shelley. “I had formulated my taste but she led me to many of the finishes—I knew what I wanted as soon as I saw it.” The main living space for the 5,600-square-foot home is on one level and includes three guest bedrooms with en suite bathrooms. The master bedroom was built using a functional step-down design. “We wanted to make use of the topog-

raphy,” explained Shelley. “Instead of filling in the grade of the volcanic rock to make it a true ranch, we used the economy of the layout to stack the home into the natural landscape.” Underneath the main home, Deatherage designed the garage and a 600-squarefoot photography studio for Shelley. The architect even left one section of exposed volcanic rock on that lower level as an organic feature wall in the wine cellar. A dumbwaiter helps with heavy lifting from car to kitchen. Custom mosaic tiles from Pakistan adorn the risers in the stairwell that connects the downstairs to the main level, where the Baroque influence begins. 

Rounded window arches made from a rich, chestnut-stained wood enhance soft lines throughout the home. The windows capture panoramic Deschutes River, forest and sagebrush views from all but two rooms. Arched door frames extend the Baroque theme, creating flow. “Being a photographer, light is everything,” said Shelley. “We wanted natural light to pour into the home, maximizing the beautiful morning sun and the sunset that are both visible from the site.” A picture window behind the tub in the master bathroom frames David’s favorite view, just down river from a section of rapids. The flood of

natural light in the spa-like bathroom exemplifies the “outside-in” interplay the Finnigans wanted to implement. The couple also had a double steam shower installed to give their skin a bit of Florida’s warm humidity—a touch Finnigan was grateful for during the harsh winter of 2016-2017, their first winter in the home. Wolfe has SunWest implement a curved design for the heated granite lounge and bench. Another element that mitigates feeling a chill on cold days and nights are the two fireplaces built into the indoor-outdoor patio living area, a space that runs the length of their open-concept kitchen, formal dining room and great room. Complete with a barbecue and wet bar, the covered patio is accessible via the kitchen nook and the great room through four banks of panel folding doors. This nearly doubles the home’s entertaining area.

After several attempts to light his cigar were foiled by wind, David agreed with Shelley’s assessment that the river side of the patio needed some protection if they were going to use the space during all four seasons. They installed four massive glass sliding barn doors along the railing to block the wind-tunnel effect that can pick up in the river canyon. “Believe it or not, we can entertain year-round out there now,” said Shelley. “Everyone always wants to be out by the river. It’s Bend; it’s beautiful.” The diffused light from the kitchen dome and the island provide a warm, candle-like visibility throughout all the entertaining spaces, providing the couple and their guests with easy evening mobility and no grasping for light switches. Back in the great room, arched timber truss framing rounds out the Mediterranean-meets-rustic

influence. The couple chose to fasten the entire cathedral ceiling in wood, adding a vaulted dimension that they carried through to the patio ceiling, as well. A twelve-foot-long, hand scribed wooden mantel over the great room fireplace ties in the wooden textures at eye level. “We want our home to hold up to the test of time while still having a wow factor,” said Shelley. Iron trusses and handrails from Ponderosa Ironworks in Sisters add a local layer of functionality. A grand front door made with hand-cut, leaded glass from Bend Glass welcomes them home. European granite in all six bathrooms says classic luxury while the mosaic tile selections add visual interest. Shelley explained that they chose all these finishes to add character without tipping toward trendiness. “I did a lot of homework. Through my research and pinning things on Pinterest, a theme really showed up,” said Shelley. “We didn’t try to build an old home that’s brand new, just one with classic taste.” 

Wines for a Cause:

HEATHER MARTIN’S PLAN B was to go back to practicing

law, so she took—and passed—the Oregon bar exam. Just in case. What she really wanted to do was to work for a cause. The smattering of pro bono cases she had worked during her commercial litigation career in Columbus had stirred in her a desire for a philanthropic position. Martin and her husband were a decade into their careers and looking for a change. They talked about moving west to Seattle or Portland, where they could begin a new chapter in a milder climate. When her husband was offered a dream position in Portland, they made the move. It’s tough for most people to imagine taking a bar exam, let alone as a backup plan, but it’s that tenacity which took the sharp, driven and quick-witted Martin from having little nonprofit experience at age 33 to getting hired as executive director of Classic Wines Auction just a year later—a few weeks before she found out she was pregnant with the first of the couple’s two sons. “Life, right?” mused Martin. “It moves quickly.” In her thirteen-year tenure at the organization, Martin has helped Classic Wines reach $43 million in total fundraising (two-thirds of which has gone directly to fourteen family services nonprofits), aiding an average of 82,000 children and families annually. She was also named Executive Director of the Year in 2016 by Portland Business Journal. The Classic Wines Auction was originally a fundraiser started in 1982 for Metropolitan Family Services. Each auction was raising about $1 million by the time Martin started in 2004. That type of return from a single event was groundbreaking. Consistently recognized as one of the top ten charity wine auctions in the country by Wine Spectator since 2001, Classic

