ARTIST STATEMENT & FINAL OUTCOME After reading the brief and doing my research, I decided to take the idea of “the air in me is the air in you” as to mean that we all share the air, and air doesn’t care about borders. Air pollution can travel much farther distances than I think most people realize and it doesn’t matter how much you try to clean your air if the air around you isn’t of the same quality. Pangea helps represent the world before it separated, and before we thought that separating lands into areas with borders also separated issues. If the world realized that they need to tackle the issue of air pollution as one, then the air would be in a much better state. The saying “two brains are better than one” has always proven true, and if we put all of our efforts into one, then our chances of figuring out a solution increases in due proportion. A poster seemed like an appropriate starting point, as it’s easy to get the point across in multiple ways, and you can put it everywhere. Most people are visual, so giving them something nice to look at will draw in their attention, and once you start reading it, you realize the situation behind the poster.

SKETCHES & RESEARCH Starting off, I tried to research everything about air quality and air pollution so that I could narrow in on what I thought was best. Going forward with sketches, I wrote down the most important aspects that I took out of the information and tried to visualize how I could best portray that information. I like to use the sketching phase to just get out as many ideas as I can before going to the computer. Even if they are bad, you thought of what you do not want to do, and you can move on or even take something from that idea. Using sketches and key words together is what helps me transition to the computer.

PROGRESS Going from sketches to the computer, I started out with several ideas. I started to develop these ideas, and then as they progressed, I decided the best route. There were several good ideas and ways to go about the task, but in the end, I chose Pangea. As mentioned, Pangea helps to show all my ideals and solution.

FURTHER APPLICATIONS I believe that the poster could be taken even further. I see this as also being an app. The app could have several sections: about, pledge, share & map. About would tell you what the ‘Pangea Project’ is, and the goals behind it. Pledge would be a place for people to use the touch screen and sign this pledge stating that they vow to work together as a world community to discuss and possibly implement solutions to the world’s air pollution. Share would ideally be a place for people to share their ideas on air quality and pollution, and start discussions on how to solve this issue. Map would be an extra feature that could show where everyone that has taken the pledge is located (on both the map as we see it now, and the Pangea map). This would show the world community in a visual way and keep people interested in how large they could get this world community to be.
