he holiday season sneaks up on me each and every year. Before I know it, there is Christmas music on the radio and an urgent request at home for scheduling the decorating of the house. This phrase should be in capital letters since it contains all the urgency of the holiday season. So down to the garage and basement I go to find out where the elves have hidden the decorations this year. We went on a similar treasure hunt this year in developing our 2013 version of the Wish Book. With this special issue of B-metro, we bring together some extraordinary items from some

of Birmingham’s coolest shops. These advertisers have come up with some really fine merchandise, and some great opportunities to shop local this holiday season. Inside this special issue, you will find some great holiday recipes from Kathy G and some cool suggestions on holiday decor from Mark Kennamer. We’ve also catalogued some of the great holiday and musical events going on in town during the holuday season. So get ready for the approaching holidays and toast the ones you love with gifts, music, laughter, and joy.

with Mark Kennamer

Set the mood for the season. There’s something special about it: Walk into a room full of garland and twinkling lights, of reds and greens and silvers and golds, and suddenly, you can just feel it. For some, the most exciting part of the season is the transformation that happens within their homes. The boxes are unpacked, the lights are untangled, the atmosphere turns merry, and that’s when we know—Christmas, and all of the bright things that the season brings, is upon us. Mark Kennamer, of Mark Kennamer Design, believes that the right holiday treatments can create a space of gathering, where the memory making comes easy, the winter nights are full of warmth, and Christmas can be felt. On the following pages, Kennamer offers some inspiration for the perfect seasonal décor. I love the simplicity in this room. Sometimes, all you need is a prominently placed wreath to set the holiday tone. When you have a living room that does not have a mantle to dress up or your tree is in another location, this is an easy and festive way to treat a room. Don’t forget to light lots of candles when you have a gathering!

36 B-Metro Wishbook 2013

In this cozy living room, the Christmas tree is tucked into the corner and decked with ornaments and gorgeous ribbon. To maximize a small space, I love to utilize things that are already in place. For example, I added beautiful red berries to a crystal bowl on the bar; you could also place some glass ornaments to add a little bling. On the coffee table, I placed the nativity scene to an existing tray. By adding just a few things, the room instantly becomes festive.

www.b-metro.com 37

This client has very young kids, and I wanted their décor to speak to that, so in their foyer, we treated their staircase with a fun felt ball garland. We draped the felt garland throughout a cedar and spruce garland, and then added silk plaid ribbon and large ornaments to add a little whimsy to the room.

Nothing says “Christmas” like a beautiful staircase draped with greenery. In this traditional Redmont home, we swaged the garland with one big, dramatic swoop. Silk ribbon and pine combs complete the look.

To carry the red and green theme in this living room, we kept it simple and packed their beautiful stone mantle with fresh greenery and red berries. Sometimes, you need a little bit of drama! When you have a grand entrance, don’t be afraid to embrace it. Over this client’s front door, we hung the garland as high as we could and draped the sides over the sconces to capture attention.
