GBAHB Remodelers
Certified Experts Professional Designations Set Professional Builders and Remodelers Apart When choosing a builder or remodeler, you want someone with the skill and expertise to do the job right. In a crowded marketplace, however, identifying a qualified professional can be difficult. That’s why the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) created professional designations that help consumers identify builders and remodelers who have committed themselves to continually improving their skills and being committed to their profession. When a homeowner selects a builder or remodeler with a NAHB professional designation, they are getting a professional with superior training, practical experience, and in-depth knowledge in their chosen specialty. Certified Graduate Builder (CGB) The CGB designation means your builder has met the prescribed standards of practice, possess at least two years building industry experience, has a proven track record of successful project management, has completed a comprehensive education curriculum, and pledges to uphold the program’s code of ethics. The CGB course is designed to emphasize business and project management skills as the key to a professional building operation. Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) The CGR course emphasizes the development of business management skills as the key to a professional remodeling operation. Remodelers holding the CGR designation meet prescribed standards of business practice, possess a minimum of five years remodeling industry experience, have a proven track record of successful remodeling projects, compete a comprehensive education curriculum, and pledge to uphold the program’s code of ethics. Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) The CAPS designation program teaches the technical, business management, and customer service skills essential for remodelers doing home modifications for the aging-in-place. The NAHB Remodelers Council, in collaboration with the AARP, developed this program to provide comprehensive, practical, market-specific information about working with older and maturing adults to remodel their homes for agingin-place. Certified Graduate Associated (CGA) The CGA Certificate program offers associate members an opportunity to enhance their 78
B-METRO.COM
knowledge of the fundamentals of the home building industry. Modeled after the CGB curriculum, this designation is attained by completing three required and three elective courses that focus on improved management skills and business performance. The CGA designation is maintained by completing one course annually. Certified Green Professional (CGP) The National Association of Home Builders’ Certified Green Professional™ designation recognizes builders, remodelers, and other industry professionals who incorporate green building principles into homes—without driving up the cost of construction. Classwork leading to the designation provides a solid background in green building methods, as well as the tools to reach customers, from the organization leading the charge to provide market-driven green building solutions to the home building industry. Master Builder (MB)/Master Remodeler (MR) The purpose of the Master Builder/Master Remodeler Program certification of the Greater Birmingham Association of Home Builders is to further enhance the professionalism of participating members and to provide the consumer with contractors of the highest professional standards. Members of the program must pass a rigorous entry process in order to receive the designation as Master Builder or Master Remodeler. They are screened by a committee of their peers who review customer, supplier, and subcontractor references; check for any current or pending litigation; and verify full liability and workman’s compensation insurance coverage. Membership is reviewed on a yearly basis, and failure to meet the program’s requirements can warrant disqualification from the program. Graduate Master Builder (GMB) The ultimate designation for the building professional, the GMB designation is for experienced veterans only. Before beginning the GMB designation process, candidates must have the CGB designation, CGR designation, CGA designation with five years of building experience, or ten years of building experience, and have competed three CGB/CGR/CGA courses. GMB course topics include risk management and insurance, negotiating, financial management, and quality construction, to name a few. They are more advanced with in-depth instruction geared for experienced building professionals.

Making a House a Home The words house and home are often used interchangeably, but there is a difference between the two. By definition, a house refers to a building in which someone lives. A home is, well, “where the heart is.” Just like the difference between a house and a home, there is a difference in energy sources used for cooking, heating and everyday living. Natural gas provides a level of comfort that can transform any house into a home -- one full of life and energy. And here’s how: Cooking. There’s a reason 97 percent of professional chefs prefer cooking with natural gas. Natural gas offers precise temperature control, little to no preheat time and great-tasting food, time and time again. While you may prefer to leave the gourmet meals to the professionals, a
natural gas stove ensures whatever you cook for dinner makes it to the table – even when the power is out. Water Heating. Natural gas water heaters can heat twice as fast as electric. What does that really mean? It means not having to choose who gets a warm bath or shower or prioritizing clean dishes, clean kids or getting the grass stains out of Sunday bests. Natural gas water heaters outperform electric models time and time again, cost less to operate and reliably provide hot showers for the entire family – even when the power is out. Home Heating. Natural gas furnaces deliver warmer, more comfortable heat than a standard electric heat pump. In fact, most heat pumps require supplemental or “emergency” heat when temperatures fall below 35 degrees. With
heat 25 degrees warmer coming out of the vent, natural gas furnaces provide consistent, reliable comfort –no matter what the temperature is outside. Laundry. Doing the laundry may not be your favorite thing to do, but natural gas dryers can help you finish the job quicker, often times drying clothes faster than electric. In fact, you can save up to 48 hours of drying time a year – that’s the equivalent of six days of vacation! Couple that with the fact that natural gas dryers cost less to operate and you might find reason to finally whistle while you work. Before you start your next remodeling project or buy a new house, consider the benefits of natural gas. Thanks to the reliable warmth it provides, natural gas can help you turn that house into a place you can comfortably call… “home.”
For more information about the benefits of natural gas appliances and current available rebates, visit spireenergy.com or call us at 800-292-4010.

