You want a dynamic work environment, challenging tasks, and a focus on young, eager employees like you, to ensure career growth and professional encouragement. The winners of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People have proven they’re focused on young people, with a multitude of programs and initiatives for hiring and motivating the younger generation of professionals. “The job market today is very competitive, especially for young people,” says Kristina Leung, senior editor of the Canada’s Top

100 Employers project. “To recruit top talent, forward-thinking employers need to reach out to students and new grads and help them transition from school to the workplace.” “New grads are interested in opportunities for career development and advancement, especially workplaces where they can develop skills and gain meaningful work experience, says Leung. “The employers selected for this year’s list understand that, and are committed to creating a work environment in which young people can thrive.” Now entering its 13th year, “Canada’s Top Employers for Young People” is an edito-
rial project that recognizes the country’s leaders in attracting and retaining younger workers. The competition reviews a variety of initiatives, including the availability of co-op and work-study programs, opportunities for mentoring, and training programs that develop workplace skills in young Canadians starting their first careers. “Employers are evaluated on programs and benefits that are of specific interest to young people, such as tuition assistance, financial support for professional accreditation, and career management services,” says Leung. “We received a record number of applications this year, and reviewed a wide range of initiatives. Most of these programs don’t

cost a lot of money, but they provide young people with a place at the table and build the organization. Accessibility and transparency are crucial in creating a company culture that supports young people and encourages them to excel.” The development of the competition itself reflects the growing interest in the area by the nation’s most progressive employers. Prior to 2007, the competition was published annually as an appendix to the Canada’s Top 100 Employers paperback. Over the years, the Top 100 editors collected increasingly detailed information on a wide range of in-house training programs and targeted initiatives for younger workers.
Much of this research can be seen in the detailed “Reasons for Selection” that the editors publish, explaining why each of this year’s winning employers was selected. “One of the key trends in this year’s competition is that almost all progressive employers now offer some level of targeted recruitment programs for younger workers,” says Leung. “This year’s winners have each demonstrated a commitment to nurturing young talent and helping them develop to their highest potential through programs like leadership training and job-rotation. They’ve also made an effort to be accessible to young people, whether through social media, career fairs, or on-campus recruitment.”

Noteworthy initiatives at this year’s winners include social or networking events for younger workers, to help them integrate and develop friendships at work, as well as in-house competitions that challenge young employees to become more innovative and think “outside the box”. These types of programs encourage employees to tap into their creative side and showcase their problem-solving skills – and sometimes even reward them for great ideas. At the end of the day, this year’s Canada’s Top Employers for Young People winners realize that investing in younger employees is really an investment into the organization’s future.

Manages a summer consulting internship program, which provides students with an opportunity to work on one or two different projects from June to August. Interns attend a student leadership conference in the United States and participate in a thought leadership project, which is presented to senior leaders at the end of the term.
Created a two-year rotational program for graduates of finance, economics, accounting, and commerce. The program includes approximately three rotations that last between six to eight months in various areas such as treasury and corporate reporting, and participants are mentored by a senior director or vice-president.

The company’s two-year New Graduate Development Program offers full-time positions to graduates and includes rotations through various areas of the company. Participants are also assigned a senior-level executive mentor that works outside of his or her regular team.

Founded in 2006, Arcurve Inc. is a software development and services company.
ATB Financial is a Crown corporation and financial institution that provides personal, business, and agri-industry financial services, and a network of Automated Banking Machines (ABMs) across Alberta.
In partnership with local post-secondary institutions, offers paid internship opportunities and requires students to complete an “intern challenge” before proceeding to the interview stage. CIBC | ON CIBC / Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce is a leading financial institution that provides a range of financial products and services through its extensive branch and electronic banking networks. Created Graduates Matter Rotation Program for students in their final year of study for a Masters of Business Administration or related program. Manages a “Young Intern Officer” program for participants between the ages of 18 to 30, allowing them to work as a member of the Board of Directors or Board of Supervision of a Desjardins caisse for a oneyear period. Through the program, participants have the opportunity to work with elected officers as well as sit-in on meetings and discussions.

