THE BIRMINGHAM ORIGINALS

A LETTER FROM

Cathy Sloss Jones Hello friends, As autumn settles in, we've been reflecting on our summer at Pepper Place. It was a big season for us, full of surprises and accolades, growth and renovation, art and food and fun. We were visited by legendary TV Chef Andrew Zimmern who heaped praise upon our city, our farmers market, Frank Stitt and OvenBird Chef Chris Hastings. We opened the doors on B3, a great new restaurant, to much acclaim. We built out The Lumbar, a fascinating science bar and restaurant. We welcomed Thrive Clay Studio as a vibrant part of Birmingham’s arts community. And, we struck multiple deals with new tenants and events who you’ll meet in this issue of The Place. Our hearts and our bellies are full. For all of those successes and changes, one small summer memory stands out for me that illustrates what we had hoped for Pepper Place. It was early in the summer, mid-morning when the market was absolutely brimming with visitors perusing the abundant harvest. I was waiting in line at Jones Valley Teaching Farm’s tent. Next to me was a woman with a baby on her hip pointing out and naming all the peppers and tomatoes, potatoes and greens on display. I watched them for a moment and then remembered seeing the woman at that exact spot during last year’s market, except that last year she had been very pregnant. And now here they were, mother and child, with husband and grandparent close by, building memories around food at Pepper Place. Over almost two decades we've seen hundreds of families come to the market. We’ve seen children toddle through one year who now return on their own to grab a coffee or a breakfast burrito with their college friends or with new families of their own. That’s fulfilling because from the beginning we wanted to build Pepper Place into a community. And what does it mean to be part of the Pepper Place community?

What Makes Pepper Place a Community? Pepper Place is much more than uniquely renovated and repurposed buildings. We’re more than just award-winning restaurants.

“As a small, locally owned and operated business, it’s been awesome to be on this side of the growth and to see what’s driving it. Being in Pepper Place, at the center of it all, allows us to keep our finger on the

successful and creative-thinking businesses and we’re more than just a home to some of the region’s most brilliant designers, artists, and stylists. We consider ourselves a community. To give you a better idea of what makes this place so special, we asked some of our tenants to tell us what they think. “When our team started expanding, we looked to other parts of Birmingham for another space, but we couldn’t find anything to top what Pepper Place had to offer. We even waited around for space to open up so we could expand here rather than move into a new space. The parking, the food, the people, and being so close to downtown—it’s

“Birmingham has its own style. It’s a little grittier, a little more casual. It’s hard to put your finger on exactly what it is. When I walked into what would become our new space at Pepper Place, I said, ‘Oh, my gosh. This building is awesome. This is it.’ People in Birmingham are creative, and Pepper Place is home to a lot of Birmingham's talented folks.”

BETTER BLOCK

On October 27th, Pepper Place, in partnership with the City of Birmingham and AARP, revealed a better way to construct a city block with Team Better Block — urban planning experts who unlock the interest and creativity of the public with a process that designs for community, connection, and commerce from the ground up. Volunteers from the Birmingham community helped reimagine the block of 2nd Avenue South between 28th and 29th Streets as a complete street with protected bike lanes and traffic-calming devices to create a better place to live, work and play.

THE BIRMINGHAM

ORIGINALS It’s been a big year for Birmingham’s food scene with the Magic City more firmly establishing itself as a great hub for good eats in the South. In June, famed chef and TV food personality Andrew Zimmern said, “I think Birmingham has solidified itself as the hottest small food city in America right now.” That came on the heels of the exciting news of Chef Frank Stitt’s Highlands Bar & Grill receiving the James Beard Award for outstanding restaurant and his pastry chef, Dolester Miles, being named the nation’s outstanding pastry chef. In addition to those major national accolades, Birmingham has a lot to celebrate locally as well. Pepper Place has welcomed Chef Dean Robb’s B3. James Beard Award winner Rodney Scott announced his new BBQ restaurant just a few blocks away in the Avondale neighborhood. Acclaimed Chef Adam Evans is set to open a new oyster bar two blocks up from Pepper Place in the Lakeview District. And, Back Forty Beer Company out of Gadsden, joined Birmingham's thriving craft beer scene with the opening of a new microbrewery at Sloss Docks and became the first local brewery to incorporate a kitchen and offer American pub food sourced through local growers. Right on 29th Street our newest restaurant, The Lumbar, is set to open early this month. And our resident chefs at OvenBird, Red Cat, Cantina, and Bettola, continue to serve up some of the city’s best offerings. There’s no shortage of culinary talent at Pepper Place, and the same is true for all of Birmingham. When you combine those Pepper Place tenants with local eateries from across the city, you wind up with the Birmingham Originals. It takes all those creative people working together—from the Lakeview District to the far-flung suburbs of Bessemer—to create a culture of food and creativity. All of this culminates with the Birmingham Originals—a collection of some of Birmingham’s most tried and true eateries. From the farm fresh flavors of Little Savannah to the upscale pub fare of The J. Clyde, from the Continental Bakery’s European flair to perfect satisfaction of Ted’s downhome flavor.

