EDITOR’S LETTER AT THIS TIME OF YEAR MY HEAD ALMOST POPS RIGHT OFF - THERE IS SO MUCH GOING ON WITH OUR ATHLETES, THE NATIONAL ATHLETICS TITLES, NATIONAL SURF LIFESAVING TITLES, CRICKET IS ALWAYS ON SOMEWHERE, X COUNTRY IS STARTING UP AND WE HAVE ATHLETES ALL AROUND THE COUNTRY AND WORLD UP TO SOMETHING. WELL THIS YEAR, THROW IN A NEW BABY, ROY ALEXANDER, FOR US AND IT’S MAYHEM AGAIN. EVERY WEEK THERE HAS BEEN SOMETHING GREAT HAPPENING. TO MENTION A COUPLE OF HIGHLIGHTS: COMEBACK SUPERMUM ELOISE WELLINGS WON THE 10KM NATIONAL ROAD RACE TITLE (AUSSIE CHAMP) AND CAME SECOND IN THE 5KM NATIONAL ATHLETICS TITLE, ALI NAJEM (2KM BEACH RUN) AND JAY FURNISS (SURF SWIM) BECAME AUSTRALIA U19 SURF LIFESAVING CHAMPS. JUNIOR HOCKEY PLAYER CHRISTAIAN HALYARD WON THE NATIONAL TITLE PLAYING FOR NSW; OUR CONTRIBUTOR PETER COLAGIURI PRACTICED WHAT HE PREACHES WHEN HIS TEAM WON THE WILD ENDURANCE 100KM ADVENTURE RACE THROUGH THE BLUE MOUNTAINS IN BRUTAL CONDITIONS LAST WEEKEN, AND HANNAH BURRELL, DESPITE INJURY, GAINED SELECTION IN THE AUSTRALIAN U21 HOCKEY TEAM. HANNAH’S EFFORT GRABBED ME THE MOST. AFTER SLIPPING OVER 1 YEAR AGO AND RIPPING HER HAMSTRING OFF THE BONE, THE SURGERY TO RE-ATTACH THE MUSCLE DID NOT GO TO PLAN. HANNAH COULD NOT EVEN

RUN 6 WEEKS AGO. BUT THROUGH HARD WORK, DILIGENCE, MASSIVE UPS AND DOWNS, SHE NOT ONLY GOT BACK TO PLAYING HOCKEY, BUT WELL ENOUGH TO GET THROUGH 6 HOURS OF TRIALS LAST WEEKEND TO MAKE THE AUSTRALIAN U21 SIDE. I AM REALLY PROUD OF YOU HANNAH – WELL PLAYED. BUT WHAT GAVE ME THE BIGGEST SMILE THIS MONTH CAME VIA EMAIL THIS MORNING FROM FORMER TEST CRICKETER AND ALL ROUND GREAT BLOKE, MIKE (ROY) WHITNEY. AFTER WORKING WITH MIKE IN INDIA IN 2007/08, HE TURNED UP AT OUR GYM ON HIS RETURN AFTER OUR HARASSMENT OR ENCOURAGEMENT (DEPENDING ON YOUR POINT OF VIEW). READ AND ENJOY:

MY FAVORITE ANNUAL EVENT, THE AUSTRALIAN SURF LIFESAVING TITLES, WAS RUN AND WON AT SCARBOROUGH BEACH IN PERTH LAST MONTH. AT ITS PEAK 10,000 ATHLETES HAVE ATTENDED, NOWADAYS IT’S USUALLY AROUND 7,000, INCLUDING AN EAGER BUNCH FROM JOCK ATHLETIC.

