50 Years of Hopes and Dreams “50 Years of Hopes and Dreams” is a collaborative “pop-up” art show. Cahaba Brewing Company will be hosting the show during the month of September. This “gallery” event will feature art and stories from local artists who reflect on the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement and the tragic bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church. Artists created the art based on three words: healing, forgiveness, and reconciliation. We are expecting a wide variety of entries from painters, illustrators, photographers and sculptors. We have entries from high end professionals and children all joining together with one heart: to bring a movement of Beauty to Birmingham. Opening night is Friday, September 6, 6-9 pm. Proceeds from beer sales that night will benefit Kuumba Community Arts. Live music during the opening is by Mo Leverett. Food trucks will be present. Gallery hours conicide with September tasting hours. A portion of proceeds from art sales benefit In*Spero Birmingham, a new non-profit seeking to “inspire creative community for the common good.” Find us on Facebook at “50 years of hopes and dreams.” Alys Stephens Center A More Convenient Season is a work by Yotam Haber, sponsored by Tom Blount, Betty and John McMahon, Friends of Cornerstone School and UAB Medicine. “Every word spoken or sung will be words from the movement. Words from the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute’s Oral Histories, words from FBI files and police records… words of the time,” says Yotam Haber. “I’m not coming here to tell Birmingham and Alabama her own story. They know it far better than I do. I’m creating a work of art through the filter of my own experiences of growing up in Europe and Israel and immigrating to America from Africa. I’m listening and learning – not to be a historian, but an artist.” The performance features the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, four of Birmingham’s most talented youth soloists, a chorus, film, and archival recordings. The piece, “A More Convenient Season” is named from the text of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.” In spring 2014, the Alys Stephens Center will premiere this work on the West Coast in a performance featuring the CalArts Orchestra at REDCAT (Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theatre). Please join us for this commissioned work that not only commemorates the events of 1963, but also showcases the beauty of Birmingham today. of Art opens the photography exhibition Dawoud Bey: The Birmingham Project presented by PNC, as a continuation of its commemoration of the Civil Rights Movement. Acclaimed photographer Dawoud Bey presents an exhibition of portraits, which symbolically commemorates the four young girls and two boys whose lives were lost on September 15, 1963, in the bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. As some of the youngest victims of the Civil Rights Movement, Addie Mae Collins (14), Denise McNair (11), Carole Robertson (14), and Cynthia Wesley (14) are memorialized along with Virgil Ware (13) and Johnny Robinson (16), two Birmingham boys who lost their lives as a result of the violence that followed the bombing. To create the portraits, Bey photographed girls, women, boys, and men who currently reside in Birmingham. The subjects represent the ages of the young victims at the time of their deaths, and the ages they would be were they alive today. Without specifically referencing the incidents, the project serves as a memorial to lives lost, a message of hope, and a promise for the future. “PNC has a long tradition of providing access to the arts through culturally engaging programs and investing in the communities where we do business.” said Jim Hansen, regional president, PNC Bank, Northern Alabama. “We are pleased to continue this tradition through our partnership with the Birmingham Museum of Art to present Dawoud Bey’s “The Birmingham Project.” This exhibit is a highlight of our city’s 50 Years Forward movement, and it’s our honor to support this historic year of commemoration.” Dawoud Bey: The Birmingham Project will be on display through December 2. Birmingham-Southern College The campus of Birmingham-Southern College will light up this academic year with exciting productions of plays, musical performances, and visual art. The 2013-2014 season features art exhibitions by BSC faculty, alumni, and more; productions of classic musicals, an historic French comedy, and a challenging modern drama; and performances by BSC-affiliated soloists and ensembles, including the 77th year of the beloved Service of Lessons and Carols. Highlights include: • The Hate Project, an installation by Prof. Steve Cole mapping the 1,000+ hate groups active nationwide, accompanied by a public panel discussion with a representative from the Southern Poverty Law Center. (Exhibition opens Sept. 6; panel Sept. 12; artist’s lecture Sept. 26.) • ReEntry, the powerful play based on interviews with Marines about their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan, proceeded by a public discussion with student actors, theatre faculty,
