INTRO DUC TION


This portfolio is designed to display all of my external work and development throughout the first semester of year 3 in relation to the External Positioning brief of the BA (Hons) Graphic Design course at the University for the Creative Arts, Epsom. It is designed to flow naturally as a narrative throughout the duration of the semester and surrounding months yet there are many areas of overlap; particularly within my work about ‘That Design’ a large self-directed brief that is covered heavily within this portfolio. I aim to show the way that I am interacting with the outside design community and how I am positioning myself in terms of readiness for employment as I graduate from University at the end of the next semester. I have always been the sort of person who is able to work well in all kinds of scenarios including individually as well as within a group, but I do feel that I am particularly strong in driving myself towards my own set goals and objectives. I’m very committed to design work and am constantly thinking about the way that things work or the way that they have been produced and displayed. Through reading this portfolio and viewing the work within, you should be able to obtain a clear picture of my characteristics as a graphic designer. Within this portfolio I will outlay my own personal methods of self-promotion and my research methods into existing companies and design practices. I hope to show a visual representation of the skills that I have learnt and how they will distinguish who I am as a designer when I enter the industry full-time. There are seven main areas within this portfolio as detailed below: Web Development - My personal endeavours into web design and development through the creation of websites such as thatdesign.co.uk. Promotional Practices - My methods of self-promotion with networks online. Competition Briefs - Design development and thought process for two competition briefs, RSA postage stamps and a Penguin Book cover. Freelance Work - Logo design and development within freelance practice. Events and Networking - Evaluation of the importance for networking and attending design events and conferences. Company Focus - Particular companies that I follow and am engaged with. Future Plans - A plan for leading upto and after I leave University. The areas listed above will collectively all work together into shaping the start of my path into my design career as I graduate from University at the end of the next semester.


SKILLS THEN & NOW


Considering this portfolio is all about my skills as a designer and how they will benefit me and be implemented externally in preparation for when I graduate from University, I have created an information graphic that displays my confidence in a particular range of skills between 2009 and the start of 2012, the time I have spent at University. The two areas of improvement that have been the most significant are within my web development and typography skills. I have always had a passion for the two, however within web development I have never had the skills until now and within typography I was nowhere near as meticulous about every aspect of typography as I am today. My personal learning towards web development is covered heavily within this portfolio. The two areas that I feel have not changed on such as grand scale are my digital skills as a designer and my photography. These have always been my two strongest skills and I have spent a lot of time focusing on other areas of my practice to improve. Within my digital skills, I learnt a lot myself through my School years well before College. Over the years they have only improved in small areas, but I will say that my use of these skills is a lot more considered now than it used to be.



WEB DEV. From the very beginning of May earlier this year, I started to learn the basics of web design with HTML and CSS. I had experience making websites using Adobe Flash at a basic-intermediate level but I had always wanted to learn how to properly code a website rather than make it using a visual based application such as Flash or Dreamweaver. After attending just one workshop on HTML and CSS methods, I was hooked. I only needed to know the basic principles and from there I could learn as I went along with building particular pages. I found that I learnt most from internet resources such as forums and tutorials after countless Google searches related to different elements within web development. This method of self-initiated learning has been extremely useful in my own personal development but can sometimes be very frustrating to not be able to get an answer from someone with me in the room for an issue at hand. Because of this, I have dedicated myself to consistently working with the web in order to learn as much as I can whilst I am still in education and whilst I have the time to work on my own projects. A few months ago, I would have shied away from web design as I didn’t feel I knew very much about the technicalities of it, but since then, I’ve developed like a storm and I am totally enthusiastic about web development playing a big part in my future career. For a while I was a little reluctant to jump straight into the web side of design as I still wanted to focus mainly on the production of products for print. However, over the past few months I have begun embracing web design as a main part of my practice and will be putting a massive amount of effort into learning new technologies over the coming year. I’m not ruling out printed media altogether, I’m just focusing myself to one area of design as a means of developing my skills for my portfolio and to increase my employability for my future career.

The information graphics on the page to the left show a visualisation of two aspects towards my web development. The first shows how much I have adapted to web design between the months of May and December 2011, categorised into two areas; enthusiasm and knowledge. This is because I have always appreciated good web design even though I haven’t necessarily had the knowledge to be able to understand how it was built. I feel the two categories need to be listed to show how my passion has grown over such a small amount of time. From the very start, my knowledge was extremely basic but I can definitely say that I have been able to steadily improve this over the space of a few months. The second graphic shows a timeline of how much I have learnt about a few different technologies used within the web. I have also included some predictions of what I would like to learn next and when I think I will be able to dedicate some quality time towards improving my skills. I have rated my skills as either: basic, intermediate, confident or advanced. I am classing my skills as confident when I feel comfortable that I could work on a commissioned brief for a client using these particular skills. The other skill levels are pretty straight forwardly labelled.

“I’m not ruling out printed media altogether, I’m just focusing myself to one area of design” HTML and CSS have been the most developed areas as they are the fundamental basics towards creating websites. The HTML allows me to add the content and the CSS is a way of styling how it will look. I have been staying up to date with CSS3, the latest version of CSS as I know that I will need to have a great understanding of this for my future career whether I am designing websites or designing for websites. JavaScript is a method of writing scripts that complete automated tasks for the end user. This can be a simple element such as an automatic smooth scrolling web page, or it may be a complex set of instructions that gather certain data about the viewer of the web page and

then visualise it onscreen. I am hoping to start learning this in January and predict that I will be able to grasp onto the concept fairly easily based on my previous experiences with HTML and CSS but I know that it will take a lot longer to become advanced in skill.

“I’d rather set myself up for the next 30 years of this industry now than to fall behind at a later date” By applying this method of self-initiated learning I should be able to show that I can be independent within my progression of skills and also increase my portfolio to better my chances of employment. I see web design and design for the screen (often described as digital design, though technically incorrect as digital methods can be used for print whereas design for screen describes items solely viewed on the screen, such as icons, user interfaces and websites) as the future evolution of graphic design as more and more products are being developed for consumers that rely on screen based input and usability. For example, there are so many devices for reading books such as the Amazon Kindle and Apple iPad. As the technology progresses this will inevitably become the most common method of reading for it’s properties of being able to store thousands of texts on one device, the ability to search through chapters, multiple bookmarks and annotations and of course the methods of downloading more books at the touch of a button. The technological advancements can be compared to that of the music industry with devices and services like the iPod and the iTunes music store. I feel it is purely common sense to embrace the digital revolution within design as it is the direction that we are all heading in. I’d rather set myself up for the next 30 years of this industry now than to fall behind at a later date for not progressing further. As I said, I’m not ruling out more traditional methods of design, I am simply embracing the current and future practices.


In April this year, I had the idea of creating a Graphic Design collective between Sinéad Birmingham, James Martin, Russell Beswick and Myself as a way of promoting ourselves as designers and setting us up for early exposure into the industry as well as using the website as a way of building up my web design skill set. I wanted to make something that would link us all together as a way of supporting each other with a large portfolio of work and also having a consistently updated blog at the core. The main driving force behind my idea was that if four people were to contribute to and promote one location collectively, then it would end up more successful than if only one person was running it. I believe that having four people located at one main point of contact will eventually become a benefit to each of us individually as anyone who discovers one of us will subsequently discover all four of us. The others agreed on this strategy and so, That Design was born.