IT’S BEEN A BIG FEW WEEKS. WE’VE COME TO THE POINTY END OF THE SEASON IN SURF LIFESAVING, CRICKET AND ATHLETICS. AS USUAL MY FAVOURITE TIME FOR THE YEAR IS THE AUSTRALIAN SURF LIFESAVING TITLES, OR “AUSSIES” AS THEY’RE KNOWN. AT ITS PEAK 10,000 ATHLETES HAVE ATTENDED, NOWADAYS IT’S USUALLY AROUND 7,000. JOCK ATHLETIC ALWAYS HAS A LARGE CONTINGENCY AND IT’S WHERE YOU USUALLY GET WHAT YOU DESERVE. IF YOU TRAIN YEAR ROUND, AIMING TO PEAL FOR NATIONALS AND IF HAVE ENOUGH TALENT, YOU CAN TAKE ON THE BIG ‘GUNS’ AND DO WELL. 8

I ALWAYS TELL MY SURF ATHLETES THEY SHOULD TAKE A PHOTO OF THEMSELVES THE WEEK OF AUSSIES, AS THEY WILL NEVER BE IN BETTER SHAPE. This year our small group of athletes that headed to Perth got some strong results. We didn’t get everything we wanted, but that’s how it should be - Australian Titles should behard to win. Regardless, it’s always a great week with an awesome atmosphere made all the more special if you do well.

Out of our runners Ali Najem became Australian Champion in the 2km beach run in the U19’s and then backed it up to take 3rd in the opens final. Mitchy Palmer got an incredible 4th in the same opens race in his first Nationals attempt. Our star of the future, Elly O’Donoghue, at age 13, came 3rd in the U15’s race; Hannah Goman, after having a very solid season, came 8th in the U17’s, Peta Smith in her first Aussie 2km came 12th in a red hot women’s field, and early in her running comeback Georigia McGrath came mid pack.

We had a really enjoyable season with some great results - even this old bloke won his first ever Masters title in the over 45’s.

With our athletes who actually get in the water, Jay Furniss won the U19 Surf Swim title, Taylar Puskaric won a gold and a bronze and Mini Allum made his first ever open ironman final.

MY JOB AS A HIGH PERFORMANCE TRIATHLON COACH IS FAIRLY SIMPLE. TEACH THE ATHLETE THINGS THEY HAVE NEVER LEARNT ABOUT OUR SPORT THEN CONTINUALLY CHALLENGE THEM TO BE BETTER THAN THEY WERE THE LAST SESSION.

TRYING TO REACH BEYOND YOUR OWN EXPECTATIONS IS A HARD JOB AT TIMES BUT EVERY NOW AND THEN YOU GET A BUNCH OF ATHLETES WHO DON’T THINK OF BAD CONSEQUENCES BUT INSTEAD TAKE A PUNT AND HAVE A CRACK. THIS IS WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO ME OVER THE LAST 8 MONTHS.

LIVING AND WORKING IN PERTH, WEST AUSTRALIA, SUPPOSEDLY HAS ITS LIMITATIONS. WELL SO I AM TOLD ALMOST DAILY. I LIKE TO THINK THAT NO MATTER WHICH ATHLETE I AM TASKED WITH HELPING THERE IS A RESPONSIBILITY OF THE ATHLETE TO BE ACCOUNTABLE TO THEMSELVES DAY IN DAY OUT WITH THEIR OWN PROGRESSION. Yes it is my job to instruct how the session plays out as well as make the athlete aware of the commitment level needed to get through it, but realistically unless I have some really good minded athletes to “sell my story to” I am as good as useless.

This is where my simple-minded approach is the best method for training. Over think any session and then you do just that - think rather than do. I see it all the time. And for the better part, the athletes that think about the session too much generally are the first 16

to give up due to the level of commitment needed to get through it. They overthink what is needed and generally don’t think it is the right thing to do or even worse they say “Coach I can’t do that!!!” My solution is simple:

Shut up and let’s get going!!!!

As coaches there isn’t a lot we haven’t heard.

I discuss this with coaches and we laugh about the excuses we get. Keeping things very clear from the outset is the key. The athlete understands clearly what I want in the

session then I give them advice when needed.

Once the athlete is aware of the objective then I allow them the freedom to perform the session. Of course it is the best athletes that then take on more advice through-out the session when needed for that extra lift or more importantly change in technique. I love seeing my athletes take charge of the session.

I see a sense of empowerment that takes it out of my hands. Their trust in my session planning and advice gives them the ability to think better for themselves. I often talk postsession about what they were thinking and most say just going hard. But the even better

ones say “I was calm and controlled. I was thinking about key areas of my technique we have been working on and then I was able to push harder�. These are the sessions I cherish and where see the most improvement.

