The Alabama

Mission Statement We believe that the Alabama and Lyric Theatres are true Birmingham landmarks. Showplace Society members can preserve and protect the Lyric and Alabama for generations to come. Will you help us make sure the shows never stop? www.alabamatheatre.com/showplacesociety/

Highlights The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 In 1993 the Alabama Theatre received the designation of Official Historic Theatre of Alabama in 1993 In 2011 The Alabama Theatre received the Building of the Year Award from the Alabama Architectural Foundation. The award is presented to the one building statewide that best exemplifies how architecture can provide a meaningful impact on the citizens of Alabama in the past, present and future. In 1998, the Theatre underwent a complete front door to back door restoration. The work was done by EverGreene Studios from New York City. In 8 months, the theatre went from its look of faded grandeur to a sparkling 1927 look with all the gold leaf paint either replaced or cleaned.

The Alabama Theatre was used primarily as a movie palace for 55 years, with the exception of the annual Miss Alabama pageant and the weekly Mickey Mouse Club. In 1987, the owners of the facility declared bankruptcy and the theatre was purchased by Birmingham Landmarks Inc., a nonprofit corporation. The new Alabama Theatre for the Performing Arts hosts many live events, as well as films. Each year the Theatre hosts over 150 events attended by a 150,000 Birmingham area citizens. In 2009 The Hill Event Center, adjacent to the theatre, was opened to offer a ballroom and reception area for weddings, and other social and business events held at the theatre complex. We believe that the Alabama and Lyric Theatres are true Birmingham landmarks. Join the Showplace Society, whose members preserve and protect the Lyric and Alabama for generations to come.

The Arc of Central Alabama

Give   Birmingham 

Mission Statement

The Arc of Central Alabama serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families through comprehensive and quality programming, advocacy efforts, education, and awareness, all in an effort to ensure those with IDD have the opportunity to reach their fullest potential for the most independent life possible.

Highlights • We are considered the only non-reject program in Alabama, meaning we accept all referrals through the proper channels and no one is turned away due to severity of disability, psychiatric diagnosis, behavioral challenges, or medical needs. • The Arc is the only provider in Alabama that can provide services for a person’s lifetime, supporting them at all ages, from birth to death. • We are the state’s largest provider of services and also designated as a crisis center for individuals with IDD. • The Arc of Central Alabama has been accredited by both the Council on Quality Leadership (CQL) and Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

The people served by The Arc of Central Alabama are one of the most vulnerable groups often overlooked in society. The Arc serves 900+ of these amazing people 24/7, all 365 days of the year through our five core programs. Community experience provides educational and adaptive life-skills training for adults with IDD (intellectual and developmental disabilities). Residential services support adolescents and adults with IDD in a comfortable, safe home environment. Employment support provides training for adults with IDD who desire to work and empowering individuals to be as independent as possible. Early intervention serves toddlers and their families through in-home therapy, special instruction, and resources. None of these programs would be possible without advocacy—advocating for the rights of people with IDD and funding to support their needs at the local state and national level.

Hope for Autumn Foundation’s mission is to provide new hope and assistance for families battling childhood cancer, to support innovative research in childhood cancer therapies, and to increase community awareness of childhood cancer and cutting-edge treatment options.

Highlights We are considered the only non-reject Since 2012, HFAF has assisted childhood cancer families in Alabama with over $450,000 Since 2012, HFAF has provided over $204,000 to childhood cancer research at Children’s of Alabama and UAB HFAF organizes the largest childhood cancer awareness day in the state in September, called Give Hope Day HFAF has been voted Hoover’s Best Local Cause in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021

HFAF began as a small backyard crawfish boil held to raise money for a family whose daughter, Autumn, was battling leukemia. The crawfish boil grew over the years in size and revenue, and in 2012, Hope for Autumn Foundation was founded as a 501(c)3 public charity. Previously, the foundation was able to assist one to three families per year, once a year, with the crawfish boil revenue. Currently, HFAF accepts financial assistance applications year round from families from the Alabama region that are battling childhood cancer. The funds raised by HFAF also directly benefit Alabama’s Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorder’s Developmental Therapeutics program, which is a cutting-edge research and treatment program located in Birmingham at Children’s Hospital of Alabama. This program serves the children with incurable cancers, providing treatments that are not widely available. Finally, HFAF works to raise awareness of childhood cancer simply because awareness leads to funding, and funding leads to cures.

