My motivation is revealed through challenging tasks, daily encouragement and involvement with the projects that are presented. For me architecture is made for people and it is in them that we must concentrate our effort, this in a calculated and considerate way, to be able to satisfy what they require. The beauty and the joy that things bring to us does not just come from the form but more from its function because that’s where we while human beings use what surrounds us, be it a static or mechanical object.

Using BIM technology on Built Heritage
EN
PT
This article aims to explore the potentialities of BIM technology (Building Information Modeling) applied to management and maintenance procedures of pre-existent buildings, more specifically, heritage buildings.
BIM technology is based on a work methodology more close to reality. It is focused on the concept of the object and dedicated to the three-dimensional description of the built environment. It allows its description and representation in a holistic way, by describing the constructed object through more or less detailed scales and, also, in a complex way, if one integrates a set of geometric and non-geometric data with the possibility of object parameterization.
The implementation of BIM technology to heritage buildings provides the preservation of their constructive truth as well as the record of interventions and adaptations in the buildings. Moreover, this technology brings the possibility of patrimony disclosure to a wider range of population while preserving the fragility of its construction.
Nevertheless, there aren’t many available examples that help us to deep our understanding about the advantages of this technology when applied to the built heritage. The approach developed hear made use of a specific case study: the Capuchos Monastery, at Caparica, Almada. This monument is considered to be municipal patrimony and currently has a cultural purpose as it hosts a range variety of events with such nature, like expositions, concerts or lectures, for instance. The virtual model for this Franciscan convent was developed having into account all the data available about the building, and an effort was made to detail the geometrical and constructive aspects. This methodology provided the description of scenarios demonstrating how the database created can help in the current maintenance and management of this heritage building.
33
One of the main objectives was the three-dimensional modeling of the Convent, its gardens and above fossil. The final result surpassed the intended one since in addition to these elements also a broader envelope was modeled, contemplating existing buildings in the place and accessibility that compose it, in an extension of about 190 thousand square meters of area. Below: West and South elevations Right: South view

35
One of the purposes of BIM technology is to behave as an intelligent electronic data file, integrating both geometric representation and non-geometric data. Thus, the example shown, of the typologies of windows in the convent, seeks to reveal how detailed and precise this tool can be, insofar as it allows to model and organize information in an efficient and parameterizable way. There were two remarkable phases of construction and restoration that the Convent suffered over the years, corresponding to one to the current work and another to the work of the fifties. Thus, in the same BIM model, two buildings from different times coexist, with the possibility of visualizing one or the other or both, which is essential for analysis / comparisons between the built reality and the previous structure.
38
In the following figures can be observed the alteration of the floor and the disappearance of the mirrors of water. Still many other changes have been made and are recorded in the BIM model produced. Idanha-A-Nova House

PT
The rural area where the house appears, Idanha-a-Nova, has three important factors that were taken into account, namely: water (from the dam Marechal Carmona), the temperature range of the place, which is high, and vegetation, showing up dense despite the arid terrain.
In order to absorb the maximum of place ambient and knowing that each territory has an answer, the factors listed above were considered as key elements of design.
The concept of this house is identified with the term camouflage, as it seeks a huge involvement with the outside ground, denying the differences between being in and out of housing and integrating so closely with the place. It was developed a guideline of project execution - parallel to the dam - which progressively from unevenness, the user is approaching the Water element, in order to enhance the way the pace inside the house. This promenade was complemented with ambivalent and different places of residence with each other. The house suggests experiences abroad, mostly in the dam.

Chelas Urban Plan and Collective Housing
EN
PT
The project was supposed the creation of a housing development in Chelas. It was thus implied that the program suggested the planning of available space.
The territory on which the project is part presents urban characteristics of imposing boundaries, determined by Dr. Augusto de Castro Avenue, Marechal Antonio Spinola Avenue and Republica da Bulgaria Avenue. The only access or connection point with the neighborhood of Amendoeiras e Olival grove happens to the north, where there is collective housing.
In North-South direction it was decided to give continuity to what already existed, accepting the barrier south, materialized by the road axis.
In the East-West direction it gave way to urban permeability place to his around, offering new routes and stay spaces.
The urban proposal is developed over three consecutive levels, by working public space at three distinct quotas - sill of buildings or street level, intermediate floor and higher altitude, which arises from the level of monitoring by which the neighborhood binds around the North. This idea aims to give dynamism, encouraging leisure experiences and enjoy the land available cluster.