“I wanted to make something that would link us all together” In the first few talks of creating a collective, the idea was received well and we were all excited to start something, but then talk died down and it was as if the project had failed before it had even started. In the beginning of July, I started to create some sketches and designs for the site before I made an initial start at building it using HTML and CSS. I’ve spent in total over 200 hours designing and developing the site over a period of 4-5 months including a redesign for the official launch on November 11. The blogs are built using the WordPress MultiUser (WPMU) content management system and use a system of syndication between the four blogs to link up to one main blog. Each post that is published, automatically sends a tweet with a link to the blog post from the user account @thatdesign to our list of followers on Twitter.

I chose to work with WordPress over other blogging systems such as Tumblr or Blogger because of the greater amount of developmental control and the higher status of professionalism that it embodies as well as the great benefit of WordPress MultiUser which allows administration of multiple blogs from one account and one MySQL database.

“I aim to communicate my plans to start employment within the design industry” To the right I have included a timeline of emotions since the start of That Design. I am pleased to say that the whole process thus far has been extremely positive and only really showing signs of negativity early on when the idea was still quite vague. I definitely feel a big sense of growth with the whole venture to the extent that I no longer describe it as a project but more of who I am as a designer. I also see That Design growing in online presence as we build up our blog posts and user following over the course of the next year. It would a great pleasure to convert That Design into something more of a design studio than just an online representation of us. I’ve always dreamed of building my own studio and so far, this is the closest I have come to making the step to forming my own company. I fully appreciate that it will take a large amount of effort and financial planning to even come close to having a functioning studio which is why I am only making sure to think of it as something to aim for and not something to rely on. Throughout this portfolio, I aim to communicate my plans to start employment within the design industry. At the current stage, That Design is not only a way of expressing my passion towards design, but also an addition to my portfolio and an enhancement to my employability as I feel that it shows self initiative within personal goals and objectives as well as team skills and networking.



Early Stages At the very start of That Design, I created some sketches of how I thought the site could look and also displayed the main features that I felt were necessary to the success of the project in it’s initial stages. The two most prominent areas of the site are the portfolio pages and the blogs. The portfolio displays selected pieces of our work individually within our own portfolio sections as well as an area that collects our strongest pieces into one portfolio.

Above, I have displayed my initial sketches for the home page layout and to the right I have displayed my digital developments of these sketches. There is a heavy amount of concentration to the typography across the design of each page as I wanted to display my skills as a typographer within my web design skills as they will emphasize my attention to detail to potential viewers which may include other designers and possible clients or maybe even employers.

I have created these two methods of displaying our work to cater for different viewer requirements. Firstly, the collection of our strongest pieces together is a benefit to each of us as it will place all of our work next to each other to show all of our strengths at the best they can possibly look. It is also a way for potential viewers to compare our individual design styles and production methods side by side and to show a diverse range in style. The individual portfolio helps potential viewers to see each of our design styles in one place and as a way of showcasing more work in a more coherent manner.

I have also included a large image that will appear above the fold (same meaning in web design as in print design, though translates to the break in screen size before scrolling) as a method of introducing the viewer to the site on a visual impact rather than with a mass amount of reading.


Initial developments for the site included working with a dynamic grid that would change depending on the content.

Later developments simplified to include more imagery and larger typography across each page in a uniform style.



SITE LOOK &FEEL

The screenshot to the left shows how the original design of the home page looked in a browser window before the official launch (later documented within the portfolio) on November 11. I have created some strict rules for the layout, in particular with the typography across the whole site design. For the headings, I have used a typeface called Bebas Neue which is a completely open source web font designed by Dharma Type and available from Font Squirrel (http://fontsquirrel.com) which therefore does not require a paid license to use online and allows me to keep the site completely within legalities. The rest of the site uses Helvetica which is a standard web enabled font across all major browsers and operating systems. There are only four different variations within the colour of the two typefaces, three of which are varying shades of grey and the fourth being the main deep red that I have selected. The strict guidelines that I have set include limited text size variations and a distinct hierarchy across each page such as the heading text which displays a message relevant to the current page, leading into a descriptive piece of text giving further detail about the content on the page and then the content itself located further down. The menu is constant throughout every page and aims to be a fairly straight forward way of navigating around the site. I have split the site into five main areas: Contributors - A page to display each of us as designers including our contact details and also a short bio about us. Portfolio - The location of our work for potential visitors to see. Store - Not currently functioning but is planned to be the location for visitors to purchase prints of our work including collaborations between each of us as a collective. Blogs - The location of each of our individual blogs which automatically feed into one main blog. The visitor has the ability to see our unique posts or all of us collectively. Talk to us - A method for visitors to reach out to us directly via email regarding commissions, information or even just for a healthy chat about design. I hope to keep to this limited structure for the site for as long as is needed in order to not over complicate the user experience or clutter the design.


Implementing PHP Having fully set the site up in HTML, I then went back and recoded the whole website to include some PHP elements that I had learnt along the way to improve the ability to edit it at a later date. As you can see in the screenshots to the left, the amount of lines of code have been dramatically shortened on the portfolio pages by the addition of the following line of code: <? phpi include (“elements/thumbnails.php”)?> This enables certain elements on repeating pages to be automatically added to other similar pages meaning that if I were to edit the amount of thumbnails for example, I would only need to edit the one “thumbnails.php” page rather than every page that has thumbnails included.

“I hope to show flexibility within my skill set as a designer” I don’t often start fresh with a piece of work but by recoding the whole site using this method, I was able to remove hundreds of lines of code and it also allowed me to learn the HTML to a greater depth by the power of repeating the process over and over again. In the long run, it will save me a great amount of time when it comes to updating sections as a whole. By learning new methods of web development such as PHP I hope to show flexibility within my skill set as a designer when interacting with clients and potential employers. I believe that by jumping into all sorts of different processes and techniques, I will be able to realise the methods that best suit my practice and area of the industry that will suit me. For the moment, I am very much experimenting within different technologies of web development; mostly HTML and CSS, however I am aware of the following which at some point in the future I would like to begin to learn: JavaScript, JQuery, Python, Ruby, XML, SQL, AJAX, JSON and RSS.

WPMU

Using WordPress MultiUser (WPMU) was a little bit different to using the regular installation of WordPress but it has definitely been a lot more useful and powerful for the needs I have with That Design. Mainly, it allows me to create multiple blogs from just one MySQL database and one installation of WordPress but still retaining a massive amount of admin control over each blog and user that is created. Having the MultiUser installation also allows me to network activate certain enhancements and plugins all in one go rather than having to perform the same process over a number of different blogs. It’s not too much hassle now if I was to do that, but in the future there may be a lot more users and contributors to That Design, so I feel it is definitely better to prepare for something that could potentially expand. WordPress is such an amazing tool for building websites as it allows complete control over the design and function of the site, yet retains a full back-end content management system for posting and structuring the site as a whole. It is also updated fairly regularly meaning that I will always be using the latest version that conforms to today’s web standards and it is extremely reliable and stable as a platform.

One of the great benefits of WordPress is the extensive library of plugins that are available to install from the many developers that are sharing their software. I have been using a lot of statistical plugins in order to see how many visitors are being attracted to the site as well as where they are coming from and what links they are clicking. Most notably, I have been using Jetpack 1.2.2 for collating all the statistics from the blog. There is a standard correlation between the difference in views depending on the frequency of blog posts as you would expect, which is why I have developed a personal goal to make sure that there is a new post on the main blog once per day throughout the start of 2012 in order to drive viewing numbers much higher.