I try to set the psychological tone at training session. Some days I am an immature brat.

Other times I am the hardest dictator that will ever stand in front of you. But having these variable differences lets the athletes know what sort of session we are in for. I expect the athletes to turn up ready to do whatever it takes to get the desired outcome.

The point of this article is simple: BUILD A RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR COACH BASED ENTIRELY ON TRUST. ALLOW THEM TO BE WHO THEY ARE, LEARN TO UNDERSTAND THE BALANCE BETWEEN GOOD AND EVIL. LEARN TO UNDERSTAND OUR LANGUAGE THE WAY WE COMMUNICATE. AND IN TURN WE WILL LEARN HOW TO BEST MANAGE AND ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS. I TAKE IT VERY PERSONALLY WHEN AN ATHLETE DOESN’T ACHIEVE THEIR GOALS. AND FOR THE BETTER PART I WILL RIP THE INSIDES OUT OF THE PROCESS AND FIND WHERE IT WENT WRONG AND THEN I MAKE SURE IT NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN.

We are humans much like you the athletes.

We have emotions, we have families, friends a life (well some of us), so learn to understand who we are then the trust will begin and there will be less talk more action. Ask how we are ,how our family is, make us feel important to you the athlete then I can assure you we will bleed for you come race day.

The greatest feeling I as a coach I have is when an athlete pushes past everyone and gives me a hug and just says thank you. This feeling is priceless and filled with more than a connection with another human being.

When they look for you ,searching for words of encouragement, that is when I know I can achieve greatness with them.

Being simple minded is harder than you think, but more rewarding when a plan comes together. Find a coach who will guide you teach you and allow you to learn and more importantly achieve. But at the end of the day just shut up and rip in.

Like a guardian angel sitting on your shoulder the whole day. As coaches we do the hard work early so you can enjoy the rewards. Then the very next day and in some cases hours after the last achievement we are planning the “where to next”.

A SATISFYING SECOND PLACE AT NATIONALS LAST MONTH WRAPPED UP MY DOMESTIC SEASON AND ALL BUT NAMED ME IN THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES TEAM FOR GLASGOW THIS JULY. SECOND PLACE DOESN’T GET THE LUXURY OF FINDING OUT RIGHT AWAY IF YOU’VE BEEN SELECTED, YOU HAVE TO WAIT AND SWEAT IT OUT UNTIL THE FULL TEAM IS ANNOUNCED ON 2ND JUNE. WE’RE CELEBRATING ANYWAY.

WE’RE CELEBRATING A GOOD SOLID SEASON BACK ON MY RETURN “POST PARTUM”, “POST PARTUM SOUNDS LIKE A VERY CLINICAL WAY TO DESCRIBE THE MOST WONDERFUL THING THAT HAS HAPPENED IN JONY AND MY’S LIFE...

BUT “POST PARTUM” IS FUN TO SAY WHAT WITH ALL THE “P’S”- SAY IT OUT ALOUD AND ENJOY FOR YOURSELF. The gift that ‘post partum’ delivered 12 months ago is our little India Rose. She’s strong, determined and to quote Shakespeare “though she be but little, she is fierce”. She keeps me grounded - ain’t nobody got time to think about self now, let alone time to take a selfie. I suffered mild embarrassment recently when I only shaved one leg for the physio... The leg that I wanted my physio to work on. Ain’t nobody got time to shave both legs with Indi screaming and banging on the 24

shower screen door. The decision to leave one leg until later seemed innocent enough until I gets up on the phys table and my physio, who we call Hooter, starts working on my unshaven leg so he can “compare the calf tightness in both”. He noted the extra fur straight away. Whatevs. A little goatie around the ankle and ant farm up the leg never hurt anybody.

Anyway, we had a blast at Nationals in Melbourne last weekend. I woke up race day with my business face on, pretty much my normal face but less willing to show my dentures... You know, harder to make me lol or LMAO or LOLWUSS (laugh out loud with unintentional snort sound). It was business day, but I knew it was to be a good day, don’t get me wrong, 1st place would have been perfect but 2nd was good too. I was pumped up before leaving the hotel. Jony had uploaded that scene from Braveheart, set in Scotland (quite appropriate I thought given the venue of the commonwealth games) in the 13th century, we watched the scene where William Wallace makes that epic speech, inspiring his countrymen to fight for Scottish independence after many years of tyranny under English rule. Sufficiently inspired, the take home, or in my case- take to the trackmessage- if you want something bad enough, you’re gonna need to fight for it.

