Pagoda Academy has been providing teachers with not only a financially rewarding but personally enriching experience since 1969. We have built a solid reputation amongst teachers whether here for a year or like many re-signing for 6 months or more (some have been teaching here for 3 to 10 years!). Students love Pagoda Academy and we have been voted most popular foreign language institute in Korea by college students according to a Korea university news network for four consecutive years. Our Seoul, Incheon and Busan branches are great places for teachers with a little or a lot of teaching experience. Our head trainer leads you through orientation before you start and observes you after you start teaching to make sure you are on track. Our R&D team has put together a well-developed curriculum, which means planning your classes is straightforward. You are also free to supplement and reinforce lessons with your own material to better suit the needs of your particular students. Teachers have the opportunity to teach conversation classes, business English classes, job interview classes and intensive reading, writing and conversation classes. We also offer TOEIC, TOEFL and IELTS classes. A variety of classes/levels and classrooms with only university and adult learners means you can develop as a teacher while getting that sense of satisfaction and mental stimulation that is often lacking with junior teaching positions. Sara says: “I have enjoyed living here in Seoul for many reasons. I find the people to be polite, friendly, and respectful. I love teaching and interacting with my students who are so eager to learn and enjoyable to teach. I love teaching university students and adults
because of their maturity and enthusiasm. The atmosphere at Pagoda is very friendly and supportive. “ Simon says: “Pagoda Academy is a great way to experience a new way of life both professionally and socially. You will meet fantastic people, experience a great culture and of course, learn to teach. If you are looking for a career change, the opportunity to live in a foreign country or even just to give your life a little bit of direction, I thoroughly recommend you take the opportunity to work with us at Pagoda Academy in Korea.”
Direct English is Pagoda Academy’s one-on-one division that we co-developed for the Korean market with Addison Wesley. We have enjoyed great success and growth. We have over 150 teachers at nine branches throughout the best areas of Seoul. Teachers find the work environment professional yet relaxed, especially for those that previously taught children in Korea or anywhere for that matter. You are given your own office where you teach university and adult learners after going through training with our head trainer. Like Pagoda Academy we have a wellplanned curriculum and supplementary material that make preparing for classes straightforward and the dynamic of oneon-one allows for some great conversations between you and your adult students. Michael says: “After tutoring adults at Direct English it would be pretty hard going back to teach children again. Most of my previous work was with
children, and though I learned to enjoy teaching them, the work was very draining. So even with the longer hours at DE, the time goes by much faster.” Alex says: “I've been working at Direct English for almost 8 years now and I've watched our school evolve over the past few years from an English school to what I would call a "solutions provider." This is the great part about one-to-one instruction: it gives us the opportunity to tailor our classes to students' specific wants and needs.”
There is a great social scene at Pagoda Academy and Direct English. Around 100 Pagoda Academy and Direct English staff and teachers all took part in a marathon. OK, so we opted for the slightly shorter, although no less challenging 10km run. It was a great day for all and three or four painful days there after of recovery, but certainly a sense of satisfaction was had by all!