MAKING SHAPES: VIRAL VIDEO

This is a sample blog post to demonstrate the type of content that I have posted and will continue to post to the blog. I like to show my own personal opinion and observation towards particular advertisements. In this case, companies using viral ad campaigns on websites such as YouTube. I came across this the other day and thought it was awesome! Except for the end. It’s a video of this guy, JayFunk who does a sitting-down-bodypopbreakdance known as finger tutting but with added visual effects thrown into the mix. The video itself looks well produced, with high quality definition in the picture and well constructed lighting, not to mention the onscreen graphics as well. But, as I said, the ending spoils it for me. Watch the video and I’ll explain why.

It’s made by Samsung? This style of advertising really annoys me for two reasons. Firstly, when you’re watching the video, the whole way through you are thinking “wow this is really awesome” I’ve got to show this to someone later. But when the corporate logo or voiceover kicks in at the end, you feel like you’ve been tricked (I do anyway). You feel as though, the video isn’t quite as independent to the user as you originally thought, almost as though it should be awesome because there’s probably been a massive budget to work with. Because it’s on YouTube you automatically assume that it should be coming from a user who edited something in their bedroom and just uploaded it. Not from a global company. I feel as though it’s a cheap but very clever way of advertising products. No one enjoys to watch a TV show and have it interrupted by adverts, they want to carry on watching what they chose. People enjoy

watching videos on YouTube are making the choice on what video to watch, so why not turn the adverts into videos that people want to see over and over again? It’s a clever solution that works incredibly well if it’s done right with a good video. People will choose to watch it and will actively take the time to share it out with other people. It annoys me because that’s exactly what I’m doing right now. It’s like going to the arcade and being enticed by the machines to win money, but most of the time you never win. You have your fun. They get their plays and subsequently, money. You walk away feeling slightly less of yourself. Yet, we do this to ourselves over and over again because the enjoyment supersedes the loss that we feel afterwards. That’s why it’s clever advertising.

“why not turn the adverts into videos that people want to see over and over again?” It’s cheap – still big budgets but in terms of advertising, it’s cheap – because once the video has been made and a few relevant companies have been paid to promote it, it’s set. The company doesn’t have to pay for every time the ad is shown like they would on TV, they’re not limited in a time-frame of let’s say 30 seconds and once the views start rolling in, they don’t have to worry too much about promoting the brand. People will just recognise it from last night’s session on YouTube. The second reason that these viral adverts annoy me, is the way in which people recognise them. Take for instance, JayFunk. Not many people will know that the guy in the ad is called JayFunk and that he has many videos of himself in the bedroom-edit style that we are so familiar with on YouTube. In fact, this was probably how he was found by Samsung. Great! He get’s a big pay cheque. Samsung get their awesome video and sell loads of products. However, JayFunk will probably never make anything else for Samsung as they don’t want to repeat the same campaign. He won’t be able to make something for any other company because that idea has already been used. Furthermore, he won’t be able to make anything in the same style for his own personal YouTube account because it will never look as good as the one Samsung made for him and people will probably say that “he is just copying the Samsung advert”. Personally, I feel sorry for JayFunk and all the other people who were making these sorts of videos before Samsung came and bought the idea.

“he has many videos of himself in the bedroom-edit style that we are so familiar with on YouTube” I’ve been on YouTube and found an old video from JayFunk dated October 2009 with just over one million views (almost three million short of the Samsung one, uploaded in June this year) which does indeed show him, in his bedroom making a video of his Finger Tutting. I feel as though, anyone who comes across this video will probably look down on it and say it’s nowhere near as good as the Samsung one. Which is true. But without this, there wouldn’t be a Samsung one.


T-Mobile are another company that use this viral video strategy to advertise themselves. Their videos have the idea of people using their mobile phones to document the ‘now’. But do many people ever think that their ‘ads’ are just a rip-off of Improv Everywhere‘s videos who popularised the whole flash mob ‘missions’ back in 2001? T-Mobile made this in October 2010.

But which video is remembered more? Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the videos, I’m just pointing out what a large budget can do for all aspects of it.



I was lucky enough to obtain a free ticket to the last day of the TYPOLondon conference from a connection with Sallyanne. I have always enjoyed watching conference lectures online such as the TED talk series. Naturally, I was very enthusiastic towards seeing this style of lecture first hand at the University of London. Before heading to the long day ahead, I researched into each of the designers to decide which would be most beneficial for me to see. I was planning to get a lot of coverage from each of the lectures to then make some blog posts for That Design as an experiment to see whether it would help to drive more traffic to the site and give us more exposure as designers. I felt that it would also be useful to keep a record of each of the talks individually as they would no doubt be somewhat inspiring and informative.

TYPOLondon Multiple Blog Posts As I had planned to do so from the start, I took notes and recorded all of the lectures that I had attended throughout the day and then converted them into blog posts for That Design. Overall, I posted 10 blog posts and an 11th roundup post that lists links to all of the posts individually. The settings I have created on the blog automatically send a tweet to the Twitter account whenever a post is published which ended up very successful in generating a lot of traffic to the blog over the three days that followed. The day I published all of the posts, there were 850 visitors to the whole site, followed by 711 and 589 over the next two days. Many of those visitors came from Twitter pages that were search results of terms such as ‘typolondon’ typo talks’ ‘graphic design lectures’. Twitter has been an extremely useful tool within promotion of the site and is something that I will continue to utilise in the future. That Design was also featured on Fontblog.de in their own roundup of blog posts related to TYPOLondon 2011. CHIP KIDD: WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?

Throughout his story of Jurassic Park he sounded nothing but helpless and lost. Thankfully, he has done extremely well and has become one of the most successful book cover designers of the 90s. He told many more stories of his relationships with clients about designs in his usual hilarious manner including a particular book called ‘You Better Not Cry: Augusten’s Christmas Stories’ by Augusten Burroughs.

Quite possibly the funniest lecture I’ve ever seen about anything typographical or design related came from the great New Yorker, Chip Kidd as he closed TYPOLondon 2011 in the Logan Hall. I’d never seen a talk from him before but had seen pieces of his work online and in books. I would never have guessed just how brilliantly eccentric and ‘fabulous’ he would be though! Opening with a story of his new mantra which he acquired from an overheard conversation in a lunchtime queue at KFC in New York. “I was standing in line at lunchtime, in the Kentucky Fried Chicken off Union Square. I was in the back of the line, at the front there was this skinny little guy who was ordering – I would like 3 buckets of 21 piece original recipe chicken please.” “The woman behind the counter snapped – Is that for here or to go?!” “Excuse me? How the HELL would I sit here and eat three buckets of 21 piece original recipe chicken. Here. By myself.” To which the woman behind counter did not miss a beat and said “BITCH. I DON’T KNOW YOUR LIFE!”

Unfortunately his cover was not actually chosen as the publishers thought that it looked as though Santa was showing the little girl his penis. As if the guns weren’t anything to be worried about. His later ideas including dressing pets in festive clothing wasn’t chosen and to Chip’s shock, they revealed that they had solved the cover in-house. The new cover displayed a Santa figure with his back facing, wearing nothing but his boots and his jacket which is currently flashing wide open. “Penis and all”. Chip ended his talk discussing his current work on a Batman graphic novel that he is working on with illustrator Dave Taylor, called Batman: Death by Design which will be available next year. Chip was an excellent end to a

“This is calling your audience a moron.” Chip recalled of a story he learnt at School with a simple explanation. Show or Tell. It means to either show something, such as a photo of an Apple. Or to tell something, such as the word Apple. But you should NEVER do both. This is calling your audience a moron. Simple but effective solution. This continued onto the work which he has been doing for the past 25 years, book covers. He told stories of his relationships with the clients and the authors and in the particular case of Jurassic Park, his tough dealings with legalities. The cover for Jurassic Park had a picture of a partially complete skeleton of a dinosaur drawn completely in solid black ink on a white background with text around the side. The cover was successfully produced through the company Chip was working for and the rights to all the work was bought by the publishers in the off chance that they may make something else from it. As the work was completed during Chip’s day job and not through his own freelancing, he was unable to call in any legal action when this happened.

fantastic series of lectures and has definitely made me search for other lectures that he has given in the past as I would imagine that they would be just as great as this one.