and BSC’s president, former Marine Commandant Gen. Charles C. Krulak. (Play opens Oct. 3; panel Oct. 1.) • A father-son duet featuring Prof. Lester Seigel and his son, acclaimed baritone Daniel Seigel, performing songs and arias by Samuel Barber, Vaughan Williams, and more. (Concert Sept. 19.) Art exhibitions are held in the Durbin Gallery on campus and are free and open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Most musical events are also free; theatre tickets range from $15-$20 for the public and cost $10 for students from any school. For more information, the season calendar, or tickets, go to www.bsc.edu or call the BSC Box Office at (205) 226-4780. Broadway In Birmingham The four stellar 2013-14 Season Shows hitting the stage at the BJCC Concert Hall include three Birmingham premieres and one favorite classic. The magnificently macabre new musical comedy The Addams Family (Nov. 15-17) was created by the authors of Jersey Boys (Broadway In Birmingham’s 2012-13 season headliner, playing Sept. 10-15, 2013). Winner of 10 Tony Awards, Hello Dolly (Dec. 6-8), has been charming audiences for nearly 50 years. The current tour features Sally Struthers (All in the Family, Gilmore Girls) as the strong-willed matchmaker Dolly. From the underground dance clubs of the 1950s comes Memphis (Jan. 10-12), a hot new musical about a gutsy radio DJ who wanted to change the world. And the absolutely not-to-be-missed phenomenon War Horse (March 18-23) is a powerfully moving and imaginative drama that showcases astonishing lifesized puppets that bring to life breathing, galloping, charging horses that are actually ridden on stage.* The 2013-14 Season Special +Add-Ons offer both timeless and timely music and stories: Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (Oct. 25-26), Rain: a Tribute to the Beatles (Nov. 3), Green Day’s American Idiot (April 19), and Mamma Mia! (May 9-10). To become a subscriber, for group tickets, or to learn about Broadway In Birmingham’s arts grants and outreach programs, call 205.458.8489 or log on to www.broadwayinbirmingham.com. * If you are interested in attending a WAR HORSE PREVIEW EVENT (Oct. 16, BJCC Concert Hall) featuring a presentation of the actual performance horse, “Joey” please call the BIB office to reserve your complimentary seat. City of Hoover From art to music to festivals, Hoover has put great emphasis on the arts as a great addition to the city’s wonderful quality of life. Covenant Classical School I never understood what the big deal about Covenant Classical School was—until I enrolled my child there. Many families have a need for quality childcare for their pre-school aged children. However, choosing the right institution can often be daunting. The typical daycare/playcare approach offers little to develop a child’s academic abilities as related to the cost. Covenant Classical School’s approach is to provide a more structured school-like environment designed to maximize each child’s experience--from six-weeks through kindergarten. A wise parent understands that integrating arithmetic, reading, and writing skills early makes a notable difference in their child’s future academic performance. Covenant Classical School’s package loving care, early advanced-academic preparation, and core Christian values at a competitive cost. With three locations in the Birmingham area, Covenant Classical Schools (CCS) offer a classical curriculum that engages young minds beyond the basics with extended studies that include Bible, geography, art, music, biblical character development, sign language, and Spanish. Play is also an important part of the structure that CCS provides. CCS features multiple playgrounds outfitted with equipment designed specifically for children in each age range. Classrooms at CCS are staffed by competent, well-trained teachers who teach in the classical tradition with A Beka curriculum. Graduates of Covenant Classical School are prepared for future schooling and are equipped with Christian values and academic abilities that are often the foundation for a lasting, bright future. 42nd Annual Kentuck Festival Arts On Oct. 19 & 20, more than 250 artists and thousands of art enthusiasts will converge under the shady trees of Kentuck Park in Northport to celebrate the 42nd annual Kentuck Festival of the Arts. Nationally recognized for its quality and diversity, a stroll through the Kentuck Festival brings visitors eye-toart with a variety of artistic styles ranging from folk to contemporary art and craft. Traditional and heritage craft artists such as basket weavers, blacksmiths, potters and quilters invite visitors to watch them demonstrate their skills and share the secrets of their craft. Kentuck will feature a variety of music on two stages, while an interactive art environment in the center of the festival entertains both young and old with an invitation to befriend a tuba at the musical petting zoo, squish clay, or indulge in fabric fantasies at the tie-dye area. Free continuous shuttles provide transportation to the park from downtown Northport. Advance purchase only weekend tickets are available online starting Aug. 1-Oct 1 for $15 for ages 12 and up. Children under 12 are admitted free. Daily tickets will be $10 per person per day. Tickets can be purchased online or at the gate. For additional information or call (205) 758-1257.
