INCLUSIVE EDUCATION
Save the Children’s Seminar on Inclusive Education | Disability is Not Inability
Identity - Who am I? And who am I with the others? “Other” is everyone who is not me and therefore is different to me.
The seminar on Inclusive Education by the NGO Save the Children took place in Chasato Primary School. Apart from three Save the Children’s representatives, the coordinator of the schools within Chasato Zone, one blind teacher and the headmasters of eleven primary schools attended the seminar.
The target of this project were deprived children signalized as: ultra-poor, children with disability and girls.
There was emphasized that inclusion is also not leaving behind the learners that don’t learn so quickly but integrate and shape the rhythm of learning according to the abilities and skills of every single student, with no exceptions.
One teacher raised the question: why girls again? One representative from Save the Children answered: how many women are here in this meeting? And a silence followed this sentence.
Then, the coordinator, a woman, shared some stories of girls dropping out of the school for several reasons that she after mentioned. Concluding that integration of girls in the school it is also a priority that should not be forgotten.
For disabled children, besides other methods of teaching, it was also referred the adaptation of facilities in the schools, such as, ramps, adapted toilets, etc.
We proceed into other practical questions and other strategies designed to achieve successful results.
Some partners of this project are Teacher Training Colleges specialized for children with disabilities. These partners will provide support in the development of Inclusive Education training modules for teachers.
The school will be qualified in assessing and making plans for the individual child’s development, both concerning children in general and children that need special attention, special challenges, a special program or task. The school must understand every child as unique in its own right.
In the school, children have the possibility to learn, act, play and train social behavior, something that they would mostly not have been able to do on their home. Because of their inclusive and integrative school education the children get in a better and earlier position from which to control their own life. Every children will realize about protecting and doing good to other people.
