2022 AfrikImpact Program

Page 1

On behalf of the African Leadership Group (ALG) planning and organizing committee, Board of Directors, and all our community members, we want to extend a heart-felt thank you for coming to Afrik Impact 2022. This year’s theme is Immigration, Integration and Civic Participation. We are celebrating accomplishments and success stories in our community.

As always, you will see shining examples of African immigrants at their very best, contributing greatly to this nation, our state, and our local communities. This is what the world needs to see. This is what the world needs to know…. This is what ALG is all about!

PAPA DIA’S STORY | THE FORMATION OF AFRICAN LEADERSHIP GROUP (ALG)

WELCOME!

When I had an opportunity to come to the United States in 1998, I had one goal in mind; work and send money back to support the rest of my family in Senegal, West Africa. As 1 of 13 children, my family struggled to make ends meet; I was determined to do everything I could, to change the narrative. Like many immigrants, I was faced with some challenges. Back in Senegal, I studied law; however, I couldn’t continue on this path due to my limited English-speaking skills. I got a job at the Tattered Cover Bookstore and found myself studying all over again. My exposure to books and immersion in the world of literacy helped with my reading, writing, and speaking skills. After leaving the Tattered Cover Bookstore, I got a job as a bank teller, where I worked for the next 18 years. During my time at the bank, I learned about financial resources that were not readily accessible to the immigrant community, though they were necessary for successful integration. Information about government assistance was readily available, but nothing existed to help us achieve the American dream. During my time at the bank, I was approached by a lot of African Immigrants who had questions not only about banking but also about other challenges (education, legal, etc.) they faced in trying to integrate into the American culture. I would help them out the best I could, but this attracted dozens of to the bank each week. When the bank started to express concern, I knew it was time for me to create an outlet that will continue to help people outside of my workplace because as I looked around, there were no other entities/organizations that focused on helping skilled immigrants integrate. In 2006, the African Leadership Group was formed to facilitate the professional integration of African immigrants.

With a focus on social, educational and economic impact, the African Leadership Group hosts a major community event. The purpose of this yearly event is to celebrate our collective accomplishments, recognize our community champions, and cast the vision for our next year of policy and advocacy work. In addition, it is part of our public persuasion campaign to have the State of Colorado issue a proclamation to officially establish August as African Immigrant Month. In all of this, we celebrate loud and proud, the positive impact of African people in Colorado and honor our contributions.

PURPOSE

The leadership initiative provides public speaking training classes every Tuesday in addition to a 9-month leadership program to prepare African immigrants for meaningful engagement in education, civic, and community processes.

The process of leaving home and immigrating to a new country is not without challenges; but for young people trying to become acclimated in American society, immigration is especially difficult.

To learn more and stay engaged please visit us at: www.usalg.org

The African Leadership Group’s programing offers opportunities for children and adult immigrants to address the diverse issues within the community, adjusting to the cultural differences in their new environment while accessing resources to help strengthen the rich entrepreneurial efforts of men and women who come to the country in search of a better life. The group operates with several initiatives, and features activities that help empower African immigrant communities to achieve long-term goals.

The African Leadership Group value our strong partnerships with city officials, governmental entities, donors and sponsors. Your continued support helps us reach our goal!

Following these business success, Governor Polis committed himself to making sure other Coloradans had the opportunity to pursue their dreams. He co-founded Techstars, a startup accelerator that mentors’ entrepreneurs from all walks of life, and Patriot Boot Camp, which helps veterans start their own small businesses after coming home from their service. In addition to his career as an entrepreneur, much of Governor Polis’ adult life has been focused on improving public educa tion. He served six years on the State Board of Education, where he worked to raise pay for teachers and reduce class size for students. He also founded several public charter schools for at-risk youth, and served as superintendent of one of them, the New America School, which helps immigrants earn their high school diploma.

MICHAEL B. HANCOCK MAYOR, CITY AND COUNTY OF DENVER

Michael B. Hancock is serving his third term as Denver’s 45th mayor and is the second African American to hold the position. He is a member of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, where he chairs the Communications and Transportation committee, is Vice President of the National Conference of Democratic Mayors and is a member of the African American Mayor’s Association.

