The University of South Alabama — South, for short — welcomes students to the historic city of Mobile, where Gulf Coast beaches are an easy drive after class. For some majors, the Gulf of Mexico is their classroom, with a base at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. Then there’s SURF – the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program –and the Honors College, which draw students from many disciplines. The 1,200-acre main campus of South offers state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and research in more than 125 academic programs. The University is classified as a Carnegie R2 institution with a high level of research activity. South offers early acceptance programs for qualified high school seniors to programs in medicine, nursing, psychology and physical therapy. Or travel around the world and earn academic credits through South’s study abroad programs.

The University is strategically located in an international manufacturing hub, providing opportunities for researchers and students to create knowledge and technologies. The University’s coastal location is a catalyst for innovations in marine science, coastal weather forecasting, coastal resiliency, environmental toxicology and biology. USA researchers are creating new nanomaterials, attracting the interest of Mobile’s burgeoning aerospace industry, while faculty and students in the College of Medicine and Mitchell Cancer Institute are developing new disease bio-markers and drugs.

Students at South enjoy Greek life, intramural sports and a

wide range of extracurricular activities. There are more than 200 clubs and organizations on campus. Aspiring leaders serve in the Student Government Association and First Year Council. Community engagement is a priority at South. The University embraces its diversity with events such as the Holi festival and the annual Soul Food Lunch celebrating Black History Month. There are hiking and mountain biking trails on campus, along with an Outdoor Adventures program that helps students explore Mobile Bay and other natural wonders. The Southerners, South’s student ambassadors, sponsors an annual mud volleyball tournament called Oozeball.

If you’re a sports fan, Jaguar athletes compete in 17 NCAA Division I sports, including football, baseball, basketball, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball, and track and field as a charter member of the Sun Belt Conference. The football team plays in the new, oncampus Hancock Whitney Stadium. For weekend athletes on campus, the 116,000-square-foot Student Recreation Center offers indoor and outdoor swimming, along with a four-court basketball gym, cardio theater, weight training center and group fitness classes. There’s even a rock-climbing wall.
