Who do you trust with your look?

What do we want in a salon or spa? What are customers looking for when they choose a salon or a stylist? What do women and men really want?

These are the questions hair stylists, skin care specialists, massage therapists, make-up artists, and estheticians have to answer every day when they come to work. To a salon and spa patron many of the questions turn on the notion of relationships. As customers we want to develop relationships with the people who cut our hair, beautify our skin and massage away the stresses of the day. Those relationships make the beauty business what it is.

It is a big business, both in Birmingham and nationwide, and yet at its core a very personal business. Stylists and estheticians really get to know their customers and the relationships can become extraordinarily meaningful for both.

A note on the business of beauty: According to a survey conducted by the Professional Beauty Association, all of the major personal appearance occupations are projected to post job growth stronger than the overall economy between 2008 and 2018. The number of skin care specialist jobs is projected to jump 51 percent, while hairdresser, hairstylist and cosmetologist positions are expected to increase by 31 percent. That is nearly three times the estimated rate of growth of total U.S. employment (11 percent) during the same period.
