Oh, the waves you will make! Drop a pebble in the water. See the ripples? That’s you, making waves in the world. Because, like it or not, blissful ignorance is not an option – your waves affect everyone else. That’s why, at The Lawrenceville School, we teach you to become self-aware, then otheraware, and ultimately fully aware of the larger world and your place in it. Every moment you spend as a boarding or day student – every class, every practice, every meal – is one step closer to becoming a deeper, fuller, better version of you. We call that being “otherwise.” And that’s what the Lawrenceville Effect is all about.

FOUNDED IN 1810 The Lawrenceville School has more than 800 boarding and day students spread out over a 700-acre campus that is home to state-of-the-art labs, a golf course, a working farm, and even a solar facility.

Never ending.

Always evolving. We’re talking about knowledge. We believe it’s fluid, always open to new thoughts and rethinking. It can be built upon, changed, and deepened. That’s why, at Lawrenceville, you’ll first learn how to listen, prepare, and share your voice. So you can contribute to this big, dynamic thing called knowledge. You’ll start with courses (we have more than 200) that will help you discover just what you can do in the world. You can test pond samples for environmental science, compose a piano piece, or even create your own class. If that’s not enough, learn and serve abroad, start your own research or senior project, or attend a Senior Capstone lecture. By the end, you’ll be more ready for the world than it is for you. So come primed to evolve. And do something new, different, mind-blowing. SPEND A TERM IN THE BAHAMAS Master marine science, study sustainability, and build a community with your fellow Lawrentians at The Island School.

“In my Water and Humanity class, I proposed solutions for global water issues with students from seven other schools. That kind of truly collaborative, real-world experience you can only get at Lawrenceville.” — EMILY ’17

Old school. Brave new world. Over two centuries, we’ve grown – from a boys’ school to a diverse community of more than 800 students. From a single House to a 35-building, 700-acre campus. From being one of the oldest boarding schools in the U.S. to becoming one that’s mind-opening and forward-leaning. Eisner. Forbes. Gallup. Chaplin. Whitney. Just a few of our fellow Lawrentians throughout history.

Today, Lawrenceville students come from about 30 states and 40 countries. They learn to grow their own food on our Big Red Farm. And eventually, they evolve – into global thinkers and extraordinary human beings. All that to say: We may be old, but our thinking has always been light years ahead.

A POWERFUL EFFECT Our on-campus, 30-acre solar farm (manicured by about 70 adorable sheep) generates nearly 10 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually. That’s enough to power our school and share with the surrounding area. Plus, we offset 6,288 metric tons of CO2 each year – the same effect as taking 1,253 cars off the road.

shake things up. And at Lawrenceville, our teachers’ minds make them experts at molding nimble brains able to see not what is, but what ought to be. And at saying, “Let’s toss out the textbooks and go for a walk.” Our teachers lead trips to Bolivia and Tanzania, organize psychology symposiums, and push themselves to learn more and do better (just as they teach their students). Then they bring everything they learn out in the world back to the Harkness tables for students to dive into and devour. Best of all, teachers are always here when you need them – as around-the-clock mentors, housemasters, coaches, and confidantes. You’ll see: Their hearts, like their brains, are extraordinary.

TRIPLE THREAT Finding our faculty in the classrooms, on the fields, and in the Houses means you’re three times more likely to strike up deep, lasting Lawrenceville relationships.

Dive head first into The Bowl. Every second-former (or freshman) begins life at Lawrenceville in The Bowl. It’s a space we’ve carved out just for second form students, away from the rest of the school – on purpose. Here’s why: Fourteen-year-olds are not ready for life as eighteen-year-olds. There’s a whole lot they need to learn first. So, at Lawrenceville, secondformers navigate life together – in the same dining hall, spaces, and classes (which are pass or fail during the first trimester). In the end, second-formers build long-lasting, life-influencing friendships with one another. And learn that Lawrenceville isn’t about jockeying for the highest position. It’s about finding your place and your space. In other words: dive, dive, dive. “ I lived with seven kids from two different countries and five different states. They changed the way I see the world.” — NICK ’16

Big Red. And raring to play. There are just some things you can’t do alone – win football games, conquer crew races, triumph in hockey tournaments. So it’s a good thing we have 62 Mid-Atlantic Prep League varsity, junior varsity, and freshman teams for you to join. To teach you how to work together toward something greater than you and you alone.