THE NEED FOR A BLOG

From the very start of the creation of That Design, I knew that the blog would be a massively important feature to the site. During the previous semester over the design analysis unit, I rated websites in relation to how well they fit within my particular success criteria. One of the recurring factors within successful design studio websites was the inclusion of a well updated blog alongside their fantastic portfolio of work. As mentioned previously with the posts from TYPOLondon, the blog has been extremely relevant with generating visitors to the site and due to the fact that the blog will update much more frequently than the portfolio, it will continue to bring in recurring visitors alongside the new ones. Hopefully, as people visit the blog they will then be lead to viewing each of our portfolios of work and in the very best situation they could commission us for a piece of work which will then cycle back into the blog as a new piece of work followed by an update to the portfolio section.

That Design had been online and functioning as a web site for a month or two successfully, however the site wasn’t fully finished. It was decided between us that we would have an official launch as a way of symbolically showing the completion of the site and to generate a little bit of hype for it among our Twitter followers. It also meant that we could work on our first collective brief, designing launch posters. November 11, 2011 was chosen as the launch day for it’s significant number digitally as 111111, which within binary often means ‘on’ or ‘yes’. The site was taken offline and I designed a holding page to show that the official launch was coming in the next couple of weeks. Having previously converted the site to PHP in October, I also wanted to have a slight redesign of the whole site. During the down-time of the launch, it was the perfect opportunity to spend time redesigning certain aspects to include some more of the latest web technologies such as CSS3 and HTML5 elements. By working with this new style, I would hopefully be appealing to other web designers and developers as it shows a more sophisticated site design using newer CSS3 styles such as placing animation on a page without the use of Adobe Flash. This is something that I am very conscious of as many smartphones and tablets including the iPhone, iPad and many Android devices do not support Flash for it’s lack of touch interactivity and the large amount of processing power needed which results in a loss of a significant amount of battery power.

Included with the launch page is the ability to subscribe to That Design to be notified of future updates. I plan to create some HTML email newsletters that can be sent out at various times throughout the year. These could include updates to our portfolios, recent/popular blog posts and seasonal messages to send to our visitors. I think that having an added method of drawing repeat visitors to the site using methods other than Twitter will benefit greatly. I am also aware, from my own personal experiences that people would not want to be bombarded with multiple amounts of emails, so I would keep it to a limited service only a few times a year. So far there are only 11 subscribers but that is only a starting point which can only grow to a larger number. The launch page can still be viewed at the link below.

Launch Posters Our first brief collectively, would be to each design a launch poster to be displayed a few days before as a way of announcing that something was coming and also to present our own personal style of design towards the same brief. Above are the first sketches that I produced before heading to illustrator to produce something digital. I was initially working with the repeating idea of the 1s in 11.11.11 and fitting that into my own personal style. Such as displaying it as 11 to the power of 3, 113. On the next spread, you will see some of the digital developments that I made using Illustrator mainly for the concept, Photoshop for the styling and InDesign for the typography layout.

My final poster design, shown right symbolises that the site is almost complete and that we’re almost ready to open up fully. I chose to visualise the message through the use of imagery that displays an old sliding puzzle game. The image on the puzzle is the ‘TD’ avatar that is used for the Twitter account and sometimes used as a logo when space is tight. When the site was complete and launched fully, I replaced the jumbled puzzle image with a completed puzzle on the home page. As mentioned previously, whilst the site was offline, I took the time to redesign the style of the site slightly. These screenshots show the newly updated style for all of the main pages. I think it definitely stands out more and feels a lot more contained than the original design which was very basic with a completely white background. This first screenshot is the updated home page with the new ‘hero image’ which is a link to the launch posters gallery. The image is animated with CSS3 to scroll through all four of our designs. The second screenshot shows the contributors page which has details about us individually such as a quick piece of background information as well as our interests and specialities within design. I would like to update this section in the future

to have profile photos of each of us and I also think it would be great to have some well-shot videos that display us as designers in our personal environments of design. Below each picture there is a contact icon that allows for a visitor to download a .vCard with our contact information to add to their address book. This has been added to create another method of gaining return visitors who may look through their address book at a later date and may wish to commission us for a piece of design work if they require. PROMO: TWITTER

To promote the site and generate visitors I have been mainly using Twitter and word of mouth. I created a Twitter account for That Design which we could all log into and post anything that we felt was relevant to graphic design such as new work or events happening in and around London as well as responding to design news that has occurred anywhere in the world. The account is also used to notify our followers of new blog posts that we have written. This is all done automatically from some WordPress plugins that I have included on the blogs. At the moment, we have 164 followers but I plan to increase that over time as we write more frequent content to the blog and talk about it more when networking with other designers. I would like to get to 1000 followers by the end of 2012. I also plan to make some regular designs such as monthly posters that would become a regular feature on the site so that people could return to see something new. Blogging about particular events that I have attended such as TYPOLondon and the Typographic Circle has been successful in generating a large number of visitors and pageviews to the blog and also the rest of the site for a few days following the post being written. My collection of posts on TYPOLondon

were picked up by TYPOLondon themselves and sent around through their Twitter as well as being blogged about by fontblog.de and a couple of the speakers: Dan Rhatigan and Nadine Chahine have also tweeted links to the posts and even commented on them. My 10 posts about the talks created over a thousand pageviews to the site in the space of about 3 days which definitely made me realise that I needed to be blogging about events a lot more in order to generate repeat visitors.

Quite often I will spend time searching for new designers to follow as a way of discovery as well as letting those designers know that we exist. By sticking to mainly creative people to follow, it will enable the Twitter algorithms to rate us higher within the ‘Who to Follow in Design’ section of the site as it will recognise us for following designers and tweeting about designers, rather than just randomising it. Overall, I couldn’t rate Twitter high enough, as it has proven to be a key factor into the success of the site so far. It will always be at the forefront of promotion for everything related to That Design.

PROMO: BEHANCE

Behance is a very popular social network aimed at designers, artists and other creative industries. A profile was created for That Design in order to continue our growth of exposure and to create more links to the site that are both relevant and successful. A great benefit with Behance over other creative networks is that projects can be displayed completely publicly and various other people whether they are contributors or clients can be acknowledged along with it. For example, a project posted on the profile of That Design can link directly to each of our own individual Behance portfolios thereby continuing the process of giving each other exposure through the strength of our own work. For the current moment, not a lot of focus has been made in developing a number of contacts through Behance in comparison to Twitter, but it is definitely an area to work within. When we update the portfolio of work on thatdesign.co.uk I will also update the Behance portfolio to stay inline with the main site.

PROMO: GOOGLE+

Google+ is a fairly new social network, released earlier in 2011 and has only recently allowed the creation of business pages. A lot of people compare it to Facebook and it has been slated to emerge as one of the largest social networks and a serious competitor to Facebook for commercial business profiles. Google, already the king of online search has a head start with creating a social network as it can link the two directly together which is a major benefit to us at the end of the line. Google+ uses a feature of +1’s which is when a user shares a website as being good or worth looking at. The more people that rate That Design on Google+, then the higher it will appear in search results on the web. It handily shows avatars within search results when the logged in user sees a link that one of their Google+ friends has already shared. This can be great for generating extra links because it is a digital word-of-mouth without effort on our part. It will also show avatars when That Design has posted a link which can work favourably with creating a network with other existing designers and companies. As Google+ is a very new social network it hasn’t necessarily grasped people straight away, but I do have faith in the development of the Google team that it will grow to be something as big as Facebook. Because of this reason, I feel that I should get to use it fully now, than wait as there’s absolutely nothing to lose.

