LAURA VOGTLE STARTED SCENE AT PEPPER PLACE IN EARLY 2016 TO PROVIDE A SPACE FOR ART, ARTISTS, AND EVENTS. THINGS TOOK OFF IMMEDIATELY. Scene brought in established and up-and-coming artists from across the region, built a treasure trove of one-of-a-kind objects for home décor, and it became a vibrant events space in Birmingham’s design district. She wasn’t planning on expanding or changing her operation, but that all changed when Vogtle saw the huge, retrofitted warehouse space that will soon become her new project: Design Supply. “When I walked in, I said ‘oh my gosh, this building is awesome!’” She couldn’t pass it up. The idea behind Design Supply is to do more of the same. A lot more. 8,500 square feet of more, to be exact.
Supply staff one on one. Designers will have an opportunity to create custom pieces for their clients in a fun, supportive, creative environment—three things that embody what Pepper Place has come to represent for so many in Birmingham. Vogtle sees Design Supply as playing an important role in tying together Pepper Place as a design destination to rival the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center. “People don’t need to go to Atlanta to get everything to put their homes together. We want to bring people here. People should be coming to Pepper Place from Atlanta.” If you stand in the Farmers Market lot at Pepper Place, you’re literally seconds away from high-end design for every room in your home. “This is a huge space,” said Vogtle, “and it’s the missing link in promoting Pepper Place as a design district. You’ve got Charlie [Thigpen] with lawn and garden and interiors, you’ve got King’s House with rugs, you’ve got Richard Tubb with furniture and lighting, Cyndy Cantley with cabinetry, Barri Thompson at Atmosphere with interiors and accents, and the Ferguson Showroom. This is a design destination, and I hope to do my part to bring the community together around that idea. If someone needs to furnish their home, they can walk this loop and get it done.”
Vogtle’s vision is a place where interior designers, decorators, and spacemakers will be able to find objects that will set their homes apart. “We’ll have lines coming in from all over Europe and the US. Between markets in New York, High Point, Dallas, and Las Vegas, then some Italian, Belgian, and Parisian antiques, we’ll offer a level of quality and eccentricity that you usually have to travel to Atlanta to find. We’re devoted to objects—accessories, books, candles, mirrors, whatever you need. Or didn’t know you needed.”
Where Richard Tubb is conservative, Vogtle is artsy. Where Barri Thompson of Atmosphere Home Essentials is eclectic, Vogtle is more traditional. “I want to bring in an additional, complimentary element to Pepper Place.” Really, if you look at the homes in the diverse neighborhoods around Birmingham, you’ll find distinct styles. But you’ll also find something that feels familiar. “Birmingham has its own style,”
In addition to objects from every corner of the world, the large, wide-open showroom will house some of the region’s most inspired art, an extension of the work Vogtle started with Art Gallery 1930. Vogtle plans to feature the work of local craftspeople as well. “We’re really excited about a handmade Ping-Pong table from Joey McGilberry of Chestnut Design Studio.”
says Vogtle. “It’s a little grittier, a little more casual. It’s hard to