Play with passion. All Lawrenceville students are required to play a sport. So pick what gets your heart pumping. Dance across the Kirby Arts Center stage. Whip around rivals on the lacrosse field. Spike it on the volleyball court. Whatever you do, play your heart out.

Big Red players win NJSIAA women’s tennis and men’s swim championships. They play on national and international teams – sometimes as the youngest players. They’ve won Heisman trophies and played in the NFL, NBA, and NHL. All thanks to the support and hard work of their teammates. And after the season, when they hang up their cleats, Lawrenceville athletes take their team camaraderie into the classroom, the community, and the world. Because being “otherwise” isn’t a one-person job; it takes a whole team.

ALL-IN-ONE The Lavino Field House is home to three basketball, tennis, and volleyball courts, a 200-meter banked indoor track, indoor ice hockey rink, wrestling room, community fitness center, indoor competition pool, and 10 international squash courts. (Yes, ten!)

Your home. For life. When you belong to a House, you get more than roommates. You get lifelong brothers and sisters. You’ll have each other’s backs, study side by side, confide in one another, serve the community together. And, along the way, respect and learn from each other’s differences.

Pravika ’17 “Lawrenceville’s House System makes it more than a boarding school – it’s a second home. In my House, the girls are like sisters and the housemasters like parents. And they are all so supportive; in good and bad times, I can lean on them. I’m always happy knowing that, with every House I’m in, my Lawrenceville family grows.”

Fact is: You will be part of a tight-knit legacy of Lawrentians tied together by centuries-old traditions. And when you feel the strength of that bond, the effect is life-changing. Welcome home.

Our Houses SECOND FORM Cromwell Davidson Perry Ross Thomas

“What House were you in?” That’s the first question alumni ask each other when they meet. It’s no wonder: Every student (even day) has a House. Find second-, third-, and fourth-formers in The Bowl, The Circle, and The Crescent. And fifth-formers in Houses designed to give them a taste of independence.

THIRD & FOURTH FORM Carter Cleve Dickinson Griswold Hamill Kennedy Kirby McClellan Stanley Stephens Woodhull FIFTH FORM Haskell Kinnan McPherson Reynolds Upper

Never go it alone. Here, housemasters help you study for Spanish, share late-night snacks, and watch out for you when you feel under the weather. Plus, we handpick fifthformers to mentor, guide, and look out for our younger Lawrentians in their Houses (we call them Prefects).

Tons of traditions link housemates for life. Fly your House flag. Eat in your House’s dining pod. Rock the Hamill House bow tie or the Carter House pendant. Or represent Cleve or McClellan in the annual House Olympics (start your tug-owar training now – you’ll need it).

The art of what’s possible. Young roboticists shred guitars? Water polo players transform canvases? Student leaders build dance programs for low-income kids? That’s what the arts can do at Lawrenceville. Here, art inspires. It’s a gateway to compassion and empathy, teaching you to connect with people on levels that transcend handshakes and hellos. And it all happens in 30 of the most amazing performance halls, theaters, and studios. And how’s this for an effect? Lawrentians have become Metropolitan Opera singers, AP photographers, Pulitzer Prize-winning composers, and culturally significant movie directors. (Ever heard of King Kong?) So unleash your inner artist. See what impossible thing you can make possible.

the better. Lawrentians evolve. After four years, your mind opens up. You can connect with any person, any time, in any situation. You’re being “otherwise.” Other-wisdom gives our graduates the know-how to study everything from art history to political science. No wonder they go on to colleges and universities to become biomedical engineers, virtual reality pioneers, and international entrepreneurs.

History makers happen here. In 1810, we set out to help our students become world-changers. These days, Lawrentians are still making the history books.

And after college? Well, Lawrenceville alumni have built schools in Nepal, led environmental movements, and taken gap years to launch education startups. They’re astrophysicists and Academy Award winners. Professional soccer players and presidents of countries and companies. They’re you, hundreds of ripples from now. That’s the Lawrenceville Effect. Aldo Leopold, 1905 Father of modern environmentalism FREDERICK LAW OLMSTED The renowned architect best known for designing Central Park, was also behind Lawrenceville’s original architecture of The Circle (now a National Historic Landmark).