STATS

I have been using Google Analytics to collect all sorts of statistics about visitors to That Design since I converted the site to using PHP in the middle of October. It works by placing a file on the server that communicates with Google and then linking every single page that you would like to track to that unique file. I have set it up for every page on the site and it records an incredible amount of data from what links are clicked to how long someone stays on a particular page. I have totalled up some of the most impressive statistics and also some that I feel are quite interesting and then converted them visually into graphics on the following page. As mentioned previously, it only records data from the middle of October, when I placed the code online to a chosen date of December 15. The statistics that are shown are relevant for the whole site including the blog and subsequent posts. In terms of daily pageviews, there is a clear peak during the time the TYPOLondon posts were published. These high numbers really surprised me as I honestly didn’t expect that many people to come across the site to read what I had written, yet through the power of social media, the visitors came to see. It really emphasizes the importance of the blog within the site and encourages me to write more content on a more regular basis to return to having those high numbers consistently.

When I first started That Design, I wasn’t really sure how successful it would be. I didn’t know if anyone would want to join me in creating a collective and I wasn’t sure if I would ever find the time to dedicate myself to making the website fully. Yet, somehow I managed to get something going and from there it has all snowballed into something I am truly passionate about. Looking back now I remember having a distant vision of being able to collectively organise our work together and I had a vague idea of how the blogs may work but when I compare that to how I feel now, I know I am definitely in a much better position to look forward and plan new features and designs. The way it has all developed in the past month has made me realise that it could actually turn into something quite big. I’ve always thought of the website as a little side project to test out my web development, but now I look at it as my main focus with the way that I present myself to the industry as a graphic designer and as my main learning environment for web development.

“I am able to talk confidently about what That Design is when in conversation with designers from the industry” In terms of gaining exposure into the industry, That Design is probably my biggest piece of work to go into my portfolio as it is an actual item rather than a conceptual piece of work. I have made it the home of all my design work online as I promote thatdesign.co.uk as being my portfolio and blog rather than my own personal domain of joeallam.co.uk because it has a more professional approach to it. I find that I am able to talk confidently about what That Design is when in conversation with designers from the industry and it helps demonstrate my skills and motivation as a designer within creating objectives and goals. I think working behind a name like That Design rather than my own personal name as a freelancer is a much better practice for the sole reason that it has the word ‘design’ included. If I was to try and push myself as a designer as Joe Allam then it would be extremely hard for people to remember or to even recognise that I am a graphic designer. In comparison, when presented with the name That Design, people will know straight away that it is design related and have a better chance of being able to remember it in the future. Due to the large amount of work we have all been doing towards University briefs and submissions, work for That Design has been rather slim in recent weeks, which has reflected in the blog posts and subsequently within the overall statistics for the site. For this reason, I have decided to focus my attention to That Design at a much greater level in the new year with plans to create a monthly poster release, newsletters to subscribers, more connectivity socially within the site as well as printed media such as business cards and a portfolio booklet. 2012 is the year of That Design.



OFFSET From the success of TYPOLondon in terms of the number of visitors it attracted to That Design, it has made me want to attend more design conferences in the future. Russell introduced me to OFFSET, a creative series of lectures over a few days held annually in Dublin. All four of us have since decided that we will be attending the 2012 festival in March for our own benefit as well as to promote That Design and network with a collection of designers from the industry.

I will use the same process of blogging that I did for TYPOLondon to hopefully achieve the same amount of traffic to the site as well as a way of continuing my practice of writing about design. Next year’s OFFSET festival will be held between the 9th and 11th of March and will host well over 25 creative professionals from the design industry across two different venues. I have attended the past two Typographic Circle events, the TDC exhibition and Rian Hughes as well as the talk in March from Simon Esterson. All three of them have been a great way of learning from designer’s experiences first hand on top of being a major amount of inspiration in just a couple of hours. The TDC exhibition was posted onto the blog of That Design and generated 102 views during the day and 130 the following two days. I have also been able to network with some designers and typographers in the lobby area before and after some of the talks which has enabled me to talk about myself and my own practices as well as hearing about their experiences and advice on a personal level.

The first competition brief that I have chosen to work on is the Royal Mail postage stamps brief from the RSA. I chose to work with Brief B: World with a Future as I felt that I connected better with it because I am not a person who sends many letters which is the sort of person that Brief A is targeted towards. I am also very enthusiastic towards geography and the environment as a topic which Brief B is targeted towards. Before working with anything visual for this brief, I made some notes on the key aspects of what the brief was asking for. The main aspect that I deducted from the brief was that the stamps need to change the mindset of the consumer into thinking towards the future of the earth as a contributor rather than a spectator. This means that the stamps need to be directed to the mass market of the United Kingdom that would make people reflect upon their own input towards preserving the environment for future generations as well as representing the UK for our efforts. Very early on I decided that I wanted to work with something that was quite statistical in terms of displaying numbers. I downloaded the Digest of United Kingdom Energy Statistics (DUKES) 2011 document from the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and had a read through some of research that has been made for the past year in comparison to the DUKES 2010 and 2009. The document is a full 268 page text file so I had to digest the information into a specific area to work within. I selected page 29, which has details about the import and export of energy within the UK. The data is broken down into industrial and consumer use within different sectors such as transport and gas heating for example. I made notes of some specific details that I thought were relevant to the work I would be making within my stamp designs.

Initial Designs I made some sketches on the first ideas that came to my head with designing some stamps that would make people aware of some environmental impacts that they take part in. At the start, I felt my strongest idea was the ‘7 billion and you’ which is aimed at making awareness about how the global population has recently passed 7 billion people. I wanted to make people realise that although there are 7 billion people in the world, we ALL need to do our bit to improve and preserve the environment. The other sketches had ideas such as a very small stamp to reduce the amount of material needed to make it, therefore cutting down on supplies to the very basics needed. I took some of these ideas into Illustrator to create digital mock-ups to experiment with layouts and positioning of certain elements such as the typography.

Continued Development I continued to work with the idea of ‘You and Seven Billion Others’ as I felt that I still hadn’t explored all areas of it. I created a dot matrix style of world map to use within the background of each stamp and then adjusted the scale to work as either a whole globe or to just focus in on the UK. You can see all of my digital development on the page to the right. I didn’t feel as though this idea was working 100% but I carried on to see how far I could push it and on the off-chance that I may fall into another idea. I also worked with representing the fact: ‘90% of the UKs imported energy is a fossil fuel’ taken from the DUKES document. The idea would be to have 5 key facts represented under the umbrella of ‘You and Seven Billion Others’.

Development and Setbacks Having spent so much time researching and organising the statistics within the spreadsheet, I felt as though I could go some distance with this idea of displaying how many carbon fuels had been burnt for each continent. However, after designing a few mock-ups for the European statistics, I started to think that this idea wasn’t personal enough. It didn’t reach out to the individual and wasn’t very specific. There was just a number for ALL of the emissions. It didn’t specify how much came from transport for example which would allow people to put it into a better perspective for what they contribute to.

GETTING MY HANDS DIRTY



HOME STUDIO

I felt that in order to succeed with this brief, I would need to get my hands dirty and start to manipulate some items and work with some photography to get some strong imagery happening. I set up a small white backdrop with some paper and using my camera with external flash in a fixed position on my tripod, I started to work with one of my earlier sketched ideas.