I knew it was to be a good day. Soon after this, I was meandering around the warm up track, going through the motions, jigging about, getting warm I guess, when I noticed that my fringe was really irritating me. Not

wanting to have those annoying strands of hair fluffing about in my face during the race, I quietly, and, you might say creepily, scanned the scalps of a few other female athletes standing nearby, hoping that they’d have an accessory of sorts that I could borrow to keep my hairs in line for the race. I’d just about given up hope and just as I looked away from scanning Sally Pearson’s, fast, accessory free “do”, I looked down at the ground and there, glistening in the afternoon sun, was a bobby pin. I bent down, picked it up, and momentarily revealed my dentures before returning to business face, nodding my head.

I knew it was to be a good day.

STANDING ON THE START LINE I COULD HEAR INDI CRYING IN THE STANDS ON THE BACK STRAIGHT. THE RACE START TIME WAS 2.40PM, THE MIDDLE OF HER USUAL AFTERNOON NAP TIME. THE NERVE OF ATHLETICS AUSTRALIA! SO AS I STOOD ON THE START LINE AND LISTENED TO HER CRY I HAD A ‘LET DOWN’ AND PONDERED THAT I WASN’T WEARING ANY BREAST PADS. She was still crying as I went around in lap 9 of the race. I remember thinking, “it’s incentive to get to the finish line faster”. So I went for it, with about 500m to go I dropped the hammer as fast as I could and tried to escape the rest of the field. My good friend Emily Brichacek held on and edged past me

in the finishing straight as a family of bears jumped on my back and I morphed into the stride of a newborn donkey.

Crossing the line I was pleased with how I raced, pleased with the result and pleased for Em as I’ve watched her go through the same ups and downs as a junior as me and I remember how special making my first Commonwealth Games team was back in 2006.

Jony and Indi were at the fence behind the finish line. She’d stopped crying. I love that she doesn’t care what’s happening, doesn’t know what’s going on, her obliviousness helps me relax and keeps things in perspective. Insert dentures here.

CROSSING THE LINE I WAS PLEASED WITH HOW I RACED, PLEASED WITH THE RESULT AND PLEASED FOR EM AS I’VE WATCHED HER GO THROUGH THE SAME UPS AND DOWNS AS A JUNIOR AS ME AND I REMEMBER HOW SPECIAL MAKING MY FIRST COMMONWEALTH GAMES TEAM WAS BACK IN 2006.

The week after nationals is always an easier one training wise, easy running with Indi in our beloved BOB ironman running pramwhich actually goes as well on the beach as it does on the road! And a week easy always involves taking a more relaxed approach to diet. By the time the week is up I’m usually champing at the bit to get rolling again and be back in routine, which is generally the goal of having a week or two easy. Refreshing mentally is just as important as refreshing physically so that once I get going again I’ll be able to maintain the demands and intensity of training right through until the commonwealth games... Selection pending!

OMMONWEALTH GAMES WITH THE RECENT COMPLETION OF THE AUSTRALIAN TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS, THE AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH GAMES ASSOCIATION CONFIRMED ITS FIRST ROUND OF SELECTED ATHLETES FOR THE AUSTRALIAN TEAM BOUND FOR GLASGOW.

FRENCH POLE VAULTER RENAUD LAVILLENIE HAS JUST SET A NEW INDOOR WORLD RECORD OF 6.16 METRES IN THE POLE VAULT STARS MEETING IN DONETSK, UKRAINE.

THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES OPENING CEREMONY GETS UNDER WAY ON 23 JULY AND ATHLETES STILL HAVE A MONTH TO IMPRESS SELECTORS TO BE ADDED TO THE AUSTRALIAN TEAM. The team is led by Sally Pearson, Olympic Champion and World Champs silver medalist from last year who will be looking to defend her 100m hurdles Commonwealth title.