OPEN CONCEPT DONE RIGHT
Your kitchen and family-living space are cut off from each other. Entertainment events don’t feel the way you want them to. Time for an open concept remodeling project, right? It can result in a wonderful life-style change, but it can also be an expensive disappointment. Here’s how to make sure yours is a smashing success. First things first. Does the value equation make sense? Before you invest time, energy and emotion in what might be, get the advice of a company well-experienced with open concept projects. A combination of discussion of your vision combined with an on-site review of the space, will yield a preliminary investment range before you’re in too deep.
Detail the full range of project requirements. Capture both lifestyle goals (example: Counter area for casual dining in sight of the TV), and technical requirements (examples: How much storage for what types of items? Type and size of appliances. Lighting needs. Furniture pieces being used. Foot traffic patterns). Explore multiple design options. Experienced designers
can show you a range of schemes that meet the project requirements. They can also clearly explain the trade-offs in terms of value, performance and appearance so you can select an optimal design for you. Make sure you see the most promising designs rendered in 3D. It is the only way to get a visceral feel for the how the new space will feel. Select materials that are functional and delight you. Kitchens, baths, laundry rooms and even closets are very much fashion-driven areas of a home. Some folks have the time and talent to serve as their own decorator but, for most, the sheer volume of product and the dramatic range of price, performance, color and style is daunting. Mistakes are usually difficult and expensive to fix so best to get a professional to help you by providing edited assortments that meet your taste and budget goals. Prepare yourself with realistic expectations about the inconvenience of construction. Even with the best of builders, multi-room projects take longer and are more disruptive than anyone would like. Make sure your builder communicates how long things will take and the nature of disruptions you’ll face along the way.

DESIGNER’S NOTES: The style of this kitchen is driven by Alabama white marble countertops, white perimeter cabinets with shaker style cabinet doors and slab-fronts drawers around an Iron Ore color shaker island with beadboard insets and a custom hood to match. Morning fog grey vintage-style backsplash tile from countertop to ceiling in a herringbone pattern provides the backdrop for professional-grade appliances and stainless apron-front sink. Open, lantern-style pendants at the island and coordinating chandelier at the dining table complete the sophisticated look.

Precision Homecrafters PROJECT PROFILE PROJECT NAME: Outdoor Oasis GOALS AND SCOPE OF WORK: The goal for this project was to create an outdoor living space for use year round and to entertain the couple’s teenage daughters and friends. To accomplish this, Precision Homecrafters created a 26’ x 22’ outdoor space that features a living area with tv and fireplace and a dining area. It also has an uncovered cooking station near the dining area. The owners wanted this new structure to blend with their existing house and also be transitional. A landscape design from a local landscape architect was incorporated into the outdoor plan as well. The result is a whole new room added to the house that provides the perfect place for teenage birthday parties or just an area to hang out. Family and friends are also enjoying the perfect place to grill out and watch football games in the fall. They can also catch the news while having a cup of coffee first thing in the morning or have a relaxing dinner while breathing fresh air for some quiet time. An initial concern was how to add a space onto the original structure and not cover the 2nd floor windows. The solution was a design that incorporated a short roof line connecting the existing house to the freestanding structure. The owners also wanted to incorporate a wood burning fireplace to be able to use it more throughout the year. TIME FRAME: Spring 2017 PRODUCT USED: The grilling station features custom concrete countertops and appliances. The Komodo Joe gas grill and built-in stainless steel drawers are from Southern Kitchen and Bath and the Big Green Egg was the owners’ previous model. The black ceiling fans were from Mayer Lighting and the teak furniture is from Summer Classics. DETAILS: Features of the outdoor living space include open rafter tails, exposed beams and roof decking, bullet lights to highlight the structure and a TV over the fireplace. The floors are pressure-treated pine that have been kiln dried, resawn and kiln-dried a second time. This results in a much more stable product with fewer knots and cleaner wood. Remote-control ceiling fans were also installed to create a comfortable atmosphere in the warmer months.