put your finger on exactly what it is. At Design Supply, we’ll mix in a little more of the antiques with character and style. 1. WHAT'S THE GAME APP YOU CAN'T QUIT PLAYING? Yahoo Fantasy Baseball. I'm a huge baseball fan and have a long-time Fantasy Baseball league with some friends and co-workers. This app lets me set my lineup and check scores very easily.
1. WHAT'S THE GAME APP YOU CAN'T QUIT PLAYING? I'll admit it, I am still playing Candy Crush. It's my go-to for a mindless small break in the day.
2. WHAT'S THE BEST LIFEHACK APP YOU'VE FOUND? I'm an avid podcast and audiobook listener. Here are a few apps I use for managing that. Downcast manages my podcasts, Audible manages my audio books and Hoopla lets me borrow lots of free audio books from my local library card account.
2. WHAT'S THE BEST LIFEHACK APP YOU'VE FOUND? 1Password. It is by far the best password management app out there. In a day where having to remember tens or hundreds of account logins has you setting the same password for all, 1Password is the answer. The family plan has made it extremely easy for my wife and I to secure our shared household accounts as well. Worth every penny.
3. WHAT THE APP YOU NEVER THOUGHT YOU'D NEED? Outlook. I never thought I'd need to use a Microsoft App on my iPhone. I can connect all my email accounts to it and have one inbox. It has a focused tab that filters important emails in and moves nonimportant emails to a different tab. This way I'm not distracted by emails that aren't top priority.
3. WHAT THE APP YOU NEVER THOUGHT YOU'D NEED? Fantastical 2. I live by my calendar and there isn't a calendar app that makes adding event reminders easier than Fantastical 2. Once I experienced to power of their natural language recognition, I could never go back to the basic Apple calendar. If you have a Mac or an iPhone, it's worth the money.
4. IS THERE AN APP THAT MAKES YOUR AWESOME WORKPLACE RUN SMOOTHLY? Slack. We are a remote-first workplace and Slack is critical to our communication. I can set my notifications to ensure I see the communications I need and not be distracted by the ones I don't.
4. IS THERE AN APP THAT MAKES YOUR AWESOME WORKPLACE RUN SMOOTHLY? Trello. It's a service that allows you to create virtual “boards” with customizable columns and allows you to add “cards” to these boards to manage anything from a software development builds to a to-do list for your home. We use Trello extensively and run all projects from it. It keeps our team tasks organized while at the same time giving our clients full transparency into the status of tasks.
5. WHAT'S AN AIRSHIP APP YOU'RE SUPER PROUD OF AND WANT EVERYBODY TO DOWNLOAD? Iron Tribe has been a life changing experience for our company and myself. They make getting fit and staying in shape so much fun. I'm very proud of the app we were able to build for them. It increases engagement between athletes, has calendar integration, improved scheduling and many other useful features coming.

If you're a parent, check out Wyndy. All sitters (“Wyndys”) go through an extensive background check and my son has taken to each one we have used.

This is a wonderfully frantic farce about the insane, illegal, and frequently criminal measures that desperate people will stoop to just to get their hands on a nice piece of Manhattan real estate. Along the way, Jimmy Noles, The Tribute Artist, will treat the audience to impersonations of famed immortal divas such as Mae West, Katharine Hepburn, and Bette Davis in the defining roles of their careers. This frenzied yarn is woven with quick-witted banter, a hilarious cast of characters, and gender-bending hijinks, all with a hearty dose of Off-Broadway irreverence.
November brings you to the table for The Big Meal, an unusual look at the everyday phenomenon of eating dinner.
TNT is thrilled to announce the Alabama Premiere of Split in Three, a play by Atlanta-based playwright Daryl Lisa Fazio. Set in the Mississippi Delta, 1969, the Supreme Court has put its foot down and segregation must dissolve. Poor sisters, Nola and Nell, live day-today. When they discover a highly-educated sister they never knew they had, in a place where separation begets isolation, difference turns out to be a saving grace.
TNT is delighted that Mr. Busch has agreed to attend the season opener. Details on his arrival and his special one-night, oneman-show performance are forthcoming.
Two young people, Sam and Nicole, meet at a restaurant for a drink. As the years pass, they get married, have children, and get old. Suddenly they’re responsible for having brought four generations of humanity into the world, with all the accompanying joy and misery, from first kiss to final goodbye. A ninety-minute play that spans almost as many years, The Big Meal has a heart as big as a family tree.
Split in Three is part of TNT’s Written in the South program. Every year WITS features the works of new Southern playwrights, both published and unpublished, to provide a venue to showcase their work and an opportunity for area actors, directors, and students to work directly with the authors during the production period. Last December, TNT presented the World Premiere of Audrey Cefaly’s Love Is A Blue Tick Hound, which was a perfect way to kickoff this exciting annual event. PEPPERPLACE.COM