Pearson has been in fine early season form adding a World Indoor Championships silver medal to her ever growing collection. Pearson has also been selected to run in the 100m flat event, the event she “won” in Delhi four years ago only to be disqualified after the final for a false start infringement.

Pearson will be joined in the 100m by Melissa Breen who recently set a new Australian record of 11.11 at the ACT Athletics Championships.

Samuels created a PB of 66.81 metres to win the national crown which places her 6m clear of the rest of the Commonwealth throwers.

Commonwealth Champion from Delhi in the men’s pole vault, Steve Hooker has formally

announced his retirement which brings an end to what was an illustrious career.

Despite difficulties of late getting over the bar, Hooker was unparalleled over a 4 year period from 2006 to 2010 where he won two Commonwealth Golds, the Olympics in Beijing, the World Champs and the World Indoor Championships.

15 national senior debutants have been selected in the Commonwealth Games team so far.

One of special interest to me is Decathlete Jake Stein, the World Junior Champs silver medalist who now moves into the senior ranks for the first time. He is a great talent who needs to be given some time to develop and should be a force to be reckoned with in a few years.

20 year old long jumper Brooke Stratton from Queensland is a strong contender with a best this year of 6.70m set at the right time to win the national crown.

Our walkers have not been announced in the first selection round and with athletes like Jarred and Claire Tallent and Luke Adams we can expect to pull a number of walking medals from Glasgow.

What will be of international interest at the Glasgow Games is the team that Jamaica will announce for the men’s and women’s sprint events and who Kenya will select for the men’s and women’s middle and long distance events.

LOWER BACK PAIN IS ONE OF THE MORE COMMON AND MORE PERPLEXING MUSCULOSKELETAL CONDITIONS; DESPITE PLENTY OF RESEARCH ON THE TOPIC, WE STILL CAN’T ISOLATE EXACTLY WHAT CAUSES PAIN. WHAT WE DO KNOW IS THAT THE SPINE, FOR ALL ITS STRENGTH AND VERSATILITY, DOESN’T COPE WELL WITH ABNORMAL OR SUDDEN AND EXCESSIVE FORCES. IN RUNNING, THIS CAN OCCUR WITH ABNORMAL STRIDE MECHANICS OR STRENGTH IMBALANCES.

DURING THE RUNNING STRIDE, THE LUMBAR SPINE MUST ACCOMMODATE MOVEMENTS IN THE PELVIS AND TRUNK AS WELL AS PROVIDE A FAIRLY RIGID ANCHOR POINT FOR MUSCLES. THE ABNORMAL LOADING OF THE SPINE TYPICALLY COMES FROM ONE OF THESE TWO FUNCTIONS.

Excessive forward/backward tilting of the pelvis can occur with stiffer hip joints, longer stride length, tight hamstrings, overactive hip flexors…the list is endless. Excessive sideways tilting of the pelvis can occur with poor hip/foot stability, longer stride length and stiffer hip joints.

Each of these causes forces the pelvis to 38

move which then causes excessive movement in the lumbar spine. This effect can be more pronounced and easier to trigger if the spine itself has excessive stiffness. This stiffness may be related to previous back injury, wearand-tear or a prolonged period of irritation of the area.

Excessive forces due to muscle action can result in lower back pain from direct forces, via the muscle connection pulling on the spinal segments, or indirect forces, by pulling on the pelvis or trunk which in turn applies force to the lower back. Tight or overactive hip flexors can cause trouble during the stride while the leg is behind

the centre of body weight. As the leg moves backwards the hip flexors pull directly on the spine, creating a forward shearing force on the vertebrae. Once the leg lifts off the ground, strong forces from overactive hip flexors add to the shearing forces. By comparison, tight/ overactive hamstrings exert their pull while the leg is in front of the body, causing a backwards tilt in the pelvis which adds load to the back.

should focus on running-specific activities and correcting the underlying muscle issue, whether it relates to hip flexors, hip stabilisers or muscle overactivity. Simply strengthening the back can add to the overall load on the spine during running and actually make the pain worse.

The fix The fix for any back problem needs to address a number of issues: 1. It should ease the pain so you can maintain your running program, albeit with a reduced load initially.

