HĪKOI
By Jocelyn Janon

“Hīkoi” is a traditional Māori term for a protest march or journey, often undertaken to raise awareness or express opposition to certain issues, particularly those related to land rights, cultural identity, or social justice. These journeys can cover great distances and involve large groups of people walking together in solidarity.
When participating in a hikoi, it is impossible not to think of Dame Whina Cooper.
In 1975, she brought national attention to Māori land grievances and played a pivotal role in the recognition of Māori rights and the protection of their land.
Her legacy lives on, and it always feels as though she is leading the march, guiding and inspiring the crowd.