Even if you're not familiar with the nonprofit organization Southern Makers, the name alone conjures images of handsaws, paintstained fingers, eccentric folk art, and birdhouses made of discarded license plates. When people think about Southern craftsmanship, food is often forgotten. But food culture—from preparation to presentation— is absolutely essential to life below the Mason-Dixon line. The weekend of August 11th, 12th, and 13th, more than 100 of Alabama’s top makers came together at Sloss Furnace to celebrate Southern creativity and innovation. Before the festivities got started, however, the Southern Makers non-profit organization had to make sure everybody was well fed, well acquainted, and treated to a sultry Southern night out under the stars. 8

AN INTERVIEW WITH VALERIE THOMAS
MEET THE MARKET GROUPIE
“THE MARKET IS THE MOST HIGH-ENERGY 8 TO 12 SATURDAY MORNING IN THE WORLD.” PEOPLE COME TO THE MARKET AT PEPPER PLACE FOR DIFFERENT REASONS. Maybe it’s the produce, maybe it’s the food, maybe it's the local goods, or simply to watch the endless parade of babies and puppies. Whatever it is, market visitors quickly turn into fans. Then, they become superfans. Then, they’re full-fledged market groupies. Then, there’s Valerie Thomas. She’s on a level all her own. Valerie moved to Birmingham in 2010 with her husband, Steven, when he accepted a job as the director of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital Burn Center. Birmingham is her twelfth, and final, destination after moving her family following her husband’s career as a soldier and a surgeon. Most recently, she and Steven were in San Antonio and she was reluctant to leave, especially to relocate to Birmingham, a city she knew very little about. But, Valerie made the move and Birmingham is much better for it. “Before retiring, Steven would make his rounds personally at the hospital on Saturday mornings,” Valerie recalls. “I would drop him off at the hospital and begin to explore my new city and just started hanging out at The Market.” “Hanging out” soon turned into every Saturday. In all her moves, Valerie had never experienced anything like The Market at Pepper Place. She would explore the booths, try new foods, and quiz the farmers about things that caught her attention. “Early on, I learned about green tomatoes,” she said. “I walked up to the farmer and asked if these tomatoes were picked early so they could redden later. He looked at me and said, 'You’re not from around here are you?' and proceeded to tell me all about green tomatoes, the movie, and the café.”
From that point on, Valerie was hooked. Her weekly trips began an education process about where her food comes from and how it is grown. She likes knowing who is growing her food and flowers or making her soaps and candles. The Market at Pepper Place is a true community that takes care of one another – sometimes going above and beyond for Valerie. “I always start my morning at the flower stand over by Red Cat and leave them there to pick up later. You get the best flowers early,” she said. “One Saturday, I picked my flowers and got so focused shopping elsewhere that I forgot to go back and get my flowers. So, we’ve set up a system, they take my keys. If I get to my car and have forgotten my flowers, I can’t go home.” Pretty simple system, but very effective. For Valerie, The Market goes well beyond changing the way she ate. She credits it with changing her whole life. Valerie and Steven originally bought a home in Redmont overlooking the city – nearby, but not downtown. Recently, they relocated to The Pizitz and she couldn’t be happier. Now, able to walk to and Zyp bike The Market, her lifestyle is focused downtown. She shops at the market for what she eats at home and dines at local spots whenever she gets a chance - Café DuPont has the best fried green tomatoes, by the way. Valerie has even started a business because of what she found and learned at the market. The Val Group, which she calls “Your Birmingham Concierge” on her website, is a service that helps hospitals, government agencies and corporations sell our city during their recruitment process. Valerie creates custom itineraries that include school and neighborhood tours, museum visits, meals at chef-owned restaurants all custom crafted for the individual visitor’s needs.