“I’ve always been the sort of person to shy away from stock image sites” Using a glass of liquid, I got some close-up photography of the bubbles and disturbances that I made in order to simulate oil or gasoline that people put into their vehicles. Initially I used lemonade and then eventually turned to vegetable oil stirred with a fork to generate the results I was looking for. The idea in mind was to create a stamp that would appear to be full of liquid. It would then display a message with some statistical information about some fossil fuels that we burn. I created a reflector using just a piece of cardboard wrapped in some kitchen foil to help bounce the light through the bubbles. I’ve always been the sort of person to shy away from stock image sites in light of creating my own imagery. I prefer to have creative control over every aspect of the design process as I believe that you will end up with better results. The most successful photos from the shoot are displayed across the next double page spread.

ON THE RIGHT TRACK

I thought the photo shoot was a great success and has given me the direction that I needed as I was drifting all over the place with both the concept and the methods I was using to communicate it. The idea of placing statistical information on the stamps developed into them being representative of health warnings. This could then be a continuous theme throughout all six stamps and they could each display a statistic or be representative of a statistic that is outlined somewhere else within the outer packaging. However, although I believe this to be the start of something successful, due to the massive amount of time I have spent on this brief and the need to begin other competition briefs, I have left the stamp collection unfinished for the time being. I feel as though I am at a place where I can continue in the new year and finish this book of stamps to enter the competition. I plan to create some more imagery in the style of the first oil based stamp for elements such as coal and gas as well as the effects these elements have on our environment through pollution.


ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST


The second competition brief that I have decided to work with is the Penguin book cover design for the classic novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey. I had heard of the book but I am not an avid reader so I knew that I had not read it, but I have seen the film directed by Milos Forman starring Jack Nicholson from 1975. I saw the film for a second time to refresh my mind of the narrative and to get inspired towards a possible book cover design. I did a few searches online to understand some differences between the book and the movie representation and the main difference between the two is that within the book, the story of Randle McMurphy and the mental institute is told from the eyes of the Chief, a patient who spends his time pretending to be a deaf mute. Within the film, the Chief does not play as significant a part in the way the story unfolds. I have never designed for a book cover before which is mainly why I have chosen to work on this brief as I feel it would fill a gap within my portfolio when I position myself as a designer.



Notation With the film fresh in my mind, I made some notes on some key elements to the narrative and also some observations to particular elements of the mental institute that could be represented within my cover design. A few of the things I have noted down would need to be checked against the book to make sure that they weren’t dramatised for the film as Penguin are not looking for any connection to the film at all. I always write down some initial mental ideas before starting anything visual; no natter how much I write down it always places me in a better position to work on a design.



Development with Sketches I mad some initial sketches with some ideas that I had developed as a way of just getting them down on paper before they slipped my mind. A few of them are quite literal to the name ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ but I felt that there needed to be some sort of connection to the fact that the book is about a mental institute and in particular a prison at the same time. At this current stage, I wasn’t sure how some of my ideas would be represented. Whether they would be photographs or if they would be vector illustrations. If they were to be photographs then I would need to make sure that I was actually able to make some of these ideas, such as finding a hospital bed to photograph. I could also think about photo manipulations within some of the ideas. If they were to be vector illustrations, would I be able to style them in a way that they would look realistic and well proportioned or would they have to be simplified to an iconic version? One of the ideas that I immediately thought could have the potential to be successful was the circular maze that symbolically represents the mind and mental strain. I thought back to the mental institute where they would receive their pills within small paper cups and linked the maze to the pill pot. This would also be visually similar to a birds nest with eggs in the middle. I took this idea further and decided to represent the maze with barbed wire as a visual link to the prison factor of the mental institute. I also thought about whether the maze would actually have a solution, or if it would lead to nothing and be incomplete as a way of placing strain and confusion on the mind which plays a big part in the plot.



Digital Development I created a digital version of my maze concept within Illustrator as a way of leading towards some book cover designs, however I still wasn’t sure how I would be representing it for the finished version. To the left is the first maze layout which as you can see doesn’t lead into the centre, then I created a barbed wire version above and also with some pills in the centre.

Mock-up Covers To visualise how my concept would look as a cover I made a few digital mock-ups. I’m liking the way that the image draws into the centre and allows for the typography to sit at the top and bottom of the page, but I do feel that it isn’t giving a great impact and the production of it doesn’t look to be the same standard of some of my other work or even actual book covers that exist. I plan to make this same concept with actual barbed wire and use photography to produce the same idea rather than a vectorised version as I feel it will give a much greater impact on the viewer.

Much the same with the stamps brief, I will be leaving this competition for completion in the new year as the timescale has become quite tight inline with other University commitments however I feel that I have a strong plan for a way of making this concept successful as a book cover.


BRS.TL LOGO

Dale Anthony, a friend of mine from Bristol is a web developer who has been working on a personal project for the past couple of years. It was originally called Wired Bristol but has since changed the name to brs.tl to avoid confusion with the magazine, Wired.

It is an online magazine all about Bristol with the aim to publish articles and information about events and locations in and around Bristol. There currently isn’t a well regarded site of this nature for the city as there are in other large cities around the UK. The website launched back in 2009 but it was soon taken offline as Dale didn’t think that the whole project was actually complete and didn’t have enough features available for viewers. Over the past year, he has been working in his spare time to recreate the whole project and I have been able to see it develop over time. When I began to gain an interest in web development, Dale was able to help out on a number of occasions when it came to providing links and just general guidance. I based a deal with him that I would do any design work that he required and in return he would help me out with any coding needs that I had.

This was a benefit to both of us as it would be additional work for my own portfolio and I would also be able to get Dale to work on some aspects of future web projects that I would be working; alongside that, Dale would get some free design work to help his currently nonprofit organisation set-up.

“I knew that the S.S. Great Britain and the Clifton Suspension Bridge were the two most iconic landmarks for the city” Over a short period of time, I worked with Dale to design a logo for the site. The only requirements were that it had to be circular or rounded and iconic with Bristol landmarks. It also had to be able to work at quite a small scale because it would mainly be used on the website within a tight space to make it accessible to all screen resolutions. Growing up in the area, I knew that the S.S. Great Britain and the Clifton Suspension Bridge were the two most iconic landmarks for the city and Dale himself had asked for them to be considered quite heavily within the logo design, so they were my starting points to my initial sketches. I have included some of my original sketches for the brief that are then followed by the digital development across the following pages. It was about 3 quarters of the way through the time that I was working on the logo when the name was changed from Wired Bristol to BRS.TL which is also the new web address.

This is a progressive view of the digital development for the logo. I started to add colours and shading to the overall effect as I thought that Dale was after that particular look but then on review he preferred to have logo as a single colour. Once I had tried multiple different layouts and colour schemes we both agreed that the almost-black style was perfect for the general look of the logo.


This is how the chosen final logo looks in plain vector format. The typography was removed as it has not yet been decided how the typography will look like on the finished site. To the right is a development screenshot of the website and how the logo will look in place across each of the pages. I have also suggested that the logo could be printed as beer mats as a great way of promoting the site in one of the environments that it aims to cover extensively. If the site is successful, which I’m sure it will be then I hope to work with Dale on more design work to help shape an identity that it’s users will recognise across Bristol.




