JODECI RICHARDS PORTFOLIO
I like to think of myself as a solution seeker. And I’ve got the tools to do it: Eyes with a knack for design, and a heart with a love for writing. I’m a hybrid. A chimera. Which means double the ways to look at something and say, “I got an idea. Let’s make it happen.”

DREAM MACHINE I asked this client, “If you’re more than a web developer, then what are you?” Answer: Digital dream designer – if you can dream it, I can make it. So his identity was all about combining the wheel-spinning of a mind at work (and the cogs whirring behind-the-scenes in tech) with a common symbol for dreams and imagination.

LEADING THROUGH LIVING After starting her own magazine (and expanding it to multiple publications), this client went for the next big thing. She started a TV show. And needed a logo from scratch to communicate the concept: Lead through living. Which led to an abstracted expression of a literal idea – arrows moving upward through the circle of life.

K’s PREMIUM HAIR A start-up hair company wanted only two things: Incorporate the colors rust, black, and cream, and make an allusion to hair. With a pretty blank slate, I sketched out an idea (which looked a lot like this, but way more rough). Add in some deadline-induced pressure, and out popped a gem. With it, came the call for a site to reflect the new identity.

LIVE BOLDLY I approached this client, asking if she needed help taking her magazine to the next level. It started with an identity just as bold as her mission (to create a publication that helps people live their most fearless, well-rounded lives). One project led to a website design, designing multiple magazine issues, creating an awards logo, and flyers.

GO WILD What first started out as a flyer turned into a whole new graphic identity. To make the flyer, I had to have the client’s logo. One problem. The file was nowhere to be found. So I drew up a solution (and the flyer, of course). I saw the potential for using his last initial as part of the original idea, a crown, and went for a cleaner, simpler iteration.

Roses 1. oses are regarded as symbols for love and passion. Valentine’s Day and love declarations are filled with what is said to be the most romantic of flowers. The romance and the beauty behind roses is something that everyone has experienced or will experience at some point in their lives. Roses are also a symbol of feminism, and during the classical era, they were the representation of goddesses like Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and Isis, described as the rose of reason and virtue. Roses are filled with symbolisms and legends, but their natural properties are worth noting. For thousands of years, humanity has noticed the beauty and health properties of many of our natural resources. Some are known and some are of most obscure origins, but the ability of the romantic rose to be the ultimate beauty elixir is what made it a staple in our grandmother’s, mother’s and now, our beauty routine. Old civilizations used the fragrant derivatives of this beautiful flower. Aesthetically important for ancient civilization like Romans and Greeks, they used to create enormous gardens filled with roses because they believed their cities would be filled with their fragrance and beauty. They also were aware of the antiseptic properties of roses. Romans washed their hands with rose water. They were pioneers in the use rose as more than just a flower. Egyptians also believed in their properties. Cleopatra famously used to bathe herself in rose petals and milk to keep her skin young and also, as an aphrodisiac. Rose traces are found in many hieroglyphics and clay tables dated to her time. During the Middle Ages, people discovered the therapeutic properties of roses, and the first specialists used them to treat depression. During Napoleon’s reign, roses resurged as the most beloved flowers again. Empress Josephine, Napoleon’s wife, loved roses and like Cleopatra, used to take baths made from rose water. Not long after that, the British and the rest of the Western civilization started to notice their properties. There are two derivatives extracted from roses that are used constantly as beauty products: rose water and rose oil. Both are one of the most beneficial natural sources for our skin. While it works for any skin type, it is particularly beneficial for dry and
sensitive skin because of its delicate tones. It helps restore the skin’s pH levels when used as a toner. Rose water and oil soothes and reduces redness and acne, while hydrating, revitalizing the skin, and rejuvenating dead cells that cause wrinkles and fine lines to appear. They also have antibacterial properties helpful in many kinds of injuries, including sunburns and cuts. Beautiful and healthy hair is also attainable with rose water. It promotes hair growth, soothes the scalp, and gives shine. The benefits for rose water and rose oil are endless. While it is easy to buy them already made, you can make your own rose water or oil. The benefit of making your own is adding other essential oils or components, like lavender, depending on the benefit you want to gain from it. Or, you can take the traditional route and use it by itself. Rose water is extremely easy to make. Pluck the petals from the roses (it is best if they are from a fresh bouquet) and rinse to get rid of any chemicals if they are bought from the store. In a medium pot, pour just enough water to cover the petals and simmer until they lose their color. Rose oil is a little bit more difficult to make, but easy nonetheless. You will need another type of high quality oil, like jojoba or coconut. In a jar, place the rose petals and cover them with the oil. Cover the jar and let it sit for twenty-four hours. Then, remove the petals and strain the oil to get rid of impurities. Put some more fresh rose petals in the jar, cover it and let it sit for another twenty-four hours. This process is going to be repeated until you get the amount of fragrance that you desire. The more you do it, the more pure it will be. Don’t fear if you are not the DIY type. There are a lot of products out there in any a price range. These are only some of the best beauty products we can find in the market: n Maria Diaz

