We thought a personal story of a medical journey would be the perfect way to introduce our 2013 Excellence in Nursing section, a salute to the power of great nurses.
Our Journey of Caring Chris and Kimberly Snuggs have come to understand the true meaning of caring in their relationships with the nurses and doctors who have helped their daughter, Avery.
Our daughter, Avery, was 4-years-old when she was diagnosed with T-Cell ALL, a form of childhood leukemia. When we were told that our daughter had cancer we were devastated, we felt like our lives were flipped upside down. Through our faith, church family, family and friends and the amazing team of doctors and nurses at Children’s of Alabama, we were able to see how God can use a little 4 year old girl to change lives. While we certainly believe God has His hand on Avery and over our entire situation, He blessed us with two wonderful doctors and amazing nurses who have always cared for Avery as if she were their own. Every time we visit Clinic 8 at Children’s there is a nurse someone in Clinic that has either one of Avery’s T-shirts or another strong kid who has battled or currently battling cancer. Avery is 5 years old now and is doing great, she is in remission and has one year left of treatment. We enjoy our time living our “new normal” life today but certainly want to thank our doctor, Michael Gleason, Matthew Kutny, and all of our caring nurses who have taken care of Avery over the past year and a half. Chris Snuggs is owner of Reliable Ad Group; his wife Kimberly is a nurse. Photos from top left: Avery and one of her nurse practitioners, Rhonda Smith. A26 is Avery on the floor at the old hospital with one of her favorite nurses, Nadder. A beautiful shot of Avery with beads. The family together for a night out.
