Birmingham Restaurant Week In the spring of 2010, Rev Birmingham’s James Little returned from an Atlanta visit and enthusiastically shared his dining experiences during Atlanta Restaurant Week with STYLE Advertising partners Chuck Cargal and Bill Stoeffhaas. With support in its debut year from culinary legend Frank Stitt and some 34 other locally-owned restaurants, Birmingham Restaurant Week 2010 was a smash success! Now, five years older and wiser, more than 50 restaurants are expected to participate in BRW 2014. This year marks the fifth consecutive year that restaurants and foodies in and around Birmingham will come together to showcase and celebrate the city’s award-winning culinary scene. Taking place from Aug. 15 to Aug. 24, BRW presented by Regions Bank spotlights locally owned and operated eateries throughout the Magic City and celebrates its acclaimed culinary culture by offering incentives for area residents to revisit their favorite restaurants or to experience recently opened venues for the first time. “Birmingham Restaurant Week has ignited a spark in Birmingham’s culinary culture and has done an excellent job in spotlighting many of our city’s incredible restaurants,” said Birmingham Mayor William A. Bell, Sr. “Our city has such an accessible, diverse dining scene and Birmingham Restaurant Week is the best way to experience our vibrant restaurant culture at a modest price,” says Frank Stitt. “You’ll see for yourself why we’re nationally celebrated as a food and drink destination and one of the best in the South.” Throughout the 10-day culinary affair, participating restau-

Pepper Place Saturday Market The Pepper Place Saturday Market was established in 2000 in response to a growing need to help small family farms, and provide a connection between these family farmers and the people of Birmingham, Alabama. From its beginnings with a few tents in the center parking lot of Pepper Place, it has now grown to about 100 tents spread across parking lots and streets around Pepper Place. Attendance also has grown at times to over 8,000 people at the height of the season. Originally running from mid May until early October, the market now begins in mid April and ends in mid December. All vendors are local, from a rough geographic range of about 100 miles. All of the farmers who sell to you at the Market are the actual growers, their family members and friends. The Market expands and contracts with the seasons, ranging from wonderful bedding plants, herbs, lettuces and strawberries in the spring to the summer’s incredible blackberries, blueberries, peaches, sweet corn and a wonderful array of heirloom and hybrid tomatoes. As fall comes, we see a variety of squashes, sweet potatoes, greens, pumpkins and wonderful greenery to decorate for the holidays. The plate of homemade pimento cheese, smoked trout dip, candied bacon, Andouille sausage, marinated olives, and giardiniera scores big with us (although house-made crackers, rather than prepackaged saltines, would have been a nice touch.) The pimiento cheese was among the best I have ever had—unmasked cheese flavors shine through. The creamy smoked trout dip was simply divine. And I have always loved chocolate bacon, but this was my first bite of candied bacon; I am now a fan of this crisp, sweet, meaty delight. The acidity of the generous helping of marinated olives and colorful pickled veggies rounded and balanced the dish.