Mayor Hancock and his Administration would help enable Denver’s recovery from the Great Recession, fixing Denver’s budget challenges, innovating tax payer money-saving efficiencies in government, investing in infrastructure, raising the minimum wage for Denver’s workforce, and prioritizing children, families, and small and minority- and women-owned small businesses.

Mayor Hancock’s economic recovery committee took shape even before vaccines were in the arms of Denver residents, planning ahead for the needs of families and businesses that would need sustained support to rebound after more than a year of devastating losses of lives and livelihoods.

The Mayor is a die-hard Denver Broncos fan. He earned a B.A. from Hastings College and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Colorado, Denver.

Mayor Hancock has never looked away from a challenge – meeting the needs of the community by helping organizations with fiscal management, civic engagement, and better governance. He honed those skills in the non-profit and private sectors and brought them to the Denver City Council, where he served for eight years including two terms as City Council President.

Mayor Hancock pledged that Denver would build back better – a promise he had fulfilled once before in the years following the Great Recession. Prioritizing public safety, housing and economic recovery – he crafted a bond package with infrastructure investments that will bring long term benefits to compliment federal aid to sustain Denver’s economic recovery and growth, expand opportunity, and ensure prosperity for more residents, businesses and families into the future.

Mayor Hancock is the proud father of three children and doting grandfather to an adorable granddaughter.

Equity is the foundation of his public service and the intention that drives his leadership, from the start of his career at the Denver Housing Authority and the National Civic League, to becoming the youngest President of an Urban League chapter in America, to today as a third-term Mayor of the City and County Denver.

The strategic expansion of Denver International Airport created jobs and elevated Denver as a thriving city and global leader in industry and a sought-after destination to live and do business.

Raised in Denver since he was 10 months old, Mayor Hancock found his passion and purpose in serving the city and the people he loves.

The Hancock Administration’s prudent fiscal planning, strong community partnerships, progressive housing and social and economic support programs, and emergency management operations response enabled Denver to respond quickly and nimbly to the impacts of the virus and the civil unrest born from a simultaneous national reckoning on race.

When the deadly COVID-19 pandemic paralyzed cities around the world, Mayor Hancock took immediate action, supporting a public health order to protect the health and welfare of residents, first responders and businesses. His Administration secured millions of pieces of PPE for frontline workers, funding for programs to assist residents who need help paying for basic needs and stood up emergency around the clock shelter for people experiencing homelessness.

Former Army Ranger and Bronze Star recipient Jason Crow grew up working class -- he worked minimum-wage jobs during high school and enlisted in the National Guard and worked construction to help pay his way through college. After graduating, Jason joined the active duty Army and served our country in Iraq and Afghanistan. Even when he rose to the rank of Captain, Jason always remembered what it was like to march in the boots of an Army private. For Jason, this is the essence of servant leadership – always putting the needs of those you lead ahead of your own – and it continues to drive his approach today.

Now Jason has taken his servant leadership to Congress where he represents Colorado’s 6th Congressional District and serves on the House Small Business and Armed Services Committees and the House Permanent Select Committee on WhetherIntelligence.combatting the climate crisis, creating better, higher-paying jobs for hardworking families, or preventing gun violence, Jason is focused on putting Colorado and our country ahead of politics and partisanship.

Rep. Diana DeGette is a fourth-generation Coloradan and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives representing Colorado’s 1st Congressional District. Now in her thirteenth term, DeGette serves as a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and is chair of the committee’s Oversight and Investigations panel. She is also a member of the House Natural Resources committee, which is leading the charge to combat the global climate crisis.

When Jason returned home, he looked for ways to continue to give back. Jason struggled to get his veterans benefits and knew others were having similar challenges transitioning from service to civilian life so he went to work helping veterans across Colorado.

In Congress, DeGette is fighting to protect reproductive rights, preserve our public lands and lower health care costs. She currently serves as co-chair of the House ProChoice Caucus as well as the Congressional Diabetes Caucus.
