SARAH VALIN RISING DESIGN STAR WINNER 2012 Sarah Valin is seventeen years old and the winner of the 2012 Rising Design Star Challenge. Her passion for design and using it as a tool for innovation has compelled her to participate and become a member of several different art organizations. Sarah is a member of the National Art Honor Society. She enjoys volunteering at local art shows, participating in advance placement art, and most importantly partaking in Birmingham Fashion Week. Earning the title of Birmingham Fashion Week’s Rising Design Star only confirmed my vision of creating my own clothing line in the future. I hope to continue involving myself in what I love—fashion design—at a design school in New York City in the fall. As for right now, however, I am enjoying spending time with my friends and family, blogging, and continuing to design clothing.

benefactors: Camp Smile-A-Mile:

Camp Smile-A-Mile was founded in 1985. Our mission today is to provide year round challenging, unforgettable recreational and educational experiences for young cancer patients, their families as well as young adult survivors from Alabama at no cost. Our purpose is to provide these patients, families and survivors with avenues for fellowship, to help them cope with their disease, and to prepare them for life after cancer.

WHAT DOES CAMP DO?

Camp Smile-A-Mile is a chance for these children to be themselves. They can shed their wigs, leave their prosthetics at home and no one is going to make fun of them or stare as these children might experience at school, it is a time for them to just be kids and forget about this disease that they are battling. Everyone there understands what they are going through. With the creation of Camp SAM in 1985 these children are able to participate in a normal camping environment while remaining under medical supervision. Pediatric Oncology Nurses and Physicians from Children’s Hospital in Birmingham stay at the camp during each camp session. They administer chemotherapy as well as take care of all the first aid needs of the campers. More than 400 children attend per year, 70 per session.

Alabama Forever:

Alabama Forever was founded in response to the April 27th, 2011 tornadoes that ravaged our state. Co-Founders Alex Sokol, Chris Nix and Ed Welden are lifelong friends and Alabama residents that saw a need for helping the state that they loved so much. What was founded as a response to the storms, Alabama Forever goes beyond disaster relief. Our core purpose is to help Alabama communities in need. Long after the devastation from the tornadoes has past we will be here to improve the quality of life for the residents of our great state. Rather than simply giving back, Alabama Forever will assist the residents and communities by offering viable resolutions to maintain the best possible life for the citizens of Alabama for generations to come. The mission of Alabama Forever is simple-to help our communities in need. Alabama Forever was founded by tragedy, developed by necessity, and inspired by the beauty and strength of what makes Alabama special, its people. Our efforts will all be community based with the sum of the whole being far greater than it’s parts. b-metro.com