Pepper Place is happy to host the Birmingham Originals and all the work they do with Breakin’ Bread—a celebration of the food, drink, and craft that is particular to Birmingham.

The restaurants that make up the Birmingham Originals are driven by a desire to offer top-notch dining to homegrown patrons and visitors alike. They’re driven by the idea that an energized and independent restaurant community makes our city a better place to live—and not just because of the food. According to Flight Network’s list of the 21 Best Food & Drink Festivals in North America, Breakin’ Bread is, “a foodie’s paradise that’s packed with flavours, like maple-bourbon glazed pork tenderloin, New Orleans-style bread pudding with whiskey sauce, fish tacos with cilantro mayo and blue crab cakes with roasted garlic and lemon brown butter.”

and live musical entertainment. In terms of a truly Birmingham event, it doesn’t get much more original than that.

Since 2002, Birmingham Originals has donated more than $125,000 to local charitable organizations benefiting children and families in the greater Birmingham area. The organization began partnering with Jones Valley Teaching Farm (JVTF) two years ago at the inception of the Urban Farm Project.

With hands-on, experiential lessons at their seven Teaching Farms located on elementary, middle, and high school campuses throughout Birmingham, students use food, farming, and the culinary arts as a foundation for academic exploration. Through the Urban Farm Project, Jones Valley Teaching Farm builds vibrant, student-centered Teaching Farms on school campuses to provide an environment where young people can learn, create, explore, and grow a healthy future for themselves and their community.

This year, and every year for the foreseeable future, Breakin’ Bread will offer a day filled with unlimited food sampling along with craft beer and wine, a makers’ market, a kid’s zone with special activities for children,

As they thought about their emphasis on locally sourced, locally made, locally enjoyed food, they couldn’t ignore the fact that there are so many talented people in Birmingham making things other than food.

The Buffalo Rock Makers’ Market featured select southern craftsmen showcasing their art and creations. Makers’ Market at Breakin’ Bread put makers up on a beautiful, handhewn pedestal.

The Birmingham Originals felt that it was important to extend that emphasis on local craft into other arenas as well. That’s why including a makers' market for this year’s festival was a no-brainer. According to Chris Zapalowski, President of the Birmingham Originals and Owner of Homewood Gourmet , “Now, at Breakin’ Bread you’ll not only enjoy delicious local bites and beverages, but you’ll also have the pleasure of browsing and purchasing locally made crafts and creations from some of the South’s best makers and craftsmen.”

According to Zapalowski, “Adding these craftsmen to this year’s event just felt like a natural fit – Birmingham Originals’ members are Southern makers of cuisine, so why not host talented craftsmen from around the region to celebrate the culture and creativity of the South in one event! Breakin’ Bread attendees will be able to eat local with more than 30 Birmingham restaurants offering tastings and shop local with more than 15 artists and craftsmen skilled in architecture, fine art, fashion and design selling their wares.”

Pepper Place expands walkable opportunities down the Central Corridor From the beginning, Pepper Place has been dedicated to ensuring that its neighborhood is a cohesive, walkable community. We can look back to the first part of the 20th century and see when much of the city was connected by electric street cars and broad sidewalks. Though long gone now, we see that interconnectedness as being a big part of Birmingham’s future. The more people are out of the cars and on their feet, the more opportunity they have to get to know one another and make meaningful connections. The team at Sloss Real Estate has worked hard to take that same sense of camaraderie people feel during the farmers market and expand it throughout Pepper Place all week long.

WE’VE BEEN MAKING STEADY PROGRESS TOWARD THAT GOAL, BUT HERE ARE JUST SOME OF OUR MOST RECENT TENANT AND PHYSICAL CHANGES ALONG THE PEDESTRIAN SPINE. THE COLLECTIVE

A longtime Pepper Place tenant, the Collective, moved into its new space along the Pepper Place central corridor on 28th Street in June. Previously, the space had been used for pop-up art galleries and as an event space.

THE PEPPER PLACE POP-UP SPACE

We’ve had many upstart and established businesses set up temporarily in the Pepper Place Pop-up Space over the years, and we hope to continue to provide this multipurpose venue as a laboratory of sorts to help bright-eyed entrepreneurs scale up their businesses. This year we have featured the delectable We Have Doughnuts, Alabama Outdoors, and are currently hosting the Birmingham Candy Company. Treat yourself during your stroll down the central corridor!