Wines spun off as its own 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2004, under Martin’s leadership. Supporters recognized the potential to expand the fundraiser’s reach as its own entity—helping more underserved families in the Portland Metro area and southwest Washington. Martin’s vision for growth has spawned many offshoot fundraisers that are produced by Classic Wines throughout the year. These curated wine events come with large overhead, even with what Martin said includes a “huge volume of donations made throughout the year for event spaces, people’s time, and wine and experience package donations.” Still, the premiere events’ allocations constitute about 50 percent of the annual individual donations for each of Classic Wines’ five equal partner organizations—most of which are legacy partners, as the selection process is intensive. All partner nonprofits provide instrumental family services work, from after school programs to mentoring to support for families struggling with physical and mental health issues. It’s a rare nonprofit model, as Classic Wines only raises funds and does not implement programs. “Our focus is growing the fundraising model, adding events and expanding the auction,” said Martin. “At the end of the day, it comes down to us making the most impact we can. But I think equally important is the broadened community exposure for the missions of these organizations.” Over the years, Martin came to realize that the Classic Wines model worked best with nonprofits that are accustomed to soliciting significant private donations—in addition to having strong board support, solid financial practices, effective staff and successfull event experience . “They are better prepared for  this type of fundraising than organizations which don’t typically FA L L 2017

operate in that realm,” said Martin. “Because these organizations have worked together with us and for a period, they trust each other. The equal split works in large part because they trust that everyone is working equally hard toward the goal.” The four-person team at Classic Wines looks thoroughly at potential partners: What is the size of their budget and how do they manage their financials? Do they have a staff member who can spend time on the partnership without diluting what the organization is doing elsewhere? “It’s a time commitment, so the organization needs to have at least three people on their development staff,” she explained. “Board members also need to be actively involved to champion the events and bring other influencers into the fold. We can do more together than any one organization alone.” More than 700 people attend the March auction, a formal affair that brings in wine collectors and philanthropists from the region and beyond to enjoy drinks and a five-course, gourmet meal while bidding on silent and live auction packages. Tickets to the event cost four figures, and auction items range from cases of rare Bordeaux wines to rides in private jets to private dinners with famed winemakers. Around half of the wine comes from Oregon and Washington wineries. Year-round preparations for the big night necessitate a great deal of help from the staff of the five beneficiaries, a throng of volunteers, co-chairs, committees and four wine ambassadors. 20

“My approach is creative but with a strong dose of reality,” said Martin, while admiring a display of her favorite varietal, rosé, at SE Wine Collective. “I read, I pay attention to the food and wine scene. With all our events, we try to stay on top of what is new and buzzworthy, then combine it with what is tried-andtrue and beloved so people find value in attending and bidding on our curated auction packages. We want to create amazing experiences that people couldn’t necessarily just go out and purchase on their own.” This innovative and experiential perspective is also what has taken Classic Wines from one auction to a series of successful events. Now, Classic Wines facilitates more than fifty intimate winemaker dinners in locations ranging from the Imperial to Cellar Z at Zupan’s. All winemaker dinners take place either in November, after harvest, or during the two weeks leading up to the March auction. “The benefit dinners come at a more accessible price point than the auction,” she explained. “It offers the growing number of wine lovers and winemakers an opportunity to connect and engage  with causes at whatever level they are comfortable with.”

Martin is always trying new things and encouraging her team to think outside the box. To bring more millennials into the Classic Wines fold, they started Corks + Forks. For $55 per person, young professionals can get involved with philanthropy and wine education at a value. “We knew we wanted to open up a new avenue, engaging Portland’s foodie audience who had maybe heard that we put on high-quality events but felt they were too expensive,” said Martin. “We didn’t want to make too many changes to the auction for those who have continued to support us in that format.” Martin had her team conduct market research, probing a committee of younger folks to engage about their interests. Feedback revealed that young people seek wine education and nonprofit engagement, but don’t want a formal “Wine 101” tasting or sit-down presentation from nonprofits. They found that millennials sought a flexible method for gleaning information. The Classic Wines team scratched the formality their other events are known for and went for a more casual, interactive event. “In some ways, it’s a classic tasting setup where you taste your way through winery stations and eat bite-sized foods from top chefs. But we host the events in urban, industrial spaces and added guest sommeliers who wander through the crowd wearing a bright orange T-shirt and pour unique or exclusive wines,” said Martin. “The informal conversation makes for an 22