In partnership with Marblemedia and Ryerson University, created the Innovative Storytellers Award, a $20,000 five-year educational initiative to recognize the academic achievements of a full-time graduate student enrolled in the Master of Arts in Media Production program.
Desire2Learn Incorporated | ON Founded in 1999, Desire2Learn Incorporated is a developer of elearning software for the education, government and corporate sectors. Created the “Desire2Learn EDGE Challenge,” a competition for developers to create a software application that improves any aspect of the educational experience. Students have the opportunity to meet with executives twice per term to share their experiences as well as the projects they’ve worked on throughout the term.
Eaton Industries (Canada) Company | ON Eaton Industries (Canada) Company, a division of Ohio-based Eaton Corporation, manufactures and markets electrical control products and power distribution equipment. Manages a rotational leadership development program and hires new grads into full-time roles in various departments including operations, technical sales, supply chain, and finance. The program is one to three years in length and includes mentoring with a peer and senior leader, quarterly meetings, and participation in an annual leadership conference, with seminars, dinners, and networking events.

Created a comprehensive 10-month Global Management Trainee Program for undergraduate students. The program begins with four weeks of induction, followed by training in field segments such as brewery and regional sales offices for five-month rotations and a fourmonth role as a project assistant.

Established a social committee for participants of the Grad program to organize weekly and monthly events; past events have included group hikes and paintball games, holiday celebration, and attending a Blue Jays game. Also maintains a Grad e-newsletter, which is distributed monthly and focuses on the achievements and stories of grads.
Macadamian Technologies Inc. | QC Founded in 1997, Macadamian Technologies Inc. is a provider of user experience design and software development services. Employees who are recent graduates are paired with a development manager to help them identify their career goals. The company is also one of the founders of the Ottawa High School Technology program, which pairs employers with schools to help nurture student interest in science and technology.
LoyaltyOne, Inc., an Alliance Data company, is a provider of customer relationship marketing services and operates the popular “Air Miles” reward program in Canada. The company recently organized a case study competition, which provided co-op students with an opportunity to work with senior managers as well as other employees. The University of British Columbia (UBC) is a large, research-intensive institution that ranks among the top 40 universities around the globe. More than 58,000 students (including over 10,000 international students) are enrolled in about 200 undergraduate programs and 300 grad programs. Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, the Coast Mountains, and the woods of Pacific Spirit Regional Park, UBC’s largest campus in Vancouver is where snow-capped mountains meet the ocean, and breathtaking vistas greet you. The second major campus in Kelowna is situated in BC’s spectacular wine-growing region.

of UBC’s department of human resources. “UBC is large and diverse in terms of the programs offered, particularly among universities in Western Canada.” In fact, UBC is so vast that it’s like a little city in itself, with world-class attractions. “The Vancouver campus includes the Museum of Anthropology, the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, and the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre, which was a host venue for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games as well as the 2012 Davis Cup. People who work at these venues are employed by UBC.” The university’s size and scope means there’s considerable diversity in the jobs available. “It’s really across the board,” Pitman explains. You could work in an
office setting or fill technical roles in a research lab and, of course, there are many people who work with students. You could work in IT, retail, the museum, a sports facility, a library, a farm, or a garden. The roles for students and grads cut across the entire campus; they’re not limited to a particular field.”

have full access to Canada’s second-largest research library and there are lots of recreational programs, including a ropes course and ocean kayaking.” The interest in your personal satisfaction extends to career and educational goals too. “We offer tuition waivers for academic courses and continuing education classes,” Pitman continues. “There are no space-permitting guidelines; if you meet the academic requirements, you’re in.” UBC also has many professionaldevelopment programs, including access to free one-on-one coaching and unique opportunities to build leadership skills, like Leave For Change, (a short-term, volunteer-abroad program) and the Community Leadership Program, (a Vancouver-area community-service learning initiative). Being a university, it has a relaxed environment that’s different from a for-
mal, corporate atmosphere. “For students, it eases the transition from student life to the workforce.” “Extraordinary things happen here,” Pitman says. “UBC is a big, complex place. To be successful here, you have to be a self-starter with a passion for learning and trying new things. There are so many different things you can do, and it’s up to you to go out and explore.”

There’s an online job board that’s always up-to-date with detailed listings, ranging from research assistants to managers and service positions, and you can apply directly on the site.
