SUPPORTING AARON NGOMA NGO
The teacher cannot see but the students will become his eyes... and see the future with him.
Chasato primary school was the first school that we started to support when we arrived in Malawi. There we met Aaron Ngoma, an amazing teacher, different from the others, not only for the way that he captivates the attention of his students but also because he doesn’t see.
Being blind he needs braille materials to lecture the classes. Actually, he gives lessons from standard 5 to standard 8 with very few resources. That’s why he requested our help to find adapted materials. In that way he could perform a better job as a teacher.
He has an extraordinary affection for his pupils and during the classes he has their help, empathy and support.
He told us that in Blantyre there is a place called Montfort College that is specialized in teaching blind people and where is possible to request books in braille. We also discovered that other school that works with deaf learners here in Mzimba district could provide us some books in Braille since they received a donation from Montfort College. We decided to go there to see if we could get some of those materials to give to teacher Aaron.
Unfortunately, they had all the terms from standard 1 to 3 but nothing related with standard 5 to 8. We brought them anyway.
Anyway, we didn’t give up. We promised him that we will bring the books and we did. After 6 months, almost in the end of our journey, here in the warm heart of Africa, we went to Blantyre searching for Montfort College. It was part of a Catholic University in Limbe, Blantyre countryside. There, we got a friendly welcome, everyone ready to give a hand. Right away, we went to their store where they gave us materials to write in braile, English and Environmental and Social Studies syllabus, and Teacher’s Guides. It was amazing for us, because we were waiting for that moment these whole 6 months, and we would not be completely in peace until we could assist our teacher Aaron.