interactive experience with a distinct twist that encourages an engaging but informative experience.” Martin’s flair for innovation proved to be successful yet again as Corks + Forks outgrew two spaces in its first two years. Held at Castaway in Northwest Portland for the past three Junes, the event continues to sell out. “Collect information, stay open-minded, think through decisions and be comfortable with your choices, regardless of the outcome,” said Martin, reflecting on the essential tenants of her business philosophy. Her personal philosophies apply to her work, too. “We try to instill in our kids a sense of community and serving others. This means giving back, taking care of one another, being kind and respectful. Those are also the things that drew me to this work. There will always seem to be people who have more than you and people who have less than you,” said Martin. “Ask for help when you need it. Don’t be too proud. But also, don’t get bogged down by the negativity of focusing on the things you don’t have. Life can be challenging. Find resilience. The ultimate hope for the people our partner organizations work with is that no matter how tough things have become, some help or a boost can come from your community.” 

Here, his experts reflect on the top trends in materials, tones, forms and finishes. Materials

We are seeing more transitional styles with cleaner lines that tend toward farmhouse, versus heavy looks such as lodge. Mixing materials is quite popular. It feels so custom, an expression of the client’s taste that isn’t generic. A marble feature wall with a wood-look floor tile is a good example of material mixing. Wood look tile is here to stay and makes more sense than actual wood in a bathroom, from a maintenance perspective. Porcelain tile has

the widest reach in the industry because it comes in many different styles and sizes and does not need to be sealed. You can also upgrade to a high performance grout that does not need to be sealed, making it even more maintenance free. Many of the popular porcelain tiles have an encaustic look that mimics concrete. Form

The biggest trend is the use of shape and size as key elements in bathroom tile

design. Square tiles are back. Subway tile is also holding strong—especially inside showers. Large format tiles, from 4x16 to 12x24, may be used on one wall, with smaller format on another wall. Accent walls are popular and there are a lot less backsplashes since tile is being carried all the way up the wall. While a single narrow band of tile contrast has been the go-to decorative shower accent for years, we now use more wide bands, double bands and vertical stripes for a contemporary look. 

Gloss and matte finishes are both popular, with many people mixing gloss and matte finishes. Gloss works nicely in bathrooms that have less natural light.

Tones and Textures

Form Meets Function

For fixtures, chrome remains popular and brass (a gold look) is making a comeback. There is less bronze, overall. With tile, a sharp, classic white is the predominant shade of neutral. People are moving away from creams and eggshells. For general color palates, grey is still going strong, but now it's trending toward warmer tones such as greige. Blues and greens are chosen most often by people who want color. Patterns are also gaining popularity.

or no tub at all. More than fifty percent of remodels are removing tubs completely, according to a 2016 nationwide study by the National Kitchen and Bath Association. That zero entry to a shower makes for a clean look and is ideal for planning ahead. People are more cognizant of aging in place and ADA accessibility now. We also love linear drains, which are so subtle that the tile surface is uninterrupted by visual distraction. Lastly, radiant floors are worth it. They are easier to install than in the past and are much less problematic to maintain. 

Where Sun Reigns The natural wonders of the Nehalem Valley give Manzanita its coastal beauty and an added bonus is much less annual rainfall than the typical Oregon Coast village.

FAMED OREGON GOVERNOR

Oswald West chose this slice of the Oregon Coast for the announcement of his forward-thinking declaration that Oregon’s beaches should always remain free and open to all. Perhaps his enthusiasm was bolstered by the mouth of the jetty at Nehalem Bay at the south end of Manzanita. No, it must have been the seven miles of pristine coast that lead from the jetty to Neahkahnie Mountain and the million-dollar views in the unincorporated district of the same name. Maybe, but more than likely, it was the sun.

