PRESIDENT'S LETTER SU M M ER 2016
Welcome to MarineMax Lifestyles As many of you already know, I’m a water enthusiast. I grew up waterskiing and was fortunate enough to compete professionally. Still today, there is seldom a weekend that goes by that I’m not on skis in the water with my family – and barefoot skiing, running the slalom course, and trick skiing. The boating lifestyle has taught me many life lessons and values. Most importantly, it taught me about the importance of teamwork. Our team and family of boaters know that being part of the MarineMax family is the ultimate team sport that connects family and friends. This is why I love boating and being on the water so much, as well as my job at MarineMax. When MarineMax became a public company 18 years ago this past June, it didn’t take me long to fully appreciate how much I would come to depend on those around me in order for our team

W
hen Minnesota-native Ralph Samuelson paired two boards and a clothesline to invent waterskiing in 1922, he probably never envisioned how popular the sport
would become. Or, just how it would evolve in the decades to follow. Though traditional skiing still pairs essentially a set of planks with a towrope, the latest generation of towsports often share more in common with surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding. Riders stand sideways on single wide boards, and rather than simply cross the wake, use it to propel them across or over the water. Boat manufacturers have had to adapt to keep up. Once designed to produce as minimal a wake as possible, current towsports boats often do just the opposite, pumping up wake volume to allow riders to both surf and soar. Brands like Nautique have long been at the forefront of this movement, producing cutting-edge designs that have allowed riders to take their passions to the next level. Supreme Boats provides the same fun at an even more accessible price point. Wondering what you—and Ralph—have been missing out on? Here’s an overview of the latest generation of tow sports.
Wakeboarding/Wakeskating Arguably the hottest tow sport of the last two decades, wakeboarding mixes the feel of skiing with the sideways stance of skateboarding or snowboarding. The board’s generous surface area typically allows riders to get atop the water with little struggle and at slower speeds. Once up you can learn to slash the wake like a surfer, or better yet, fly above it like an acrobat. Wakeboarding has had the most profound effect on boat design. While nearly any boat can satisfy the recreational rider, serious enthusiasts demand bigger and shapelier wakes to serve as their ramp to the heavens. Today’s latest generation of wake-oriented boats typically feature deep-V hulls with onboard ballast systems to settle the boat deeper into the water and pump up the volume of the wake behind. Overhead, towers have replaced simple tow eyes or pylons, anchoring the towrope higher off the water to allow riders powering up those watery ramps to fly ever higher. Prefer a true “skate” feel to your riding? Consider wakeskating. An early spinoff from wakeboarding, wakeskating eschews bindings, linking riders to the board solely by the friction between their sneakered feet and the board’s grippy surface. While talented wakeskaters

their
wakeboarding peers, more fun is often had mimicking the same maneuvers you’d find on the street, with riders spinning, rolling, or twisting the board underfoot.

Wakesurfing Those same big wakes that thrill wakeboarders also prove, with a little tweaking, to be pretty darn good for bringing the feel of ocean surf to landlocked lakes. And as the Beach Boys theorized, if everybody had an ocean, well, you know what we’d be doing. By adding external hardware that disrupts the convergence point of water running down the hullsides, inboard and V-drive boat manufacturers like Nautique and Supreme have created a surfer’s dream — the endless wave. The wake on the surfer’s preferred side gets boosted in size and shaped to perfection. The below-the-hull location of the prop allows riders to surf in close proximity to the boat essentially worry-free. Think you’re too old to try wakesurfing? Think again. With its low speeds and soft, gentle falls, wakesurfing has proven an activity that the entire family can enjoy.

Whether you plan to ride, surf or skate, start by positioning the board perpendicular to your body, with knees bent into your chest, and arms extended holding the towrope. try pointing your toes toward the boat to minimize drag. Once the board has planed atop the water, pivot it 90-degrees into the forward riding stance following the advice of Nautique pro Shaun Murray. Bring your front hip to the tow handle, keep your chest up, arms straight, and lean slightly back. When you’re comfortable riding and want to steer the board from side to side, don’t try to point the nose or rely on your fins. Proper board control comes from shifting your weight toward your toe or heelside edge. This will sink the rail and cause the board to travel in the appropriate direction.

level as the aft part of the salon (though there is a step up farther forward on the boat). The comfortable cockpit is, of course, open to lush breezes and the warm sunlight, although any sun worshipper with a hint of health consciousness will be happy to know that the space can be shaded by an optional SureShade. A similar option is also available for the boat's other outdoor entertainment space, the foredeck, where a sunpad can convert into a chaise lounge and an optional Bose sound system supplies the tunes. Although it may be easy to envision this boat as a particularly luxurious party platform, true to Sea Ray’s heritage she’ll also be performance oriented. Says Berman, “One of the other most important elements in this boat’s design—besides space—was her great performance. She will easily cruise at 30 miles per hour and top out above that, and that’s with her base engines, the twin Cummins QSB6.7 550 V-drives. With the optional Zeus drives she’ll run a few miles per hour even faster than that.” Not too shabby. If you know anything about express cruisers in this class, you will recognize that those numbers are close to the top of the range. The captain will be able to enjoy these impressive performance features from a helm that should leave any serious boater salivating. That area will feature flip-up arm rests, lots of standing room, and no visible fasteners. Plus, it features the latest Raymarine eS128 screens—one is standard, two is optional—which network straight to the engine data for a “glass dash” feel. And that proves the Sea Ray 450 Sundancer is not only truly sporty and incredibly roomy, she’s also pretty darn smart too. And what’s not to like about that?