THE NEW PEPPER PLACE ALLEYWAY

As we’ve expanded Pepper Place to include buildings along 2nd and 3rd Avenues between 29th and 31st Streets, we’ve been mindful that creating a strong sense of place isn’t limited to the remodeling and renovation of buildings. While we put a great deal of care and thought into our landscaping, we work to apply that same level of attention to what’s outside. The alleyway extension is our most ambitious effort in this direction to date. Not only will it create a continuity of space throughout our growing footprint but it will also serve to better parallel the Jones Valley Trail, the Rotary Trail, and increase our walkability to all of downtown Birmingham. With native plants, multi-use sidewalks, ample lighting, and inviting nooks for relaxing, we can’t wait to show off our version of an alley that’s so much more than empty space.

DAY

OF TH E

DE A D

Dia de los Muertos is a celebration of remembrance and life, giving local attendees a chance to honor the lives of those loved and lost, while enjoying the unique customs of this crosscultural event. Started in 2003, after a Day of the Dead-inspired installation at Bare Hands Gallery by artist Tracy Martin, the event has grown as community members have embraced the meaning behind the event, and come together to celebrate the lives of friends, family and even influential Birmingham residents such as noted civil rights photographer James “Spider” Martin and former restaurateur Guillermo Castro. And as Dia de los Muertos has grown, the celebration has had to find new homes to accommodate the swelling crowds. According to event organizer Keri Lane, “Attendance has grown slowly but steadily over the years. Last year 4,700 people came out for the event. We expect that many this year if not a few more since the festival is on a Friday. Our festival always lands on November 2nd, no matter what day of the week. Pepper Place has been a wonderful home for the festival because we have time to prepare for the festival on site. Not only is Pepper Place a familiar Birmingham landmark, but the layout of the complex allows us to create multiple experiences in a single venue.” Countless hours go into the event from hundreds of volunteers. The first team of volunteers start in March hand making all the wonderful paper mache masks that are available for sale during the festival in the Mercado, which will be located in the Pepper Place parking lot. This year’s festival will feature altars in the lot at 29th Street and 2nd Avenue South as well as many traditional food vendors, a bar featuring cold Pepsi, Corona, wine and Hornitos Margaritas. Lane notes that “there is an amazing Mercado featuring art from many artists, our collector festival posters, the masks and other merchandise. There will be a kid’s area presented by The Birmingham Museum of Art with great crafts for the kids open until 8pm. The main stage will feature dance, the memorial roll call, mariachi, local favorites La Tropakumbiembera and Tex-Mex band from New Orleans, The Iguanas.” Not only is everyone invited to the party, but the public is encouraged to submit the names of a lost loved one for the Memorial Roll call or to participate in the public altar and pet altars. The Dia de los Muertos celebration is on Friday, November 2, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. in the streets of Pepper Place.

Certainly, you’ve heard of a sports bar, where televisions outnumber the occupants and where jerseys and autographed photos of prime athletes hang on the walls. Sports and beer are a natural fit. You can loosen your collar, cheer on your team, and blow off the week’s steam. Or maybe you’ve been to a tropically inspired bar where the neon-colored beverages come in giant bowls brimming with exotic floral arrangements. Of course you have, because what’s a better escape from the mundane than a cool drink and a warmer latitude? But what about a bar with a curvaceous selection of draught beer handles dubbed the "spinal tap"? What about a bar with a conference room in back where folks sip cocktails named after Pulitzer Prizewinning researchers and methods of scientific exploration? When the doors open at The Lumbar later this year, that’s exactly what you’ll get. According to Lumbar co-owner and PhD Candidate in Biomedical Neuroscience at UAB Rylie Hightower, “The space is designed to foster collaboration and innovation. It’s not just a bar to pull up to at the end of a horrible day. It’s place to find inspiration.” How exactly did Rylie and her collaborator and father Tim arrive at the idea for a science-themed bar? “We had a symposium at UAB where one of the speakers was instrumental in developing pediatric bone marrow transplant, which has been huge in treating pediatric leukemia. He didn’t come up with that idea in his office or in a laboratory. He threw out the idea casually when he was having drinks with friends.”