I joined Twitter on April 26 2008 and since then I have been using it daily for both personal connections as well as design related needs such as following designers and also tweeting a lot about design. Currently, I have 343 followers and have recently passed 4,000 tweets. My following list has grown to 404 and continues to grow, especially within the design industry. I have found Twitter to be an amazing tool for both staying up to date with multiple industries as well as letting others stay up to date with my own design and photography practice. Through using statistical tools over the past few years, most notably Google Analytics, I have been able to see how many people are clicking links through to my work and Twitter is always the top referrer. Just like with the account for That Design, I also tweet about the latest blog posts as I have many more followers than That Design so there is a higher chance that people will find the link and follow through to the website.

“I can usually post a question and someone will be able to answer it for me” A lot of the people/companies that I follow are related to the design industry which is great as I am able to see design news and trends as soon as they happen via a live stream of tweets. I’ve also found it extremely useful when learning elements of web development as quite a few of my followers are developers which means that I can usually post a question and someone will be able to answer it for me. I’m often using Twitter on my iPhone which means that I am always up to date with the latest design news throughout the whole day. It also allows me to post photos of design that I find interesting or inspiring whilst I’m out and about with the built in camera.

SELF PROMO: DRIBBBLE

Dribbble is an extremely new portfolio network – still requiring an invite to join – that has some unique limitations and feature choices that make it very appealing to designers. The main concept behind Dribbble is related to basketball, each user is known as a player, who get drafted by other players through an invitation system, each post is known as a shot which other players can rebound with their own shot.

“Dribbble is extremely useful in gaining exposure to my work” Each shot is limited to 400 x 300 pixels in dimension, meaning that it is designed for people to show a short snippet of their current work in progress or a small section of a completed piece of work. I find this small scale restriction to be one of it’s most successful features, much like the character limitation on Twitter, it means that each piece of work will be much more considered than say a photo on Flickr which can be any size or dimension. Because each player has to be drafted in order to join Dribbble, it means that the administrators can trace back each invitation and have the right to remove players if the people they have invited abuse the system or post items that aren’t related to design. Overall it creates a network of some extremely inspirational design work and because it is still a small network with under 10,000 users, there is a very high chance that your work may be featured in the ‘explore’ section and you could gain quite a lot of exposure. I have been using Dribbble for the past month and have posted 6 shots, 4 of which are related and linked to That Design and have gained 470 views and 35 likes collectively on Dribbble which has converted into 415 pageviews on That Design over the space of two consecutive days. This have proved

to me that Dribbble is extremely useful in gaining exposure to my work and also shows that the type of users are very willing to click external links to view other pieces of work. Much like Google+, I am still testing out different methods of how I can incorporate it into my self-promotional plans but things look very promising with statistics such as the above.

“There are more users related to web design than any other industry on the site” Dribbble has also been a key place for me to find inspiration on particular projects, especially within web design. There are more users related to web design than any other industry on the site which means that there is always a great amount of quality work to look through. A useful feature of Dribbble is the jobs section. Users and companies are able to pay a small fee to have Dribbble advertise a job placement in a particular field of design for all users to see. Because of the small user numbers, this makes Dribbble an excellent place to look for jobs as it is nowhere near as competitive or open as other websites. Although as previously said, the majority of users have extremely strong portfolios which may contradict this theory. There is also the ability for users to place ‘available for hire’ links on their profiles on the chance that passing users will be able to hire them for selected design work.

SELF PROMO: BEHANCE Alongside That Design, I also have my own personal Behance portfolio. For the same reasons as why I have an account for That Design, I apply the same methods to my own personal account. I often use Behance as a way of gaining inspiration and also for helping me get passed a mental block of difficulty within some of my design work as I know that I will always find some quality work on the network. It’s nowhere near as popular as Twitter, but it is certainly a much larger network than Dribbble. They have a system of appreciations that allows every user to ‘appreciate’ a project at the click of a button. They have only just updated the site to allow users to see who has appreciated their work as it used to be an anonymous system which will benefit me as I post more work because it will allow me to interact directly with other designers who appreciate the work that I am producing. This could potentially lead to a collaboration or even further to a work placement or job listing. Behance is currently the only way of displaying a portfolio of work on a LinkedIn account through the use of a widget on your profile page. This adds another benefit as it allows me to display my work on all of my social platforms. Like Dribbble, Behance also has a section related to jobs and allows users to list themselves as available for hire. This is extremely useful as it will allow visitors to look through a portfolio of work and then immediately decide if they are the type of designer that they are looking for, unlike other business tools which are simply agency websites with a CV uploaded. Due to the higher number of users than Dribbble, it means that there are usually more jobs listed, however that also translates into more people being able to see those job listings.

SELF PROMO: LINKEDIN LinkedIn is the most well known website for professionals to upload their CVs and stay up to date with their connections through social media. However, although I have an account with around 100 connections, I don’t feel as though I am really connecting with anyone on the site. It appears to be a standardised place for people to upload their work experience in a format that everyone will be used to, but the format of just having connections doesn’t appear to be doing anything but just looking like a large number on my profile for people to compare to their own large number.

I suspect that I am just too inexperienced within the industry to really see the benefits of how LinkedIn will help me stay connected with the people I have worked with or potentially could work with. I do feel that I needed to have an account as there currently isn’t any other standard choice for working professionals and appears to be the go-to place for people to sign up, but whether it actually benefits me is another question. I just know that I definitely won’t benefit from not having an account.

SELF PROMO: ZERPLY Zerply is another new network that I have signed up to, with similar features to LinkedIn although it is enclosed in a much nicer and friendlier user interface.

It is a network that allows people to upload their work experience and CVs and even import all of their LinkedIn user data and keep them synchronised. I much prefer using it to display my recent employment online than LinkedIn as it aesthetically looks a lot nicer. It has links to all of my other online networks for people to connect with such as Twitter, Dribbble, Behance, LinkedIn etc. Zerply is still in a development process, but true to my nature of always wanting to find and join new and upcoming services, I have fully set myself up with an account and public profile. It has a useful feature of recommending particular users related to the same field of interest as you. From this, I have found many other web and graphic designers that I have then traced to their other social networks and connected with them as well as bookmarked their portfolios for later viewing.

NET WORK ING

Networking with existing designers in the industry is not always an easy task. Whenever I get the chance to talk with someone from the industry I always try to find out how they feel about the journey they have taken. Whether they would have changed particular aspects and if there are still goals that they wish to achieve. When talking about my own practice I have developed a way of talking passionately about That Design before leading more personally into my own portfolio of work. I often have my iPad with me which is a great way of quickly demonstrating how something looks as well as connecting imagery to my explanations. It also allows the people that I connect with to show me some of their own personal work and portfolio if they don’t currently have anything with them. It’s become a really useful tool to have with me at all events that I attend. I made a diagram to visualise all of the networking events and connections I had made throughout the last semester as a method of seeing how I may be connected on various levels to the same contact or event.

“I plan to make a much larger effort to reach out directly with existing designers as a way of gaining feedback on my work” I have divided it into four sections stemming directly outwards from myself; social networks, events, competition briefs and That Design. Each section then expands into a more direct category until it leads to individual results. I have then connected all of the individual results to each other and then I can see from a glance what the most popular methods are and where there can be room for improvement. By far the most popular engagement comes from Twitter. Although I have almost all of these connections running through Twitter, I know that I do not necessarily contact them directly. I mostly just follow their updates and see what they’re up to. In the future, I plan to make a much larger effort to reach out directly with existing designers as a way of gaining feedback on my work and also as a way of building up a relationship to them individually. This method of visualising who I have connected with has been extremely informative to the way in which I am networking and I will implement it on a frequent basis to see how better connected I become. It is also interesting to see how well other designers are connecting and comparing it to their successes. I don’t want to be connected on every network available, but I do feel that I need to be connected on the most relevant networks to Graphic Designers



I follow quite a varied range of companies and designers within the industry through a constantly updated bookmarks folder but mainly through Twitter with a list that I have created which contains tweets from followers that I have selected based purely on the fact that they are a creative individual or company and share a lot of information and external links. As I will continue to mention, Twitter has been a fantastic tool as a designer to stay in touch with the design industry as my stream is flooded with content everyday, keeping my inspired and up-to-date. A lot of the designers I follow are individuals working either as freelance designers or designing in their spare time from their regular day jobs. This is useful to see how they tend to work and their characteristics as a designer as well as links to the items they have been working on from a personal perspective and not in a corporate manner. However, in terms of finding companies to apply for this is not very useful as the majority of these creatives are just one person individuals.