Precision Homecrafters PROJECT PROFILE
PROJECT NAME: The Lake House Kitchen GOALS: To maximize the existing space for the client by creating a kitchen with organization and a place for all of their cooking utensils and kitchen accessories. Precision Homecrafters accomplished this by creating custom cabinet organization with drawer dividers, pull-out trays, lazy susans, appliance pull-outs and hidden/recessed outlets. SCOPE OF WORK: PHC reused the existing square footage of the kitchen to create a more custom, luxurious, high-end kitchen for the clients. They also refinished the hardwood floors on the first level. TIME FRAME: Spring 2017 PRODUCT USED: Appliances: Allsouth Appliance provided all of the appliances which feature a 48 Wolf cooktop and custom hood, a Wolf double oven and an undercounter wine refrigerator and ice maker. The built-in refrigerator is a Sub-Zero with custom cabinet panels. The countertop and backsplash are Cambria quartz in the color Ella. Both were provided by CR Home. The farmhouse sink, faucet and the pot filler are all Kohler. The island pendants are from Mayer Lighting. The hardware and appliance pulls are from Schaub. FEATURES OF THE KITCHEN: Among the main features are the hidden outlets located throughout the kitchen. There are over twenty total of them and these are located within the island, recessed under the upper cabinets and are even in the hood corbels. A Keurig pull-out with k-cup tray compartment is to the right of the hood. Custom drawers are underneath the Wolf cooktop for larger pots/pans. The pantry has a lazy susan on one side and shelves on the other. There is also a custom cutting board pull-out over the trash cans. There are several appliance pull-outs in the kitchen including one for the mixer to raise up and be level with the island countertops. There is also a 2-tier flatware tray with silverware on the top and knives below.

The
Showcase
Find the perfect ideas for your perfect remodeling project at the annual Home Building and Remodeling Showcase this month. Spring is just around the corner. More than an impending change of seasons, the coming of spring for the homeowner means the imagination fires with potential projects—remodeling the kitchen, redoing the outdoors landscaping, or making an old room new again. Or perhaps it is time to begin a whole-house remodel. If you are planning a new home remodel or even just a new home project, the Home Building & Remodeling Showcase Friday, February 9th through Sunday, February 11th at the Hoover Met Complex is sure to provide inspiration as well as education about where to begin. The Showcase will give attendees a chance to connect with some of the premier businesses in the area that can help with home build-

ing and home improvement projects. The Showcase is also the perfect opportunity to hear from experts in the field who can offer insight on making your home more beautiful and efficient. Tickets are $8 each, and children 12 and under are free. Tickets are available for purchase online at birminghambuilder.com and at the door. All major credit cards are accepted. All current and former Military personnel will receive free admission with military ID. Hours of operation, Friday, February 9th through Sunday, February 11th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visit www.birminghambuilder.com or Home Building & Remodeling Showcase on Facebook for more information. The Hoover Met Complex is at 100 Ben Chapman Dr. in Hoover.
These exhibitions feature an array of product vendors and professionals, so homeowners can check out the newest trends and meet the experts who can bring those ideas to life. All that information comes at a price though. Home shows can be daunting for the uninitiated. Large buildings, plenty of vendors and limited time make it hard to determine where to go, who to talk to and what questions to ask. So what should homeowners look for when attending home shows? What questions should they ask?
First you need to determine what you are after: product info, design ideas, pricing queries, or an accurate view of what your return on investment might be. Maybe you are interested in green/sustainable products or plans. No matter what you are interested in, it also helps to understand background like how square footage, utility bills, and other things can be impacted by renovation plans. Home shows are a good way to see some of the new trends and products that are out there. When you go in with the game plan of visiting a vendor whose products tie into your renovation plans, you can maximize