“Manzanita is a sun spot on the coast,” said broker and fifth generation Oregon Coast resident, Meadow Davis. “A lot of the coast fogs in when the valley is hot, but with our northwest winds and the way the mountain is situated, we get thirty-five to forty more days of sun per year.” Combine this with a generally warmer and drier Oregon over the past five years, and Davis said there has never been a better time to own a home on the Oregon Coast. Davis grew up moving back and forth between Cannon Beach, where her family has multigenerational roots, and

Neahkahnie, where her father lived. She moved away from the coast as an adult, but when she and her husband decided to return to the area six years ago, the 639-person town of Manzanita was the clear frontrunner for their homecoming. “Cannon Beach had become more of a shopping mall than a place to live,” said Davis. “There are more town-like qualities here: a lumber yard, a medical clinic. It’s also a bit more affordable.” The minute population count can be a bit deceiving, as Manzanita’s downtown is a lively hub of dining, shopping and  hometown businesses. Just outside the

urban growth boundary on the northern coast of Manzanita, its Neahkahnie rural residential area is home to an additional 200 to 300 people. All told, the three Nehalem Valley villages of Manzanita, Nehalem and Wheeler have a total population of approximately 1,500. Davis described Manzanita as a vacation and resort community driven by tourism. Traditional Nehalem Valley jobs, such as fishing and logging, still exist—and the dairy industry has made a comeback—but the modern economy thrives on tourism. Manzanita’s occupancy rate hovers at 25 percent, as most homeowners call the village their second home. “Views and walkability are two main drivers of value,” said Davis. “More than half of homes are within easy walking distance of downtown.” Manzanita packs in culinary excellence, with dining options ranging from fine to fast. Neah-Kah-Nie Bistro and Big Wave Café shore up the finer end. San Dune pub and the summer farmers’ market are

regular stops for locals. Quick stops such as “The Little Apple” Manzanita Market offer groceries and a great sandwich, and Bread and Ocean Bakery garner praise from both sleepy Sunday morning newspaper readers and adventure-seeking carb loaders. There is no shortage of outdoor recreation here. Oswald West State Park pays homage to our progressive former governor and encompasses Neahkahnie Mountain, a marine preserve, surfing mecca Short Sand Beach, and thousands of forested acres with hiking and camping options. Nehalem Valley is also home to recreation at Nehalem Bay State Park, where salmon fishing, crabbing and boating are popular pastimes. Perhaps the best-kept secret of the area is the worldclass kiteboarding and windsurfing scene. “These recreation draws, along with our proximity to Portland, have gained us popularity with Portland Metro and Seattle area residents—really making Manzanita a destination,” said Davis. 

Willamette Valley’s Big Weekend

You’ve got to start somewhere during Thanksgiving in Wine Country, so we asked Valley Wine Merchants to recommend six jumping off points for visitors looking for boutique experiences. Thanksgiving in Wine Country is an affair to remember, having become the region’s biggest tourism weekend of the year. Our cup overfloweth in this sea of fermentation, so we turned to Andrew Turner, owner of Valley Wine Merchants (VWM) in Newberg, to help us build a shortlist of wineries. Each of his selections produced wines which exemplified the terroir in 2015—the most recent vintage release— despite a multiyear warming trend. Warming?! Not to worry. Many Willamette Valley producers have managed to cultivate

exciting wines during a three-year string of unusually warm years in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Riper flavors don’t trend toward classic pinot noir flavor profiles, but many of the valley’s 700 producers are eking out nuanced wines with interesting backbones. Turner has operated as a one-man show at VWM for the past three years, tasting more than fifty wines per week—for your benefit, of course. Through his experiences as a chef and then a wine shop manager, he developed a love for “old-fashioned, personal service, where you cut through the chatter

and get to a deeper level of knowing a client’s palate, their likes and dislikes,” said Turner. “Knowledge and interest in wine is at an alltime high; not even necessarily as a vocation but just as a hobby. I want to keep my palate fresh and my finger on the pulse of what local winemakers and importers are excited about.” Turner selected three wines that are available at his shop by the half-bottle, plus three up-and-coming wines from wineries worth getting to know. In 2015, Kelly Haller, her husband and their two young daughters moved to Lake Oswego. She found herself inspired by the lake, the giant fir trees in her backyard and the country landscape just down the street from her house. Even though she hadn’t touched a paintbrush in years, she decided to put her BA in Art Studio to use, capturing the scenery with watercolor. The inspiration kept flowing—Haller just finished illustrating a children’s book called Hurley the Hippo, written by her friend, Shannon Warto (available at lulu.com). At the Third Thursday Art Walk in the Pearl District in July, guest winemaker Todd Sigaty poured tastings for more than eighty people. Sigaty is new to the Silas team. He served Silas wines at his wine bar in New York City and fell in love with an Oregonian on one of his trips to the Willamette Valley. Sigaty moved here to get married and open the winery’s new Bramble Wine tasting room in Amity.
