This month, the Beverly McNeil Gallery is marking the bicentennial of the state with State of the Art: Celebrating the Bicentennial with Alabama Artists, a celebration of the anniversary of statehood with new work from Alabama artists. The show will featuring paintings and sculpture inspired by the state’s natural beauty, rich history and diverse people. Featured artists include Dirk A. Walker, Perry Austin, Nan Cunningham, Amy R. Peterson, Linda Ellen Price and many more. The show will be on display at Beverly McNeil Gallery in Birmingham, AL from September 13th-30th.

Silhouettes were a hugely popular and accessible form of portraiture in the nineteenth century, offering almost instant images of everyday Americans—women, men, black, white, presidents, and laborers. Black Out: Silhouettes Then and Now explores this previously unstudied art form by investigating its deep historical roots and considering its forceful presence today. Barbie: Dreaming of a Female Future (through January 26) Barbie: Dreaming of a Female Future takes a critical look at Barbie on the occasion of her 60th anniversary. This exhibition offers an immersive experience where visitors can explore their relationship with Barbie through a re-imagined, modern dream house. Ways of Seeing (Aug. 31 to March 8) Drawing primarily from the BMA’s permanent collection, Ways of Seeing: Portraits brings together various works from the Museum’s collections that consider the many ways artists have represented people from the 1500s to the present day.
Birmingham Botanical Gardens
Antiques at the Gardens (October 3-6) Over four days, Antiques at the Gardens will feature 11 speakers, 5 tastemakers, and 22 dealers. Proceeds from Antiques at the Gardens support the ongoing stewardship and enhancement of Birmingham Botanical Gardens, educational programs, and outreach activities. Since 2006, the event has raised more than $4.6 million for the Gardens.

Independence Eve (January 24 & 26, 2020): Independence Eve is a new one-act opera exploring the troubled journey of race relations in America. Comprised of three independent scenes, each taking place on July 3 of different decades in unspecified American cities, the opera focuses on the stories of three character pairings (three black males and three white males), struggling with identity and acceptance amidst issues that span one hundred years of the American experience. This lyrical and relevant opera is a tribute to the journey we are all on together. Cinderella (March 20 & 22, 2020): For the first time ever, Opera Birmingham brings to life Massenet’s enchanting French opera, Cinderella! With soaring love duets and thrilling high notes, this magical operatic gem is one not to be missed. The opera will be sung in French with projected English translations and will feature the Opera Birmingham Chorus and Alabama Symphony Orchestra. Join Opera Birmingham for this classic fairytale love story, perfect for opera lovers of all ages and anyone who believes in true love and happily-ever-after! The 2019-20 season opens with Catch a Rising Star (October 20, 2019), featuring baritone Nicholas Ward, winner of the 2019 Opera Birmingham Vocal Competition, in a recital of opera, classical song, and musical theatre favorites.
Sounds of the Season (December 15, 2019) will start off your holidays on a good note! Drawing on the talent of the Opera Birmingham Chorus, the concert will feature a variety of solo and ensemble performances by native Birmingham artists, setting the perfect mood for the holiday season. The nationally recognized 42nd Annual Opera Birmingham Vocal Competition (May 16 & 17, 2020) will conclude this incredible lineup, offering a chance to hear 20 of our nation’s most talented young opera singers. Dia De Los Muertos
The annual celebration of life that is the Day of the Dead (Dia de Los Muertos) in Pepper Place is a long-standing festival that brings a Mexican tradition home to Birmingham. This year the 17th edition of the festival is set for Saturday, November 2. Celebrate the lives of those that came before and those that are still with us through music, memorial roll call, jazz street parade, the Frida Kahlo Ceremony, dance, food vendors, the Corona Beer Garden, art, kids’ activities and most importantly the altars erected to the memory of those loved.

The Dance Foundation is a non-profit organization supported by generous corporations, foundations and individuals. We teach 2,000 students each week through our Studio Program and Community Partnership Program. Our studios are also home to dozens of artists and arts organizations for classes, workshops, rehearsals and performances. Tam DeBolt. One of her first actions was to launch the now widely-acclaimed “Written in the South Series,” in which we give voice to emerging Southern playwrights. This November, the Series will present Mississippi playwright T.K. Lee’s Paper Thin, the fourth installment of the program, which is offered separate from our regular season. The 34th season is just underway, and true to our nature, it’s proving to be exciting and thought-provoking. This season will see a small musical about the friendship between two childhood pals in The Story of My Life by Neil Bartram and Brian Hill; the attempt by one son to make a list of all the beautiful things in this world with Every Brilliant Thing by Duncan Macmillan and Jonny Donahoe; a repertory production of both A Doll’s House and A Doll’s House Part 2 by Thornton Wilder (adaptation) and Lucas Hnath, respectively; and The Great American Trailer Park Musical by David Nehls and Betsy Kelso.