Mission Statement To transform men and women directly affected by homelessness, addiction, and unhealthy living into those who lead healthy, self-sufficient, and productive lives for the glory of God.

Jimmie Hale Mission

Highlights Founded in 1944 by Jimmie and Jessie Hale The mission has 3 residential facilities in the Greater Birmingham area A capital campaign is being launched in 2022 with the goal to raise $10 million to make improvements at the Shepura Men’s Center, Royal Pines Center, and Jessie’s Place Facility Michael Coleman took helm as Executive Director in November of 2019. Coleman succeeded Tony Cooper when he retired after 32 years of leading the ministry.

The Jimmie Hale Mission (JHM) has been making a difference in the Birmingham area for over 75 years and is one of the most well-known nonprofits organizations in central Alabama. Its purpose is to help those suffering from homelessness through education and remediation, job readiness and spiritual support. What began as a storefront chapel for men in 1944 has expanded to a multi-campus organization serving men and women and those impacted by addiction. JHM has long said that while the recovery process does begin with a meal – meeting a physical need – it doesn’t end there. JHM is focusing its attention now on those working towards complete transformation through its Active Recovery program. JHM’s Active Recovery is a 15-week residential program that offers an intensive, clinically-structured, faith-based group approach to transformation. It leads clients to understand and overcome past traumas and life issues that contribute to their substance abuse, homelessness and unhealthy living. Jimmie Hale Mission is helping create healthy, contributing citizens in our community.

All services are offered to clients at absolutely no cost through the generosity of JHM’s donors

The Lyric

Mission Statement We believe that the Alabama and Lyric Theatres are true Birmingham landmarks. Showplace Society members can preserve and protect the Lyric and Alabama for generations to come. Will you help us make sure the shows never stop? www.alabamatheatre.com/showplacesociety/

Highlights With 750 seats on two levels, 12 opera boxes and an intimate 60 feet from the stage to the back of the balcony, there isn’t a bad seat in the house. Built with architecture resembling the bell of a trumpet, the acoustic power of the Lyric is sure to captivate every audience. Designed with live entertainment in mind, the Lyric will welcome the best concerts, symphonies, theatre productions and live performances in the Southeast. The beautifully restored Lyric Theatre stands proudly with over 100 years of history and is hard at work creating a new century of stories after its grand reopening in February 2016. Set in the heart of Birmingham, this once-Vaudeville theatre is the beloved home to concerts, symphonies, operas and theatre productions as well as many community events.

Built in 1914 for B.F. Keith’s Vaudeville circuit, the Lyric is one of few theatres still existing today that was specifically designed to maximize the acoustics and close seating needed for vaudeville shows. Major stars such as the Marx Brothers, Mae West, Sophie Tucker, Will Rogers and Milton Berle played the Lyric. The Lyric was once the finest performing arts theatre in the city and through its $11.8 million restoration, it is again. Listed on the National Register as part of the Birmingham Downtown Retail & Theatre Historic District, this century-old venue is a beacon of history, entertainment, and culture in the heart of Birmingham. The theatre offers a wider stage and closer audience—better suited for performing arts such as the symphony, ballet, opera and theatre. The Lyric should always be thought of primarily as a performing arts theatre and is an unequaled venue for live performances of all types.

Mission Statement

Smile–A–Mile

Smile-A-Mile’s mission is to provide hope, healing of the spirit and love for the whole family during the childhood cancer journey. Through year-round meaningful and educational programming, SmileA-Mile helps those in Alabama who are affected by childhood cancer thrive during treatment and the years beyond.

Highlights All programs Smile-A-Mile offers are provided at no cost to the families. Through our Hospital Outreach Program, Smile-A-Mile provides both inpatient and outpatient programming to patients and their families.

Smile-A-Mile started in 1985 as a summer camp for children in Alabama with cancer. Over the years, the organization has grown to be a year-round program serving children and their families from diagnosis, during treatment and through the years beyond. A childhood cancer diagnosis impacts the entire family. Unfortunately, once a child completes treatment, the cancer journey does not end for the child or the family. There are often lifelong emotional and physical side effects of treatment. Smile-A-Mile is dedicated to providing these survivors and their families with a sense of normalcy, improved mental well-being and tools to help them cope with the disease no matter where they are in their journey. Mission Statement The TumTum Tree Foundation’s mission is to enrich the lives of children in Alabama who face life-altering and life-threatening illnesses.