“I’d like to be amongst all sorts of design disciplines” From my list of bookmarks, there are many more design studios that I stay up to date with and am familiar with their portfolios such as ilovedust, Turner Duckworth, A+B Studio, Jelly, 2XELLIOTT and The Partners to name a few. The target area that I would be looking to work within having graduated from University is a multiple disciplinary studio. I don’t want to categorise myself as only being a web designer or an art worker for example, I’d like to be amongst all sorts of design disciplines as I feel that I have many areas of talent within design. There are many companies within this list that I would love to work for, but as we all know it’s not as easy as just selecting one and asking for a job. I know that I will need to contact each company directly with a personalised portfolio and CV after researching them as a design firm. For the past few months I have been unsure as to where I could apply for internships and jobs as well as being highly focused on my own independent learning and development, in particular within the web. I don’t fully believe that getting a job can be planned so far in advance as I know that I definitely will not be available to work until at least June 2012 due to my dedication towards my work at University and so will take these next few months as I lead up to graduation as my time to really focus on applying for positions. It’s a scary thought, but I will have to take it as it comes and treat every opportunity as my only opportunity.

INDUSTRY FOLLOW ING



2X ELLIOTT

From attending exhibitions in the same building that has one of the 2XELLIOTT studios, I have been able to speak with James Horwitz who is Creative/Company Director at 2XELLIOTT, on a number of occasions in an informal environment about design work and his story of setting up his own company which is now based across two locations in London. We’ve built a friendly relationship and I feel as though I am able to contact him for advice and feedback within my work. 2XELLIOTT’s work is predominantly within branding and web design with a strong ethos towards experimentation, especially when the media is print related. The style of design is very clean and minimalist which is a very similar commitment within my own work. They offer internships throughout the year, with the next available slot being at the beginning of the summer period. James has mentioned to contact him when I’m ready to start applying for areas of design and he’d be able to help point me in the right direction which should be extremely helpful.



FUTURE PLANS

I have created a timeline plan of action for financial stability that will cover the next year and a half. I am determined to stay in London once I have graduated from University. I really don’t want to have to leave this location and head back home in the west country based on the fact that I can’t afford to live here because I am unemployed. For the current moment, I am focusing heavily on my University work, including my final major project for next semester but I plan to start contacting and applying for jobs over the next few months in advance of leaving University in June.

I would like to continue That Design as an online presence and as previously mentioned I would love for it to turn into a physical working space, but thinking realistically; I would not be in a financial position to even come close to this scenario so I know that I will need to have a steady income from some employment.

“I have allowed myself up until September to try and find a job within the design industry” I am always looking for individual freelance work to help improve my portfolio and gain some extra income along the way, but as I have learnt from experience, this is in no way a steady income. I have allowed myself up until September (around 3 months) to try and find a job within the design industry, but if I am unsuccessful, I will resort to a retail backup plan as I know that I am able to return to my old job at Apple once I have graduated at any time. I really don’t want to have to take this option, but I have it in my mind if things don’t work out right for me. I will continue to search for a job within the design industry if I return to retail and due to my determined personality, I will find a job somewhere, I’m just not sure where and when.


SEMESTER EVALUATION


Through the skills that I have learnt independently over the past few months, I feel I have been able to put myself into a good position for my future career as a graphic designer. I think it shows a lot about my commitment to graphic design and in particular my continued individual focus and curiosity that leads me to want to learn more about everything that I am involved within. I’ve always been an extremely focused person with everything that I do and have always had a passion for technology and embracing the newer things in life. This has definitely been at the focal point for my progression as I am fascinated by the future and the way that we will communicate and publish our ideas over the next generation.

“I am confident in myself as a designer that I have the skills and the passion beyond the requirements for most working environments” As time draws nearer to graduation from University I am growing more confident with my success for when I enter the industry full-time. I can’t say that I have any sort of certainty within gaining a job or work placement, but I am confident in myself as a designer that I have the skills and the passion beyond the requirements for most working environments. I plan to continue to increase my knowledge of web development as I think it will become an added bonus to employers that I will have knowledge in this area of the industry. In order to improve in this area I will need to work on big projects for a few months at a time as I have done previously with That Design. I know through my own practices that I learn faster when there is a particular end goal or process that needs to be achieved. With regards to That Design, I am absolutely thrilled as to how it has turned out. I really wasn’t sure whether it would end up being something recognisable yet I now believe it to be one of the most recognisable aspects to my design portfolio. When I set my mind towards developing for That Design, everything seems to step up a notch to the point of it actually feeling like a professional company. As time goes on, I want to continue to make it the centre of my design lifestyle online. It’s completely altered my own perception of everything that I do, as I now realise that I can take on a large brief for myself and continue to set myself goals in a dedicated manner. I hope that it shows a lot of self-initiative within my career as a designer when networking with existing designers and agencies as I plan to make sure that it is a well featured part of my portfolio that will continue to develop. I can only hope that it will continue to grow into something very stable for all of us.

I plan to attend the OFFSET design festival with the others from That Design which I hope will be a real benefit to all of us inspirationally as well as with the promotion of That Design collectively. I hope that the blog posts that will follow can create as many pageviews and new visitors as the TYPOLondon posts did back in October. I am also really pleased with how I have been representing myself online through networks such as Twitter, Dribbble and Behance. I have been able to generate quite a few followers on each of the networks and get quite a bit of exposure to my work. So far, nothing much has come of it but I know that if I continue to have a presence online and stay up to date with each of the networks then I will eventually be able to get some work from it. I’m especially excited to see how networks like Dribbble and Google+ will benefit me as they are particularly new and in the instance of Dribbble, a closed network only open to invitation at the moment. As long as I am consistent with the message that I portray and if I stay frequent across all networks then it can only lead to positive outcomes. I used to promote my own personal domain of joeallam.co.uk as the centre of my design work but I have recently been able to locate myself as mainly dealing with thatdesign.co.uk as it gives a better impression to viewers as a designer. I will be looking to change my personal site into something that links all of my networks together with external links rather than hosting my portfolio there. I may also use it as more of a personal site than a professional location.

“It’s extremely daunting to not know how things will be in the future” This semester, I have been consistently looking forward to what is possible to achieve within the time-frame I have left at University. Everything seems to be left down to chance on who I may meet or what may come along, but I feel as though I have been able to prepare myself for all sorts of encounters that may happen. By travelling around always thinking about design, I have been able to stay focused when it comes to promoting myself as a designer as it is always at the forefront of my mind. I am very much looking forward to joining the design industry on a full-time basis, but I am also very nervous about the uncertainties that lie ahead. It’s extremely daunting to not know how things will be in the future and all I can do is to prepare for as many different types of outcomes as possible. I think that I will be able to leave University with the right mindset and determination to stay in London by any means necessary and I can only hope that my efforts will pay off into gaining a design related job that will place me on the ladder of employment for the start of my career.