12

PEPPERPLACE.COM

With white boards scattered throughout, communal lounge seating, and a conference room called “The Incubator,” the Hightowers hope that The Lumbar will serve as a sort of melting pot for the talent and intellect that’s so abundant in Birmingham. As Rylie explains, one of the responsibilities of a PhD student is to participate in journal clubs and lab meetings where students discuss the latest research in their given fields of study. “We really want to learn with one another, and we hope The Lumbar can expand that idea to the general public. Scientific discovery is the most inspirational thing to me, and we’re using that as a launch point for everybody else to come together and be inspired.” Finding a space that embodied that spirit of coming together was essential to the success of The Lumbar. “Pepper Place is part of that strategy,” explains Rylie. “We’ve always liked the sense of community that the market brings to Birmingham. We wanted to be part of a place that includes the community and that shares that vision.” When asked if she thought she and her dad have good chemistry as business partners, Rylie explains that, “Tim is a structural engineer, and I’m a scientist. He designed The Lumbar; he built my vision. He builds things whether that’s buildings, community, or ideas. So, yeah! We've got excellent chemistry.” LEARN MORE ABOUT THE LUMBAR AT LUMBARBHAM.COM AND FOLLOW ALONG WITH THEIR PROGRESS ON INSTAGRAM @THELUMBAR.

“A dark room, loud music, exercise bikes, and everybody moving together. It’s like being at a wedding where everybody starts dancing the YMCA, but a lot cooler.”

Martin believes Pepper Place will be the perfect home for her new venture. “Every other space we looked at just missed the mark. Pepper Place is easily accessible from just about every neighborhood in Birmingham, we have ample parking, and

That’s how Tiffany Martin, owner of Ignite Cycle, describes spin class. Ignite Cycle is an indoor cycling studio offering a highintensity, high-energy rhythm ride. Immersed in the music, cyclists ride to the beat, achieving body- and mind-changing results with every pedal stroke. As Pepper Place and Sloss Real Estate’s newest fitness tenants, Martin hopes to bring a whole lot of energy, intentionality, and mindfulness to the corner of 3rd Avenue and 29th Street starting at the beginning of 2019.

enough square footage to build out showers and a social space. Not only that, but there are really great places to grab a bite or a drink to reward yourself after a solid ride.”

After moving to Birmingham last year, the search for a suitable spot to light up Ignite began in November. A fitness industry veteran in New Orleans and Cambridge, Massachusetts since 2012, Martin knew what she was looking for. “When it comes to working out, people will put up all kinds of barriers between themselves and the gym. Priority has always been removing any barriers between their butts and the bike. The commute, the couch, Netflix, happy hour, whatever. I wanted to remove as many of those barriers as possible.” One way to combat those barriers? Build a community around working out. Workouts are fairly intense, and at 45 minutes long, you sweat. It’s hard not to bond and find some commonality over that kind of workout. Both challenging and a lot of fun, the culture of community Martin hopes to foster at Ignite will help riders realize they’ve got people helping them make it up the next hill.

WELLNESS TIPS from

AERO JOE

Aero Joe’s Wellness Tips for the Holiday Season by Alison Page and Emily Tincher of Aero Joe Pilates

The holidays are upon us, and you know what that means! FOOD. And lots of it. It’s inevitable that you’re going to eat a bunch, and that’s what the holidays are for. Contrary to what you might expect from a group of fitness experts, our friends at Aero Joe Pilates are here to tell you it’s okay to indulge. Here are their tips to help you have an indulgent holiday that you won’t regret. 1) After a day of heavy eating (or really every day for that matter), drink a big glass of warm water with lemon in the morning. The lemon helps kick start liver function, while the warm water wakes up your digestive system. This will help flush unwanted toxins (like alcohol) out of the body. Lemon can also help sooth indigestion an upset stomach. 2) Consider eating a light meal before the holiday party, and then pick one or two small nibbles from the buffet line once you are there. Try to make sure every meal includes fiber, protein, greens, and healthy fats. The fiber and healthy fats will keep you fuller longer so you’re less likely to indulge later. They all help keep your blood sugar at a normal level, so there will be no drastic dips, which cause you to reach for the high sugar foods (cookies, cake) and the extra caffeine. 3) Try and move for at least 30 minutes a day, whether that’s walking, Pilates, push-ups or planks. Getting the heart rate up helps boost endorphins naturally. Moving the body, whether you break a sweat or not, also helps the digestive system along, alleviating bloating. 4) Don't deprive yourself. If you feel deprived you may compensate by overeating later on. Indulge mindfully and in moderation. Think ahead and plan out a special date to indulge in your most favorite holiday treat and enjoy it! 5) Remember to breathe. Take a little time each day to check in with yourself and "re-center." Try closing your eyes and inhaling for four counts through your nose and exhaling for six counts through your nose. Trying this breathing technique for even a couple of minutes may improve your mood and help to release tension. With the nose being a smaller aperture than the mouth, exhaling through the nose slows down the outflow of air, sending a signal to your nervous system to enter a more relaxed state. The nose also serves as a natural humidifier and filter for toxins when we breathe. 6) Visit us at Aero Joe Pilates! Our friendly studio offers extraordinarily qualified movement educators with the expertise to teach challenging workouts safely to those of all ages and abilities.
