Lawson State Community College Lawson State Community College, ranked by Washington Monthly magazine as the Top 5 community college in America in 2013, is a comprehensive, public, two-year multi-campus college, which seeks to provide accessible quality educational opportunities, promote economic growth and enhance the quality of life for people in its service area. Adding to its most recent prestige, the College was honored in 2010 as a Top 50 community college in the nation and a “Champion of Change” by the White House in 2011 for its community impact and innovative approaches to solving challenges and helping individuals achieve educational and career goals. Lawson State for the past five years has also been ranked as a military-friendly institution. As a result of this notability and the success of its graduates, Lawson State experienced a historic moment when the nation’s 44th president, Barack Obama, visited the college in March 2015 to present his platform on the economy and financial literacy.
With campuses in Birmingham and Bessemer, Lawson State offers more than 85 areas of study in business technologies, career technical, health professions and liberal arts and sciences with classes scheduled for day, evening, weekend and online. Programs are designed to meet the needs of traditional students, non-traditional students and dual enrollment. Numerous programs are also scheduled through workforce development and adult education. For the well-rounded collegiate experience, Lawson State encourages participation in its numerous clubs and organizations, such as choir, cheerleading and dance, and competitive sports and intercollegiate athletics, including men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and baseball. The College also offers residential living on the Birmingham campus. Additional educational opportunities are available for students to obtain four year degrees through Alabama A&M University, through online, evening and weekend classes in several program areas. Lawson offers a similar program with Huntingdon College, offering courses in business management with a health management concentration and criminal justice with several minors available.

The W: Mississippi University for Women
Personal, Affordable, Quality Education Our students say there’s something special about The W. You might think they’re talking about our beautiful historic campus, our small class sizes, or the fact that we’ve been consistently ranked by U.S. News & World Report, Washington Monthly Magazine, and Online College Database. Sure those are important. But what students say gives their education that extra something is our community, which is down to earth, welcoming, and intellectually curious. It’s what makes them feel at home. The W is known for its intimate setting; history and traditions; and “like family” attitude. Physical Environment Unique in the marketplace, The W provides a walkable, open campus; a large number of buildings on The National Register of Historic Places; and a geographic location in easy distance of its host community, Columbus, Mississippi. Social/Psychological Environment A campus known for its Southern hospitality, The W has a commitment to each student that closely aligns with its mission; a strong sense of service; a familiar tradition; and a
closeness with faculty that allows building relationships that last. Quality of Instruction and Academic Excellence Our university has an experienced faculty; an institutional reputation for strong academics and program offerings; strong peer interaction; and a favorable 14:1 student faculty ratio. The W was founded in 1884 on a pretty daring idea: women should have the chance for higher education. Today, the university attracts both female and male students from around the region and around the world. It has established one of the premier nursing programs in the state, offering degrees from the associate’s through the doctor of nursing practice, and has developed a nationally recognized program in culinary arts. The W’s colleges include the College of Arts, Sciences, & Education, the College of Business & Professional Studies and the College of Nursing & Health Sciences. We know college is not just about academics. It’s hard not to find a fit in one of more than 75 student organizations. Help plan a concert, compete in intramurals, serve in student government, join a social club, sorority, or fraternity. Or start your own organization. We’re all about you!

Miles College
Miles College Strategically Strengthens its Ties and Is Poised for Growth Miles College is positioning itself as not only a critical cornerstone of Birmingham, Alabama’s past, but also a key partner in its future. In addition to producing graduates who work in the city government and its utility offices, and who comprise its professional population of doctors and lawyers and business owners, the institution has been a key partner with the city of Birmingham in many initiatives, including the White House’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative. As part of this push toward community engagement, the institution’s leadership is working with the City of Fairfield to develop partnerships such as rebuilding abandoned area homes with Habitat for Humanity to enhance both the college and the neighboring community. Miles College, founded in 1898, is a premier liberal arts institution which is fully accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and accredited by Commission on Colleges. Miles is the only four-year institution in historic Birmingham designated as a member of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). Miles College is a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) higher learning institution. The College is one of only 39 HBCUs to have the designation of a United Negro College Fund (UNCF) institution. The College offers baccalaureate programs with majors

such as Accounting, Biology, Business Administration, Chemistry, Communications, Computer and Information Sciences, History, Language Arts, Criminal Justice, Early Childhood/Elementary Education, Eng-lish, Mathematics, Political Science and Social Work. In sum, Miles offers 28 Bachelor Degree programs in six academic divisions to an enrollment of approximately 1,700 students. Miles College has 135 faculty members who are visibly committed to higher learning and professional development. Faculty members are diverse and bring professional and personal experiences from over twenty countries. At least 30% of the faculty members are from Asian and African countries. Under the leadership of President George T. French, Jr., Miles College is strong financially, and in 2006 purchased a new 41-acre campus adjacent to the existing campus. Previously “landlocked,” this acquisition enabled Miles to double the land size of the College. By 2012, the campaign had raised $41 million, which allowed for the purchase of Lloyd Noland Hospital, which would become the site of the North Campus, and the simultaneous construction of three new buildings on campus—a student center, a dormitory, and a campus admissions and welcome center. With strategic leadership and innovative programs, Miles College is poised to build its historic past into a bright future.

The University of Montevallo
FOUNDED IN 1896, the University of Montevallo is located in the heart of Alabama, approximately 35 miles south of Birmingham. Designed by the architects behind New York’s Central Park and the grounds around North Carolina’s Biltmore House, our campus looks like what you dream a college campus should look like: white columns, expansive lawns, brick walkways and huge stately oaks. The University of Montevallo has the charm of a liberal arts experience but provides the value of a state supported institution. Here, students learn in an educational environment that boasts a student/faculty ratio of 16:1 and an average class size of 23. At UM, we don’t merely inspire – we teach our students how to harness inspiration, become versatile and give back. Through our accreditations, scholarships and faculty resources, we’ve cultivated a reputation for producing bright minds. Montevallo offers academic programs in four colleges: Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Fine Arts. Students choose from more than 35 degree programs and approximately 60 majors and concentrations. They have unprecedented opportunities for conducting undergraduate research under full-time faculty mentors.
UM fields 19 NCAA Division II athletic teams that compete in the Gulf South Conference. Needless to say, students have ample opportunity to don the purple and gold. Unique to Montevallo is its homecoming tradition, College Night, known as the only tradition of its kind in the nation. Since 1919, Montevallo students from across all disciplines have come together on this one night of the year for a spirited competition like no other. College Night was selected as a “Local Legacy” for the Library of Congress’s bicentennial celebration in 2000. U.S. News & World Report ranks Montevallo as the 13th Best Public University in the South in its Division. UM was also recently named a College of Distinction for the sixth consecutive year. We invite you to take a tour and see for yourself what becoming a Falcon is all about.