TumTum Tree Foundation

Highlights The TumTum Tree Foundation is America’s longest running wine auction dedicated to supporting children’s charities. In 2021, TumTum Tree Foundation was awarded by the AFP, the Most Outstanding Charitable Organization in AL. In 32 years, the TumTum Tree Foundation has donated $15 million to Alabama’s children’s charities. The 2021 TumTum Tree Foundation wine auction was the most successful event to date. It raised $1.3 million to distribute among twelve beneficiary partners (which you can find at www. tumtumtreefoundation.org/currentbeneficiaries).

It was a spur of the moment inspirational kind of thing, two big-hearted wine-loving Birminghamians with a great idea but no experience in wine auctions. They had attended the Napa Valley Wine Auction and wanted to do something similar, to benefit children’s charities in their home state. The first beneficiary was Magic Moments, a local Alabama organization granting wishes to children with life threatening medical conditions. It was 1990, nestled in the cozy comfort of Frank and Pardis Stitt’s Bottega Restaurant, attended by 75 patrons who raised around $25,000. No one knew where the auction would go from there . . . What mattered was the impact on the children and the excitement that filled the room. Something great happened that night, and over the last three decades wow has it grown. One of the auction lots that first night was two bottles of Grace Family Vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, which sold for $2000. The donor called Dick Grace to let him know what his wine had sold for (a record at that time), and the following year Ann & Dick Grace participated as Honorary Chairman, and the event netted $75,000. Each auction since has had honorary chairmen from the wine community, an all-star list of very generous people making great wine. As the auction grew, so did the list of beneficiaries and we began to expand our reach towards other local organizations serving children in need. In the Fall of 2005, we changed our name to the TumTum Tree Foundation. We wanted to better capture our mission in our name – to enrich the lives of children by providing a beacon of hope, and a respite from their daily challenges, safely beneath their own TumTum trees, as inspired by Lewis Carroll’s poem Jabberwocky. The heart of this organization has always been the children we serve. And their spirit is captured in the participants – kind people, generous wine makers – who come together joyously to have fun and enrich the lives of children. We are the TumTum Tree Foundation. We are the longest running charity wine auction in the United States devoted to raising money for children’s charities. Our sole function is the production of the wine auction and we have raised over $15 million dollars since inception.

Upcoming Fundraisers 33rd TumTum Tree Foundation Wine Auction will be held November 3-5, 2022 (details TBA soon)

Mission Statement

AIM is part of a patient-centered approach to health care that addresses the needs of the mind, body and spirit. AIM strives to transform the environment of care and enhance healing and well-being for our patients, families and staff through creative arts experiences.

UAB Institute For Arts in Medicine (AIM)

Highlights AIM services are provided by professional Artists in Residence at UAB hospital and by credentialed creative arts therapists at Children’s of Alabama and St. Vincent’s East. Artists in Residence specialize in visual arts, music, dance and movement, creative and expressive writing, and storytelling. Research suggests arts in health can: • Reduce anxiety and perceived pain in the hospital setting • Help to prevent the onset of mental illness and age-related physical decline • Support the treatment or management of mental illness, noncommunicable diseases and neurological disorders • Assist in acute and end-of-life care AIM works closely with the UAB’s School of Health Professions Department of Occupational Therapy (OT) to study the impact of its programs and add to research in the field of Arts and Health.

AIM is part of a whole-person approach to healthcare focusing on the mind, body, and spirit of a patient or caregiver. AIM is part of the growing field of arts and health that acknowledges that the arts play a critical role in human well-being as supported by research and experience. “Arts and health” aligns with the World Health Organization’s definition of health as a “state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” AIM was created in 2013 and developed out of the education and outreach program of the Alys Stephens Center in partnership with UAB Medicine. As a pilot project AIM started with art programs conducted by trained Artists in Residence in two hospitals for 10 hours a week. The Institute has grown to provide programs for 70 hours a week and has served over 170,000 patients, families and staff at UAB Hospital, St. Vincent’s East and Children’s of Alabama. Art experiences are provided at bedsides, group settings and in hospital waiting areas. AIM also offers programs beyond healthcare settings, including workshops for senior adults in HUD-subsidized independent living facilities and in-person and virtual programs for people with disabilities and chronic illness.
