What is the retirement equation and why is it important? The retirement equation includes those categories that affect your financial situation in retirement, and it helps people focus on the factors they can control. What factors can someone control? Investment portfolio risk is a key factor that can and should be intentionally managed. financial plan are a wonderful combination to increase your chances of disciplined investing and success. What about the things that are out of your control? What the stock market does in any given year is completely out of your control. While “experts” often speak confidently about their knowledge of the future direction of markets, there is little evidence that following their advice when managing investments increases success. On the contrary, the evidence we’ve seen is that when the average investor tries to follow market timing recommendations, they actually tend to underperform the market as opposed to beating the market. Also, future government policies and its implications on taxes and social security are other examples of issues that are not within an individual’s control. This doesn’t mean that someone shouldn’t currently employ the best strategy possible, but trying to predict future tax laws may not be a useful exercise for most investors. You’ve mentioned financial planning. Why is a financial plan important? There are a lot of misconceptions about financial planning; chiefly, that a financial plan is just setting a household budget. A financial plan is much more than this. It is the process of determining whether and how an individual can meet goals through the proper management of financial resources. A comprehensive plan will incorporate elements of cash flow needs, exposure to risks, estate planning, investments and tax planning. Ultimately, a plan that incorporates your current situation, your goals and objectives, and action items that you can control to get you closer to your goals brings peace of mind.