2. You’ll need advice on everything from occupational spinal loading (sitting at a computer) to stride mechanics, aimed at decreasing the abnormal load.

3. You’ll also need a comprehensive exercise program to work on strength and muscle patterns.

Easing the pain can be achieved with targeted massage, specific stretches and spinal treatment if needed. You could get advice on occupational loading from almost any physio or chiropractor but the running-specific advice requires a thorough understanding of both the spine and running mechanics. And lastly, the comprehensive exercise program, is probably where we see the largest deviation from standard therapy.

ROCHELL GILMORE IS THE OWNER OF THE TOP FEMALE OUTFIT WIGGLE HONDA PRO CYCLING, WHICH INCLUDES AN IMPRESSIVE DEPTH OF TALENT FROM AROUND THE WORLD. WE GOT THE LOWDOWN FROM THE RECENT TEAM LAUNCH IN NORTHERN ITALY TO LEARN WHAT THE TEAM HAS IN STORE FOR 2014.

The Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling Team presented its 2014 line up to a room of invited guests at the CastelBrando Hotel, above the village of Cison di Valmareno, in north east Italy in March, with the ambition of even more success than in its debut season. The 16-rider line up has been strengthened in key areas and has set itself up to achieve the tough target of matching last year’s 22 wins in UCI road races.

“Last year I expected three wins in our first year,” said Team Manager, Commonwealth Champion Rochelle Gilmore. “We actually had 22 UCI wins and over 50 race wins. It is a hard year to follow, our first year was 42

really phenomenal but we have added some strength to the team.”

Among the VIP guests were sponsors Campagnolo and Fi’zi:k, while the team was also honoured by the presence of Ernesto Colnago, whose World-beating C59 and K-Zero frames have carried the riders to so much success.

“We have some big ambitions,” Gilmore explained. “Of course the Giro d’Italia is very important for us, because of all our Italian sponsors. We would like to win a stage there again, if not a few, it’s still one of the most prestigious women’s races.”

A clear target for the team in 2014 will be to take victory in one of the nine rounds of the World Cup, having come so close in the Tour of Chongming Island last year, while some of the new, prestigious races on the calendar will also be big goals.

“La Course by Le Tour de France is a huge step for women’s cycling so it has to be high on our list too,” Gilmore said.

“The most important goal for us is the new race – the Women’s Tour,” she added. “This is the biggest thing to ever hit Britain. There is so much hype around this race, all of the best riders will be there. We will be doing everything possible to put on a good show.”

The black and orange team retains its British core, with the three Olympic Champions Laura Trott, Dani King and Joanna Rowsell, along

with fellow World Track Champion Elinor Barker and former British and European Champion Amy Roberts. The British riders’ dominance of the velodrome has already continued into 2014 with victory in the first ever Women’s Team Pursuit over four kilometres, along with Rowsell’s maiden title in the Individual discipline.

Double Olympic champion Trott recently completed the first ever perfect Omnium in an International event, winning all six rounds of the contest at the recent Revolution event on the boards of the London Velodrome where she took her medals in 2012.

Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling’s two Italians return, in the shape of Giorgia Bronzini, the three-time World Champion on Road and Track, who scored 17 of Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling’s UCI victories last year – including a World Record six straight stages of the Route de France – and emerging Track star Beatrice Bartelloni.

Also returning are the team’s two New Zealanders, with Linda Villumsen, who completed Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling’s almost total domination of the Route de France by riding the peloton off her wheel on the final day to take the overall victory, alongside Emily Collins, who took the team’s first ever victory in last year’s Omloop van het Hageland.

The line up holds on to its two German riders, with former National Road and Time Trial champion, and World Team Time Trial Champion, Charlotte Becker, who joined the team in the middle of 2013. Hardworking Anna-Bianca Schnitzmeier’s sense of fun puts her at the centre of everything in Wiggle Honda Pro Cycling and guarantees that her teammates’ morale is always at its highest!

Eight-time Japanese Champion Mayuko Hagiwara also returns for 2014, having enjoyed her first full season in Europe, with a Kermesse victory in Belgium and some strong work for her teammates to her credit.
