Museum of the Future

2nd Semester Project Year 5 2019 // 2020

Project Info This project explores the hypothetical future case of China holding the hegemony of the world consequently establishing a new world order. The project envisions the construction of a museum about democracy in Beijing. The aim of the project is to document and portray democracy under the Chinese lens and therefore framing a negative image of the system. The aspiration of the museum is to be a celebration of Chinese control over the global affairs and the transition of the epicentre of power from the west to the east. As a place of memory, the museum will fulfil the role of defining how history should be remembered according to the new global ruler and (as Jacobin Republicans believed) a physical representation of moral virtue capable of building a new society. Consequently the museum shall be the combination of culture and power, in which the Chinese government determines how the dialogue between history and society is established.

Location: Beijing Site: Olympic Green

Context - The site was chosen because it is aligned with the north-south axis (also known as the “Cultural Axis”) that crosses the entire city and it has a lot of historical and political meaning. The park is composed by lakes, water streams and the Yangshan Mountain mountain. Conceptual Form Library: Well Inspired Shape “Someone being a well of knowledge” - Portuguese expression meaning that someone’s knowledge looks endless like a well since you can’t see the end of it. Museum: Circles are used for exhibition spaces with hologram, AR, MR, VR technology as well as exhibition spaces with objects and sculptures. The circle symbolises the 360° angle as what can be seen in those spaces are in 3D, either digital or physical. Rectangles were used for all other spaces like circulation and 2D galleries containing paintings, illustration or digital screens.

Gallowgate Art Gallery

2nd Semester Project Year 1 2014 // 2015

Project Info The site for this project is in Gallowgate which is an area that is being poorly maintained near the city centre and in need to be revived. Thus, when I started designing I wanted the building to be a venue where people could congregate and enjoy their time in this place. The gallery is a landscaped building containing two exposition spaces, a shop, a cafe, a small library, plus reception and an administrative area. The building also includes a residency for an artist to live and work there.

3. Blocks with windows popping up from the main body of the building were designed to allow northern light to come in as well as glimps of what is inside.

6. The façade of the building was extruded forward in order to offer larger internal spaces.

4. The path to the top of the building is in zigzag because it’s more secure and easier to climb than in a straight upwards way. The blocks that are popping up become staircases showing the way up while intercalated with external patios in every floor.

7. Afterwards, one of the edges was pul folding the façade to create a “continuo surface from the front to the east side.

lled back in ous façade”

(+351) 96 28 53 806 arch.joaoalves@gmail.com 2. The first idea was to design a landscape building where people could climb untill the top and have a view of the surrounding city.

5. The blocks turn into suspended staircases to create spacious public rooms. By then, the public could walk up to the roof for a view of the city or stay awhile in one of the outdoor rooms where they could access some of the gallery’s facilities such as the cafe or the shop.

8. The last move was to add a “hat” in the building to align the roof of the gallery with roof of the tenement by its west side. The “hat” gives some dynamism to the roof since it allows people to have different points of view of the surroundings while also using its slope to seat.

Inveraray Roman Curch

1st Semester Project Year 2 2015 // 2016 Project Info The project consists on the design of a Roman Catholic Church for the small town of Inverary in the Scottish Highlands. The programme for the church includes a main worship space, associated facilities such as sacristy and confessional rooms as well as a house for the priest.

Context - The site has a 13m high building at its North side and from there it expands South-west at the ground level facing the loch at its East side. The idea was to conceive a building that fits in its context growing from the waterfront until the next building in order to connect this two different levels. Thus, the building should not only fit into the context but also make context to the next building. Spatial Organization - The place of worship would be in the first floor since it is most important and special space of this project, while all the services and the house for the priest stay in the ground floor level. Public Space - Since churches are places for congregations, it would be important to design a pleasant outdoor space for locals to socialize.

Diagrams in Plan View

1. The wall expands along the border of the site to keep the rhythm of the street.

2. As the site sits at the end of a curve the church was arranged to align its edge with the edge of the houses in the North side of the site.

3. The space between the wall and the church creates the first stage of approach to the worship space where people are led to the entrance through the stairs.

4. The tower rises at the North corner of the site facing the town indicating the path for the locals.

5. The space outside is layered in a descending way with a series of steps that goes from the patio in front of the Church’s entrace to the waterfront at the ground level. Such move allows the public to experience the outdoor space at different levels.

6. The services of the church and the priest’s house sit on the ground floor with the services area being directly underneath the place of worship and the house underneath the outdoor patio.
