On February 13, 2017, DuPont agreed to a preliminary settlement of $670.7 million to resolve the claims of approximately 3,550 people who developed cancer or other illnesses attributed to drinking water
contaminated by the toxic chemical C-8 discharged for decades from a DuPont plant in West Virginia. Cory Watson is honored to have the privilege of representing these men and women who had the courage to take up their legal fight against one of the world’s biggest companies.

Tale of Two Attorneys Jennifer G. Rose,
Certified Family Law Specialist and founder of The Rose Law Firm, LLC Q: Why do you do practice family law for a living? J: Growing up, I used to assist and watch my father in the courtroom and the work he did fascinated me. I loved how he fought for his clients, how they cried when they won, how structured the process was, and how someone could use knowledge to protect another person. It was almost like being a superhero except we were using our brains instead of brawn. It just seemed like a very honorable and enjoyable way to make a living. I went for it and haven’t looked back since.
Q: Favorite thing about the job? J: This may not be the glamorous answer you were looking for; however, I like helping people at the toughest point in their lives. I don’t enjoy seeing people suffer but I do enjoy guiding people through something tough and then seeing them not only survive but also thrive. I like to think God gave me my toughness for a reason and that is to be a protector for others who need someone to lean on in a time of extraordinary grief. Family law allows me to do that for people.
Q: Speaking of superheroes, what would you say is your superpower as an attorney? J: Although it might sound boring, I think one of my biggest assets is my commitment to preparation. I’m always the most prepared person in any room and this fact allows me to be as aggressive or as passive as my client’s case needs me to be. You’d be amazed how many times I’ve come up against another attorney who came unprepared and couldn’t even remember simple things like what their client does for a living or the names and ages of the client’s children. Not being prepared puts them at a huge disadvantage. For me, I know every client’s story backwards and forwards to the point where their story IS MY story, their cause IS MY cause. It’s almost like a method actor, except with a courtroom… (laughs)
Q: What do you wish more people knew about lawyers? J: That attorneys aren’t emotionless robots. I think there’s this misconception that attorneys are devoid of feeling or empathy for others but I can honestly say that with most attorneys I know, nothing could be further from the truth. As a lawyer there’s a fine line we have to walk between being professional and tough for our client’s sake and likeable at the same time. I like to think I’m good at this. A lot of lawyers out there struggle with this, and I think they sometimes get unfairly judged as being cold and unfeeling. Granted there are some real pieces of work out there, but I think most of us attorneys do care about and want the best for our clients.
Q: What would you do for a living if you weren’t practicing law? J: I’d be a schoolteacher, believe it or not. I love kids and could easily spend every day with them. I personally love learning and think it would be a joy to pass that love on to our next generation of leaders. In my opinion, teachers are the real unsung heroes of our society the way they give of themselves and shape young minds.

Family Law Attorney and Lead Associate at The Rose Law Firm, LLC Q: Why do you practice family law for a living? K: I think that everyone has a gift, some people teach, some people build things, some people invent, you get the point. Me? I’m a problem solver. I enjoy solving complex problems and I love variety. Honestly, there aren’t many places where can you get to do more of those two things than family law. I hear from other attorneys that they won’t or can’t do this every day because it burns them out. For me, the challenge energizes me. Even better yet, I get to use my gift doing something I enjoy, AND I get to help people in the process. Q: What would you say is your superpower as an attorney? K: I’d say relationship building with my clients. I get to know them really well, especially since they are telling me some tough things about their lives. I try to form a bond of trust with them. I intently listen to their problems and stories, and I care about what happens to them. It’s just human nature that you fight hard for those you have formed bonds with and those you like. These bonds help me stay sharp and be able to go to war in the courtroom on their behalf. Some of my clients have even become like family to me and have done things like invite me to the graduations of their children and other family functions. Things like that are so rewarding.
Q: What would you do for a living if you weren’t practicing law? K: I’d be a physical therapist for the elderly or work with caring for older people in some capacity. First of all, I love being around older people. Hearing the stories about their lives and experiences and just spending time with them is very enjoyable to me. I remember fondly the people who helped my grandparents and would love to be the person to do that for someone else. Q: Favorite thing about the job? K: My favorite thing about my job is being able to improve the lives of children through my work. There really isn’t a much better feeling than getting a child away from abuse or setting a family on the right path for their future. Q: What do you wish more people knew about lawyers? K: Almost all lawyers are good people who care deeply about what happens with clients and their cases. The law was always seen as a very honorable profession in the past, but I think modern society and a few bad apples in the legal bunch have spoiled it for those of us who are serious and passionate about what we do. We aren’t just a bunch of mercenaries for hire. Most of us got into this because we love helping people. Strange litigation, which successfully created plaintiff and defendant classes for enforcement of marriage equality in Alabama.
