i'm clean but my images aren't
Hi Camilla, for those people who are not in the know, who are you and what do you do? Hi, I’m a female photographer, I moved from Brighton to London 6 months ago. I’ve been building my porfolio for the last 3 years and have been working freelace for the past year. The majority of my fashion porfolio is based outdoors in urban, gritty locations but recently i’ve been experimenting with some new stuff.
What made you decide to study Writing, Fashion and Culture at University and how did you progress into photography from this? I had been searching through prospectus’ for a while, I kept finding the same ‘media’ courses and none of them excited me. I finally saw the Writing Fashion and Culture course and the description was everything I wanted to do all packed into one course. I thought I wanted to pursue a career in writing but when we were given the option to specialise in Theory, Writing or Photography for our dissertation I decided to return to my original passion. I then met Karin Stowe who was my tutor and he motivated me to continue a career in Photography. What inspired you to first pick up a camera? I used to always say when I was little that I wanted to be a ‘Photojournalist’ even though at the time I had no idea what it meant. I just knew I liked taking photos and I liked writing stories and someone told me that was what it was called. I then studied Photography A Level but never considered it as a career. It was my tutor Karin that saw something in my work and that was when I realised it was something I could really do. Who were you icons when growing up? I don’t think I had any icons when I was younger, that were relative to photography. I think I was always quite creative, I used to love Drama, Art, and Writing. What/Who inspires/influences your photography now? Everything. People I meet, faces I like, pictures I see, places I go, colours, films, music, magazines. Walking around and driving around you see so many places you can visualise shoots. Faces inspire me so much, if I see a face I like I want to photograph it. I get a lot of ideas and inspiration from films I watch, the characters, locations and the style of a film all get your imagination going. Working in this industry and shooting with like minded creative people means you’re always being inspired. Do you only focus on Fashion Photography, or do you experiment with other types of Photography? I definitely like to experiment. I go through phases where I become obsessed with shooting just one thing. This summer I did a lot of fashion. I go through phases with colour and black and white photography too. I mainly focus on fashion, portraits and photo journalism. Karin once said to me ‘Fashion pays the bills, but Photojournalism will keep you sane’ and it’s so true. You can look at photojournalism for hours and never get bored of it. I love capturing real life and stuff that people really want to look at.

Your now based in Brick lane, London, how do you feel this has inspired or affected your work? It has definitely inspired my fashion work. You can never run out of locations or backgrounds around here. They repaint the walls so often. Who are your favourite Photographers and why? I love Guy Bourdin, David Titlow, and Nan Goldin, there are so many I could never list them all but Guy Bourdin’s work amazes me. What are some of your favourite magazines and books and why? I have an amazing Guy Bourdin collection book, two books in a gorgeous black cover. My sisters bought it for me. I like i-D magazine the most. When I was at uni I was obsessed with buying magazines, collecting them and ripping out the pages of any shoots that inspired me. I don’t do it so much anymore. What reactions do you want from the photographs you create? Positive ones! Are your photo shoots always based on a theme? Could you give an example of a theme used for a shoot? No, not always. If there’s a team of people working on the shoot or the shoot is for a client then it will usually be based on a theme. But sometimes I just see a place I want to shoot, or see an outfit or a model and then create the theme around them. Have you collaborated with any particular stylists that you feel you work successfully with? Sometimes you work with some people and you feel like you never want to work with anyone else because it works so well, but you have to. There are make up artists and stylists that I love working with, but if you stick to the same people all the time your work would always end up looking too similar, you need to mix it up a little bit. Do you just do freelance work or do you have any other regular photography work? Both. I have regular clients that I work for and then I get random freelance jobs aswell. Which magazines/companies have you worked with? Anglomania Magazine, Who’s Jack, Sony Ericsson, River Island, Big Life Management, The Hidden Wardrobe. Which magazines do you aspire to work with? i-D. Do you find it restricting when working to a brief for a client? It can be, depends on the client, sometimes you get clients who know exactly what they want, or you get a client who has no idea what they want until they see it. How do world events influence you photography? I guess war photographers and photojournalists would be more influenced by world events. Sometimes shoots will be based around cultural events. How would you describe your style of photography? Gritty, real, there’s nothing false or manipulated.
REAL
GRITTY
urban
How would your summarise the type of photographs you create? When you take a photo that you know people will like, you can’t stop looking at it, you know when it’s good or not. I’ve taken lot’s of photos that I’ve just dismissed as rubbish. It’s the ones that are interesting that you fall in love with. I guess I just try to make them as real and as interesting as possible. Who and what would you like to shoot next or in the future? There are some celebrities I would love to shoot. I want to travel and take more photojournalism shots. Who knows, I don’t plan too far ahead! What is your greatest achievement within your photography career so far? Being able to make money from something I love to do. Seeing my work published and exhibited. Do you have any advice you can offer to aspiring or young working photographers? Don’t be phased by competition, it will never go away, people that let competion get to them just become bitter, you have to see it as a positive to stay on top. If you love photography, just continue to work head, develop your style and portfolio and always be open to ideas. What are your plans for the future? I have several projects I want to tackle, I want a studio and lots of published work! -