BOSTON WHALER
B OSTON CALL IN G THE BOSTON WHALER SPORT AND SUPER SPORT SERIES ARE THE PERFECT INTRODUCTION TO THE WORLD OF BOATING There’s good reason that so many serious boaters look back on their very first boat and fondly recall a Boston Whaler. The iconic builder has been turning out well designed, sturdily built, manageably sized and powered vessels for years. And oh yeah, they’re also a heck of a lot of fun to drive. While Boston Whaler builds excellent boats all the way up to 42-feet long, it is perhaps best known for its smaller models. Indeed, the popular Sport and Super Sport lines are particularly welcoming to new boaters— be they adults or children. Boston Whaler Sports and Super Sports range from 11 feet, 4 inches to 17 feet even. That’s an ideal size range at which to get your feet wet, so to speak. Whalers possess many fine qualities that make them great for both families and novices. But perhaps none of these qualities is as important as the famous Boston Whaler tagline “The Unsinkable Legend.” And that’s because it’s true. Thanks to a foam-coring technique that the brand uses extensively, it is, for all intents and purposes, literally impossible to sink one of these boats. And if you’re a safety-minded individual, as all boaters must be, this should be music to your ears. To prove this lofty claim, Whaler has gone so far as to saw boats in half, and fill them totally with water (and people) without its boats sinking. As far as the Super Sport line goes, the real star for a lot of people will be the 130. With a length of 13 feet 4 inches and a paltry draft of just 7 inches, the boat is extremely versatile. With an LOA like that she can handle a bit of chop in a bay or lake, and maybe even after you get some experience under your belt you could take her out offshore a little ways on a calm day. And that 7-inch draft will definitely come in handy if you decide you want to explore some mangroves, or run the 130 over to your favorite secluded beach for the day. It’s going to have to get pretty skinny before you kick up any mud, that’s for certain.

lively on a fishing trip. And for the aesthetically minded, the boat’s hullside accents are available in options like Classic Desert Tan, Light Blue, or Glacier Green. Even better, all of these options are served up on Boston Whaler’s famously seaworthy hulls, which deliver a ride as smooth and dry as a well made martini. Other boats in the Sport and Super Sport line include the 110 Sport, 110 Tender, 150 Super Sport, and 170 Super Sport. The 70 Evolution runs nearly 30 knots wide open, and about 26 knots under cruise, and runs a 23-kilowatt Kohler generator. It comes equipped with Garmin 8500 Series Black Box with 22-inch screens, with two screens in the lower station and two at the upper helm station. Opening the Merritt Island facility was “truly a monumental change in what Ocean Alexander has done in the past with respect to production manufacturing,” Allender says. “It heralded a whole new approach to how we are designing their product,” says Marshall, who has collaborated on other models for Ocean Alexander. The 70e was designed “literally from scratch” in a facility that was geared to produce production boats efficiently, cost effectively and quickly. “I really like the idea of having that discipline to produce something,” Marshall says. “We’ve got to get everything right first and then go into production. The 70e is really the first model to test that” after three years of development. “You get that old-world craftsmanship that Ocean Alexander has done over the last 42, 45 years, and you add what we bring to table in the United States with the latest technology,” says Jay Hood, President of Merritt Island Boatworks, the facility that manufacturers the boats. “What you get is the best of both worlds.”

your dreams. Yacht chartering is a well-kept vacation secret. The yachts that can host your vacation are not “commercial” vessels per se, but yachts built to the very discriminating and luxurious standards of private owners who allow the yachts to be chartered on a very private, limited and exclusive basis. The real charm of a yacht charter is that you work with your charter agent and the crew to customize your vacation according to your specific style, preferences, tastes, pace, menu, water-borne activities and pursuits, and a litany of fun that only your imagination and dreams can envision. Want to island hop and explore off-beaten tracks? Consider it done. Wish to bask in your private lagoon and never set eyes on another human being? No problem. Prefer to enjoy the night life of the Côte d’Azur and the bright lights of Monte Carlo? It’s yours to experience. Choose to explore a coral reef in the crystal blue waters of the Abacos, Exumas, or the Caribbean? Yearn to visit the historical ports and towns of New England? It’s yours to behold. The world is your oyster! Once you and your charter agent have decided on a particular yacht that best suits your needs in terms of