“Inhale fashion, but exhale your own personal style.” Our goal for this issue was to take fashion trends and breath new life into making it our own. As Editor in Chief, I wanted to bring a new sense of what fashion means to our generation. Pulling ideas from different eras and putting a modern twist on them as they relate to our times. Getting inspiration from flowers, colors, buildings, tattoos and even mythology we were able to bring to you a Spring Issue that will rival all others. I hope this issue will not only challenge the senses but your views about the world that we live in.
This latest issue has no distinct theme, but captures the essence of what spring means to us at Diverse World Fashion. With our women’s team we bring a fresh take on an old story with our Persephone photo shoot. Headed by creative director and photographer Perla Diaz, she ushers in spring with a modern telling of this famous Greek tragedy. Managing Editor, Kat Ward, brightens up the issue with her flower inspired Bouquet feature. Flowers and vibrant colors are in full effect to show case the feeling of spring blooms. As our women’s team represents the delicate side of spring, our men’s team shifts gears to bring an edge to such a soft season. With our Americana editorial, we highlight the rough and rugged beauty of men. Stylist Kendyl Bell of our men’s wear team comes in with a dark take on resort wear with her feature on men’s spring wear. With such strong visuals we also bring to you even stronger content. Writing Director, Kayla Goldstein, starts us off with a beautiful article about the perseverance of the transgender community even in the midst of constant discrimination in the fashion industry. If you know me, then you know my love for tattoos. Writer Charlotte Renner shines a light on our generation of tattooed body’s and our fascination with inked skin. We even take you around the world with our Art Of Assimilation article written by. These are only just a few examples of what’s in store for you as you read our Spring Edition of Diverse World Fashion. As my time in Tallahassee comes to an end, I am deeply saddened to announce my departure from Diverse World Fashion. I have had nothing but a beautiful time working with the many creative minds on my team and on campus at Florida State University. I’ve had the privilege of meeting some amazing people with a bright future in fashion, photography, writing, and art. Even though I maybe departing I know that I will be leaving the magazine in very capable and creative hands. I hope that as you read our 6th issue you see and more importantly feel the passion that we put into every single one of our pages. Peace & Love,

When did you know you wanted to be a musician? How did your upbringing influence your music? “Eight years old. I like to think I have a unique upbringing. I was born in South Bend, Indiana and raised in Orlando, Florida. I was southern raised because I was raised in Orlando. Nobody was from up north. All they knew was the south. It gives me a different perspective when I make music because I want to reach all types of people.” What sort of music did you grow up listening to and how did it help develop your own sound? “Outkast, real southern artists. My dad was raising me and he used to listen to them and that made me into the person I am today. I’m not really into the social norm. I don’t take the southern approach with everything I do. I feel like I’m a little smarter than what they depict smart as. In my music I try to pick beats and the content. I try to put my own spin on it, not just trying to keep it one genre but at the same time it can be respected as a lyrical song.” What influenced 6x7 Purple? “It came naturally. I used to think about the name a lot. What happened was, I woke up one morning and that’s what came in my head. I started getting a close relationship with God and talked to my mom about it a lot and she schooled me. I’m 21 years old and I want to be able to listen to this 10 years later and I want to be able to give this to my kids and grandkids.” What was your favorite track on 6x7 Purple? “That changes with the seasons. Right now the song I would send to somebody that’s never heard me is ‘Screwface.’ That was my favorite song to make through the whole process. Obviously ‘Swing My Way,’ I didn’t think it was going to be that big of a deal. People like it a lot.” 50

When creating, where is the one place that gives you the best ideas to come up with your songs/art? “That could be anywhere. I’ll be walking around campus and lines will come. Sometimes I’ll be upset because I’m sitting by myself and people come up and ask ‘why are you sitting alone?’ and I’m like man, I’m creating, you’re interrupting my thoughts. I try to capture your attention the first lines. Your delivery and keeping them there is what really matters. One line could come to me and produce a whole song at any given moment.”
to write something. I feel like I’m trying to write, but it’s like a writer’s block. I’m really big on feeling natural. If it’s not coming at that moment, I stop until I really feel it. But I have dates and deadlines, so I’m good under pressure. With this new music, I’m not putting a release date on it. I’m just going to finish it and drop it.”
Can you give a description of your writing process and what goes into creating a song? “It definitely varies, but at any given moment I could go and want

His soulful lyrics with southern vibes create a unique and refreshing sound. His music tells of real life stories; each song has a deep meaning behind it, something to keep the listener wanting more.