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: George is a past president of the GBAHA and his company has won numerous remodeling awards over the past 19 years.
ASK GEORGE Q. How do I make selections on items that are more timeless in nature than the latest trend, but still produces a wow factor. A:Try to make selections that are more neutral such as lighter cabinetry or walls which tend to provide more options for spaces (or furniture) in the future. Heavier, more complicated or busy patterns on countertops, walls or even tile can “date” a space. Keeping it simple with regard to selections allows for more variety later on down the road.
Q. I have several rooms in my home that get limited natural light and are dark all the time. What options are available to brighten this space. A: If you have limited natural light in your space, you will need to focus on lightening the room with paint. You could use whiter tones such as Sherwin Williams Snowbound or a neutral, but light taupe, Collonade Gray. You could also focus on lighter (in color) furnishings and going with sheers or translucent shades instead of heavier drapes. Adding 6” can lights in the ceiling is also a great way to create more lighting within the ceiling itself.

your focus. There will likely be products and approaches you have not seen before in a home improvement store. Interacting with the professionals in vendor booths is a great way to get a sense of their personality and how well they communicate. That is a major concern if someone is going to be working on your home for a significant amount of time. Go for inspiration, keep your mind open to new possibilities, but do your homework after the show. Home shows are a terrific place to start your research as you can gather as much information on companies and their products/services as you want and need. You are able to visit with representa-

tives from various companies and get their expert opinions on your upcoming project. But remember you will really learn the most after a more thorough home visit for estimating purposes. But the home show is an excellent start. You might go to the show armed with a photo album containing photos of the potential project space, and also a fact sheet containing critical information about the project. You can’t do too much planning when it comes to a remodeling project, and that mantra should extend to the home show itself. Make a plan. You know why you’re going, so plan out your time at the show. Have
an idea of which exhibitors (or which types of vendors) you want to visit and find out where they are located on the show floor. From there, you can formulate a plan of attack. Go back for seconds. Make another pass and if you’re interested in a product, stop and talk with the exhibitor and set up an appointment to meet at a later date. Get ideas. One of the best things about home shows is the opportunity vendors have to showcase new products and designs that spur inspiration among homeowners. So even if you don’t have a specific project in mind when you arrive at the show, you just might by the time you leave.

Remodel Smarter: Five Ways to Save with Energy Efficiency Renovating or remodeling a home requires planning and careful consideration about the design, materials and improving your quality of life. Make changes today that will maximize energy efficiency and save money in your renewed spaces. Where to begin? Remodels can be daunting. Here are five easy ways to improve comfort from your remodel:
1. Design: Design matters. Layout and placement can have a direct result on how energy moves through your home. Start with window placement – position windows where you can benefit from cross-ventilation and access to light. Attic ventilation can have an impact on roof design and landscaping. A strategically-placed deciduous tree (one that loses its leaves in the fall) can provide shade in the summer and allow in warming sunlight in the winter.
2. Windows: Choose energy-efficient windows such as double- or triple-paned models. The additional panes of glass
create trapped air space, providing a higher insulating value. Even more efficient windows use argon gas between the panes for increased insulating values. Low-emissivity (low-E) windows incorporate a coating applied between panes that absorbs and reflects radiant heat and ultraviolet rays.
3. Appliances: If you’re upgrading your home, chances are it’s time to upgrade your appliances. Choose Energy Star® products, which can use 10-50 percent less energy than standard models. In addition to refrigerators and ovens, consider upgrading to electric induction cooking.
4. Heat pumps: Energy-efficient heat pumps are essential for remodeling flexibility. No flames or fumes mean you don’t have to add vent pipes or flues that take up space. Plus, you’ll have more flexibility in placing the indoor portion of the heat pump system. Maximize your new system’s energy efficiency with a programmable thermostat.
5. Water heaters: Electric water heating is fast, clean, quiet and efficient – something you want for the second-largest energy user in your home behind heating and cooling. Electric water heaters are matchless – they have no pilot light to light or re-light. Plus, there are no gas fumes to worry about and no need for venting. This allows you to locate the equipment almost anywhere in your home. Heat pump water heaters are a smart choice because they are the most efficient way to heat water. Cut hot water costs in half with this energy-efficient technology, amounting to over $150 in savings year after year for the average household.
When renovating these days, think about how smart home technology can work to make your home more comfortable and energy efficient. Learn how smart technology works in the home and purchase smart technology products at Smartneighbor.com/neighborhood.