l l a F o t p U Cozying BARRI THOMPSON OF ATMOSPHERE HOME ESSENTIALS SHARES A FEW TIPS TO HELP YOU FALL IN STEP WITH THE SEASON.
For a practical start, Barri suggests getting cozy. “Put away those lightweight linens from the summer and pull out your furs, wool, cozy throws, and fluffy down comforter. Changing those accessories freshens up your look and adds warmth and texture to your home.” Prepping for fall isn’t just about the look and feel, however. There’s also smell to consider. “In the spring and summer, we lean toward crisp scents like bamboo or champagne. Now’s the time to bring in earthier scents like bourbon and vanilla spice, sandalwood, cedar, and tobacco—scents that evoke the warmth and wood stoves.” An even subtler and unexpected tip is to change your light bulbs. “Switching to warmer bulbs with lower wattage—from 75 down to 60, for instance—keeps harmony with the shorter days and lower light outside.” “Or,” she adds thoughtfully, “you could avoid redecorating altogether and spend the colder months in Bali.” But, if you’re interested in sticking close to home and going all-out for fall, stop by and visit Barrie Thompson at Atmosphere Home Essentials, 224 29th Street South in Pepper Place.

EXERCISE TRENDS WITH AERO JOE A large portion of our population, the boomer generation, is reaching retirement with more time to exercise. I am seeing more people who want to take charge of their health upon retirement and seek out the best. The huge group class at the "big gym" may have cut it years ago, but for many there's a realization that a small class size & highly specialized training can boost results. Aero Joe Pilates reaches beyond just 'boutique' status to provide wellness. Yes, the first goal is a challenging, total body workout, but we're caring for the whole person with community workshops, personalized classes and massage therapy. We provide a therapeutic path to a healthy lifestyle with less chronic pain, especially when dealing with chronic low back discomfort, joint replacements, osteoarthritis, etc. Pilates is for everyone out there. Our clients range from 14 to 95 years old (truly!). Personal relationships create more accountability and enjoyment. At small boutique studios you get to know your classmates and instructors. At Aero Joe Pilates we know you by name (and most kids and grands names too), and you are honestly missed when you aren't in class. A teacher of mine once said "80% of the work is just getting yourself to class." If you can get up and go just to see a friendly face, than that's more than half the effort right there! Your "unlimited" may be limiting you. Mostly monthly memberships or "unlimited classes" at the 'super gyms'run on a business model that counts on you not coming as much as you fancy upon signing up. Be real with yourself on how much you're attending. You will spend more at specialized studios, but you will see the results that you pay for.
AERO JOE PILATES CLASSES ARE AVAILABLE FOR $13 - $22 EACH (PACKAGE RATES). There are first visit intro class deals and class sign up conveniently available via AEROJOEPILATES.COM. Semi & Private training available starting at $45 per session. E-mail to schedule private training: INFO@AEROJOEPIL ATES.COM

may be drawn to the old warehouse architecture, funky light-filled spaces, and our Market. There’s
one aspect to Pepper Place that many may initially overlook, but is integral to making our “place” more of a community than anything else. It’s the footpath that runs through the center of Pepper Place. Situated mid-block between 2nd and 3rd Avenues South running from 28th Street South to 30th (and in the future to 31st), the walkway creates a pedestrian-friendly community where you can park your car and explore our businesses, our restaurants, and our shops. It is a connector that makes it so easy for everyone in our community to visit and get to know one another.
Gardens and greenspaces provide shady areas for visitors to enjoy.
An ATM and patio dining for Cantina and Bettola at The Martin Biscuit Building become a gather spot for friends at all times of day.
OvenBird’s patio and Charlie Thigpen’s Garden Gallery spill out to add interest and activity as you explore the west end of Pepper Place.
Richard Tubb’s new side entrance opens along what was once the Dr. Pepper Building’s loading dock. The raised platform offers a covered connection between the east and west sides of Pepper Place.
Kings House and Design Supply offer upscale home shopping just steps apart.
Currently, Hop City anchors the east end of our footpath, but with the coming development of a new building at Pepper Place, we have plans to expand the path farther east to 31st Street South creating a completely walkable urban neighborhood.
